Occurrence and soil fumigation effect on black root rot of peony was investigated. Peony was severely infected to black root rot caused by Cylindrocarpon destructans in continuous cropping field, but in first cropping field was less infected. To control black root rot, soil improvement, soil fumigation and the root dipping in chemicals were trialed in peony continuous cropping field. Black root rot was not decreased by soil improvement, but incidence of black root rot of peony cultivated in continuous croping field of peony was decreased by soil fumigation with Dazomet GR. and dipping of peony root in chemicals.

To suggest the fundamental data for development of the soil improvement method which increases the permeability in aquifer by jet water, laboratory tests were performed. The results obtained are as follows : 1. The diameter of the improved section was maximum value when the time of water jetting was about 4 minutes, and it was not increased according as the time of water jetting was longer than 4 minutes. 2. It appeared that 2.78 mm in diameter of the nozzle was the most optimum size in the condition of using the 1/8 HP - pump and the diameter of improved section in that case was 15.9cm 3. According to removing fine - soil particles, the original soil was improved, suitable to the purpose of improving, and then the permeability of the improved soil was 100 times of that of the original soil. 4. As the improved soil was satisfied to the design criteria of filter materials, the improvement method in this study will be useful for constructing underground collecting channels or underground collecting drainage canals.
Deteriorating soil physical properties and increasing soil pathogens due to the continuous cultivation of field crops are the leading causes of productivity deterioration. Crop rotation, soil heat treatment, and chemical control are used as pest control methods; however, each has limitations in wide application to domestic agriculture. In particular, chemical control requires improvement due to direct exposure to sterilizing solution, odor, and high-intensity work. To improve the overall domestic agricultural environment, the problems of time and cost, such as field maintenance and cultivation scale, must be addressed; therefore, mechanization technology for chemical control must be secured to derive improvement effects in a short period. Most related studies are focused on the control effect of the DMDS (dimethyl disulfide) sterilizer, and research on the performance of the sterilization spray device has been conducted after its introduction in Korea, but research on the corrosion suitability of the material is lacking. This study conducted a corrosion test to secure the corrosion resistance of a soil sterilizer injection pump, and a mechanical failure mode by corrosion by the material was established. The corrosion test comprised operation and neglect tests in which the sterilizing solution was circulated in the pump and remained in the pump, respectively. As a result of the corrosion test, damage occurred due to the weakening of the mechanical strength of the graphite material, and corrosion resistance to aluminum, stainless steel, fluororubber, and PPS (polyphenylene sulfide) materials was confirmed.

One of the issues with clayey soils, particularly those with significant quantities of organic matter, is the creep settling problem. Clay soils can be strengthened using a variety of techniques, one of which is the use of stone columns. Prior research involved foundation loading when the soil beds were ready and confined in one-dimensional consolidation chambers. In this study, a particular methodology is used to get around the model's frictional resistance issue. Initially, specimens were prepared via static compaction, and they were then re-consolidated inside a sizable triaxial cell while under isotropic pressure. With this configuration, the confining pressure can be adjusted, the pore water pressure beneath the foundation can be measured, and the spacemen's lateral border may be freely moved. This paper's important conclusions include the observation that secondary settlement declines with area replacement ratio. Because of the composite ground's increasing stiffness, the length to diameter ratio (l/d) and the stone column to sample height ratio (Hc/Hs) both increase. The degree of improvement varies from 12.4 to 55% according to area replacement ratio and (l/d) ratio.
Research was focused on the improvement of poor drainage problems on golf course fairway which had not been performed soil test or properly amended during the course construction. The analysis of the drainage problem basically was caused by a deterioration of soil physical properties by the top layer compaction. The soil hardness reached about 3,000 Kpa around 5~6 cm of soil profile. The slow infiltration speed to subsoil by the compaction was caused directly a poor drainage capacity. However, the properly amended sand soil showed an apparent value of 1,500 Kpa through the subsoil. The water content test showed a similar result that higher rate of 20~30% and ideal rate of 8~12% at poor drainage area and successfully amended area, respectively. However, an imported topsoil media which had higher content of silt and clay from a trans-planted sod had made a heterogeneous soil profile and that caused a poor drain capacity by a low infiltration rate. Those drainage problems triggered to buildup a reduced soil layer by poor soil gas exchange. The soil environment of deoxidation enhanced anaerobic microbial population and induced methane gas build-up to 55 ppm, and that resulted an adverse effect on turf growth by root growth retardation, consequently.
To evaluate the effect of soil improvement on the chemical properties and corn silage yield, this experiment was carried out in the newly-reclaimed sloped land. Corn (Suwon 19) was cultivated under the six different treatments including integrated improvement plot at Songjeong loam, 20 percent slope, from 1985 to 1987 and various soil chemical properties and silage yield were investigated. pH of topsoil was above 5.0 except for control and phosphate plot, but lime and integrated improvement plots were above 5.0 in subsoil. The contents of organic matter of topsoil were above 2.0% except control and subsoiling plot. Except control, the range of cation exchange capacity was 7.4-7.8 me/100g in topsoil, 7.0-7.7 me/100g in subsoil. Soil bacteria density of root zone was the highest in integrated improvement than the other treatments, and it was higher at the harvesting stage than the heading stage. Mean density of microorganism was $61.3{\times}10^5$ in bacteria, $21.5{\times}10^4$ in fungi and actinomycetes was B/F ratio was 28.5 and B/A ratio was 2.9. Vertical root distribution of total and 10cm depth below was more in the integrated improvement and subsoi ling plot than the other plots. Total nitrogen (T-N) content was higher in integrated improvement plot, and phosphate content of leaves was higher in compost and integrated improvement plot, but stem and grain were not different. Potassium content of the plant was higher in integra ted improvement plot. Correlation between dry matter yield and T-N was more significant than the other elements. And the contents of phosphate, calcium and magnesium were significant at 5%, but potassium was not.
This research was carried out to find the suitable improvement ways of the potential acid sulfate soil(PASS) for rice cultivation through the physical applications such as surface drainage. drainage. soil dressing with common paddy soil, and burial of PASS. In reclamation of PASS the practices of surface drainage and drainage were not effective, but soil dressing with common paddy soil with same ratio and covering with common paddy soil in 30cm deep were effective for rice cultivation without growth injury. Daily drainage practice was most effective for physical reclamation of PASS.
This study was carried out to investigate the incorporation effect of green manure crops (GMC) such as the hairy vetch on improvement of soil environment in reclaimed land during silage corn cultivation over the past two years. Plots consisted of conventional fertilization (CF) and incorporation of GMC were divided by addition rate of nitrogen fertilizer (100 kg $ha^{-1}$) with 30 - 100% of non nitrogen fertilization (NNF). Soil physico-chemical properties and growth and yield potential of silage corn were examined. The tested soils showed strong alkali and saline properties with low contents of organic matter and available phosphate while contents of exchangeable sodium and magnesium were high. Soil salinity increased during cultivation of summer crop. However, corn was not affected by salt content. The fresh weight of GMC at incorporation time was 18,345 kg $ha^{-1}$. Content of total nitrogen was 3.09% and the C/N ratio was 12.8 at incorporation time. Fresh and dry matter yield of silage corn were higher in the order of N30% reduction, CF, N50% reduction, N70% reduction, N100% reduction and NNF. Fresh and dry matter yield potential of silage corn for N30% reduction were comparable to those of CF. Bulk density of the soil decreased with incorporation of GMC, while porosity was increased. The soil pH decreased while content of exchangeable calcium, available phosphate, and organic matter increased. Also contents of exchangeable sodium and potassium decreased with incorporation of GMC. The data indicate that incorporation of hairy vetch can improve soil physical and chemical properties and reduce nitrogen fertilizer application especially for alkali saline reclaimed soil such as Saemangeum reclaimed land.
This experiment was carried out to investigate the effect of improved NPK fertilizer and ameliorator application methods on job's tears yield and soil properties in the newly-reclaimed land from 1985 through 1988. Job's tears height of integrated improvement plot was higher than the other plots, and increased from the 1st and the 2nd year, but decreased from the 3rd year when soil conditioner was not applied. Average yield of the crop in the integrated improvement plot was 2.16 t /ha being increased by 49% more than the control plot, and the yield was the greatest in order of integrated improvement>subsoiling>phosphate>lime>compost>control plot. Soil bulk density and hardness of the topsoil decreased to the 3rd year, but increased in the 4th year. Soil pH of the topsoil was not changed significantly by different soil depths and cultivated years.
Soil erosion can cause scouring and failures of underwater structures, therefore, various soil improvement techniques are used to increase the soil erosion resistance. The microbially induced calcium carbonate precipitation (MICP) method is proposed to increase the erosion resistance, however, there are only limited experimental and numerical studies on the use of MICP treatment for improvement of surface erosion resistance. Therefore, this study investigates the improvement in surface erosion resistance of sands by MICP through laboratory experiments and numerical modeling. The surface erosion behaviors of coarse sands with various calcium carbonate contents were first investigated via the erosion function apparatus (EFA). The test results showed that MICP treatment increased the overall erosion resistance, and the contribution of the precipitated calcium carbonate to the erosion resistance and critical shear stress was quantified in relation to the calcium carbonate contents. Further, these surface erosion processes occurring in the EFA test were simulated through the coupled computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and discrete element method (DEM) with the cohesion bonding model to reflect the mineral precipitation effect. The simulation results were compared with the experimental results, and the developed CFD-DEM model with the cohesion bonding model well predicted the critical shear stress of MICP-treated sand. This work demonstrates that the MICP treatment is effective in improving soil erosion resistance, and the coupled CFD-DEM with a bonding model is a useful and promising tool to analyze the soil erosion behavior for MICP-treated sand at a particle scale.
