The compression behavior of semi-solid materials is studied from a viewpoint of yield criteria and analysis methods. To describe the behavior of materials in semi-solid state, several theories have been proposed by extending the concept of plasticity of porous compressible materials. In the present work, the upper-bound method and the finite element method are used to model the simple compression process using yield criteria of Kuhn and Doraivelu. Segregation between solid and liquid which cause defect of product is analysed for Sn-15%Pb and A356 alloys during deformation in semi-solid state. The comparison of analyses is made according to yield criteria and analysis methods. In addition, the analysis result for semi-solid dendritic Sn-15%Pb alloy is compared with the experimental result of Charreyron et al..

In Semi-Solid Forging, it is necessary to control the forming variables accurately in order to make near-net-shape products. Generally, the defects of products may occur due to liquid segregation which can be caused by the degree of deformation and condition of friction in Semi-Solid Forging, where the segregation is to be predicted by flow analysis. This paper presents the feasibility of theoretical analysis model using the new yield function which is proposed by Doraivelu et al. to the flow analysis of the semi-solid dendritic Sn-15%Pb alloys instead of adopting the yield criterion of Shima & Oyane which is used by Charreyron and usefulness of the adopted yield function. The distribution of the liquid fraction at various strains in radial direction and the influence of friction are estimated by Upper Bound Method.

The simple compression process is taken into consideration as the model to confirm the usefulness of the adopted yield function. In order to fad out an efficient way of topdressing nitrogen fertilizer in mulch-cropping system of onion(Allium cepa L.), solid, slow-release, and liquid forms of nitrogen fertilizers were allied to cv. 'Changnyungdaego' various number of times at different time, with 5 topdress applications of solid fertilizer serving as a control. Whole basal application of conventional solid fertilizer and 2 slow-release fertilizers were labor-saving and showed improved storage quality of bulbs, but resulted in poor plant growth and considerably low yield due to fertilizer shortage from early April. This suggests that topdress application is necessary. Liquid form of nitrogen fertilizer was more effective for plant growth and yield and saving labor than the solid form. Early applications was effective for increasing yield and storage quality of onion bulbs harvested. Thus two applications of liquid form of nitrogen fertilizer in February and March at rome month interval are recommended in mulch crowing system of onion.

Sediment yields from Imha watershed were simulated during 1993-2008 using Hydrologic Simulation Program-Fortran (HSPF). Using observed daily stream flow for 2004-2008 and hourly suspended solid concentration for three events during 2006, HSPF was calibrated and validated at the sites of Imha and Youngyang for stream flow and Dongchun and Jangpachun for sediment yield. The calibration and validation results represented high model efficiency for simulating daily stream flow and hourly suspended solid. The determination coefficients of calibration and validation were 0.90 and 0.81 for daily stream flow, and 0.91 and 0.86 for monthly stream flow, respectively. Based on model tolerances for calibration and validation of stream flow, HSPF performance for simulating stream flow represented 'very good'. The determination coefficients of calibration and validation were 0.94-0.96 and 0.95 for hourly sediment yields, respectively. The average yearly sediment yield during 1993-2008 was 122,290 ton/year and most of sediment yield (77 % of total yield) were generated from June to August. The calibrated HSPF simulated well the movement of water and eroded soil within Imha watershed.

Failure mechanisms for a solid propellant were discussed, and the stip-yield and the inherent flaw models were applied to them. Then, failure assessment diagram methods were investigated by means of modified two models. Fracture toughness tests using CCT(center-cracked tension) specimens made of a solid propellant were conducted to generate the failure assessment diagrams. The failure assessment diagram of the inherent flaw model was normalized in order to compare with that of the modified strip-yield model. From the comparison of two failure assessment diagrams, it was found that the failure assessment diagram of the modified inherent flaw model more conservatively assesses the failure than that of the modified strip-yield model.
The ecofriendly lifestyle has attracted considerable support for sustainable development. Natural dyes, as sustainable products, have become a research focus and development area for many scientists. Ecofriendly processing also supports circular sustainable development. This study effectively obtained tannins as a natural dye from merbau (Intsia bijuga) sawdust using water as an ecofriendly solvent. Merbau sawdust is an underutilized industrial waste. Temperature and solid-solvent ratio variations were performed to extract tannins from merbau sawdust. Temperature and solid-solvent ratio positively affected solution yield and tannin concentration. The optimal condition was identified using response surface methodology and experimental observations. A yield of 0.2217 g tannins/g merbau was obtained under the conditions of 333.15 K and 0.125 solid-solvent ratio. Extraction was controlled by convective mass transfer at the interface of solid particles.
Solid-phase refolding of immobilized proteins can be an effective way to reuse an immobilized enzyme column. Oriented immobilization methods are known to provide higher activity of the immobilized enzymes. In this study, using recombinant EK (enterokinase) as a model enzyme and a fusion protein, that consisted of recombinant human growth hormone and six His tag that was linked by the peptide of EK-specific recognition sequence, as a model substrate, we evaluated two oriented immobilization methods, i. e., reductive alkylation of N-terminus ${\alpha}$-amine and affinity interaction between poly-histidine tag and Ni-NTA (nickel-nitrilotriacetic acid). The immobilization yield, activity and cleavage of the immobilized enzymes, and the yield of solid-phase refolding were compared. The Ni affinity immobilization and the covalent immobilization yields were about 100% and 65%, respectively. But the specific activities were the same, about 50% of that of the soluble enzyme. The cleavage rate by the covalently immobilized EK was higher than the soluble enzyme and the side reaction of cryptic cleavage was significantly decreased. Covalently immobilized EK showed almost 100% refolding yield but the affinity immobilized EK showed only 70% yield, which suggested the covalent conjugation provided more rigid ‘reference structure’ for the solid-phase refolding. The monomeric hGH could be easily obtained by capturing the cleaved poly Histidine tag by the Ni affinity column.

A fusion protein, consisting of human epidermal growth factor as a recognition domain and human angiogenin as a toxin domain, can be used as a targeted therapeutic against breast cancer cells among others. The fusion protein was expressed as inclusion body in recombinant E. coli, and when the conventional, solution-phase refolding process was used the refolding yield was very low due to severe aggregation, probably due to the opposite surface charge due to vastly different pI values of each domain. Solid-phase refolding process exploiting ionic interactions between the solid matrix and the protein was tried, but the ionic binding yield was very low regardless of the resins and pH conditions used. To provide higher affinity toward the solid matrix, six lysine residues were tagged to the N -terminus of the hEGF domain When the cation exchange resins such as heparin- or CM-Sepharose were used as the matrix, the adsorption capacity increased 2.5-3 times and the subsequent refolding yield increased nearly IS times compared to the conventional process.
