  • We investigate how a solar eruption occurs in an environment where a solar wind exists during a pre-eruptive phase. To understand it, we have performed three-dimensional simulations based on a zero-beta magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) equations in various ways to drive an eruption with a solar wind. A pre-eruptive state is derived by applying a nonlinear force-free reconstruction method to a flux emergence full MHD simulation. We discuss what is the most appropriate way to drive a solar wind-related eruption.

  • Wind tunnel pressure tests were conducted on a 1:100 scale model of a large industrial building with solar panels mounted parallel to the flat roof. The model form was chosen to have the same aspect ratio as the Texas Tech University test building. Pressures were simultaneously measured on the roof, and on the topside and underside of the solar panel, the latter two combining to produce a nett panel pressure. For the configurations tested, varying both the lateral spacing between the panels and the height of the panels above the roof surface had little influence on the measured pressures, except at the leading edge. The orientation of the panels with respect to the wind flow and the proximity of the panels to the leading edge had a greater effect on the measured pressure distributions. The pressure coefficients are compared against the results for the roof with no panels attached. The model results with no panels attached agreed well with full-scale results from the Texas Tech test building.

  • As the available resources are gradually depleted, interest in renewable energy is increasing. Various energy harvesting technologies are emerging, and energy harvesting using solar, solar, and wind power is used in the highest range. Depending on the abnormal climate, solar heat and solar power differ in energy harvest, but the wind is fixed compared to the sun. Therefore, it was intended to maximize the effect of energy harvesting by using the venturi effect, which has a change in wind speed according to the turbine used for wind power generation and wind pressure. Therefore, in this paper, we want to see the difference in the amount of power generated by the turbine after increasing the wind speed using the venturi effect.

  • The Journal of the Korean Solar Energy Society is the first journal in South Korea that adopts wind energy as one of its subjects. Since 2000, more than 140 papers on wind energy have been published in the journal, which accounts for 8.5% of the total publication. However, in recent years, the number of published papers on wind energy has been decreasing steadily, and a reason for this decline is the significant dependence on a few specific institutions and authors. In this study, wind energy subjects were classified using the frequency analysis of the subject words extracted from the title, keywords, and abstract of wind energy papers using the text mining technique. In addition, the Korea Citation Index was used to perform quantitative level evaluation by subject and institution and to analyze the trends and characteristics of the wind energy field. Therefore, it was identified that in terms of the number of publications and citations, the main subject areas were resource/micrositing and policy/potential.

  • Recently, the use of renewable energy has been increasing to achieve carbon neutrality. The concept of a zero-energy building is also attracting attention. In this study, a preliminary study was conducted to analyze the feasibility of a hybrid wind and solar power generation system between buildings that utilize the building wind generated by the Venturi effect. For this purpose, the wind speed and sunshine hours were monitored in the area where the building wind blows by the Venturi effect, and the power generation depending on system types, areas, and season was estimated. Consequently, the wind power generation system showed a larger amount of power per area than solar power. The wind power systems can generate larger power if wind power blades are installed along the height of the building. As a preliminary study, this study verified the feasibility of the system utilizing building wind and suggested follow-up studies.

  • Aerodynamic pressures and forces were measured on a model of a solar panel containing six slender, parallel modules. Of particular importance to system design is the aerodynamically induced torque. The peak system torque was generally observed to occur at approach wind angles near the diagonals of the panel ($45^{\circ}$, $135^{\circ}$, $225^{\circ}$ and $315^{\circ}$) although large loads also occurred at $270^{\circ}$, where wind is in the plane of the panel, perpendicular to the individual modules. In this case, there was strong vortex shedding from the in-line modules, due to the observation that the module spacing was near the critical value for wake buffeting. The largest loads, however, occurred at a wind angle where there was limited vortex shedding ($330^{\circ}$). In this case, the bulk of the fluctuating torque came from turbulent velocity fluctuations, which acted in a quasi-steady sense, in the oncoming flow. A simple, quasi-steady, model for determining the peak system torque coefficient was developed.

  • Solar-terrestrial links in short-time scales(daily ~monthly) are extensively explored in recent years: such as a response of low cloud amounts to the Forbush decrease, a response of Northern Atlantic oscillation index to sudden increase in electric field intensity of solar wind and so on (e.g., Svensmark et al., 2009; Boberg & Lundstedt, 2002). In this study, we perform the superposed epoch analysis to see any possible response of the sea-level pressure over Korean peninsula to the fast solar wind stream. Data sets are daily values, and zero days are determined to be days when the solar wind velocity exceeds 800km/s. Average profile of superposed sea-level pressure shows a gradual increase during the first 2 days and a decrease afterward below the normal level with a low pressure condition maintained for a few days. This result indicates that the sea-level pressure may respond to the fast solar wind stream. In other words, the average profile of sea-level pressure mimics the average velocity profiles. The correlation coefficient between two average profiles is 0.80, with 2 day lag.

  • This paper reports the performance of Wind-PV(Photovoltaic) hybrid system. The output power of PV is affected by the environmental factors such as solar radiation and cell temperature. Also, the output power of wind system is generated with wind power. Integration of Wind and PV resources, which are generally complementary, usually reduce the capacity of the battery. This paper includes discussion on system reliability, power quality and effects of the randomness of the wind and the solar radiation on system design.
