Ground source heat pump system can achieve high efficiency of performance by utilizing annually constant underground temperature to provide heat source for space heating and cooling. Generally, the depth of constant-temperature zone under the ground depends on surface heat flux and soil properties. The deeper the ground heat exchanger is installed, the higher the heat exchange rate can be acquired. However, in order to optimally design the system, it is necessary to consider both the installation cost and the system performance. In this study, performance analysis of ground source heat pump system according to the depth has been conducted through the case study.
This study was conducted to investigate the influences of sapflow flux on soil water tensions and soil moisture content at the Abies holophylla plots in Gwangneung, Gyeonggido, from September to October 2004. The Abies holophylla had been planted in 1976 and thinning and pruning were carried out in 1996 and 2004. Sapflow flux was measured by the heat pulse method, and soil water tension was measured by tensiometer at hillslope and streamside. Time domain reflectometry probes (TDR) were positioned horizontally at the depth of 10, 30 and 50 cm to measure soil moisture content. All of data were recorded every 30 minutes with the dataloggers. The sapflow flux responded sensitively to rainfall, so little sapflow was detected in rainy days. The average daily sapflow flux of sample trees was 10.16l, a maximum was 15.09l, and a minimum was 0.0l. The sapflow flux's diurnal changes showed that sapflow flux increased from 9 am and up to 0.74 l/30 min. The highest sapflow flux maintained by 3 pm and decreased almost 0.0 l/30 mm after 7 pm. The average soil water tensions were low ($-141.3cmH_2O$, $-52.9cmH_2O$ and $-134.2cmH_2O$) at hillslope and high ($-6.1cmH_2O$, $-18.0cmH_2O$ and $-3.7cmH_2O$) at streamside. When the soil moisture content decreased after rainfall, the soil water tension at hillslope responded sensitively to the sapflow flux. The soil water tension decreased as the sapflow flux increased during the day time, whereas increased during the night time when the sapflow flux was not detected. On the other hand, there was no significant relationship between soil water tension and sapflow flux at streamside. Soil moisture content at hillslope decreased continuously after rain, and showed a negative correlation to sapflow flux like a soil water tension at hillslope. As considered results above, it was confirmed that the response of soil moisture tension to sapflow flux at hillslope and streamside were different.
Remote Sensing data with ancillary ground-based meteorological data provides the capalility of computing threeof the four surface energy balance components(i.e. net radiation, soil heat flux and sensible heat flux) at different spatial and temporal scales. As a result, this enablis the estimation of the remaining term, latent heat flux. One of the practical applications with this approach is to produce evapotranspiration maps over large areas. This results could estimate and reproduce areal evapotranspiration over large area as much as several hundred sequare kilometers. Moreover, some calculating simulations for the effects of the land use change on the surface heat flux has been made by this method, which is able to estimate evapotranspiration under arbitracy presumed condition. From the simulation of land use change, the results suggests that the land use change in study area can be produce the significant changes in surface heat flux. This preliminary research suggests that the future research should involve development of methods to account for the variability of meteorological parameters brought about by changes in surface conditions and improvements in the modeling of sensible heat transfer across the surface atmosphere interface for partical canopy conditions using remote sensing information.

Based on in-situ monitoring data produced by National Institute of Meteorological Sciences, we evaluated the performance of Joint UK Land Environment Simulator (JULES) on the surface energy balance for rice-paddy and cropland in Korea with the operational ancillary data used for Unified Model (UM) Local Data Assimilation and Prediction System (LDAPS) (CTL) and the high-resolution ancillary data from external sources (EXP). For these experiments, we employed the one-year (March 2015~February 2016) observations of eddy-covariance fluxes and soil moisture contents from a double-cropping rice-paddy in BoSeong and a cropland in AnDong. On the rice-paddy site the model performed better in the CTL experiment except for the sensible heat flux, and the latent heat flux was underestimated in both of experiments which can be inferred that the model represents flood-irrigated surface poorly. On the cropland site the model performance of the EXP experiment was worse than that of CTL experiment related to unrealistic surface type fractions. The pattern of the modeled soil moisture was similar to the observation but more variable in time. Our results shed a light on that 1) the improvement of land scheme for the flood-irrigated rice-paddy and 2) the construction of appropriate high-resolution ancillary data should be considered in the future research.

This study was conducted to estimate the optimum temperature and required time for soil sterilization when heated water was circulated through underground heating pipes in the greenhouse which solar heat was influenced to the temperature of soil during the summer day. Two different types of heating pipes were used for the experiment. One was a polyethylene pipe(XL) and the other was a corrugated ring shaped stainless steel pipe(STS). The results of the studies were summarized as follows; By measuring the thermal characteristics of the XL and STS, it was examined that the average temperature differences of the inlet and outlet were $8.5^{\circ}C$ and $13.3^{\circ}C$, the average flowrates were 15.3 L/min and 5.6 L/min, and the average radiation powers were 9.1 kW and 4.1 kW, respectively. As results of the regression analysis of underground temperatures, when average soil temperature was$35^{\circ}C$, an average water temperature was $80^{\circ}C$, and XL was used, it was estimated that the possible heat transfer distance, the required time for heat transfer and heat flux to reach the underground temperature of $60^{\circ}C$ were 300 mm, 230 hours, and $7.57kW/m^2$, respectively.

An extreme climate monitoring is essential to the reduction of socioeconomic damages from extreme events. The objective of this study was to produce the near-realtime weekly root-zone Soil Moisture Index (SMI) on the basis of soil moisture using the Noah 3.3 Land Surface Model (LSM) for potentially monitoring extreme drought events. The Yangtze basin was selected to evaluate the Noah LSM performance for the East Asia region (15-60°N, 70-150°E) and the evapotranspiration (ET) and sensible heat flux (SH) were compared with ET and SH from FluxNet and with ET from FluxCom, Global Land Evaporation Amsterdam Model (GLEAM), ERA-5, and Generalized Complementary Relationship (GCR). For the ET, the coefficients of determination (R2) were higher than 0.96, while the R2 value for the SH was 0.71 with slightly lower than those. A time series of the weekly root-zone SMI revealed that the regions with Extreme drought had been expanded from the northern part of East China to the entire East China between July to October 2019. The trend analysis of the number of extreme drought events showed that extreme drought events in spring had reduced in South Korea over the past 20 years, while those in fall had a tendency to increase. It is concluded that this study can be useful to reduce the socioeconomic damages resulted from climate extremes by comprehensively characterizing extreme drought events.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate temperature reduction and heat budget of extensive modular green roof planted with Sedum sarmentosum and Zoysia japonica. Plant height and green coverage were measured as plant growth. Temperature, net radiation and evapotranspiration of concrete surface, green roof surface, in-soil and bottom were measured from August 2 to August 3, 2012 (48 hours). On 3 P.M., August 3, 2012, when air temperature was the highest ($34.6^{\circ}C$), concrete surface temperature was highest ($57.5^{\circ}C$), followed by surface temperature of Sedum sarmentosum ($40.1^{\circ}C$) and Zoysia japonica ($38.3^{\circ}C$), which proved temperature reduction effect of green roof. Temperature reduction effect of green roof was also shown inside green roof soil, and bottom of green roof. It was found that Zoysia japonica was more effective in temperature reduction than Sedum sarmentosum. Compared with the case of concrete surface, the highest temperature of green roof surface was observed approximately 2 hours delayed. Plant species, temperature and soil moisture were found to have impact on surface temperature reduction. Plant species, air temperature, soil moisture and green roof surface temperature were found to have impact on temperature reduction in green roof bottom. As results of heat budget analysis, sensible heat was highest on concrete surface and was found to be reduced by green roof. Latent heat flux of Zoysia japonica was higher than that of Sedum sarmentosum, which implied that Zoysia japonica was more effective to improve thermal environment for green roof than Sedum sarmentosum.
The exact estimation of crop evapotranspiration containing reference or potential evapotranspiration is necessary for decision of crop water requirements. This study was carried out for the evaluation and application of various meteorological elements used for the calculation of reference evapotranspiration (RET) by FAO Penman-Monteith (PM) model. Meteorological elements including temperature, net radiation, soil heat flux, albedo, relative humidity, wind speed measured by meteorological instruments are required for RET calculation by FAO PM model. The average of albedo measured for crop growing period was 0.20, ranging from 0.12 to 0.23, and was slightly lower than 0.23. Determinant coefficients by measured albedo and green grass albedo were 0.97, 0.95 and standard errors were 0.74, 0.80 respectively. Usefulness of deductive regression models was admitted. To assess an influence of soil heat flux (G) on FAO PM, RET with G=0 was compared with RETs using G at 5cm soil depth ($G_{5cm}$) and G at surface ($G_{0cm}$). As the results, RET estimated by G=0 was well agreed with RET calculated by measured G. Therefore, estimated net radiation, G=0 and albedo of green grass could be used for RET calculation by FAO PM.
This study investigated the effect of parked cars in the sunshine on the increase of air temperature on a sunny day. Air temperatures were determined both from inside of the parked cars and the top surface of the vehicle at which one car was parked under the sunshine and the other in the shade for the duration of 27 hours. The surface temperatures of asphalt and bare soil were simultaneously measured in both locations, sunshine and shade areas, along with a couple of meteorological factors. The sensible heat fluxes from the surfaces of asphalt, bare soil and two vehicles were estimated by utilizing those observed data. The results are as follows; 1) The surface temperatures of bare soil, asphalt and two vehicles increased with $30{\sim}37^{\circ}C,\;37{\sim}46^{\circ}C\;and\;42{\sim}49^{\circ}C$ respectively during the day. 2) The sensible heat fluxes were noticeably higher from the top surface of the parked vehicle in the sunshine than from the asphalt or bare soil. The differences of sensible heat fluxes between the vehicle's roof and the other two surfaces of asphalt and bare soil were 60 (asphalt) and 85 (bare soil) $W/m^2$ during the daytime.
According to the 4th and 5th assessment of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), global climate has been rapidly changing because of the human activities since Industrial Revolution. The perceived changes were appeared strongly in temperature and concentration of carbon dioxide ($CO_2$). Global average temperature has increased about $0.74^{\circ}C$ over last 100 years (IPCC, 2007) and concentration of $CO_2$ is unprecedented in at least the last 800,000 years (IPCC, 2014). These phenomena influence precipitation, evapotranspiration and soil moisture which have an important role in hydrology, and that is the reason why there is a necessity to study climate change. In this study, Asia region was selected to simulate primary energy index from 1951 to 2100. To predict future climate change effect, Common Land Model (CLM) which is used for various fields across the world was employed. The forcing data was Representative Concentration Pathway (RCP) data which is the newest greenhouse gas emission scenario published in IPCC 5th assessment. Validation of net radiation ($R_n$), sensible heat flux (H), latent heat flux (LE) for historical period was performed with 5 flux tower site-data in the region of AsiaFlux and the monthly trends of simulation results were almost equaled to observation data. The simulation results for 2006-2100 showed almost stable net radiation, slightly decreasing sensible heat flux and quite increasing latent heat flux. Especially the uptrend for RCP 8.5 has been about doubled compared to RCP 4.5 and since late 2060s, variations of net radiation and sensible heat flux would be significantly risen becoming an extreme climate condition. In a follow-up study, a simulation for energy index and hydrological index under the detailed condition will be conducted with various scenario established from this study.
