In this study, Liquefaction characteristics of saturated sand under various dynamic loadings such as sinusoidal loading, increasing wedge loading, and real earthquake loading were investigated focusing on the dissipated energy. From the results of cyclic triaxial test, liquefaction resistance strength was calculated by the concept of energy according to the type of input loading. Liquefaction resistance strength was expressed in accumulated dissipated energy calculated from stress-strain curve(hysteresis loop). The dissipated energy according to loading type was compared and the energy-based evaluation was proposed. The procedures are presented in terms of normalized energy demand(NED), normalized energy capacity(NEC), and factor of safely, where NED is the load imparted to the soil by the loading(both amplitude and duration), NEC is the demand required to induce liquefaction, and factor of safely is defined as the ratio of NEC and NED.
In the preceding study, the possibility of liquefaction according to the liquefaction evaluation methods was predicted in Saemangeum reclamation area for tide embankment, Jeollabuk-do, Korea. The risk of liquefaction was also expected when foundations and underground structures were built at a depth within 10m below ground surface, and meticulous care was required in the design of them in the future. This study considered the effect of the embedded depth for foundation design regarding liquefaction based on the various earthquake data from literatures. On the basis of the results of this study, an alternative consideration in foundation design for liquefaction was proposed for the Saemangeum area.
One of the significant problems in the design of onshore pipelines in seismic areas is their stability in case of liquefaction. Several model tests and numerical analyses allow investigating the behavior of pipelines when the phenomenon of liquefaction occurs. While experimental tests contribute significantly toward understanding the liquefaction mechanism, they are costly to perform compared to numerical analyses; on the other hand, numerical analyses are difficult to execute, because of the complexity of the soil behavior in case of liquefaction. This paper reports an overview of the existing computational methods to evaluate the stability of onshore pipelines in liquefied soils, with particular attention to the development of excess pore water pressures and the floatation of buried structures. The review includes the illustration of the mechanism of floating and the description of the available calculation methods that are classified in static and dynamic approaches. We also highlighted recent trends in numerical analyses. Moreover, for the static condition, referring to the American Petroleum Institute (API) Specification, we computed and compared the uplift safety factors in different cases that might have a relevant practical use.
The cyclic triaxial test was carried out to research liquefaction characteristics and sample disturbance effects of silty sand soils at the west coast in Korea. First, liquefaction in silty sand was generated when axial strain approached to $\pm10%$ of strain and behavior of pore pressure was similar to the formula suggested by Seed, Martin, and Lysmer(1975). Also, it was found that dilatancy was generated at failure. Secondly, the liquefaction evaluation methods suggested by many researchers were carried out and the results were compared. In these methods the weak depth in liquefaction was similar and the method carried out by cyclic triaxial test on remolded sample showed the least safety factor. Thirdly the stress ratio by cyclic triaxial test was compared with that obtained from SPT N-value as a kind of empirical methods. It was found that the effect of sample disturbance was relatively small when SPT N-value was less than 20, but there were large differences in safety factor and resistance of liquefaction in soil by the effects of disturbance and remolding when SPT N-value was more than 20.
The sands which use for soil improvement of soft ground at coastal area contain more or less amount of shells. In this research the effects of shell contents on the liquefaction resistance of the shelly sand were studied. NGI cyclic simple shear tests were performed for the shell-sands with shell contents of 0%, 5%, 10%, 20%, 30% under the effective vertical stress of 50kPa, 100kPa and 150kPa for 40% and 55% of relative density, respectively. Cyclic simple shear test results showed that for the low effective vertical stress, the liquefaction resistance increased rapidly with increase of shell contents in both 40% and 55% relative density. On the other hand, for the high effective vertical stress, the liquefaction resistance increased slightly in 40% relative density and was almost same in 55% relative density. Liquefaction resistance decreased with increasing effective vertical stress for both 40% and 55% relative density. In the same effective vertical stress and shell contents, liquefaction resistance increased with the increase of relative density.
The liquefaction phenomenon that occurred during the Pohang earthquake (ML=5.4) brought new awareness to the people about the risk of liquefaction caused by the earthquake. Liquefaction hazard maps with 2 km grid made in 2014 used more than 100,000 borehole data for the whole country, and regions without soil investigation data were produced using interpolation. In the mapping of macro liquefaction hazard for the whole country, the site amplification effect and the ground water level 0 m were considered. Recently, the Ministry of Public Administration and Security (2018) published a new site classification method and amplification coefficient of the common standard for seismic design. Therefore, it is necessary to rewrite the liquefaction hazard map reflecting the revised amplification coefficient. In this study, the results of site classification according to the average shear wave velocity in soils before and after revision were compared in the whole country. Also, liquefaction assessment results were compared in Gangseo-gu, Busan. At this time, two ground accelerations corresponding to the 500 and 1,000 years of return period and two ground water table, 5 m for the average condition and 0 m the extreme condition were applied. In the drawing of liquefaction hazard map, a 500 m grid was applied to secure a resolution higher than the previous 2 km grid. As a result, the ground conditions that were classified as SC and SD grounds based on the existing site classification standard were reclassified as S2, S3, and S4 through the revised site classification standard. Also, the result of the Liquefaction assessments with a return period of 500 years and 1,000 years resulted in a relatively overestimation of the LPI applied with the ground amplification factor before revision. And the results of this study have a great influence on the liquefaction assessment, which is the basis of the creation of the regional liquefaction hazard map using the amplification factor.
One of the important causes of building and infrastructure failure, such as bridges on pile foundations, is the placement of the piles in liquefiable soil that can become unstable under seismic loads. Therefore, the overarching aim of this study is to investigate the seismic behavior of a soil-pile system in liquefiable soil using three-dimensional numerical FEM analysis, including soil-pile interaction. Effective parameters on concrete pile response, involving the pile diameter, pile length, soil type, and base acceleration, were considered in the framework of finite element non-linear dynamic analysis. The constitutive model of soil was considered as elasto-plastic kinematic-isotropic hardening. First, the finite element model was verified by comparing the variations on the pile response with the measured data from the centrifuge tests, and there was a strong agreement between the numerical and experimental results. Totally 64 non-linear time-history analyses were conducted, and the responses were investigated in terms of the lateral displacement of the pile, the effect of the base acceleration in the pile behavior, the bending moment distribution in the pile body, and the pore pressure. The numerical analysis results demonstrated that the relationship between the pile lateral displacement and the maximum base acceleration is non-linear. Furthermore, increasing the pile diameter results in an increase in the passive pressure of the soil. Also, piles with small and big diameters are subjected to yielding under bending and shear states, respectively. It is concluded that an effective stress-based ground response analysis should be conducted when there is a liquefaction condition in order to determine the maximum bending moment and shear force generated within the pile.

A liquefaction is one of the phenomena bring about the damage of many human lives and properties in a short time, when an earthquakes is occurred. Because the foundation becomes such condition as suspension, the structures slant or collapse in a moment. This study is to provide and classify the geological map, soil map, drainage network map and underground water level data, and to evaluate the possibility area of liquefaction with the experienced method and the earthquake-proof regulations of Korea by applying Geo-spatial Information System(GSIS).
In this study, a model parameter evaluation method using relative density was proposed to utilize applicable UBC3D-PLM for liquefaction behavior. In addition, dynamic effective stress analysis, that is, liquefaction analysis, was performed on the case of the liquefaction occurrence region where acceleration and pore water pressure were measured, and compared with the actual measurement and the existing Finn analysis results. Through this study, it was found that the proposed method can easily evaluate the necessary parameters required by the related model and predict the pore water pressure behavior in the region where liquefaction occurs. In addition, in the case of the study area, both measurements and numerical analysis showed that liquefaction occurred when a certain amount of time elapsed after the earthquake acceleration reached the maximum value. In the case of UBC3D-PLM applied in this study, the excess pore water pressure behavior similar to the actual measurement was predicted, and the occurrence of liquefaction was evaluated in the same way as the actual measurement. In particular, although the excess pore water pressure in the sand layer was greater, the phenomenon in which liquefaction occurred in the silt layer was accurately realized. It is expected that the proposed model parameter evaluation method and finite element analysis applying UBC3D-PLM can be used to select the liquefaction reinforcement region in the future seismic design and reinforcement by evaluating the liquefaction occurrence region similarly to the real one.
Soil liquefaction occurs by complex dynamic interaction between soil particles and pore fluid. Therefore, experimental researches have been widely performed to analyze liquefaction phenomena. In this research, centrifuge tests were performed to analyze the liquefaction behavior of horizontal sand ground. Centrifugal acceleration was 40g and the thickness of model ground was 25cm, which simulates 10m thickness in prototype scale. Viscous fluid was used as pore fluid to remove the time scaling difference between dissipation and dynamic shaking. Test results showed that the dissipation of excess pore pressure is the combined behavior of solidification and consolidation. In addition, the solidification rate, the ground acceleration amplitude, and the dynamic permeability during solidification were influenced by the confining pressure.
