  • In this study. the Modified Response Displacement Method(MRDM) for seismic design of underground box-type structures is proposed. Firstly, to investigate the applicability of the conventional RDM, various parametric studies are performed according to buried depth and soil conditions. Results from the conventional RDM are compared with those of time history analysis in terms of the maximum bending moment and relative displacement. The comparison shows that the velocity response spectrum and the determination method of foundation modulus which significantly influence the accuracy of RDM should be modified. Thus, the modified velocity response spectrum and the new determination method of foundation modulus are proposed under consideration of domestic conditions. In order to demonstrate the accuracy and validity of the proposed MRDM numerical analyses are performed according to different parameters such as depth of base rock, height and width of box, buried depth and soil condition. the comparison with the results of the time history analysis verifies the feasibility of the proposed MRDM for the seismic analysis.

  • For the tunnel pattern of PD-3, a numerical analysis using the FEM program, MrSoil, was conducted with given geotechnical properties of surrounding rockmasses to verify the analysis results by comparing with other programs. The analyzed domain was extended to the far enough distance from the excavation surface to avoid the restrained effect by the boundary condition, and the construction sequence was employed in the analysis as calculation steps to simulate the time dependent 3 dimentional behavior of surrounding ground due to tunneling. Maximum 35 mm of the tunnel crown settlement and about 13 mm of the surface settlement were computed and the amount of settlement may not give any structural damage on the concrete structures on the ground surface. The shotcrete stress of 84 kg/cm2 and the rockbolt axial force of 9 ton as a maximum are within the allowable limit. The plastic zone was restricted near the excavation surface, but forepoling around the crown may be required to prevent rock falling. It is believed that the tunnel is designed reasonablely from the economical and safety points of view.

  • The horizontal-to-vertical spectral ratio (HVSR) of ambient noise is widely used to identify the resonant frequency of a site. The frequency at the largest HVSR is regarded as the resonant frequency. The source of ambient noise is impossible to identify and control. Therefore, obtaining reliable HVSR of ambient noise requires sufficient measurement time and absence of near-field vibration. In this study, we investigated the minimum stabilization time required for a portable seismometer and the effect of the distance between the seismometer and artificial vibration on HVSR estimation. In the case of a soil site, the HVSR was stabilized after 5 minutes after sensor installation. In the case of a rock site, stabilization required more than an hour. Human-footsteps within 10 m of the seismometer strongly influenced the HVSR for the soil site. These results provide a field guideline when measuring ambient noise for HVSR.

  • Shortly after tunnel boring machine (TBM) was introduced in the tunneling industry, the use of TBM has surprisingly increased worldwide due to its performance together with the benefit of being safely and environmentally friendly. One of the main cost items in the TBM tunneling in rock and soil is changing damaged or worn cutters. It is because that the cutter change is a time-consuming and costly activity that can significantly reduce the TBM utilization and advance rate and has a major effect on the total time and cost of TBM tunneling projects. Therefore, the importance of accurately evaluating the cutter life can never be overemphasized. However, the prediction of cutter wear in soil, rock including mixed face is very complex and not yet fully clarified, subsequently keeping engineers busy around the world. Various prediction models for cutter wear have been developed and introduced, but these models almost usually produce highly variable results due to inherent uncertainties in the models. In this study, a case study of design and construction of disc cutter change is introduced and analyzed, rather than proposing a prediction model of cutter wear. As the disc cutter is strongly affected by the geological condition, TBM machine characteristic and operation, authors believe it is very hard to suggest a generalized prediction model given the uncertainties and limitations therefore it would be more practical to analyze a real case and provide a detailed discussion of the difference between prediction and result for the cutter change. By doing so, up-to-date idea about planning and execution of cutter change in practice can be promoted.

  • This study is carried out to learn the properties of forest soils in Korea and propose the reasonable management methods of forest land. Among 178 soil series surveyed until now in Korea forest soils include 64 series broken down according to the weathered products into 5 categories such as residual materials on mountain and hill, residual materials on rolling and hill, colluvial materials on local valley and fans, alluvial materials and volcanic ash soils. What discussed in this paper are classification system, parent rocks, texture class and drainage conditions of Korean forest soils. The characteristics of Korean forest soil properties classified in U.S.D.A. soil classification system are as follows: 1. Residual soils on mountain and hill (29 soil series) are almost Lithosols without any distinct soil profile development. They have loamy skeletal (11 series), coarse loamy (5 series), fine loamy (3 series), and fine clayey soils (3 series). Their drainage conditions are somewhat excessively drained in 16 series and well drained in 7 series. 2. Residual soils on rolling and hill (19 series) are Red-Yellow Podzolic soils with well developed soil profiles. They have coarse and fine loamy texture in 12 series and fine clayey texture in 5 series mostly with well drained condition. 3. Colluvial soils on local valley and fans (13 series) include mostly Regosols and some Red-Yellow Podzolic Soils and Acid Brown Forest Soils. They have loamy skeletal (4 series), coarse loamy (3 series), fine loamy (3 series), and fine clayey soils (2 series) with well drained condition. 4. Soil textures of weathered products of parent rocks are as follows: 1) Parent rocks producing coarse texture soils are rhyolite, granite gneiss, schist, shale, sandstone, siltstone, and conglomerate. 2) Parent rocks producing fine and heavy texture soils are limestone, basalt, gabbro, and andesite porphyry. 3) Granite is a parent rock producing various textured soils.

  • In this paper, the surface settlement resulted from the shallow TBM tunnelling has been numerically simulated. TBM tunnelling is especially used in urban area to avoid serious vibration and noise caused by explosion in NATM. Surface settlement is one of the most important problems encountered in all tunnelling and critical in urban areas. In this study, face vibration of TBM excavation is considered to estimate surface settlement trend according to TBM extrusion. The dynamic excavation forces are calculated by total torque on the TBM cutterhead in mixed-face of soil and weathered rock condition with shallow depth. A 3-dimensional FDM code is employed to simulate TBM tunnelling and mechanical-dynamic coupling analysis is performed. The 3D numerical analysis results showed that dynamic settlement histories and trend of surface settlement successfully. The maximum settlement occurred at the excavation point located at 2.5D behind the face, and the effect of face vibration on the surface settlement was verified in this study.

  • Recently, large and deep excavations are increasing. The damage of adjacent structures due to excavation has steadily increased with increasing construction demand. Especially in urban development and poor conditions, the excavation adjacent to the subway structures has caused a lot of problems. This paper was reviewed that the underground excavation and reinforcement of the status process through a case study on the field. And stability analysis through the case study evaluates applicability for reasonable reinforcement method by numerical analysis. As a result, the strata distribution condition of all 16 sites consisted of landfill from the top and distributed in the order of deposits, weathered soils, weak rock from the bottom. Also, when proceeding the excavation adjacent to structures, the location of site and layer conditions have highly effect on the results of the construction. Therefore, this study was applied reinforcement method to protect damage by excavation. Displacement and settlement were within allowable criterion and hence, stability of structure was analyzed as safe.

  • In NATM tunnel, the Ground-Lining Interaction model(GLI model) had been proposed a one of the numerical analysis as the ground load estimation method of the concrete lining. But this model was not applied with the interface mechanism between the ground and the support member or concrete lining. Therefor in this study, it is implemented as a model for closer than actual states that the interface element applied to the existing GLI model. And the modified GLI formula is proposed with the ground load estimation that is from the numerical results for each ground and rock cover conditions. Based on the numerical results, the ground load acting on concrete lining is reduced to ave. 88~106% in case of IV ground condition and ave. 47~57% in case of weathered soil condition comparing with the existing GLI model. It can be anticipated that the results obtained from this study can be applied to an estimation of the ground load on the concrete lining modeled like as real states, consistent and economical design.

  • In this study, it was analyzed how the pore pressure behind a subsea tunnel influences on the stability of the tunnel. The tunnel is located in the soft rock layer, and a soft sandy layer and weathered soil layer are located on the top of it. Coupled numerical analyses are performed for both drained and undrained condition with varying coefficients of lateral earth pressure. In the case of undrained conditions, the stability of the tunnel was analyzed with different thicknesses of shotcrete. On the other hand, a sensitivity analysis was performed with different hydraulic conductivities and porosities of the shotcrete for the drained conditions. The stability of a subsea tunnel was evaluated in terms of safety factor suggested by You et al.(2000, 2001, 2005) based on the shear strength reduction technique. In this paper, the safety factor of a tunnel was calculated under steady state flow condition during hydro-mechanical coupled analysis. As a result, it was found that the stability of a subsea tunnel could be rather increased by allowing a proper amount of groundwater inflow into a subsea tunnel.

  • Forces exerted on a shield TBM (tunnel boring machine) such as cutter head torque, thrust force, chamber pressure, and upward force are key factors determining TBM performance. However, the forces acting on the TBM when tunnelling the mixed ground have different tendencies compared to that of the uniform ground, which could impair TBM performance. In this study, the effect of mixed ground tunnelling was numerically investigated with torque, thrust force, chamber pressure, and upward force. A coupled discrete element method (DEM) and finite difference method (FDM) model for TBM driving model was used. This numerical study simulates TBM tunnelling in mixed ground composed of upper weathered granite soil and lower weathered rock. The effect on the force acting on the TBM according to the location and slope of the boundary of the mixed ground was numerically examined.
