An analytical method was developed to determine monocrotophos residues in apple, citrus, and soil using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) with ultraviolet absorption detection. Monocrotophos was extracted with acetone from apple, citrus and moist soil samples. The extract was concentrated, added with saline water, and subjected to n-hexane washing to remove nonpolar co-extractives. Dichloromethane partition was then followed to recover monocrotophos from the aqueous phase. Silica gel column chromatography was employed to further purify the extract prior to HPLC determination. Reverse-phase HPLC using an oct-adecylsilyl column was successfully applied to separate and quantitate the monocrotophos residue in sample extracts at the wavelength of 230 nm. Overall recoveries of monocrotophos from fortified samples averaged $95.3{\pm}2.1%$ (n=6), $970{\pm}0.7%$ (n=6), and $92.8{\pm}4.3%$ (n=12) for apple, citrus, and soil, respectively. The proposed method was quite reproducible and sensitive enough to replace the troublesome gas-liquid chromatographic analysis for monocrotophos residues.
The objective of this study was to determine the feasibility of recycled phosphogypsum (PG) as an embankment material with soil by performing batch and column ecotoxicity experiments. A. salina, D. magna, O. latipes and S. capricornutum were selected for the experiment. The effective concentration (EC50) of D. magna was the lowest value, 1.29 mg/L. The survival rates of A. salina, D. magna and O. latipes were more than 90% in the presence of PG leachate in the column test. The toxicity unit (TU) for the organisms was less than 1, indicating that no significant ecotoxicity effect was found. These findings suggested that PG could be recycled for use as an embankment and landfill material with soil.
An analytical method was developed to determine tricyclazole residues in rice grain, straw, and soil using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) with ultraviolet absorption detection. Tricyclazole was extracted with methanol from moist rice grain, straw, and soil samples. n-Hexane washing was employed to remove nonpolar co-extractives during liquid-liquid partition. Tricyclazole was then extracted with dichloromethane from alkaline aqueous phase, while acidic interferences remained in the phase. Dichloromethane extract was further purified by silica gel column chromatography prior to HPLC determination. Reverse-phase HPLC using an octadecylsilyl column was successfully applied to separate and quantitate the tricyclazole residue in sample extracts monitored at ${\lambda}_{max}$ 225nm. Recoveries from fortified samples averaged $95.5{\pm}3.0%\;(n=6),\;87.5{\pm}20.%\;(n=6),\;and\;84.3{\pm}2.8%$ (n=12) for rice grain, straw, and soil, respectively. Detection limit of the method was 0.02 mg/kg for rice grain and soil samples while 0.05 mg/kg for rice straw samples. The proposed method was reproducible and sensitive enough to evaluate the safety of tricyclazole residues in rice grain, straw, and soil.
The building frame and its foundation along with the soil on which it rests, together constitute a complete structural system. In the conventional analysis, a structure is analysed as an independent frame assuming unyielding supports and the interactive response of soil-foundation is disregarded. This kind of analysis does not provide realistic behaviour and sometimes may cause failure of the structure. Also, the conventional analysis considers infill wall as non-structural elements and ignores its interaction with the bounding frame. In fact, the infill wall provides lateral stiffness and thus plays vital role in resisting the seismic forces. Thus, it is essential to consider its effect especially in case of high rise buildings. In the present research work the building frame, infill wall, isolated column footings (open foundation) and soil mass are considered to act as a single integral compatible structural unit to predict the nonlinear interaction behaviour of the composite system under seismic forces. The coupled isoparametric finite-infinite elements have been used for modelling of the interaction system. The material of the frame, infill and column footings has been assumed to follow perfectly linear elastic relationship whereas the well known hyperbolic soil model is used to account for the nonlinearity of the soil mass.
In this paper, the effect of a group of sand columns in the loose soil bed using triaxial tests was studied. To investigate the effect of geotextile reinforcement type on the bearing capacity of these sand columns, Vertical encased sand columns (VESCs) and horizontally reinforced sand columns (HRSCs) were used. Number of sixteen independent triaxial tests and finite element simulation were performed on specimens with a diameter of 100 mm and a height of 200 mm. Specimens were reinforced by either a single sand column or three sand columns with the same area replacement ratio (16%) to evaluate the Influence of the column arrangement. Effect the number of sand columns, the length of vertical encasement and the number of horizontal reinforcing layers were investigated, in terms of bearing capacity improvement and economy. The results indicated that the ultimate bearing capacity of the samples with three ordinary sand columns (OSCs) is eventually about 11% more than samples with an OSC. Also, comparison of the column reinforcing modes showed that four horizontal layers of geotextile achieved similar performance to a vertical encasement geotextile at the 50% of the column height, from the viewpoint of strength improvement, while from the viewpoint of economy, the geotextile needed for encasing the single column is around 2.5 times of the geotextile required for four layers.
Sand columns in clayey soil are considered one of the most economical and environmentally-friendly soil-improving techniques. It improves the shear strength parameters, reduces the settlement, and increases the bearing capacity of clayey soils. The aim of this paper is to study the effect of grain shape in sand columns on their performance in improving the mechanical properties of clayey soils. An intensive series of consolidated-drained triaxial tests were performed on clay specimens only and clay specimens with sand columns. The parameters examined during the experimental work were grain shape in sand columns (angular, rounded, sub-rounded) and effective confining pressure (50 kPa, 100 kPa, 200 kPa). The results indicated that there is a significant improvement in the deviatoric stress and stiffness values of specimens with sand columns. Improving deviatoric stress values in the use of angular sand grains was found to be higher than those in the use of sub-rounded and rounded sand grains. A 187%, 159%, and 153% increment in deviatoric stress values were observed for the sand columns with angular, sub-rounded, and rounded grain shapes, respectively. The specimens were observed to be more contractive as the sand column was installed, and as the angularity of grains in the sand column was increased. Sand column installation improves significantly the angle of internal friction, and the effective angle of internal friction increases as the angularity of the sand grains increases.
A model was developed to describe the microbial decontamination of diesel contaminated soil in a soil column. The biodegradation rate of diesel in nature depends on temperature and the pH of soil, availability of nutrients, oxygen and water. The soil moisture content is one of the essential factors because it characterizes the availability not only of water to microorganisms but also of oxygen and nutrient dissolved in soil. In this work, the rate of biodegradation was modeled by coupling Michaelis-Menten kinetics for the aqueous-phase solute with adsoption-desoption equation for diesel sorption and desorption from soil.

The mathematical model was proposed to simulate ozone transport and remediation in unsaturated soils contaminated with phenanthrene. Soil column experiments were also carried out to calibrate the mathematical model. The experimental results successfully matched with the modeling results in various soil conditions. The model proposed nondimensional fraction factor to reveal reactivity between phenanthrene and gas phase ozone and liquid phase ozone. From sensitivity analysis, the fraction factor and stoichiometric coefficient decreased as water content increased. Simulation results showed increased SOM content retarded the ozone transport and the phenanthrene removal due to increased ozone consumption.
In order to establish the applicability of organic soil as Earthwork Materials, this research conducts a battery of laboratory tests using two kinds of test materials. The test material A, a mixture of sand and organic soil, and the test material B, a mixture of granite soil and organic soil varying the proportion of organic soil through 5%, 10%, 20%, 30%, 40%, and 50% are used. Continuous column leaching tests of the test materials A and B indicate that their COD value is substantially smaller than that of pure organic soil, the COD value of the early leached water slightly exceeds the standard level for leached water. The COD value after 4 hours of leaching becomes very small. The mixed soil of sand and organic soil is considered usable as embankment materials when the proportion of organic soil is up to 40% with the corresponding concentration ratio of organic contents is less than 11.3%. Similarly, the mixed soil of granite soil and organic soil is considered usable as earthwork materials when the proportion of organic soil is less than 30% with the corresponding concentration ratio of organic contents is less than 16.4%.
Removal of nonaqueous phase liquid present in the soil column by using cosolvent floods was investigated. The first objective of the study was to elucidate the removal mechanism of cosolvent flooding for benzene-NAPL. The second objective of the study was to evaluate the effects of the alchohol partitioning type (NAPL swelling and non-swelling) and concentration on NAPL removal efficiency from the soil column. The main NAPL removal mechanism of swelling alcohol was mobilization, while that of non-swelling alcohol was NAPL dissolution. The NAPL removal efficiency of swelling alcohol was more effective than that of non-swelling alcohol. Removal of Benzene NAPL entrapped in the soil would be effective under the cosolvent flood condition of alcohol content greater than 40% in volume.
