In order to examine the heat transfer characteristic of a soil warming system and effects of soil warming on the greenhouse heating load, control experiments were performed in two greenhouses covered with double polyethylene film. One treated the soil warming with an electric heat wire and the other treated a control. Inside and outside air temperature, soil temperature and heat flux, and heating energy consumption were measured under the set point of heating temperature of $5,\;10,\;15,\;and\;20^{\circ}C$, respectively. Soil temperatures in a soil warming treatment were observed $4.1\;to\;4.9^{\circ}C$ higher than a control. Heating energy consumptions decreased by 14.6 to 30.8% in a soil warming treatment. As the set point of heating temperature became lower, the rate of decrease in the heating energy consumptions increased. The percentage of soil heat flux in total heating load was -49.4 to 24.4% and as the set point of heating temperature became higher, the percentage increased. When the set point of heating temperature was low in a soil warming treatment, the soil heat flux load was minus value and it had an effect on reducing the heating load. Soil heat flux loads showed in proportion to the air temperature difference between the inside and outside of greenhouse but they showed big difference according to the soil warming treatment. So new model for estimation of the soil heat flux load should be introduced. Convective heat transfer coefficients were in proportion to the 1/3 power of temperature difference between the soil surface and the inside air. They were $3.41\;to\;12.42\;W/m^{2}^{\circ}C$ in their temperature difference of $0\;to\;10^{\circ}C$. Radiative heat loss from soil surface in greenhouse was about 66 to 130% of total heating load. To cut the radiation loss by the use of thermal curtains must be able to contribute for the energy saving in greenhouse.

The temperature of root zone is known as an important factor for the growth of crops and reduction of energy in greenhouse. The purpose of this study was to design the solar energy supply system to keep the optimum condition of root zone by soil warming. As a result of this study, soil warming compared with no warming changed on a large scale temperature rise effect by depth of soil. The greenhouse's inner temperature have an effect on the temperature of surface up to 15 cm, rised to about 1 hour after warming. In case of the temperature fluctuation, soil temperature was about $12^{\circ}C$ up to 15${\sim}$25 cm and it was $13.4^{\circ}C$ at greater depths. This results showed that the position of root zone was very different after 3 weeks of growth.
Root zone temperature have influenced on protected cultivation in winter season. Especially root zone temperature is acted on limiting factor in crop cultivation. This study was conducted to obtain optimum temperature of root zone in Protected cultivation Root zone was warmed by heated water($28^{\circ}C$) flowing through the PPC pipe(${\phi}15$) buried depth 40 cm. And the flowing water was heated by solar system. Minimum air temperature during night time was set at $14^{\circ}C$ and maximum air temperature during day time was set at $28~30^{\circ}C$ the growing period of cucumber was from Nov. 6, 1996 to Jan. 30, 1997. The results are summarized as follows. 1. Average soil temperature at 15~20 cm depth was $22^{\circ}C$ at warming plots, $17~18^{\circ}C$ at non-warming plots 2. Early growth in leaf length, stem diameter, number of leaves and leaf area for 30 days after planting were accelerated by root zone warming. Especially, the grawing rate of soil warming plots was higher 27% in leaf length, 51% in leaf number, 150% in leaf area than non-warming Plots. Above-ground and underground part of warming plots was higher 117%, 56% than non-warming plots. 3. In total yield analysis, number of fruits were 614 in soil warming and 313 in non-warming plots. In the result, total yield of soil warming plots was increased with 196% than non-warming plots. 3. In total yield analysis. number of fruits were 614 in soil warming and 313 in non-warming plots. In the result. total yield of soil warming plots was increased with 196% than non-warming plots.

The temperature of root zone was known as an important factor for the growth of crops and reduction of energy in greenhouse. The purpose of this study was to design the apposite inflow of calories per the unit area by comparison of temperature in the warmed and non-warmed soil. The energy needed for soil warming about pipe length showed the change of temperature on inflow and outflow as $2^{\circ}C{\sim}3^{\circ}C$(average $2.5^{\circ}C$). Therefore, the inflow per the unit hour was 3,450, 57,5 kcal/$h{\cdot}m^2$ on soil heating respectively. The non-warmed soil temperature in greenhouse made a difference by depth and it was partially affected inner temperature under 15 cm, but it was not above 15 cm. The soil temperature would be raised over $5^{\circ}C$ than non-warmed soil to increase effect of soil warming. Therefore, the inflow per the unit area that should be provided was about 100 kcal/$h{\cdot}m^2$.
This study was carried out to estimate the warmed water irrigation and the warmed soil efficiency on protected cultivation of cucumber in winter season. The water of 28$^{\circ}C$ was continuously supplied for soil warming and that is $25^{\circ}C$ for warmed water irrigation. Cucumber growth was analyzed when tile soil kept up the optimum temperature in the root zone. The cucumber growth are compared with the warmed soil plots. isolated warmed soil plots and non-warmed soil plots. The cucumber growth in warmed soil plots and isolated warmed soil plots were 20~50% higher than non-warmed soil plots compare to that by the warmed irrigation. In the non-warmed soil plots, the stem diameter and the number of leaves in the warmed water irrigation plots are 10% higher than those in the normal water irrigation plots. The yields in isolated warmed soil plots were 37~38% higher than non-warmed soil plots and those in warmed soil plots were 85~96% higher than non-warmed soil plots. The fruit length, weight and diameter in warmed soil plots were 15% higher than those in the non-warmed plots.
Caenorhabditis elegans is a free living soil nematode and thus in its natural habitat, C. elegans encounters many different species of soil bacteria. Although some soil bacteria may be excellent sources of nutrition for the worm, others may be pathogenic. Thus, we undertook a study to understand how C. elegans can identify their preferred food using a simple behavioral assay. We found that there are various species of soil bacteria that C. elegans prefers in comparison to the standard laboratory E. coli strain OP50. In particular, two bacterial strains, Bacillus mycoides and Bacillus soli, were preferred strains. Interestingly, the sole feeding of these bacteria to wild type animals results in extended lifespan through the activation of the autophagic process. Further studies will be required to understand the precise mechanism controlling the behavior of identification and selection of food in C. elegans.
This experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of soil heating on control of root-knot nematode(Meloidogyne incognita Chitwood) by root zone warming system. Root zone was warmed by hot water flowing through pipe set at 35cm depth from the ridge The lowest soil temperatures at 20cm depth were set at 3$0^{\circ}C$, 4$0^{\circ}C$, $50^{\circ}C$ and non-warming. under soil submerging condition and non-submerging condition. Soil heating was done for 5 days(120 hours) from Aug. 1 to Aug. 5. The root-knot nematode juvenile densities of 4$0^{\circ}C$ under submerging condition. and $50^{\circ}C$ under non-submerging condition were 0 which was expected lower than the economic injury level. The contents of OM P$_2$$O_{5}$, Ca Mg and EC in soil were decreased by root zone warming The EC was considerably lowered under submerging condition.
This study was conducted to investigate the effects of warming and precipitation manipulation on seasonal changes in fine root production (FRP) and fine root mortality (FRM) of 33-month-old Pinus densiflora seedlings for two years. The seedlings in warmed plots were warmed with $3.0^{\circ}C$ higher using infrared heaters. The air temperature of warmed (TW) plots was set to increase by $3^{\circ}C$ compared to temperature control (TC) plots, and the three precipitation manipulation consisted of precipitation decrease (-30%; PD), precipitation increase (+30%; PI) and precipitation control (0%; PC). FRP ($mm\;mm^{-2}\;day^{-1}$) was significantly altered by only precipitation manipulation (PC: 3.57, PD: 4.59, PI: 3.02), while warming had no significant effect on the FRP and FRM. Meanwhile, interactions between warming and precipitation manipulation and seasonal changes had no significant effects on FRP and FRM. However, the influences of seasonal changes in soil temperature and soil moisture on FRP and FRM were different according to warming. In TW plots, FRP showed a positive relationship with soil temperature, and FRM showed a negative relationship with soil moisture. On the other hand, in the TC plots, FRP showed a positive relationship with soil moisture, and there were no relationships between FRM and soil temperature and moisture. These results indicate that the climate factors that affect FRP and FRM might vary as the warming progresses.

This study investigated future changes in the Arctic permafrost features and related biogeochemical alterations under global warming. The Community Land Model (CLM) with biogeochemistry (BGC) was run for the period 2005 to 2099 with projected future climate based on the Special Report on Emissions Scenarios (SRES) A2 scenario. Under global warming, over the Arctic land except for the permafrost region, the rise in soil temperature led to an increase in soil liquid and decrease in soil ice. Also, the Arctic ground obtained carbon dioxide from the atmosphere due to the increase in photosynthesis of vegetation. On the other hand, over the permafrost region, the microbial respiration was increased due to thawing permafrost, resulting in increased carbon dioxide emissions. Methane emissions associated with total water storage have increased over most of Arctic land, especially in the permafrost region. Methane releases were predicted to be greatly increased especially near the rivers and lakes associated with an increased chance of flooding. In conclusion, at the end of $21^{st}$ century, except for permafrost region, the Arctic ground is projected to be the sink of carbon dioxide, and only permafrost region the source of carbon dioxide. This study suggests that thawing permafrost can further to accelerate global warming significantly.
This study was conducted to determine the changes of the ecological niche breadth and niche overlap of Quercus acutissima and Quercus variabilis under elevated $CO_2$ concentrations and under elevated temperature conditions. We investigated the growth responses by environmental factor, $CO_2$ concentration, air temperature, light, soil moisture and nutrients. Rising $CO_2$ concentration was treated with 1.6 times than control (ambient) and increased temperature with $2.2^{\circ}C$ above the control (ambient) in the glass greenhouse. Ecological niche breadth and niche overlap was calculated the two oak species (Q. acutissima and Q. variabilis), which were cultivated with light, soil moisture and nutrient gradients at four levels. As a result, the ecological niche breadth of Quercus acutissima was determined to be increased under the warming treatment, but decreased under soil moisture and nutrient environments. The ecological niche breadth of Quercus variabilis was increased under light, soil moisture and nutrients of the warming treatment than control. Ecological niche overlap between Quercus acutissima-Quercus variabilis was increased under light of the warming treatment than control, but decreased under soil moisture and nutrient environments. These results means that two oak species are more severe competition in light environments than soil moisture and nutrient environments. According to analyses of the Cluster and PCA, the two oak species were more sensitive react under light environment than to elevated $CO_2$ concentration or elevated temperature.
