  • Reduction of optical losses in crystalline silicon solar cells by surface modification is one of the most important issues of silicon photovoltaics. Porous Si layers on the front surface of textured Si substrates have been investigated with the aim of improving the optical losses of the solar cells, because an anti-reflection coating and a surface passivation can be obtained simultaneously in one process. We have demonstrated the feasibility of a very efficient porous Si AR layer, prepared by a simple, cost effective, electrochemical etching method. Silicon p-type CZ (100) oriented wafers were textured by anisotropic etching in sodium carbonate solution. Then, the porous Si layer were formed by electrochemical etching in HF solutions. After that, the properties of porous Si in terms of morphology, structure and reflectance are summarized. The surface morphology of porous Si layers were investigated using SEM. The formation of a porous Si layer about $0.1{\mu}m$ thick on the textured silicon wafer result in an effective reflectance coefficient Reff lower than 5% in the wavelength region from 400 to 1000nm. Such a surface modification allows improving the Si solar cell characteristics.

  • Optical modeling and characterization of transparent dye-sensitized solar cells (DSC) are presented to design and estimate DSC devices numerically. In order to model the inhomogeneous active layer of DSC, the porous structure of titanium oxide ($TiO_2$) and dye mixture, we prepared films consisting of layer by layer of the DSC's basic materials sequentially, and characterized the optical parameters of the films with the effective refractive index, which was extracted from the transmittance and reflectance measurements in ultra violet to near infra-red range. By using the effective refractive index, we made the optical model for DSC, and demonstrated that the optical model based on effective refractive index can be used to design and evaluate the performance of transparent-type DSC modules.

  • We investigate anisotropic texturing method for crystalline silicon solar cells with sodium carbonate solutions. Texturing temperature have a large effect on the density of pyramid. The dependence of the surface reflectance on solution temperature and the etching time was investigated. The surface morphology was observed by scanning electron microscope and the surface reflectance was evaluated. The reflection from the silicon surface in the wavelength range 400 to 1000nm is reduced to about 12%.

  • The crystalline silicon solar cells have been optical losses. but it can be reduced using light trapping by texture structure and anti-reflection coating. The high reflective index of crystalline silicon at solar wavelengths(400nm~1000nm) creates large reflection losses that must be compensated for by applying anti-reflection coating. In this study, the use of porous silicon(PSi) as an active material in a solar cell to take advantage of light trapping and blue-harvesting photoluminescence effect. Porous silicon is form by anodization and can be obtained in an electrolyte with hydrofluoric. We expect our research can results approaching to lower than 10% of several reflectance by porous silicon solar cells.

  • In this paper, we conducted MATLAB simulation using the reflectance formula and the Planck's black body radiation principle, for the purpose of identifying the opimum material and thickness of anti-reflective coating from double layered structures. We found that the optimum condition was obtained when refractive index of upper layer is 1.44 and that of lower layer is 2.29. As materials close to these refractive indices, $MgF_2$ as the upper layer and $HfO_2$, ZnS, $TiO_2$ as the lower layer were suggested. The best result in an average reflectance of 2.759% was obtained from a double layered structure of $MgF_2$ 94 nm/ZnS 55 nm.

  • Textured surface has been fabricated to reduce the light reflectance from the solar cells. The textured surface is very suitable for the multi-junction III-V solar cells because it can decrease the light reflectance over a large wavelength range. In this study, we have generated a textured structure on InAlP which is used for the window layer of the multi-junction III-V solar cells. Ultra-thin Pt layer (0.7 nm) has been used for wet etching mask. An array of nanosized pyramid shape formed on InAlP surface dramatically reduces the light reflectance up to 13.7% over a large wavelength range (i.e., $0.3{\sim}1.5{\mu}m$).

  • With the launch of Compact Advanced Satellite 500 series of various characteristics and the operation of KOMPSAT-3/3A, uses of high-resolution satellite images have been continuously increased. Especially, in order to provide satellite images in the form of ARD (Analysis Ready Data), various pre-processing such as geometric correction and radiometric correction have been developed. For pre-processing of high spatial satellite imagery, auxiliary information, such as solar zenith, solar azimuth and offnadir angle, should be required. However, most of the high-resolution satellite images provide the solar zenith and nadir angle for the entire image as a single variable. In this paper, the solar zenith and offnadir angle corresponding to each pixel of the image were calculated using RFM (Rational Function Model) and auxiliary information of the image, and the quality of extracted information were evaluated. In particular, for the utilization of pixel-based solar zenith and offnadir angle, pixel-based auxiliary data were applied in calculating the top of atmospheric reflectance, and comparative evaluation with a single constant-based top of atmospheric reflectance was performed. In the experiments using various satellite imagery, the pixel-based solar zenith and offnadir angle information showed a similar tendency to the auxiliary information of satellite sensor, and it was confirmed that the distortion was reduced in the calculated reflectance in the top of atmospheric reflectance.

  • Influence of Ag nanoparticles on optical and photovoltaic properties of, silicon substrates, silicon solar cells and glass have been investigated. Silver nanoparticles have been fabricated by evaporation of thin Ag layers followed by the thermal annealing. The surface plasmon resonance peak was observed in the absorbance spectrum at 470 nm of glass with deposited silver nanoparticles. It is demonstrated that deposition of silver nanoparticles on silicon substrates was accompanied with a significant decrease in reflectance at the wavelength 360-1100 nm and increase of the absorption at wavelengths close to the band gap for Si substrates. We studied influence of Ag nanoparticles on photovoltaic characteristics of silicon solar cells without and with common use antireflection coating (ARC). It is shown that silver nanoparticles deposited onto the front surface of the solar cells without ARC led to increase in the photocurrent density by 39% comparing to cells without Ag nanoparticles. Contrary to this, solar cells with Ag nanoparticles deposited on front surface with ARC discovered decrease in photocurrent density. The improved performance of investigated cells was attributed to Ag-plasmonic excitations that reduce the reflectance from the silicon surface and ultimately leads to the enhanced light absorption in the cell. This study showed possibility of application of Ag nanoparticles for the improvement of the conversion efficiency of waferbased silicon solar cells instead of usual ARC.
