The deterministic analysis method has generally used to evaluate the slope stability and it evaluates the slope stability with decision value that is a representative value of design variables. However, one of disadvantages in the deterministic approach is there is not able to consider the uncertainty of soil strength properties, even though it is the biggest influential parameter of the slope stability. On the other hand, the limit state design(LSD) can take a consideration of uncertainties and computes both the reliability index and the probability of failure. LSD method is capable of overcoming the disadvantages of deterministic method and evaluating the slope stability more reliably. In this study, both the mean value and standard deviation of the internal land's representative soil strength properties applied to process the LSD method. The major purpose of this study is to gauge the general applicability of the limit state design in soil slope and to weigh the comparative validity of the proposed partial safety factor. In order to reach the aim of this study, the partial safety factor and resistance factor which totally satisfied the slope's overall safety factor were calculated by the load and resistance safety factor design (LRFD).
The challenges involved with fatigue damage assessment of steel catenary riser (SCR) in the touchdown zone (TDZ) are primarily due to the non-linear behaviour of the SCR-seabed interaction, considerable uncertainty in SCR-seabed interaction modelling and geotechnical parameters. The issue of fatigue damage induced by the cyclic movements of the SCR with the seabed has acquired prominence with the touch down point (TDP) interaction in the TDZ. Therefore, the SCR-seabed response is critical for reliable estimation of fatigue life in the TDZ. Various design approaches pertaining to the lateral pipe-soil resistance model are discussed. These techniques have been applied in the finite element model that can be used to analyse the lateral SCR-seabed interaction under hydrodynamic loading. This study investigates the sensitivity of fatigue performance to geotechnical parameters through a parametric study. In this study, global analyses are performed to assess the influence of vertical linear seabed springs, the lateral seabed model and the non-linear seabed model, including trench evolution into seabed, seabed normalised stiffness, re-penetration offset parameter and soil suction resistance ratio, on the fatigue life of SCRs in the TDZ.
For an equivalent uniform soil model to multiple-layered soil structure, ground depth, which is used in the calculation of equivalent resistivity, should be varied according to the size of grounding area. In case of 150 kV substation grounding design, 15 m of ground depth has been used and 25 m for 345 kV, But applying these ground depths can lead to errors in grounding resistance calculation, and these errors are coming from the poor representation of those depths to real soil resistivities. In this paper, the soil resistivity measurement techniques by Wenner method and grounding resistance calculation results by computer simulation were presented. Case studies contain the area from 3,000 to $30,000\;m^2$ and measuring space from of m to $100{\sim}250\;m$, Based of the computation results, 50 m, 60 m and 80 m of ground depth for less than 30, 40 and 70 m of equivalent hemispherical radius were proposed respectively.
A dynamic elastic local buckling analysis is presented for a pile subjected to an axial impact load. The pile is assumed to be geometrically perfect. The interactions between the pile and the surrounding soil are taken into account. The interactions include the normal pressure and skin friction on the surface of the pile due to the resistance of the soil. The analysis also includes the influence of the propagation of stress waves through the length of the pile to the distance at which buckling is initiated and the mass of the pile. A perturbation technique is used to determine the critical buckling length and the associated critical time. As a special case, the explicit expression for the buckling length of a pile is obtained without considering soil resistance and compared with the one obtained for a column by means of an alternative method. Numerical results obtained show good agreement with the experimental results. The effects of the normal pressure and the skin friction due to the surrounding soil, self-weight, stiffness and geometric dimension of the cross section on the critical buckling length are discussed. The sudden change of buckling modes is further considered to show the 'snap-through' phenomenon occurring as a result of stress wave propagation.

In this study, a CPT-based p-y analysis method was proposed for the displacement analysis of laterally loaded piles. Key consideration was the continuous soil profiling capability of CPT and cone resistance profiles that do not require artificial assumption or simplification for input parameter selection. The focus is on the application into offshore mono-piles embedded in clays. The correlations of p-y function components to the effective cone resistance were proposed, which can fully utilize CPT measurements. A case example was selected from the literature and used to validate the proposed method. Various parametric studies were performed to examine the effectiveness of the proposed method and investigate the effect of property profile and its depth resolution on the p-y analysis. It was found that the calculation could be largely misleading if wrongly interpreted sub-layer condition or inappropriate resolution of input soil profile was involved in the analyses. It was also found that there is a significant influence depth that dominates overall load response of pile. The soil profile and properties within this depth range affect most significantly calculated load responses, confirming that the soil profile within this depth range should be identified in more detail.

A moored floating structure may exhibit resonant motion responses to low-frequency excitations. Similar to the resonant responses of many vibration systems, the motion amplitude of a moored floating structure is significantly affected by the damping of the entire system. In such cases, the damping contributed by the mooring lines sometimes accounts for as much as 80% of the total damping. While the damping induced by catenary mooring lines is well-investigated, few studies have been conducted on the damping induced by taut mooring lines, especially one partly embedded in soil. The present study develops a simple but accurate model for estimating the damping contributed by mooring lines. A typical type of taut mooring line was used as the reference and the hydrodynamic drag force and soil resistance were taken into consideration. The proposed model was validated by comparing its predictions with those of a previously developed model and experimental measurements obtained by a physical model. Case studies and sensitivity studies were also conducted using the validated model. The damping induced by the soil resistance was found to be considerably smaller than the hydrodynamic damping. The superposition of the wave frequency motion on the low-frequency motion was also observed to significantly amplify the damping induced by the mooring lines.
The load distribution and deflection of offshore piles are investigated by lateral load-transfer curve method (p-y curve). Special attention is given to the soil-pile interaction and soil resistance of 3D wedge failure mode. A framework for determining a hyperbolic p-y curve is proposed based on theoretical analysis and experimental load test results. The methods for determining appropriate material parameters needed for constructing the proposed p-y curves are presented in this paper. Through comparisons with field case studies, it was found that the proposed method in the present study estimates reasonably the load transfer behavior of pile, and thus, the computed pile responses, such as bending moment and lateral displacement, agree well with the actual measured responses.
This paper represents a comparative study in which Gene Expression Programming (GEP), Group Method of Data Handling (GMDH), and multiple linear regressions (MLR) were utilized to derive new equations for the prediction of time-dependent bearing capacity of pile foundations driven in cohesive soil, technically called pile set-up. This term means that many piles which are installed in cohesive soil experience a noticeable increase in bearing capacity after a specific time. Results of researches indicate that side resistance encounters more increase than toe resistance. The main reason leading to pile setup in saturated soil has been found to be the dissipation of excess pore water pressure generated in the process of pile installation, while in unsaturated conditions aging is the major justification. In this study, a comprehensive dataset containing information about 169 test piles was obtained from literature reviews used to develop the models. to prepare the data for further developments using intelligent algorithms, Data mining techniques were performed as a fundamental stage of the study. To verify the models, the data were randomly divided into training and testing datasets. The most striking difference between this study and the previous researches is that the dataset used in this study includes different piles driven in soil with varied geotechnical characterization; therefore, the proposed equations are more generalizable. According to the evaluation criteria, GEP was found to be the most effective method to predict set-up among the other approaches developed earlier for the pertinent research.

Certain beneficial microorganisms isolated from rhizosphere soil promote plant growth and induce resistance to a wide variety of plant pathogens. We obtained 49 fungal isolates from the rhizosphere soil of paprika plants, and selected 18 of these isolates that did not inhibit tomato seed germination for further investigation. Based on a seed germination assay, we selected four isolates for further plant tests. Treatment of seeds with isolate JF27 promoted plant growth in pot tests, and suppressed bacterial speck disease caused by Pseudomonas syringae pathovar (pv.) tomato DC3000. Furthermore, expression of the pathogenesis-related 1 (PR1) gene was higher in the leaves of tomato plants grown from seeds treated with JF27; expression remained at a consistently higher level than in the control plants for 12 h after pathogen infection. The phylogenetic analysis of a partial internal transcribed spacer sequence and the b-tubulin gene identified isolate JF27 as Aspergillus terreus. Taken together, these results suggest that A. terreus JF27 has potential as a growth promoter and could be used to control bacterial speck disease by inducing resistance in tomato plants.
The magnitude of the lateral resistance that resists the lateral movement of the pile is controlled by the amount of the pile movement and the strength and stiffness of soil. In this paper, we proposed an equation which produces the lateral resistance of the laterally loaded single pile using the strain wedge model of the soil deformation. The results of this equation is compared with results of model test, field test, p-y curve and other methods. It is found that the result of proposed equation is smaller than the result of model test. The results of loading test considerably coincide with those of proposed equation; however, a few of deviations are generated as the displacement of pile head increases. Moreover, coincidences exist between the results of the proposed equation and those of finite difference method.
