In this study, activated carbon was prepared from solid residue after lignin pyrolysis by using zinc chloride as an activation agent. The steam activation method was adopted to manufacture activated carbon from solid residue after lignin pyrolysis. The effect of process operation variables such as activation temperature, activation time and mass of activation agent added to char on the pore structure and specific surface area of the activated carbon was investigated. Activated carbon with high surface area and well-developed pore structure could be prepared, when solid residue after lignin pyrolysis was mixed with zinc chloride of 300 wt% and then the mixture was activated for 1 hour at $1000^{\circ}C$ in a stream of nitrogen.
The solid-state anaerobic digestion (SS-AD) has promoted the development and application for biogas production from biomass which operate a high solid content feedstock, as higher than 15% of total solids. However, the digested byproduct of SS-AD can be used as a fertilizer or as solid fuel, but it has serious problems: high moisture content and poor dewaterability. The organic residue from SS-AD has to be improved to address these problems and to make it a useful alternative energy source. Hydrothermal carbonization was investigated for conversion of the organic residue from the SS-AD of livestock waste to solid fuels. The effects of hydrothermal carbonization were evaluated by varying the reaction temperatures within the range of $180-240^{\circ}C$. Hydrothermal carbonization increased the calorific value through the reduction of the hydrogen and oxygen contents of the solid fuel, in addition to its drying performance. Therefore, after the hydrothermal carbonization, the H/C and O/C atomic ratios decreased through the chemical conversion. Thermogravimatric analysis provided the changed combustion characteristics due to the improvement of the fuel properties. As a result, the hydrothermal carbonization process can be said to be an advantageous technology in terms of improving the properties of organic waste as a solid-recovered fuel product.
This study aimed to effectively dissolve sulfide minerals through microwave-nitric acid leaching of invisible gold concentrate and then recover gold from the solid-residue with fire assay. For the purposes, this study conducted microwave-nitric acid leaching experiments to examine nitric acid concentration, time of microwave leaching, and sample addition effect. As results of the experiments, this study discovered that the weight loss rate of solid-residue increased as nitric acid concentration and microwave leaching time increased while weight loss rate decreased as sample addition increased. In an XRD analysis with solid-residue, it was discovered that pyrite completely disappeared when the nitric acid concentrate was 6 M and the microwave leaching time was 18 minutes. When a fire assay was carried out with solid-residue, gold particles with more content were recovered as nitric acid concentration and microwave leaching time increased whereas gold particles with more gold content were recovered as the sample addition decreased.
In this study, we investigated chemical characteristics of solid residues obtained from inorganic acid hydrolysis of hybrid poplar (Populus alba ${\times}$ glandulosa). Different concentration (72, 36, 18%) of sulfuric acid and hydrochloric acid were used for first hydrolysis step and second hydrolysis step were carried out after equally dilution to 4%. Solid residues after consecutive two step hydrolysis were named to RS72 (Residue from Sulfuric acid 72%), RS36, RS18, as well as RC36 (Residue from hydroChloric acid 36%) and RC18, respectively. The yield of RS decreased from 71.2% to 21.4% with increasing sulfuric acid concentration in the first hydrolysis step, whereas that of RC showed little difference (67.0% to 65.0%), irrespective of hydrochloric acid concentration. The lignin content in solid residue was 23.6% for both of RS36 and RS18, 25.6% for RC36 and 27.3% for RC18, respectively. The results of pyrolyzer-GC/MS showed that 24 cellulose derivatives (Levoglucosan, Furfural) and 21 lignin derivatives (Guaiacol, Syringol) were detected. Thermogravimetric analysis indicated that the yield of char increased and maximum wieght loss rate decreased with increasing lignin portion of solid residue. Therefore, structure of lignin was condensed effectively by sulfuric acid and by high concentration of acid.

Solubilization of plant ceil wall(tofu-residue) using enzyme complex obtained by Aspergillus niger CF-34 was attempted. The hydrolysis reaction was done at pH 4.0, $50^{\circ}C$, which were optimum pH and temperature of the enzyme, respectively. At the enzyme dosage of 2.5% (in terms of solid content of tofu-residue) and reaction time of 3 hr, the solubilizing percent of protein and carbohydrate were 62% and 50% respectively. Homogenization prior to enzyme reaction did not have much effect on tofu-residue solubilization. To improve solubility of tofu-residue, additional treatment such as alkali with 0.1% NaOH solution was found to be useful. The results showed that tofu-residue, which mainly consists of cell wall component of cellulose and hemicellulose, was not accessible to enzyme reaction and some prior treatment is required to enhance enzyme hydrolysis.
In this paper, the carbon resources recycling of the overview of coffee waste generation in Vietnam. Since few years, there has been a significant research studies was done in the areas of coffee waste generation areas and also waste water generation from coffee production. The coffee residue (solid) and waste water (liquid) both are caused the underground water contamination and also soil contamination. These residues contain high organic matter and acid content leads to the severe threat to environment. In second stage of coffee production process, the major solid residue was generated. Various solid residues such as spent coffee grounds, defective coffee beans and coffee husks) pose several environmental concerns and specific problems associated with each type of residue. Due to the unlimited usage of coffee, the waste generation is high. At the same time, some researchers have been investigated the spent coffee wastes are the valuable sources for various valuable compounds. Biodiesel or biomass productions from coffee waste residues are the best available utilization method for preventing the landfill problems of coffee waste residues.
Enzymatic treatment conditions for red ginseng residue (RGR) were investigated to apply RGR as a microbial medium. Polysaccharide hydrolyase and protease were screened to obtain high solid and carbohydrate yields, and a good degree of carbohydrate hydrolysis. The optimal dosage and reaction time for Viscozyme, the chosen polysaccharide hydrolyase, were found to be 1.0% (w/w) and 3 h, respectively. Of the tested proteases, Flavourzyme, whose optimal dosage was 0.5% (w/w), was selected. Co-treatment with the optimal dosages of Flavourzyme and Viscozyme increased solid yield, carbohydrate yield, and degree of carbohydrate hydrolysis by 76%, 65%, and 1,865%, respectively, over levels in non-treated RGR. The culture characteristics of Leuconostoc mesenteroides strain KACC 91459P grown in enzymatically hydrolyzed red ginseng residue (ERGR) and RGR suspensions were compared. After cultivation for 6 h, the viable cell counts of both cell suspensions rapidly increased to $1.3{\times}10^9$ colony-forming units (CFU)/g. Moreover, while the viable cell population drastically decreased to $2.4{\times}10^6\;CFU/g$ for cells grown in RGR medium, it was maintained in cells fermented in ERGR medium for 24 h.

Oil formation rate, composition of crude oil and formation of side products such as ${\alpha}-methyl$ styrene, ethyl benzene, benzene, toluene, dimer and trimer on thermal degradation of polystyrene were affected by various factors. Especially, formation of organic residue formed during reaction gave an important influence on formation of oil and composition of crude oil. Also, composition of formed crude oil showed a significant difference on reaction time. These results were caused by organic residue and carbonized solid formed during continuous reaction. Increase of residue and carbonized solid gave a decrease of yield of styrene and an increase of formation of ${\alpha}-methyl$ styrene, ethyl benzene, benzene, toluene. New reaction system was proposed for continuous operation at the thermal degradation of polystyrene.
This research expands investigations into the biomass resource potential associated with California's food processing industry by surveying industries within a two county region in the San Joaquin Valley, California, USA. A previous survey conducted in 2005 for the Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD) quantified residue and waste generation from food processors and food preparation businesses in the Sacramento region. The present survey investigates residue and waste streams from food processors located in Merced and Stanislaus Counties. Sixty food processors were identified to participate in the survey, of which 49 responded (82%) and data were acquired for 38 (63%) (6 facilities closed or moved, 8 decided not to participate). Within the two counties, total annual waste among survey respondents amounted to 24,044 dry tons of high moisture (${\geq}$60%) food residuals, 5,358 dry tons of low moisture (<60%) food residuals; and 23.7 million $m^3$ of wastewater containing 38,814 tons of biochemical oxygen demand ($BOD_5$). The total potential electric power generation from these food residues was estimated at approximately $7\;MW_e$. Total solid waste resource included in the survey response was estimated at about 10% of statewide residue generation for processors falling within the Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) System Major Group 20 (Food and Kindred Products) categories.
