  • Elevated concentrations of suspended solids in the marine enrironment caused by coastal developments have threatened to the marine ecosystem. Effects of suspended solids on the mortality and the modifications of glycogen levels of abalone, Haliotis discus hannai were studied. Abalone were exposed to suspended solids with concentrations of 0 (control), 1,000, 1,500 and 2,000 mg/ L for 96h. These suspended solids had no effect on the mortality of abalone. Significant decreases in the glycogen content of soft tissues were observed over 1,500 mg/ L concentration of suspended solids. These results suggested that abalone could tolerate a high level of suspended solids. However, it is necessary to observe further the long term effects of suspended solids on the physiological responses of abalone.

  • Quasi-living polymerization conditions for the copolymerization of ethylene and functionalized norbornenes can be achieved by using an initiator system comprising $[N-(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)-2-(2,6-diisopropylphenylimino)-propanamidato-{\kappa}^2N,O]Ni({\Box}^1-CH_2Ph)(PMe_3)\;and\;Ni(COD)_2$. It is possible with this polymerization system to obtain block-copolymer and tapered structures. The latter form microdomains similar to those of standard block co-polymers. The mechanism of the reaction will also be discussed.

  • The MLR(Multiple Linear Regression) models to estimate soluble solids content non-destructively were presented to make a selection of optimal photosensor utilized to measure the soluble solids content of apples. Visible and NIR absorbance in the 400 to 2498 nanometer(nm) wavelength region, soluble solids content(sugar content), hardness, and weight were measured for 400 apples(gala). Spectrophotometer with fiber optic probe was utilized for spectrum measurement and digital refractometer was used for soluble solids content. Correlation between absorbance spectrum and soluble solids content was analyzed to pick out the optimal wavelengths and to develop corresponding prediction model by means of MLR. For the coefficient of determination($R^2$) to be over 0.92, the MLR models out of the original absorbance were built based on 7 wavelengths of 992, 904, 1096, 1032, 880, 824, 1048nm, and the ones of the second derivative absorbance based on 5 wavelengths of 784, 1056, 992, 808, 872nm. The best model of the second derivative absorbance spectrum had $R^2$=0.91, bias= -0.02bx, SEP=0.28bx for unknown samples.

  • Recycling of industrial products as the stabilizers can be proper handling of industrial products and has positive side in terms of recycling of wastes. In this study, the final aims were to evaluate the usability as stabilizer of Bio-solids which was generated from contaminated soil with heavy metals after primary process and to compare the treatment efficiency with slag being currently applied in many existing sites. Soluble and exchangeable forms have closely related to pollution of groundwater and plant growth and they can be used to determine the effect of the stabilization efficiency. Slag and Bio-solids were tested to investigate the capacity of stabilizing arsenic. Slag treatment process 4 (PS-ball 5%) showed higher leachate concentration rather to 0.84% compared to treatment 1 (blank) based on an average of 0.63%. The other hand treatment 4 (Bio-solids 5%) showed the lowest soluble and exchangeable forms to 0.57% when Bio-solids was applied to stabilize arsenic. Thus, the leaching of arsenic will be more reduced if the Bio-solids are used as stabilizer in stead of slag which is being currently used in many fields.

  • The success of recirculating system depends largely on the treatment efficiency of waste generated in the system. fine solids were suspected to be responsible for fish kill in a recirculating system. Clogging of biofilter may be induced by high solids concentration in recirculating systems. Also, the solids could generate more ammonia nitrogen and oxygen demand if not removed out of recirculating system as soon as possible (Weeks et al., 1992). (omitted)

  • Laboratory experiments were carried out to investigate the performance of anaerobic sequencing batch reactor(ASBR) for digestion of a municipal sludge. Each cycle of the ASBR comprised feeding, two-or three-day reaction, one-day thickening, and withdrawal. The reactors were operated at an HRT of 10days and 5days with an equivalent organic loading rate of 0.8-1.54 gVS/l/d, 1.81-3.56 gVS/l/d at 35$\circ$C, respectively. Solids accumulation was remarkable in the ASBR during start-up period, and directly affected by settleable solids in the feed sludge. Floatation thickening occured in the ASBRs, and Solids profiles at the end of thickening step dramatically changed at solid-liquid interface. Slight difference in solids concentrations was observed within thickened sludge bed. Efficiencies through floatation thickening were comparable to that of additional thickening of the completely mixed control reactor. Average solids concentrations in the ASBRs were 2.2-2.6 times higher than that in the control throughout the total operation period. The dehydrogenase activity had a strong correlation with the solids concentration. Organics removals based on clarified effluent of the ASBRs were consistently above 86%. Remarkable increase in equivalent gas production of 27-52% was observed at the ASBRs compared with the control though the control and ASBRs showed similiar effluent quality. Thus, digestion of a municipal sludge was possible using the ASBR in spite of high concentration of solids in the sludge.

  • The solids(supplementary food) consumption of 200 healthy infants aged from 4 to 6 months have been measured. Five groups were assigned to different feeding patterns. Breastfed group(BF, n=38), formula-fed group(FF, n=102) and mixed-fed group(MF, n=14) were fed breast milk, formula and mixed(breast mile+formula) from birth until 6 months of age respectively. Convert 1 group(C1F, n=14) and convert 2 group(C2F, n=32) were fed breast milk and mixed milk at 2 months of age respectively and were switched to formula thereafter. All infants received solids form 4 months of age. The energy intake from solids at 4 and 6 months averaged 59.1 and 110.3㎉/d among BF groups vs 151.9 and 239.3㎉/d among FF groups respectively. Intakes of protein, calcium and iron were 38-46$\%$, 34-44% and 25-37$\%$ higher in the FF than in the Bf group during the first 6 months. However, no significant differences were found in the intakes of energy and nutrient intakes from solids in all 4 groups excluding BF group(39$\%$). Although BF infant's nutrient intakes from solids were lower than other group's intakes, they intaked evenly solids from various food groups. As the age of infant had increased, the energy intake ratio from solids was cereals and dairy products was increased whereas energy intake ratio from meats, eggs, fruits and vegetables was decreased. TSC4, TSC6(the frequency score for the kinds of weaning food taken) showed no significant difference among 5 feeding groups but CIF-and C2F group's scores tended to be high. Consequently, these results suggest that BF group's solid intake pattern is more desirable and that Korean lactating Mother's dependence on commercial weaning food is too high.

  • Numerical experiments are conducted using a three-dimensional baroclinic equation model and a Lagrangian method for clarifying the effect of th settling velocity on the suspended solids diffusion caused by the dredging and the reclamination works. Diffusion characteristics of the neutral particles and the weighting particles is experimented by the Lagrangian particles trajectory model, The results show that the diffusion characteristics of the suspended solids is effected by the settling velocity classified by the particles size in the density layered semi-closed bay. To estimate exactly the diffusion characteristics of the suspended solids and the contaminant with weight the three-dimensional baroclinic equation model and the three-dimensional Lagrangian particles trajectory model considering the settling velocity of the particle in the density layered semi-closed bay must be used.
