  • Toxicity estimation of three nonionic surfactants (Brij 30, Tween 80, Triton X-lOO) and their effect on the biodegradation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the aqueous phase and soil slurry phase were investigated. Brij 30 was found to be the most biodegradable among the surfactants tested, and showed no substrate inhibition up to a concentration of 1.5 g/L. It was definitely utilized as a carbon source by the microorganisms. Naphthalene and phenanthrene in the aqueous phase were completely degraded by phenanthrene-acclimated cultures within 60 hours, but a substantial amount of naphthalene was lost due to the volatilization. The limiting step in the soil slurry bioremediation was bioavailablity by the microorganisms in the sand slurry and mass transfer from a solid to aqueous phase in the clay slurry. TOC analysis revealed that most of substrates including surfactant in the reactor were degraded. pH transition indicated that phenanthrene was metabolized into intermediates containing acid function.

  • $Dy^{3+}$ and $Eu^{3+}$-codoped $SrWO_4$ phosphor thin films were deposited on sapphire substrates by radio frequency magnetron sputtering by changing the growth and thermal annealing temperatures. The results show that the structural and optical properties of the phosphor thin films depended on the growth and thermal annealing temperatures. All the phosphor thin films, irrespective of the growth or the thermal annealing temperatures, exhibited tetragonal structures with a dominant (112) diffraction peak. The thin films deposited at a growth temperature of $100^{\circ}C$ and a thermal annealing temperature of $650^{\circ}C$ showed average transmittances of 87.5% and 88.4% in the wavelength range of 500-1100 nm and band gap energy values of 4.00 and 4.20 eV, respectively. The excitation spectra of the phosphor thin films showed a broad charge transfer band that peaked at 234 nm, which is in the range of 200-270 nm. The emission spectra under ultraviolet excitation at 234 nm showed an intense emission peak at 572 nm and several weaker bands at 479, 612, 660, and 758 nm. These results suggest that the $SrWO_4$: $Dy^{3+}$, $Eu^{3+}$ thin films can be used as white light emitting materials suitable for applications in display and solid-state lighting.

  • In this paper, we demonstrate the ability of Arabidopsis thaliana to detect different mixtures of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted by the common indoor fungus, Aspergillus versicolor, and demonstrate the potential usage of the plant as a bioindicator to monitor fungal VOCs in indoor air. We evaluated the volatile production of Aspergillus versicolor strains SRRC 108 (NRRL 3449) and SRRC 2559 (ATCC 32662) grown on nutrient rich fungal medium, and grown under conditions to mimic the substrate encountered in the built environment where fungi would typically grow indoors (moist wallboard and ceiling tiles). Using headspace solid phase microextraction/gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, we analyzed VOC profiles of the two strains. The most abundant compound produced by both strains on all three media was 1-octen-3-ol. Strain SRRC 2559 made several terpenes not detected from strain SRRC 108. Using a split-plate bioassay, we grew Arabidopsis thaliana in a shared atmosphere with VOCs from the two strains of Aspergillus versicolor grown on yeast extract sucrose medium. The VOCs emitted by SRRC 2559 had an adverse impact on seed germination and plant growth. Chemical standards of individual VOCs from the Aspergillus versicolor mixture (2-methyl-1-butanol, 3-methyl-1-butanol, 1-octen-3-ol, limonene, and ${\beta}-farnesene$), and ${\beta}-caryophyllene$ were tested one by one in seed germination and vegetative plant growth assays. The most inhibitory compound to both seed germination and plant growth was 1-octen-3-ol. Our data suggest that Arabidopsis is a useful model for monitoring indoor air quality as it is sensitive to naturally emitted fungal volatile mixtures as well as to chemical standards of individual compounds, and it exhibits relatively quick concentration- and duration-dependent responses.

  • Kinetic analysis was important to develope the biological nutrient removal process effectively. In this research, anoxic-anaerobic-aerobic system was operated to investigate kinetic behavior on the nutrient removal reaction. Nitrification and denitrification were important microbiological reactions of nitrogen. The kinetics of organic removal and nitrification reaction have been investigated based on a Monod-type expression involving two growth limiting substrates : TKN for nitrification and COD for organic removal reaction. The kinetic constans and yield coefficients were evaluated for both these reactions. Experiments were conducted to determine the biological kinetic coefficients and the removal efficiencies of COD and TKN at five different MLSS concentrations of 5000, 4200, 3300, 2600, and 1900 mg/L for synthetic wastewater. Mathematical equations were presented to permit complete evaluation of the this system. Kinetic behaviors for the organic removal and nitrification reaction were examined by the determined kinetic coefficient and the assumed operation condition and the predicted model formulae using kinetic approach. The conclusions derived from this experimental research were as follows : 1. Biological kinetic coefficients were Y=0.563, $k_d=0.054(day^{-1})$, $K_S=49.16(mg/L)$, $k=2.045(day^{-1})$ for the removal of COD and $Y_N=0.024$, $k_{dN}=0.0063(day^{-1})$, $K_{SN}=3.21(mg/L)$, $k_N=31.4(day^{-1})$ for the removal of TKN respectively. 2. The predicted kinetic model formulae could determine the predicted concentration of the activated sludge and nitrifier, investigate the distribution rate of input carbon and nitrogen in relation to the solid retention time (SRT).

  • Some species of the Trichoderma genus are reported as the major problem in oak wood mushroom production in Korea. In spite of economic loss by the fungi, scientific information on airborne Trichoderma species is not much available. To generate information for disease management development we analyzed airborne Trichoderma. A total of 1,063 fungal isolates were purely obtained from indoor air sampling of cultivation houses used for oak wood mushroom using sawdust media. Among the obtained isolates, 248 isolates were identified as Trichoderma fungi including T. harzianum, T. atroviride, T. citrinoviride, and T. pseudokoningii, by morphological and molecular analysis. T. harzianum was dominant among the four identified species. All the four Trichoderma species grew fast on solid nutrient media tested (potato dextrose agar [PDA], malt extract agar [MEA], Czapek's Dox + yeast extract agar [CYA] and cornmeal dextrose agar). Compact mycelia growth and mass spore production were better on PDA and CYA. In addition, T. harzianum and T. citrinoviride formed greenish and yellowish mycelium and spores on PDA and CYA. Greenish and yellowish pigment was saturated into PDA only by T. pseudokoningii. These four Trichoderma species could produce extracellular enzymes of sawdust substrate degradation such as β-glucosidase, avicelase, CM-cellulase, amylase, pectinase, xylanase, and protease. Their mycelia inhibited the growth of oak wood mushroom mycelia of two tested cultivars on dual culture assay. Among of eleven antifungal agents tested, benomyl was the best to inhibit the growth of the four Trichoderma species. Our results demonstrate that the airborne Trichoderma fungi need to be properly managed in the cultivation houses for safe mushroom production.

  • Laboratory experiments were conducted to investigate the performances of anaerobic filters packed with ceramic tube and pall-ring media treating a dairy waste. The media packing volume was 65% of effective volume of anaerobic filter. Organics removals of anaerobic filters were maintained above 80% even at an organics loading rate of $10kgCOD/m^3/d$, and this was comparable to aerobic treatment of organic wastes. Organics removals of the ceramic tube anaerobic filters were always lower than those of the pall-ring anaerobic filters due to intrinsic physical property of ceramic tube, especially lower void space which caused to clogging and entrapment of biogas, substrate transfer limitation, and irregular evolution of biogas leading to loss of solids and biomass. This was clearly observed in higher concentration of TSS in the effluent from the ceramic tube anaerobic filter despite of higher retention capacity of TSS compared with pall-ring media. Vertical distribution of organics and solids in the filters showed above 90% of organics and solids in influent were removed below 20% of reactor height, and 50% of remaining organics and solids were removed though media packing zone. Effluent quality from the anaerobic filter was heavily depended on media itself as well as suspended biomass formed below media. It is therefore concluded that the type of media played an important role in biomass accumulation arid gas-liquid-solid separation efficiency. Type of media did not affect the start-up behaviors of the anaerobic filter, and supernatant from anaerobic digested sludge showed a good performance as a seeding materials.

  • The effect of hydrogen peroxide on pretreatment of oakwood was investigated. Reaction temperature was $170^{\circ}C$ and reaction solutions used in pretreatment were aqueous ammonia, sulfuric acid and pure water. When 10% ammonia solution was used, the extents of delignification and hemicellulose recovery were 55% and 26%, respectively. These values were significantly higher as delinigfication and lower as hemicellulose recovery than those of acid hydrolysis. To overcome this problem, hydrogen peroxide was added into ammonia solution stream to increase hemicellulose recovery. But delignification and hemicellulose recovery were not increased as much as hydrogen peroxide loading was increased. And as hydrogen peroxide loading was increased, the decomposition of sugars solubilized from hemicellulose and cellulose were increased. So there were significant differences between the total amount in solid residue and liquid hydrolyzate, and the total amount in the original biomass. It was found that hydrogen peroxide added was reacted with substrate packed mostly in the front part of reactor. In order to increase hemicellulose recovery, it was necessary to treat with acidic solution than with alkali solution. Effect of hydrogen peroxide was higher in water than acid solution.

  • For the probiotic feed production from residual food waste by using the yeast Kluyveromyces marxianus, aerobic liquid fermentation was attempted at $35^{\circ}C$. After grinding finely, optimal fermentation conditions of the substrate was investigated in shaking incubator. By controlling water content yeast growth was studied at each different solid content of 5, 10 and 15% respectively. The most active growth of the yeast was shown at 10%. For the stimulation of the cell growth, mixed culture with Aspersillus oryzae was conducted in a 2 litre-jar fermenter. As the results, the yeast growth rate was increased, but the maximum viable cell count amounted was slightly higher as $3.5{\times}10^9/ml$ than single culture.

  • Using both experimental and theoretical approaches, we have investigated the adsorption properties of an organic molecule (HATCN), which is used in OLEDs as an efficient hole injection layer, on metal and inert surfaces. We have also studied the structural and electronic properties of such interfaces and the dependences on deposition thickness. We have observed different trends in work function changes with different surfaces. Our photoelectron spectroscopic measurements have revealed an abnormal phenomenon in HATCN on a metal (Cu) surface: the work function decreases at lower coverage (~monolayer) of HATCN on a metal (Cu) surface, but it increases back and becomes higher than that of a bare Cu surface at higher coverage. It has, on the contrary, been observed that the work function of graphene surface just increases as the HATCN coverage increases. Our first-principles density functional calculations has not only verified our experimental observations, but also disclosed the underlying mechanism of such abnormal and different work function behaviors. We have found that the change in work function results from mutual polarization induced by the geometrical deformation and the bond dipole formed at the interface due to the charge redistribution. At low coverage of HAT-CN on Cu substrate, the former reduces the work function significantly by pulling down the vacuum level, while the latter tends to push up the vacuum level resulting in the work function increase.
