Hydroxyapatite(HAp) was synthesized using the waste sludge from semiconductor process and used as an anticorrosive pigment. The water absorption of coating pigmented with anticorrosive pigment and the corrosion at interface between coating and substrate were monitored using AC impedance techniques. The anticorrosive performance of HAp was compared with those of red lead(RL) and zinc potassium chromate(ZPC), which have been known as representative anticorrosive pigments. The amount of absorbed water in ZPC- and HAp- pigmented coatings was much higher compared to that in RL-pigmented and unpigmented film. However, it seems that the water absorbed into HAp- or ZPC-pigmented film is beneficial to anticorrosive function. The anticorrosive performance of HAp is superior or at least comparable to those of ZPC and RL. The excellent anticorrosive properties of HAp can be explained by its passivating ability, caused by the reaction of the soluble component of HAp with Fe to form iron phosphate in the presence of water.

Functional properties of mucilage and pigment extracted from Opuntia ficus-indica var. saboten were determined at various temperatures, pHs and alcohol concentrations. The crude mucilage extracted from pickly pear showed pH 4.2, 0.14% total acidity and 8.1% total soluble solid content(w/w, wet basis). Polysaccharide was purified from mucilage extract by isopropanol precipitation. Intrinsic viscosity of polysaccharide was 18.1dl/g and decreased with increasing KCl concentration. Relative viscosity and color stability of mucilage extract were determined with capillary viscometer and spectrophotometer at 534nm, respectively. In additions of 1~20%(v/v) ethanol, the red pigment of mucilage extract was very stable, but relative viscosity, increased gradually. For heating above 7$0^{\circ}C$, the stability of red pigment decreased drastically, but rheological property of mucilage was not changed. During storage, the red pigment was extremely unstable at above pH 8.3. At both pH 3.0 and pH 4.2, the red pigment was the most stable at 4$^{\circ}C$ for 18 days. In the case of storage at 37$^{\circ}C$, pigment of mucilage extract at pH 3.0 was destroyed more quickly than that at pH 4.2. Natural mucilage extract(pH 4.2) showed the good stability of red pigment at 3$0^{\circ}C$ for 10 days.
To produce yellow pigment selectively, mutants were induced from Monascus anka Nakazawa et Sato IFO 4478 (KCCM 11832 strain), and their characteristics were evaluated. Five kinds of auxotrophic mutants which required amino acids for growth and pigmentation, were isolated through a series of mutagenic treatments. Especially, asparagine auxotroph Y7 produced high ratio of yellow pigment. This mutant showed all the morphological characteristics of Monascuceae but the shape of colony and the diameter of conidia. Mutant Y7 was propagated by sexual reproduction more often than asexual reproduction, which could be effective in production of pigments. Yellow pigment produced extracellularly by the mutant Y7 was more soluble in polar solvents such as ethanol and water than in nonpolar solvents. Its productivity of yellow pigment was 2.2 times higher in the mutant Y7 than in parents. In addition, its yellow pigment showed characteristics of maximum absorption at 373 nm. Moreover, the hue of pigment produced by the mutant Y7 was bright yellow, and it was stable through the subculture over 10 generations.
A microorganism, YS-40 strain which powerfully produced penicillinase was isolated from soil. The morphological and cultural characteristics of the strain ; spore chain, spore surface, aerial mass color, melanoid pigment, reverse side pigment, other soluble pigment, and physiological properties were investigated. As the results of various examinations, the strain YS-40 was identified to be similar to Streptemyces bobili except the spore chain and the utilization of L-rhamnose among the various carbon sources.
Monolayer moisture contents of white ginseng and white ginseng powder were 6.68g/100g and 7.81g/100g respectively, and the corresponding water activity at that moisture were 0.16 and 0.18 respectively. TBA value increased with an increase in relative humidity and storage period, and the increase of TBA value was the lowest at 23-32% R.H.. The variation of fat soluble and water soluble pigment in white ginseng was similar to that of TBA value.
Recently, culture of Undaria pinnatifida, one of the representative esculent sea weed, has been prevailing in tile east and south coasta of Korea and reached the mass culture stage. In this study, compositional quality factors for food were studied and the contributory effects of blanching and pigment fixatives in the quality retention of cultured Undaria pinnatifida are discussed. When the place and time of harvesting were the same, cultured pinnatifida showed scarce difference in the chemical composition comparing to tile naturally grown Undaria pinnatifida, but cultured Undaria pinnatifida shelved a considerable difference depending upon the cultured places. In the chemical composition of Undaria pinnatifida, the alginic acid comprising about $40\%$ of the whole solid materials seemed to be responsible for the compositional puality. The chlorophyll and carotenoid content of the clutured Unaria pinnatifida were considerably lower than that of the naturally grown Undaria pinnatifida and wass inferior in puality by color to the naturally grown one. Dried Undaria pinnatifida contained a considerable amount of amino-N, mannitol, and soluble minerals and it is considered that these components play a great role in the relish effects. It could also be evaluated as a good albuminous source for food science the dried pinnatifida contains about $18\%$ of crude protein. In the analysis of free amino acid composition of dried Undaria pinnatifida, the naturally growm samples showed so what higher levels in all amino acid content than the cultured samples. The contents of theronine, alanine, and glutamic acid were major in quantity wherease histidine cysteine, tyrosine, and phenylalanine were minor. The contents of such amino acids like serine and proline were particularly low or undetectable. The results of amino acid analysis of the acid hydrolysates of dried Undaria pinnatifida in quantity of individual amino acid showed te same pattern as that of free amino acid. It is noticed that Undaria pinnatifida seemed to contain good quality protein since the contents of essential amino acids were considerably higher and uniform. By blanching the fresh sample, the water soluble components brought about cousiderable loss, and, particularly, it was noteworthy that both mannitol and soluble minerals apparently decreased. In the pigment analysis of the dried sample, blanching was effective to retain chlorophyll and carotenoid. The addition of pigment fixatives in blanching solution such as Ca-gluconate, Ca-carbonate, and Ca-hydroxide did not exhibit much effect on the pigment retention except that Ca-carbonate shelved some effect only in the early stage of storage.

In order to study the quarantine and sanitization methods for dried red pepper, comparative effects of commercial fumigation (methyl bromide/MeBr, phosphine gas/$PH_3$) and gamma irradiation (5, 10 kGy) were investigated in terms of soluble pigment capsanthin, and capsaicin content of pepper during storage at mom temperature for 8 months. In water-soluble pigment, the degree of browning was highest in the fumigated samples, particularly in pericarp part, as compared to the control and irradiated samples. In general, the changes in capsanthin content were not apparent by treatment groups, but some reduced content were found in 10 kGy-irradiated pericarp group, Eight months of storage resulted in the significant decrease in capsanthin contents of pericarp part by $26.76{\sim}38.08%$ depending on treatment groups. The contents of capsaicin and dihydrocapsaicin were not different between the control and 5 kGy groups, while their contents decreased in both fumigated and 10 kGy-irradiated groups(p<0.05). The reduction in pungent component was observed in all the sooted samples, which was mote apparent in teated groups than in the control.
The diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP) pigment is a bicyclic 8-π-electron system containing two lactam units. Typical DPP derivative pigments have melting points of over 350°C and very low solubility in most solvents, and show absorption in the visible region with a molar extinction coefficient of 33,000 dm2mol−1 and strong photoluminescence with maxima in the range 500–600 nm. X-ray structure analyses of DPP show that the whole molecule is almost in one plane. The phenyl rings are twisted out of the heterocyclic plane and the intermolecular hydrogen bonding between neighboring lactam NH and carbonyl units influences the structure of the DPP pigment in the solid state. In this study, mono-N-alkylation and mono-N-arylation were undertaken for Pigment Red 264 or Pigment Orange 73 with alkyl halide and aryl halide, respectively, in the presence of sodium tert-butoxide as a base catalyst to improve the solubility of DPP pigments and their application as CO2 indicators. The synthetic yield was in the range 11–88%. The indicator dyes are highly soluble in organic solvents and shows pH-dependent absorption (λmax 501 and 572 nm for the protonated and deprotonated forms, respectively) and emission (λmax 524 and 605 nm for the protonated and deprotonated forms, respectively) spectra. The mono-N-alkylated and mono-N-arylated DPP pigment was identified by 1H-NMR (1H-Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectrometer), FT-IR (Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy), and MS (Mass Spectrometry). According to the results of color and hue properties obtained by a color matching analyzer, the synthesized DPP pigment material can be used as a CO2 indicator.
Streptomyces bobili (YS-40) isolated from soil was tested that it had drug resistance against penicillin, cephalosporin series antibiotics and other antibiotics in the previous paper. The treatment of Streptomyces bobili, (YS-40) with ethidium bromide (EtBr), acriflavine and sodium dodecyl sulfate. (SDS) resulted in the elimination of R-plasmid from the host strain. Minimum growth inhibitory concentrations (MIC) of Hg, Ag, penicillin-G, ampicillin, chloramphenicol, oxytetracycline, streptomycin and kanamycin were found to be 15, 10, > 3, 000, > 100, > 1, 000, > 100, < 5 and < 5$\mu\textrm{g}$/$m\ell$ respectively. Among the curing agents, EtBr was proved to be the most powerful compound for the elimination of R-plasmid in the strain and the elimination rate with EtBr(10$\mu\textrm{g}$/$m\ell$) was about 98%. Optimal pH to. the elimination of R-plasmid was pH 7.0 and the R-plasmid in the cells incubated for 24 hrs was proved to be eliminated most effectively. Aerial mass color, soluble pigment formation and reverse side color were reported to be often the plasmid associated characteristics of the R-plasmid bearing bacteria. But these characteristics of the uncured and cured Streptomyces bobili, (YS-40) showed no changes in the most of the pigment formation media tested in this work.
In this study, acrylic water-soluble coatings were prepared by the white pigment($TiO_2$) and acrylic resin. The basic properties of acrylic water-soluble coatings were measured, and the maintenance of perfume(lemon) was investigated by FT-IR spectrophotometer and sensory test.
