두충(杜沖) 추출물의 암세포증식 저해효과 (Inhibitory Effects of the Stem Bark Extract of Eucommia ulmoides on the Proliferation of Human Tumor Cell Lines)

  • A bioassay-guided fractionation of the stem bark extract of Eucommia ulmoides Oliver (Eucommiaceae) led to the isolation of three iridoid constituents, genipin (1), geniposide (3), geniposidic acid (4) as well as $({\pm})-guaiacylglycerol$ (2) and fatty acid mixtures as active ingredients of the extract responsible for the antitumoral property. The EtOAc soluble part and BuOH soluble part of the extract demonstrated a potent inhibition on the proliferation of cultured human tumor cells such as A549 (non small cell lung), SK-OV-3 (ovary), SK-MEL-2 (melanoma), XF498 (central nerve system) and HCT-15 (colon) in vitro, whereas the remaining water soluble part exhibited a poor inhibition. The intensive investigation of the EtOAc soluble part and BuOH soluble part of the extract yielded genipin, guaiacylglycerol, geniposide, geniposidic acid and large amounts of fatty acid mixtures as active components.

  • This study examines the effects of different cooking methods (stir-frying, steaming, superheated-steaming) on the contents and the true retention of moisture, water-soluble vitamins, and bioactive compounds of ten selected vegetables: broccoli, brussels sprout, cabbage, eggplant, green bean, onion, red cabbage, red onion, squash, and tomato. The total color difference (𝚫E) values were decreased after stir-frying the samples, except for eggplant, green bean, and tomato. The true retention of water-soluble vitamins (B1, B2, B3, and C) was increased in most vegetables after superheated-steaming, as compared to steaming and stir-frying. Moreover, compared to the uncooked vegetables, a higher true retention of total polyphenol and flavonoid was obtained for most vegetables subsequent to superheated-steaming. Total anthocyanin content was detected only in eggplant, red cabbage, and red onion, and a smaller loss of anthocyanin was determined after subjecting red cabbage to superheated-steaming. Also, the free radical scavenging activities were higher in superheated-steaming vegetables, except in eggplant and squash. These results indicate that superheated-steaming induces a positive effect for retaining water-soluble vitamins and functional components of vegetables.

강수에 의한 대기 에어로졸 입자의 세정특성 (Characterization of Atmospheric Aerosols Scavenged by Rain Water)

  • In order to study the scavenging mechanism as a final goal, the characteristics of chemical components in the rain water were examined as a function of the amount of rainfall. The rain drops were collected sequentially with a rainfall interval amount of each 0.1 .sim. 0.5 mm from the beginning of rain. Rain water was separated into the soluble and insoluble components and the concentrations of 15 elements in both components were determined by the PIXE analysis. The elemental cencentrations decreased quickly till about 0.3 .sim. 0.5 mm of rainfall was obtained and then decreased gradually afterward. Fe, Ti, and Si in the aerosol particles caught in rain water were in high insoluble state. In contrast, almost whole of S and Cl were dissolved in rain water.

황사현상시 대기에어로졸 중 무기물질의 동태 (Behaviors of Inorganic Components in Atmospheric Aerosols on the Yellow Sand Phenomena)

  • The atmospheric aerosol samples during the Yellow Sand Phenomena in April 1993 were analyzed, and they were compared with those during the normal time. The conclusions are as follows: 1) TSP concentrations in the case of Yellow Sand Phenomena appeared to be 2.2times higher than those of normal conditions. 2) The concentration of aerosols; Inorganic components of soil-originated elements (Ca, Fe, Mn, Mg, K) during the Yellow Sand Phenomena were measured to be 1.9-2.1times higher than those during normal time. 3) During the Yellow Sand Phenomena the EF values of soil-originated metal contents except for elements Cd, Ni, Pb, Zn in the atmospheric aerosol were close to unity. 4) The concentrations of $Ca^{2+}, SO_4^{2-}, F^-$ in water soluble ionic components were higher than those during the normal time. 5) Washout factor by rain fall during the Yellow Sand Phenomena were estimated to 1268. 6) During the Yellow Sand Phenomina average deposition was 37.8ton/$km^2$.

  • Using rice husks pulverized by rotating knife cutter, the raw rice husk powder was solution treated by nitric and hydrochloric acids in order to separate phytolith from organic constituents. Because of the strong resistance of organic components of rice husk to acids, the raw powder had to be boiled in concentrated acids up to 300 min. By boiling in nitric acid for 60~120 min, all organic components were resolved while amorphous silica Powder of about 20 nm in size and of higher than 99.8% in purity was left behind. Inferior to the nitric acid, hydrochloric acid was not able to resolve organic component completely leaving unresolved matter of about 40% by weight even after 300 min of boiling. From the acid treatments and impurity analyses, it is considered that most of metallic elements in rice husks are combined to organic components that are easily soluble to acids.

  • 탈지가자(Terminalia chebula Retz)에서 추출, 분리된 페놀성 항산화 물질의 화학구조를 MS 및 H-NMR을 이용하여 분석하였다. 가자의 유리형 페놀산 추출물에는 ferulic acid, vanillic acid 및 p-coumaric acid, 용성 에스테르형 페놀산에는 caffeic acid, vanillic acid 및 p-coumaric acid, 불용성 페놀산에는 caffeic acid, phloroglucinol 및 pyrogallol이 주된 항산화성 물질로 확인되었다.

Experimental Studies on Wet Scavenging of Atmospheric Aerosols by Rain Drops

  • Wet scavenging by rain drops is a most important removal process of air pollutants. In order to study the scavenging mechanisms of aerosol particles, the characteristics of chemical components in the rain water were examined as a function of the amount of rainfall. Rain water were collected continuously and separated into the soluble and insoluble components. The elemental concentrations in both components were determined by a PIXE analysis. The physical and chemical characteristics of atmospheric aerosols during the rainfall events were measured simultaneously. The elemental concentrations in rain water decreased substantially just after rain started and then gradually declined in subsequential rain fall exceeding 1.0 mm. The large particles were scavenged more easily than the fine particles. Fe, Ti and Si in rain water were in high insoluble state. Contrarily, almost whole of S was dissolved in rain water.

  • As an initial step for evaluating hepatoprotective components against alcohol-induced toxicity, the effect of various fractions from Aloe vera on alcohol metabolism in rats were examined and the results were as follows: Water soluble fraction, after a single oral administration to rats, was found to cause a significant decrease in the serum ethanol concentration as well as enhancement of liver cytosolic ADH activity. On the other hand, the fractions soluble in organic solvent was found to cause an increase in the blood ethanol concentration and inhibit ADH activity. Further fractionation of the water soluble fraction by ultrafiltration system gave four subfractions corresponding to molecular weight and treatment of them in rats demonstrated that subfraction of M.W. > 30,000 exhibited the most potent enhancing activity of ethanol methabolism.

唐津과 安眠島地域 降水 成分의 變化特性에 關한 硏究 (A Study on the Transition Characteristics of Precipitation Components in Dangjin and Anmyon-do Area)

  • In this study, we are going to compare the chemical composition of the precipitation that falls in the Dangjin and Anmyon-do areas by analyzing the water soluble components (anion and cation). We also examined the effects of seasonal change and regional difference in those data sets. The [$NO_3\;^- \;+\;SO_4\;^{2-}$] at 49.2${\mu}$eq/l is 67% of the total anion of 73.1${\mu}$eq/l, while that of [$NH_4\;^+\;+\;Ca^{2+}$] at 37.7${\mu}$eq/l is 62% of the cation in Dangjin area. Also, the [$NO_3\;^-\;+\;SO_4\;^{2-}$] concentration of 151.8 (${\mu}$eq/l) is 62% for the total anion of 143.5 (${\mu}$eq/l), and the [$NH_4\;^+\;+\;Ca^{2+}$] concentration of 119.7 (${\mu}$eq/l) is 47% for the cation of 254.3 (${\mu}$eq/l) in Anmyon-do area. The ion composition ratio is shown for the order by 22% of $SO_4\;^{2-}$, 20.8% of $NH_4\;^+$ and 15.4% of $Cl^-$ that is the sum of 58.7% for the total ion composition in Dangjin area, and is the order by 33.8% of $NH_4\;^+$, 16.3% of $SO_4\;^{2-}$ and 11.1% of $Cl^-$ in Anmyon-do area. Furthermore, We predicted that even areas which were previously clean will get acid rain if there is large scale construction there or nearby.

한국산 비파의 부위별 영양성분 (Nutrition Components in Different Parts of Korean Loquat(Eriobotrya japonica Lindl.))

  • To furnish basic data about the utilization of Korean loquat as flood, this experiment was conducted. Nutritional components in leaves, fruit excluded seed, flesh and seed of Korean loquat were analyzed as follows : moisture 48.7%, 87.8%, 88.3% and 59.5% ; total sugar 1.57%, 7.21%, 7.36% and 2.41% ; crude protein 5.23%, 1.61%, 1.44% and 4.31% in each portion, respectively. The highest mineral contents of loquat leaves, fruit excluded seed, flesh and seed were Ca 2,458ppm, K 661ppm, 654ppm and 1,528ppm, and water soluble vitamins such as ascorbic acid, thiamin and pyridoxine were confirmed in different pares of Korean loquat, the contents of those were high thiamin 5.86mg% in leaves and ascorbic acid 1.l0mg%, 1.26mg% and 4.90mg% in fruit excluded seed flesh and seed, respectively. The contents of free sugars were high sucrose 0.87%, glucose 0.62%, 0.6475 and rhamnose 0.20%, and major organic acid were detected oxalic acid 1,693.70mg%, malic acid 201.70mg%, 207.60mg% and citric acid 55.70mg% in each portion, respectively. Free amino acid were identified 21, 14, 14 and 16 kinds of leaves, fruit excluded seed, flesh and seed, respectively and their contents in each portion were highest glutamic acid 280.22mg%, proline 35.l0mg%, glutamic acid 56.96mg% and sarcosine 230.24mg%, respectively. Volatile components were identified 25 and 11 kinds of leaves and flesh and their contents were highest d-nerolidol 28.70ppm, hexadecanoic acid 16.67ppm, respectively.
