A semitransparent photovoltaic-thermal (PV/T) air collector can produce electricity and heat simultaneously. To maximize the thermal and overall efficiency of the semitransparent PV/T air collector, its availability should be maximum; this can be determined through a Markov analysis. In this paper, a Markov model is developed to select an optimized number of semitransparent PV modules in service with five states and two states by considering two parameters, namely failure rate (λ) and repair rate (μ). Three artificial neural network (ANN) models are developed to obtain the minimum cost, minimum temperature, and maximum thermal efficiency of the semitransparent PV/T air collector by setting its type appropriately and optimizing the number of photovoltaic modules and cost. An attempt is also made to achieve maximum thermal and overall efficiency for the semitransparent PV/T air collector by using ANN after obtaining its minimum temperature and available solar radiation.
This paper describes a design strategy at conceptual design stage using RETScreen software tool for building application of renewable energy resources. Currently, government and public buildings are required to adopt renewable energy systems with a minimum requirement for the amount of renewable energy supply. Meanwhile, there is a certificate program for private office buildings to enhance propagation of renewable energy systems. When considering application of renewable energy systems to a building, it is worthwhile developing a method to determine optimal design sizes of renewable energy systems. In the paper, a design strategy is introduced with a couple of case studies to determine optimal capacities of each renewable energy system in a building and suggest to use the method to evaluate the system for the building certificate program and the mandatory renewable target program. Objective functions considered in the study are initial system cost and reduction of CO2 emissions from the system. In the optimization study, it is assumed that solar thermal collectors are installed to satisfy solar fraction of 60%. Other renewable energy systems such as ground-source heat pump, solar PV and non-renewable systems such as electric chiller and gas-fired boiler are sized using an optimal sizing method with RETScreen suggested the authors previously.

To improve efficiency of solar cells, it is important to make a light trapping structure to reduce surface reflectance for increasing absorption of sun light within the solar cells. One of the promising methods that can reduce surface reflectance is isotropic texturing with acid solution based on hydrofluoric acid(HF), nitric acid($HNO_3$), and organic additives. Anisotropic texturing with alkali solution is not suitable for multicrystalline silicon wafers because of its different grain orientation. Isotropic texturing with acid solution can uniformly etch multicrystalline silicon wafers unrelated with grain orientation, so we can get low surface reflectance. In this paper, the acid texturing solution is made up of only HF and $HNO_3$ for easy controlling the concentration and low cost compared to acid solution with organic additives. $HNO_3$ concentration and dipping time were varied to find the condition of minimum surface reflectance. Textured surfaces were observed Scanning Electron Microscope(SEM) and surface reflectance were measured. The best result of arithmetic mean(wavelength from 400 nm to 1000 nm) reflectance with acid texturing is 4.64 % less than alkali texturing.
Membrane distillation (MD), which can utilize low-grade thermal energy, has been extensively studied for desalination. By incorporating solar thermal energy, the solar membrane distillation desalination system (SMDDS) is a potential technology for resolving the energy and water resource problems. Small-scale SMDDS (s-SMDDS) is an attractive and viable option for the production of fresh water for small communities in remote arid areas. The minimum-cost design and operation of s-SMDDS are determined by a systematic method, which involves a pseudo steady state approach for equipment sizing and the dynamic optimization using overall system mathematical models. The s-SMDDS employing three MD configurations, including the air gap (AGMD), direct contact (DCMD) and vacuum (VMD) types, are optimized. The membrane area of each system is $11.5m^2$. The AGMD system operated for 500 kg/day water production rate gives the lowest unit cost of $5.92/m^3$. The performance ratio and recovery ratio are 0.85 and 4.07%, respectively. For the commercial membrane employed in this study, the increase of membrane mass transfer coefficient up to two times is beneficial for cost reduction and the reduction of membrane heat transfer coefficient only affects the cost of the DCMD system.
Identifying characteristics of heating and cooling systems requires estimation of thermal load of specific time interval, especially in cases that its system is operated intermittently, by using thermal storage, of in a partial load condition. Estimating the thermal load, however, needs to forecast hourly weather data variation. Hence, this paper attempts to examine characteristics of hourly ourdoor temperature variation as a preliminary research for the mathematical modeling of the hourly weather variation. Speculating characteristics of daily minimum and maximum temperature occurances, hourly outdoor temperature variation, and daily temperature differences in the increasing range ($07h{\sim}15h$) and decreasing range($15h{\sim}07h$), we were able to analyze changing patterns of daily temperature differences in each range in terms of daily solar amount, cloud ratio, and other weather data. Results from the multiple regression analysis enables us to conclude that daily differences in the increasing range are strongly affected last night temperature itself while the other range's differences are influenced by many weather data, which are solar amount, the variation of cloud, and the maximum temperature of the previous day.

In this paper we present a methodology to derive the temporal change of the magnetic shear angle from a series of vector magnetograms, with a high time cadence. This method looks for the minimum change of the shear angle between a pair of magnetograms, free from the $180^{\circ}$ ambiguity, and then accumulates this change over many successive pairs to derive the temporal change of magnetic shear. This methodology will work well if only the successive magnetograms occurred in an active region are well aligned and its helicity sign is reasonably determined. We have applied this methodology to a set of vector magnetograms of NOAA Active Region 9661 on October 19, 2001 by the new digital magnetograph at the Big Bear Solar Observatory (BBSO). For this work we considered well aligned magnetograms whose cross-correlation values are larger than 0.95. As a result, we have confirmed the recent report of Wang et al. that there was the abrupt shear change associated with the X1.6 flare. It is also demonstrated that the shear change map can be an useful tool to highlight the local areas that experienced the abrupt shear change. Finally, we suggest that this observation should be a direct support of the emergence of sheared magnetic fields.
We address a question of what are three main channels that can best translate other channels in ultraviolet (UV) and extreme UV (EUV) observations. For this, we compare the image translations among the nine channels of the Atmospheric Imaging Assembly on the Solar Dynamics Observatory using a deep learning model based on conditional generative adversarial networks. In this study, we develop 170 deep learning models: 72 models for single-channel input, 56 models for double-channel input, and 42 models for triple-channel input. All models have a single-channel output. Then we evaluate the model results by pixel-to-pixel correlation coefficients (CCs) within the solar disk. Major results from this study are as follows. First, the model with 131 Å shows the best performance (average CC = 0.84) among single-channel models. Second, the model with 131 and 1600 Å shows the best translation (average CC = 0.95) among double-channel models. Third, among the triple-channel models with the highest average CC (0.97), the model with 131, 1600, and 304 Å is suggested in that the minimum CC (0.96) is the highest. Interestingly they are representative coronal, photospheric, and chromospheric lines, respectively. Our results may be used as a secondary perspective in addition to primary scientific purposes in selecting a few channels of an UV/EUV imaging instrument for future solar satellite missions.
To evaluate the utilization suitability of solar radiation models, estimated solar radiation from 13 solar radiation models were verified by comparing with measured solar radiation at 5 study stations in South Korea. Furthermore, for the evaluation of evaporation estimates according to solar radiation models, 5 different evaporation estimation equations based on Penman's combination approach were applied, and evaporation estimates were compared with pan evaporation. Some solar radiation models require only meteorological data; however, some other models require not only meteorological data but also geographical data such as elevation. The study results showed that solar radiation model based on the ratio of the duration of sunshine to the possible duration of sunshine, maximum temperature, and minimum temperature provided the estimated solar radiation that most closely match measured solar radiation. Accuracy of estimated solar radiation also greatly improved when Angstrőm-Prescott model coefficients are adjusted to the study stations. Therefore, when choosing the solar radiation model for evaporation estimation, both data availability and model capability should be considered simultaneously. When applying measured solar radiation for estimating evaporation, evaporation estimates from Penman, FAO Penman-Monteith, and KNF equations are most close to pan evaporation rates in Jeonju and Jeju, Seoul and Mokpo, and Daejeon respectively.
Korean-Japanese Planet Search Program has been carried out since 2005 to search for planets around intermediate-mass giant stars (1.5-5.0 solar masses) by an international collaboration between Korean and Japanese researchers. In this program, we have been carrying out a precise radial velocity survey of about 190 G-type giant stars (6.21.9 solar masses) giant stars. These results extend the planet mass distribution of massive intermediate-mass stars to higher and lower mass region, and may further constrain substellar system formation mechanisms. We report the recent results and current status of Korean-Japanese Planet Search Program.
