The economic feasibility of a photovoltaic (PV) system is greatly influenced by the initial investment cost for system installation. Also, electricity generation by PV system is highly important. The profits competitiveness of PV system will be maximized through intelligent operation and maintenance (O&M). Here, we developed a microconverter which can maximize electricity generation from PV modules by tracking the maximum power point of PV modules, and help efficient O&M. Also, the microconverter mitigates current mismatch caused by shading, hence maximize power generation. The microconverters were installed PV modules and demonstrated through the field tests. Power outputs such as voltage, string current were measured with variuos weather environments and partial shadings. We found that PV modules with the microconvertors shows 12.05% higher power generation compared to the reference PV modules.

The Korean government announced various energy policies, such as the to reduce 37% of the business-as-usual (BAU) greenhouse gas emissions by 2030. The policies aim to increase the renewable electricity generation ratio to 20% by 2030. PVT is a hybrid technology, which combines photovoltaic (PV) and solar collectors. It is capable of generating electricity and thermal energy simultaneously. It has a great potential to be used as a renewable and clean solar energy. However, there exists a shortage of space for the installation of PVT systems in Korea. To overcome this, in this paper proposes four types of soundproof wall PVT air channels, which were designed and optimized, based on the CFD (Computation Fluid Dynamic) analysis results. The thermal energy generation for multiple PVT units connected in series and pressure drop sensitivity were analyzed, depending on inlet velocity.
Current feed-in tariffs(FIT) of Electricity generating from new and renewable energy sources are reappraised with the corrected formula of levelized generation cost(LGC) of utility power. The LGC of new and renewable electricity should be formulated in explicitly reflecting the capital cost and corporate tax during the economic life cycle based on its realistic application data. An applicable term of the FITs should, especially, be equal to the economic life cycle. The revised FITs issued in 2006 were, however, derived from the incorrect formula described in the study of KERI(Korea Electrotechnology Research Institute), and consequently misestimated. The reappraisal values for FIT of new and renewable electricity were shown and interpreted in this paper. An FIT of PV more than 30 kW, for example, should be 972.86 won/kWh instead of current 677.38 won/kWh increasing 43.6%. An upward revision of other FITs for new and renewable electricities should also be required in the range of 8.6% to 47.3%.
A photovoltaic/thermal (PVT)solar system is the solar technology that allows for simultaneous conversion of solar energy into both electricity and heat. This paper compared the performance of PVT system with a conventional PV module and solar collector and analyzed electrical and thermal efficiency of PVT system in terms of solar irradiance and inlet temperature of the working fluid. Based on the experimental data, thermal and electrical efficiencies of he glazed PVT system were57.9% and14.27% under zero reduced temperature condition which were lower by 13.6% than the solar thermal absorber plate and by 0.08% than the PV module respectively. For the unglazed PVT system it had lower thermal efficiency than the solar thermal absorber plate but higher electrical performance than the PV module due to the cooling effect by the working fluid. However, total efficiency of the glazed PVT system was72.2% which was higher than combined efficiencies of the solar collector and PV module. Besides, total efficiency of the PVT system would be much higher if calculated based on unit area.
Photovoltaic (PV) power generation is the world's best and largest renewable energy that generates electricity with infinite sunlight. Solar cell modules are a component of photovoltaic power generation and must have a long-term durability of at least 25 years. The development of processes and equipment that can be recovered through the recycling of metals and valuable metals when the solar module's lifespan is over has been completed to the level of commercialization, but few processes have been developed that require repair due to initial defects. This is mainly due to the economic problems caused by remaking. However, if manufacturing processes such as repairing solar cell modules that have been proven to be early defects are established and the technical review of long-term reliability and durability reaches a certain level, it is considered that it will be a recommended process technology for environmental economics. In this paper, assuming that a defective solar cell module occurs artificially, a manufacturing process for replacement of solar cells was developed, and a technical verification of the manufacturing technology was conducted through long-term durability evaluation in accordance with KS C 8561. Through this, it was determined that remanufacturing technology for solar cell replacement of solar cell modules that occurred in a short period of time after installation was possible, and the research results were announced through a journal to commercialize solar modules using manufacturing technology in the solar market in the future.

Global environmental concerns and the ever increasing need of energy, coupled with steady progress in renewable energy technologies, are opening up new opportunities for utilization of renewable energy resources. Distributed electricity generation is a suitable option for sustainable development thanks to the load management benefits and the opportunity to provide electricity to remote areas. Solar energy being easy to harness, non-polluting and never ending is one of the best renewable energy sources for electricity generation in present and future time. Due to the random and intermittent nature of solar source, PV plants require the adoption of an energy storage and management system to compensate fluctuations and to meet the energy demand during night hours. This paper presents an efficient, economic and technical model for the design of a MPPT based grid connected PV with battery storage and management system. This system satisfies the energy demand through the PV based battery energy storage system. The aim is to present PV-BES system design and management strategy to maximize the system performance and economic profitability. PV-BES (photovoltaic based battery energy storage) system is operated in different modes to verify the system feasibility. In case of excess energy (mode 1), Li-ion batteries are charged using CC-CV mechanism effectively controlled by fuzzy logic based PID control system whereas during the time of insufficient power from PV system (mode 2), batteries are used as backup to compensate the power shortage at load and likewise other modes for different scenarios. This operational mode change in PV-BES system is implemented by State flow chart technique based on SOC, DC bus voltages and solar Irradiance. Performance of the proposed PV-BES system is verified by some simulations study. Simulation results showed that proposed system can overcome the disturbance of external environmental changes, and controls the energy flow in efficient and economical way.
To demonstrate the desalination system, the demo-plant was scheduled to be installed. The system was planned to use solar thermal collector as heat source and PV as electricity source. For the design of the desalination demonstration system, firstly the solar thermal system would be well designed from the result between the supplied heat into the fresh water generator and the fresh water yield. The generator for demonstration system was chosen as the fresh water generator of the single stage and effect with plate-type heat exchanger using low pressure evaporation method. The test facility for the tests to reveal the relationship between the fresh water yield and the supplied heat flow rate was designed and manufactured. The maximum fresh water yield of two fresh water generators applied in this study was designed as 1.5 Ton/day. The parameters relating with the performance of fresh water generator are known as sea water inlet temperature, hot water inlet temperature, and hot water flow rate. Through the experiments, this study firstly showed detail operation characteristics of the generator and designed the solar thermal system for the demonstration system.
In this study, the performance and behavior of solar heating system according to the system control scheme, variable flow control (proportional control) and constant flow control (on-off control) was carried out by experiment. The on-off control is used generally for solar thermal system by now. But the proportional control is used for the solar district heating system which is supplied the higher temperature of water than that of desired. The proportional control logic that pump speed is varied in an attempt to maintain a specified outlet temperature of solar heating system was developed and tested for the use widely for the small and medium solar thermal system. The results are as following. First, the proportional controller which is made here could be adopted the characteristics for setting temperature control. Second, the proportional control is better than the on-off control in the side of the performance of thermal stratification in storage tank. Third, the operating energy(electricity consumption by pump) of solar thermal system can be saved more than 60% using the proportional control comparing to the on-off control.

A Photovoltaic/Thermal(PVT) solar system consists of PV module and thermal absorber plate which convert the absorbed solar radiation into electricity and heat. Meaningful researches and development (R&D) on the PVT technologies have been performed since the 1970s. This paper presents a review of the previous works covering the various types of PVT and their performance analysis in terms of electrical and thermal efficiency. This review compares electrical and thermal efficiency of the different types of PVT collectors and analyzes the parameters affecting PVT performance. Based on the literature review, box channel type PVT with unglazed, or flat plate PVT with glazed have the highest efficiency among them. From the literature review, R&D should be carried out aiming at improving their overall electrical and thermal efficiency, cutting down the cost, and making them more competitive in the energy consumption market.
