Soil bacteria were screened for the ability to control cucumber anthracnose caused by Colletotrichum orbiculare through induced systemic resistance(ISR). Sixty-four bacterial strains having in vitro antifungal activity were used for selecting ISR-inducing strains in cucumber. Cucumber seeds(cv. Baeknokdadagi) were sown in potting mixtures incorporated with the soil bacteria, at a rate of ca. $10^8$ cells per gram of the mixture. Two week-old plants were then transplanted into the steam-sterilized soil. Three leaf-stage plants were inoculated with a conidial suspension($5{\times}10^5$ conidia/ml) of C. orbiculare. Diseased leaf area(%) and number of lesions per $cm^2$ leaf were evaluated on third leaves of the plants, $5{\sim}6$ days after inoculation. Among 64 strains tested, nine strains, GC-B19, GC-B35, GK-B18, MM-B22, PK-B14, RC-B41, RC-B64, RC-B65, and RC-B77 significantly(P=0.05) reduced anthracnose disease compared to the untreated control. In contrast, some bacterial strains promoted susceptibility of cucumber to the disease. From the repeated experiments using the nine bacterial strains, GC-B19, MM-B22, PK-B14, and RC-B65 significantly(P=0.05) reduced both diseased leaf area(%) and number of lesions per $cm^2$ leaf in at lease one experiment. These strains with control efficacy of $37{\sim}80%$ were determined to be effective ISR-inducing strains.
Calibration chamber tests were conducted on open -ended model piles driven into dried siliceous sands with different soil conditions in order to clarify the effect of soil conditions on plug capacity, The model pile used in the test series was devised so that the bearing capacity of an open -ended pile could be measured out into three components , outside shaft resistance. plug resistance and tip resistance. Under several assumption, the value of earth pressure coefficient in the soil plug is calculated. It is gradually reduced with increase in the longitudinal distance from the pile tip. At the bottom of soil plug, it tends to decrease with increase in the penetration depth and relative density, and to increase with the increase of ambient pressure. In comparison of measured and calculated plug capacities using the one -dimensional analysis, we note that API code and one -dimensional analysis combined with P suggested by Randolph et al. and O'Neill et al. result in great underestimation of the plug capacity. Therefore, based on the test results, an empirical equation was suggested to compute the earth pressured coefficient to be used in the calculation of plug capacity using the one -dimensional analysis. and it produces proper plug capacities for all soil conditions.
This paper describes the applicability of FEA(Finite Element Analysis) to the simulation of pile pullout behavior under various soil conditions (relative density and fines content), in order to evaluate reasonably the pullout resistance of pile. That is, the results of previous research (You et al., 2018) were analyzed by FEA under the same conditions. The FEA results showed that axisymmetric analysis using virtual ground was able to evaluate the skin friction of the pile. Also, axisymmetric analysis, which can apply the shear resistance characteristics of the pile-soil interface in various soil conditions, could be used as an analytical method that can simulate a reasonable pile pullout behavior. Therefore, the analytical model proposed in this study was able to simulate appropriately the pullout behavior based on the stress-strain relationship of the pile-soil interface.
This study describes model tests on instrumented rectangular-shaped passive row piles embedded in horizontal sand-ground undergoing lateral soil movement. We tried to find the property of row piles dependent on the shape of pile, including the position of the pile in row, pile spacing, and soil movement. The results of test are as follows. The lateral earth pressure diagram variously appeared to be triangle, trapezoid and rectangular by shape and position of pile. The outer pile has a larger bending moment than the inner pile in the case of B-type, the inner piles has larger one than outer pile in case of H-type. $R_f$ (the ratio of resistance to lateral soil movement) was found to increase with increasing pile spacing irrespective of pile-shape. Y/L (location of action of lateral resistance force) for $d_s$ (displacement of soil) and $S_h$ (spacing of pile) appeared to be nearly regular position, and H-type is higher than B-type.
SI anchor means the soil improvement anchor. The ground for supporting anchor is improved by JSP, and as a result, SI anchor body has about 80cm in diameter. SI anchor shows high pullout resistance by the frictional force between anchor body and ground, and the bearing capacity of anchor body. Especially the frictional force increases very much with increasing diameter of anchor body improved by JBP. In this study, model and field tests are made to analyse the mechanism of pullout resistance of SI anchor. Through model tests for the SI anchor in air dried sandy ground, strain fields of ground around SI anchor surface are analysed by a photo analysis method using the latex membrane on the wall of soil tank. The results of field tests are analysed by the strains measured by 10 strain gages attached on the inner wall of specially designed PVC pipe embedded in anchor body, and the strains of anchor body are also measured in the model tests.
The purpose of this study is to develop design equations to calculate optimum specifications and dimensions such as weight, engine horsepower, etc. of the tractor necessary to perform stable rotary tillage. The main results of this study are as follows. 1. A wheel-lug ought to receive a special resistance in downward direction which resists the lug's upward motion on wet sticky soil surface. The authors introduce a new academic name of the "lift resistance(上昇抵抗力, 상승저항력)" for such a force which resists retraction of a wheel lug from the soil in the upward trochoidal motion. This force is composed of the frictional force acting on the trailing and the leading lug side, and the "perpendicular adhesion(鉛直付着力, 연직부착력)" acting on the lug face and the undertread face on adhesive soil. 2. The "lift resistance ratio(上昇抵抗力係數, 상승저항력계수)" and the "perpendicular adhesion ratio(鉛直付着力係數, 연직부착력계수)" were defined, which are something similar to the definition of the motion resistance ratio, the traction coefficient, etc. 3. The design equation of the optimum weight of a rotary tiller mounted on the tractor derived by calaulating the forces acting on the rotary blades. 4. The design equations to calculate optimum specifications and dimensions such as weight, engine horsepower, etc. of the tractor necessary to perform stable rotary tillage were derived. It becomes clear that the optimum weight of a rotary tiller and a tractor can be estimated in planning design by means of putting about 21 design factors of the target into the equation. These equations are useful for planning design to estimate the optimum dimensions and specifications of a rotary tiller as well as a tractor by the use of known and/or unknown design parameters.
Cast in situ and grouted concrete helical piles with 150-200 mm diameter half cylindrical ribs have become an economical and effective choice in Shanghai, China for uplift piles in deep soft soils. Though this type of pile has been successful used in practice, the reinforcing mechanism and the contribution of the ribs to the total resistance is not clear, and there is no clear guideline for the design of such piles. To study the inclusion of ribs to the contribution of shear resistance, the shear behaviour between silty sand and concrete slabs with parallel ribs at different spacing and angles were tested in a large direct shear box ($600mm{\times}400mm{\times}200mm$). The front panels of the shear box are detachable to observe the soil deformation after the test. The tests were modelled with three-dimensional finite element method in ABAQUS. It was found that, passive zones can be developed ahead of the ribs to form undulated failure surfaces. The shear resistance and failure mode are affected by the ratio of rib spacing to rib diameter. Based on the shape and continuity of the failure zones at the interface, the failure modes at the interface can be classified as "punching", "local" or "general" shear failure respectively. With the inclusion of the ribs, the pull out resistance can increase up to 17%. The optimum rib spacing to rib diameter ratio was found to be around 7 based on the observed experimental results and the numerical modelling.
Soil-borne barley viruses were investigated in 42 regions during 1999-2003, in Korea. BaYMV, BaMMV and SbWMV symptoms were found in 37 regions. Crops resistance to mosaic viruses were investigated by growing them on 10 regions infected with soil-borne viruses. It was found that 10 unhulled barley, 6-beer bar]ey, 16 rye and 2 wheat species showed resistance to virus. Most of 15 Japanese cultivars showed infection symptoms but many of them showed relatively higher resistance in Ikasan, Youngkwang and Yesan areas region. Mixed virus infection was investigated and it was found that inter-regional species except in 10 areas, were mix infected with BaYMV and BaMMV. But in Youngkwang area all of crop species except Secheon-6 were infected only with BaYMV. Japanese cultivars were mixed infected with BaMMV and BaYMV except at Yesan that were infected only with BaYMV.
In this paper, due to the need for cutting cement-soil group pile composite foundation under the 7-story masonry structure of Zhenghe District and the shield tunnel of Zhengzhou Metro Line 5, a field test was conducted to directly cut cement-soil single pile composite foundation with diameter Ф=500 mm. Research results showed that the load transfer mechanism of composite foundation was not changed before and after shield tunnel cut the pile, and pile body and the soil between piles was still responsible for overburden load. The construction disturbance of shield cutting pile is a complicated mechanical process. The load carried by the original pile body was affected by the disturbance effect of pile cutting construction. Also, the fraction of the load carried by the original pile body was transferred to the soil between the piles and therefore, the bearing capacity of composite foundation was not decreased. Only the fractions of the load carried by pile and the soil between piles were distributed. On-site monitoring results showed that the settlement of pressure-bearing plates produced during shield cutting stage accounted for about 7% of total settlement. After the completion of pile cutting, the settlements of bearing plates generated by shield machine during residual pile composite foundation stage and shield machine tail were far away from residual pile composite foundation stage which accounted for about 15% and 74% of total settlement, respectively. In order to reduce the impact of shield cutting pile construction on the settlement of upper composite foundation, it was recommended to take measures such as optimization of shield construction parameters, radial grouting reinforcement and "clay shock" grouting within the disturbance range of shield cutting pile construction. Before pile cutting, the pile-soil stress ratio n of composite foundation was 2.437. After the shield cut pile is completed, the soil around the lining structure is gradually consolidated and reshaped, and residual pile composite foundation reaches a new state of force balance. This was because the condensation of grouting layer could increase the resistance of remaining pile end and friction resistance of the side of the pile.
Cone penetration was analyzed by arbitrary Lagangian-Eulerian(ALE) method. In order to simulate full penetration, steady state analyses were performed using ABAQUS/Explicit, which models upward flow of soil layers. In the analysis of homogeneous layer it was found that the paths and the strain of soil particles were consistent with the result of the strain path method and that the ultimate resistance were reasonably evaluated. The cone penetration through different soil layers was also analyzed and that showed the transfer of cone resistance. The steady state ALE analysis could perform full penetration through the layered soils.
