(100-x)Zn xMg alloy films are prepared onto cold-rolled steel substrates; where x ranged from 0 to about 38 atomic %. The alloy films show microcrystalline and grain structures respectively, according to preparation conditions such as composition ratio of zinc and magnesium or gas pressures etc.. And X-ray diffraction analysis indicates not only the presence of Zn-Mg thin films with forced solid solution but also the one of $MgZn_2$ alloy films partly. In addition the influence of Mg/Zn composition ratio and morphology of the Zn-Mg alloy films on corrosion behavior is evaluated by electro-chemical anodic polarization tests in deaerated 3% NaCl solution. From this experimental results, all the prepared Zn-Mg alloy films showed obviously good corrosion resistance to compare with 99.99% Zn and 99.99% Mg Ingots for evaporation metal. It is thought that the Zn-Mg films with effective forced solid solution prepared by plasma enhanced PVD method, produces smaller and denser grain structure so that may improve the formation of homogeneous passive layer in corrosion environment.
N-(tert-Butoxycarbonyl)-O-(dimethythiophosphono)-L-tyrosine (6) and N-(tert-butoxycarbonyl)-O-(dicyanoethylthiophosphono)-L-tyrosine (15) were prepared as intermediates for the synthesis of thiophosphotyrosine-containing peptides. The reactivity and suitability of two compounds for the solid phase or solution phase peptide synthesis utilizing t-Boc chemistry were examined.
Despite a widely-held belief that the finite element method is the method for the solution of solid mechanics problems, which has for 30 years dissuaded solid mechanics scientists from paying any attention to the finite volume method, it is argued that finite volume methods can be a viable alternative. It is shown that it is simple to understand and implement, strongly conservative, memory efficient, and directly applicable to nonlinear problems. A number of examples are presented and, when available, comparison with finite element methods is made, showing that finite volume methods can be not only equal to, but outperform finite element methods for many applications.

The reproducibility of successive growth of Bi12TiO20(BTO) single crystals using a top-seeded solution growth (TSSG) pulling method was evaluated by measuring the lattice constants and their standard deviations. A substantial phase diagram in the region close to the stoichiometric BTO was established experimentally for this purpose, and the existence of a retrograde solid solution close to a BTO was clarified. It was emphasize that a starting solution, with a 10.0~10.1 mol% TiO2 concentration, results in large single crystals with a highly homogeneous lattice constant of within $\pm$1x10-4$\AA$, when the solidified fraction of the grown crystal is less than about 45%. A wavelength dispersion of refractive index was measured for the first time, an it was verified that the refractive index of BTO is larger than that of BSO(Bi12TiO20), allowing the voltage sensitivity of EOS higher than the case with BSO as a probe head.
Modeling and analyzing the dynamic behavior of fluid-soil-structure interaction problems are crucial in structural engineering. The solution to such coupled engineering systems is often not achievable through analytical modeling alone, and a numerical solution is necessary. Generally, the Finite Element Method (FEM) is commonly used to address such problems. However, when dealing with coupled problems with complex geometry, the finite element method may not precisely represent the geometry, leading to errors that impact solution quality. Recently, Isogeometric Analysis (IGA) has emerged as a preferred method for modeling and analyzing complex systems. In this study, IGA based on Non-Uniform Rational B-Splines (NURBS) is employed to analyze the seismic behavior of concrete gravity dams, considering fluid-structure-foundation interaction. The performance of IGA is then compared with the classical finite element solution. The computational efficiency of IGA is demonstrated through case studies involving simulations of the reservoir-foundation-dam system under seismic loading.

This work reports a set of approximate analytical solutions describing the initial transient process of close-contact melting between a rectangular parallelepiped solid and a flat plate on which either constant temperature or constant heat flux is imposed. Not only relative motion of the solid block tangential to the heating plate, but also the density difference between the solid and liquid phase is incorporated in the model. The thin film approximation reduces the force balance between the solid weight and liquid pressure, and the energy balance at the melting front into a simultaneous ordinary differential equation system. The normalized model equations admit compactly expressed analytical solutions which include the already approved two-dimensional solutions as a subset. In particular, the normalized liquid film thickness is independent of all pertinent parameters, thereby facilitating to define the transition period of close-contact melting. A unique behavior of the solid descending velocity due to the density difference is also resolved by the present solution. A new geometric function which alone represents the three-dimensional effect is introduced, and its properties are clarified. One of the representative results is that heat transfer is at least enhanced at the expense of the increase in friction as the cross-sectional shape deviates from the square under the same contact area.

A numerical study on the melting process inside an isothermal spherical capsule is made. It is assumed that the phase change medium of its solid phase is heavier than the liquid phase and therefore the unmelted solid core is continuously moving downward on account of gravity forces. Such a gravity-assisted melting is commonly characterized by the existence of a thin liquid film below the solid core. The present study is motivated to present a full-equation-based analysis of the influences of the initial subcooling and the natural convection on the fluid flow and heat transfer characteristics associated with the gravity-assisted melting. In the light of the solution strategy, the present study is substantially distinguished from the existing works in that the complete set of governing equations in both the melted and unmelted regions are resolved without subdivision of the solution domains. For example, the liquid film region and the upper melted region are treated here as one domain and thus obviating laborious efforts to couple them. Numerical results are obtained by varying the Rayleigh numbers and the degree of subcooling. For the range of parameters examined, the presence of subcooling was found to impede the melting rate. The dropping velocity of the unmelted solid core was observed to affect the natural convection in the liquid significantly. When compared with the available experimental data, much improved prediction was achieved.
The preparation and toughening of SiC-AIN solid solution from powder mixtures of $\beta$-SiC, AIN and $\alpha$-SiC by hot-pressing were studied in the 1870 to $2030^{\circ}C$ temperature range. The reaction of AIN and $\beta$-SiC(3C) powders causing transformation to the 2H(wurtzite) structure appeared to depend on hot-pressing temperatures and an additive of $\alpha$-SiC. For the composition of 49wt% SiC with 2 wt% $\alpha$-SiC and 47.5 wt% AIN47.5wt% SiC with 5 wt % $\alpha$-SiC at 203$0^{\circ}C$ for 1 h, th complete solid solutions with a single phase of 2H could be obtained. The appreciable amount of $\alpha$-SiC could develop the columnar inter-grains of 4H phase and the stable 2H phase with the relatively uniform composition and grain size distributions. The effect of $\alpha$-SiC on the phases present and compositional microstructures with columnar inter-grains was invetigated using X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. The fracture toughness and Vickers hardness of the hot-pressed solid solutions wre examined by the indentation-fracture-test method.
This paper presents a new approach to simulate fluid-solid interaction problems involving non-matching interfaces. The coupling between fluid and solid domains with dissimilar finite element meshes consisting of 4-node quadrilateral elements is achieved by using the interface element method (IEM). Conditions of compatibility between fluid and solid meshes are satisfied exactly by introducing the interface elements defined on interfacing regions. Importantly, a consistent transfer of loads through matching interface element meshes guarantees the present method to be an efficient approach of the solution strategy to fluid-solid interaction problems. An arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) description is adopted for the fluid domain, while for the solid domain an updated Lagrangian formulation is considered to accommodate finite deformations of an elastic structure. The stabilized equal order velocity-pressure elements for incompressible flows are used in the motion of fluids. Fully coupled equations are solved simultaneously in a single computational domain. Numerical results are presented for fluid-solid interaction problems involving nonmatching interfaces to demonstrate the effectiveness of the methodology.
Organically modifidied montmorillonites were synthesized from sodium montmorillonite and alkylammonium halids (stearyltrimethyl bromide and cetyltrimethyl bromide) by solid-solid reaction. The structure of the products by solid-solid reactions was similar to that observed in a conventional solution method.
