In this study, a computer program to predict the behavior of laterally loaded single pile and pile groups was developed by using a beam-column analysis in which the soils are modeled as nonlinear springs by a family of p-y curves for subgrade modulus. The special attention was given to the lateral displacement of a single pile and pile groups due to the soil condition and the cap rigidity. The analysis considering group effect was carried out for $2\;{\times}\;2\;and\;3\;{\times}\;3$ pile groups with the pile spacing 3.0B, 4.0B and 5.0B. Based on the results obtained, it is found that the overall distributions of deflection, slope, moment, and shear force in a single pile give a reasonable results irrespective of cap connectivity conditions. It is also found that even though there are some deviations in deflection prediction compared with the observed ones, the prediction by present analysis simulates much better the general trend observed by the centrifuge tests than the numerical solution predicted by PIGLET.
This study evaluated the pattern of groundwater fluctuation in cyrstalline rock using time series and factor analyses. From the results, groundwater level for the 18 wells was classified into 4 types reflecting the hydrogeological properties and rainfall event. Type 1 (DB1-5, DB1-6, DB2-2, KB-10, KB-13) was significantly influenced by groundwater flow through water-conducting features, whereas type 2 (DB1-3, DB1-7, KB-1~KB-3, KB-7, KB-11, KB-14, KB-15) was affected by minor fracture network as well as rainfall event. Type 3 (DB1-1, DB1-2) was mainly influenced by surface infiltration of rainfall event. Type 4 (DB1-8, KB-9) was reflected by the irregular variation of groundwater level caused by anisotropy and heterogeneity of crystalline rock.
Recent research on the behavior of silty sand tends to advocate the use of equivalent skeleton void ratio to characterize the density state of this type of soil. This paper presents an investigation to explore the physical meaning of the equivalent skeleton void ratio by means of DEM simulations for assemblies of coarse and fine particles under biaxial shear. The simulations reveal that the distribution pattern of fine particles in the soil skeleton plays a crucial role in the overall macroscopic response: The contractive response observed at the macro scale is mainly caused by the movement of fine particles out of the force chains whereas the dilative response is mainly associated with the migration of fine particles into the force chains. In an assembly of coarse and fine particles, neither all of the fine particles nor all of the coarse ones participate in the force chains to carry the external loads, and therefore a more reasonable definition for equivalent skeleton void ratio is put forward in which a new parameter d is introduced to take into account the fraction of coarse particles absent from the force chains.

Nonlinear cross-anisotropic properties of soil is critical for exact numerical simulation. Theoretically, initial cross-anisotropic properties can be evaluated from triaxial tests with bender element tests, and nonlinear cross-anisotropic properties over initial strain level cannot be evaluated from triaxial tests. In this study, a supposed condition among nonlinear cross-anisotropic properties is suggested to calculate nonlinear cross-anisotropic properties from triaxial tests. Maximum strain and incremental strain energy are applied to combine triaxial test results and theoretical normalized shear modulus curve, respectively Based on combined results, nonlinear cross-anisotropic properties are calculated. Numerical simulation for triaxial tests Is carried out to verify the applicability of the supposed condition with calculated cross-anisotropic properties and simplified nonlinear cross-anisotropic model.
To construct pipe lines, culverts, or other utility lines, temporary slopes formed by excavating the compacted embankment are frequently met with in the field. Ignoring stability analyses for such slopes and applying inappropriate slope inclinations often result in safety problems. In this study, stability of such slopes were investigated considering the influence of anisotropic shear strength of the layered compacted ground. A series of stability analyses were conducted for slopes varying the slope angle and the height, and assuming isotropic and anisotropic shear strength conditions, respectively. The anisotropic shear strength of the compacted soil was determined from the direct shear test for layered soil blocks varying the inclination angle between the horizontal shear surface and the direction of the soil layer. As a result of the analyses, it has been concluded that the appropriate slope inclination f3r a temporary slope could vary in accordance with the consideration of anisotropy. However, the factor of safety as well as the location of the failure surface did not show significant variation.

Drained cyclic triaxial tests were conducted on a saturated sand to examine its deformation characteristics under either axial or lateral cyclic loading condition. To apply lateral cyclic loading, the cell pressure was cycled while maintaining a constant vertical stress. The strain accumulations and flow direction in the soil were presented and discussed considering various initial stress ratios (η0), cyclic stress amplitudes and cyclic stress paths. The results indicate that axial strain accumulation shows an exponential increase with the maximum stress ratio (ηmax). The initial deviatoric stress has comparable effects with lateral cyclic stress amplitude on the accumulated axial strain. In contrast, the accumulated volumetric strain is directly proportional to the lateral cyclic stress amplitude but not much affected by η0 values. Due to the anisotropy of the soil, the accumulated axial and lateral bulging strains are greater in lateral cyclic loading when compared to axial cyclic loading even though ηmax is the same. It is also found that ηmax affects soil's lateral deformation and increasing the ratio could change the lateral deformation from contraction to bulging. The flow direction depends on ηmax in the sand under lateral cyclic loading, regardless of η0 values and the cyclic stress amplitudes, and a large ηmax could lead to great deviatoric strain but a little volumetric strain accumulation.
The media in the undersaturated zone is defined as the uppermost layer of the water table at which the groundwater is unsaturated or saturated discontinuously. The properties of the unsaturated zone can affect the reduction of contaminants that flow from the lower part of soil to the water table. In recent, there have been problems in evaluating groundwater contaminations vulnerability because weighted value for permeability is given, regardless of anisotropy and heterogeneity in the unsaturated media. Geological media have various ranges of permeability. When applying the weighted value, representative of permeability for grain sizes standardized, to construction of contamination vulnerability, it will produce more exaggerated result than the case that considers unsaturated geological properties. In this study, we performed laboratory column tests considering two sets of the unsaturated layers in order to investigate the permeability in anisotropic unsaturated zone with anisotropy. On the basis of the tests, average permeability coefficients were calculated considering the properties of unsaturated media obtained from drill cores in the field. The final contamination vulnerability map constructed shows that the contamination vulnerability map applying the properties of geological media of the unsaturated zone coincides much better with the results measured in the field, compared to the case of contamination vulnerability considering the weighted value in the unsaturated zone.
Reliability of the cone penetration test (CPT) for estimating shear strength of marine soils is investigated in this paper. For sands, the uncertainty about the angle of internal friction is analyzed. It includes the spatial variation of the soil and the model error in the equation used for interpretation. The most serious uncertainty encountered was the error in the interpretative models. Different methods of interpretation gave quite different values. Subjective opinion was introduced to combine all the interpretative models in a systematic manner. For clays, the undrained Shear Strength from the CPT results is usually =derived by empirical correlations between cone resistance and untrained shear strength from laboratory tests or field vane tests, expressed in terms of cone factor and function of overburden pressure. The uncertainty of the undrained shear strength is caused by data scatter of the cone factor in the correlation, model error of the cone factor, effect of anisotropy, and spatial variability of cone resistance. Among these uncertainties, the most serious one was the data scatter of the cone factor in the .correlation. Between the laboratory test and the field vane test used for correlation, the field vane test was more reliable.
The effects of consolidation stress history including consolidation stress ratio, OCR and cyclic loading with drainage on the undrained shear strength of cohesive soil were investig toted. The ratio$(S_u/\sigma'_{vc})ckou/(S_U/\sigma_{vc})cuv$ was observed to increase with increasing OCR. The equation (1) in this paper by Mayne(1980) for the undrained shear strength of the overconsolidated clay and the equation (4) by Yasuhara(1994), for the postcyclic shear strength were found to be relatively well applicable in the case of Kofonsolidated. It was also suggested that the value of the critical state pore pressure parameter As in these two equations for the in situ shear strength of lightly overconsolidated clay(OCR< 3) be obtained by the standard consolidating test.

Background and Necessity of the study : For more than 20 years, the soil engineering reserach group of Chonnam National University has been performing the deformation analysis of soft clayey foundation, since the University is located near the south-western coast of Korean Peninsulla, along which tide reclamation works have been under proaressing. Associsted with the fact mentioned above, the researchers have been developing a computer program in order to carry out deformation analysis of soft foundation since early 1980. Case-studies : In this research, the Biot's equation was selected as the governing equation coupled with several constitutive models including original and modified Cam-clay models, elasto-viscoplastic model, Lade's model etc. The anisotropy of soi1 can be considered in this program. To validate the accuracy of the computer program developed a couple of case-studies were performed. These include the pilot banking, sand drain considering smear effect and compound foundation reinforced with sheet pile into soft foundation.i) The pilot banking Good results could be acquired by assuming banking load as the body force composed of finite element mesh rather than equivalent concentrated load.ii) The sand drain Due to smear, the delay of consolidation was remarkable at the early stsge. so safety for the failure of foundation should be checked for the initial step of consolidation. iii) The compound foundation Accurate results were obtained by introducing the joint element method for the soft foundation reinforced with sheet pile into soiㅣ.
