A study was undertaken to investigate the distribution of Streptomyces spp. in soil in Korea. Among the different types of soil surveyed, the highest population of Streptomyces spp. recording $5.6{\times}10^5\;CFU/g$ was observed in upland soil. With reference to the soil depth, most of their population was distributed from soil surface to 5cm depth and the highest value was found in $0{\sim}2cm$ soil depth. Comparing the population of Streptomyces spp. with different soil color (by Munsell soil color chart), the highest value of $9.2{\times}10^\;CFU/g$ was showed in Oliver yellow soil (2.5Y, 6/4). On the basis of the acidity of soil samples subjected to Streptomyces spp. isolation, it is considered that the optimum pH range for Streptomyces spp. in soil lies between 6.0 to 7.5, showing the highest value of $1.05{\times}10^6CFU/g$ at pH 7.5. Among the colors of isolated colonies, gray and white colonies occupied 60% and 26% of the total isolates respectively.

The Ministry of Construction and Transportation (MOCT) has been constructing a nationwide soil information DB since 2000, as basic data for the construction of 'underground geographical information,' a project under the 2nd National Geo-spatial Information System (NGIS) master plan. The inputted soil information includes not only underground conditions such as the layer depth, type, color, and groundwater level, but also engineering information that can be applied to construction work design, such as on the standard penetration test and the compression test. It is difficult to use this information in soil analysis and design, however, because only the test results are currently available. A web-based geo-spatial information system was developed in this study to facilitate the effective application of the soil information database (DB). First, the space information, layer information, and engineering test information were loaded from the soil information DB in real time, and the earth volume, bearing capacity, and settlement were calculated to develop a web client that will evaluate the ground softness and liquefaction. It seems that the soil information DB can be actively applied to the planning and design of construction works using this system.

Polarization of the light reflected off the Moon provides information on the size and composition of the particles in the lunar regolith. The mean particle size of the regolith can be estimated from the combination of the albedo and degree of polarization, while the color ratio of the parallel-component polarization (CP) has been suggested to be related to the amount of nanophase metallic iron (npFe^0) inside the regolith particles. Both the mean size and npFe^0 abundance of the particles have been used as maturity indicators of the regolith since sustained impacts of high energy particles and micro-meteoroids cause comminution of particles and production of npFe^0. Based on our multispectral polarimetric observations of the whole near side of the Moon in the U, B, V, R, and I bands, we compare the maps of the mean particle size, CP, and the optical maturity (OM). We find that the mean particle size map is sensitive to the most immature (~0.1 Gyr) soil, the OP map to the intermediate immaturity (a few 0.1 Gyr) soil, and the CP map to the least immature (~1 Gyr) soil.
Various methods are used to remediate soil contaminated with heavy metals or petroleum. In recent years, harsh physical and chemical remediation methods are being used to increase remediation efficiency, however, such processes could affect soil properties and degrade the ecological functions of the soil. Effects of soil washing, thermal desorption, and land farming, which are the most frequently used remediation methods, on the physicochemical properties of remediated soil were investigated in this study. For soils smaller than 2 mm, the soil texture were changed from sandy clay loam to sandy loam because of the decrease in the clay content after soil washing, and from loamy sand to sandy loam because of the decrease in the sand content and increase in silt content during thermal desorption, however, the soil texture remained unchanged after land farming process. The water-holding capacity, organic matter content, and total nitrogen concentration of the tested soil decreased after soil washing. A change in soil color and an increase in the available phosphate concentration were observed after thermal desorption. Exchangeable cations, total nitrogen, and available phosphate concentration were found to decrease after land farming; these components were probably used by microorganisms during as well as after the land farming process because microbial processes remain active even after land farming. A study of these changes can provide information useful for the reuse of remediated soil. However, it is insufficient to assess only soil physicochemical properties from the viewpoint of the reuse of remediated soil. Potential risks and ecological functions of remediated soil should also be considered to realize sustainable soil use.

Soil-cement has been broadly used for eco friendly pavement, slope protection and soft soil improvement since it used for the increase of soil strength with cement. Recently, additional agents are mixed with existing soil-cement so as to improve specific properties or functions such as strength, color and permeability of it. This study aims at figuring out the physical and mechanical properties of a soil-cement mixed with crashed oyster shell and loess. The study is specially focused on the applicability of oyster shell as an alternative material for sands. To have his objective achieved a series of uniaxial compression tests were conducted. As a result, it appears that usage of oyster shell may have effect on strength improvement of mixed soils.
This study was carried out to determine the possible use of volcano eruption sand at Merapi mountain area compared with clayey soil, alfisol as turfgrass growing media. Indonesia has abundant source of eruption sand and clayey soil. Native zoysiagrass (Z. matrella) was collected from Sleman district and seashore paspalum (P. vaginatum) from Solo region. The experimental plots were treated with both organic and inorganic fertilizers. Zoysiagrass and seashore paspalum can grow on the mixture of eruption volcano sand and alfisol soil. Fertilizers application increased turf color, surface coverage rate and recovery rate of turfgrass. While fertilizer treated alfisol have no effect on the length and dry weight of zoysiagrass root. Mixing of volcano eruption sand on growing media resulted in longer root length, higher shoot dry weight of zoysiagrass than in alfisol soil. Type of fertilizer affected the pH, soil organic matter, total N, available P, available K and electrical conductivity of sand and alfisol after cultivation. Similarly to zoysiagrass, the recovery of seashore paspalum was increased by application of fertilizer, even the inorganic fertilizer showed faster recovery than organic fertilizer. Surface coverage of seashore paspalum was faster than that of zoysiagrass with or without fertilizer.
Extractions fro fertilizer and soil samples were performed to yield the operationally defined fractions 'soluble' chromate (extractable with $NH_4NO_3$), 'exchangeable' chromate (extractable with phosphate buffer pH 7.2), and these results were compared with the data obtained by extractions with ammonium sulfate, borate buffer pH 7.2, saturated borax pH 9.6, and polyphosphate (Graham's salt). In order to maintain the pH of extractant solution about constant, the concentration of extractant buffer had to be raised to at least 0.5 M. The results strongly depended on the kind of extractant, and the solid: liquid ratio. For most of the samples investigated, the extraction efficiency increased in the order borate-sulfate-nitrate-phosphate. Whereas the recovery of $K_2CrO_4\;and\;CaCrO_4$ added to the samples of basic slags prior to the extraction was about complete, the recovery of added $PbCrO_4$ was highly variable. In soil extracts, the color reaction was interfered from co-extracted humics, which react with the chromate in weak acid solution during the time period necessary for color reaction (1 hour). However, this problem can be overcome by standard addition and subtraction of the color of the extractant solution. In soil extract of about pH < 7, organic material reduced chromate during the extraction period also, and standard addition of soluble chromate is recommended to prove recovery and the stability of chromate in the samples. In admixtures of soils and basic slags, results for hexavalent chromium were lower than from the mere basic slags. This effect was more pronounced in phosphate than in nitrate extracts. As a proficiency test, samples low in organic carbon from contaminated sites in Hungary were tested. The results from $NH_4NO_3$ extracts satisfactorily matched the results of the Hungarian labs obtained from $CalCl_2$ extractants.
This study was conducted to develop the vision system of a robotic transplanter for plug-seedling. A color image processing algorithm was developed to identify and locate empty cells and bad plants in the seedling tray. The image of pepper and tomato seedling tray was segmented into regions of plants, frame and soil using threshold technique which utilized Q of YIQ for finding leaves and H of HSI for finding frame of tray in the color coordinate system. The recognition system was able to successfully identify empty cells and bad seeding and locate their two-dimensional locations. The overall success rate of the recognition system was about 99%.
A color image processing algorithm was developed to assist the robotic plug-seedling transplanter. The algorithm was designed to identify and locate empty cells in the seedling tray. The image of pepper seedling tray was segmented into regions of plant, frame and soil using thresholding technique which utilized HSI or RGB color characteristics of each region. The detection algorithm was able to successfully identify empty cells and locate their two-dimensional location. The overall success rate of the algorithm was about 88%.
The purpose of this study is to clarify the relict landform development of fluvial terrace and the soil characteristics occurring on the fluvial deposits. The physico-chemical properties of soil that are developed on terrace deposits and X-ray diffraction analysis of clay were investigated specifically. The horizon of $A_1$ consists of silt loam with reddish-brown color (5YR4/3). Its soil structures is a weak, fine, subangular, and blocky, breaking to granular. The horizon of $B_{1t}\;and\;B_{2t}$ are silt clay with either a yellowish red (5YR5/6), bright red (2.5YR4/6) color. This soil structure is weak, subangular, and blocky, with thin discontinuous bright red (2.5YR4/6) clay cutans and soft manganese concretions. This red soil structure is made on heavy-textures. It is packed compactly with parent materials of high fluvial surface sediments, and usually has a $A_1-B_{1t}-B_{2t}-C$ profile, from top to bottom. In most cases, clay accumulation in the B-horizon and clay cutans on ped surfaces are observed, which means the argillic horizon has formed. The soils derived from fluvial surface deposits are associated with soils. The soils on the high fluvial surface are considered to be a kind of paleo-red soil which were developed by strong desilicification and rubefaction, and strong leaching of bases under warmer bio-climatic condition during the old Pleistocene period. According to these morphological and anlaytical characteristics, geomorphological features and bio-climatic conditions under which the soil have developed on the high terrace sediment indicate that the soil should be classified as paleo-red soils.
