  • Maintainability is a major design parameter that includes availability as well as reliability in a RAM (reliability, availability, maintainability) analysis, and is an index that must be considered when developing a system. There is a lack of awareness of the importance of predicting and analyzing maintainability; therefore, it is dependent on past-experience data. To improve the utilization rate, maintainability must be managed as a key indicator to meet the user's requirements for failure maintenance time and to reduce life-cycle costs. To improve the maintainability-prediction accuracy in the detailed design stage, we present a maintainability-prediction method that applies Method B of the Military Standardization Handbook (MIL-HDBK-472) Procedure V, as well as a Korean maintainability-prediction software package that reflects the system complexity.

  • Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) has led to paradigm shifts in the information management area by combining it with SOA and Mashup. System developers now have more chances to access various high-quality functions through API opened on the web. But external resources are controlled by service providers so that it raises the component's uncertainty in system management which is related to external resources. In the cloud environment, components related to external resources causes negative effects on system's maintainability by making them dependant on service providers. This study proposes a way to enhance maintainability by using stable external resources. For this work, we suggest the N+1-tier model in which an external resource tier is added to the N-tier model. After that, we analyze how adding an external resource tier affects the decreasing complexity of maintainability and improving maintainability on web application.

  • Software maintenance is an important and very expensive activity in software life cycle. To estimate the maintainability cost of software, many software metrics have been proposed. This paper presents the result of an experimental study to explore the relationship between maintainability and some software metrics. LCOM, RFC, DAC, and LOC are employed as metrics and time really spent for maintenance activity has been collected. In the experimental study, we have found that for some systems, the existing metrics may not be an indicator to maintenance effort, which is not consistent with our general knowledge on the relationship between them. Specifically speaking, we recognized that there should be more empirical study on the relationship between metrics and maintainability of softwares which have been developed using recent technologies such as software architecture and design pattern.

  • Code refactoring focuses on enhancing the maintainability of software to extend its lifetime. However as software applications were varied and the range of its usage becomes broaden, there are some efforts to improve software qualities like performance or reliability as well as maintainability using code refactoring techniques. Recently, as low-energy software has become one of critical issues in mobile environment, developing energy efficient software through code refactoring becomes an important one. Therefore this paper has its goal to investigate whether the existing refactoring techniques can support energy efficient software generation or not. That is to say, the existing code refactoring techniques can cause the minus of energy efficiency because they did not considered the energy consumption in their refactoring process. This paper experiments and analyzes to check whether the M. Fowler's code refactoring techniques can support the energy efficient software generation or not. Our research result can give to software developer some informations about energy-efficient refactoring techniques, and can support the development of software that has high maintainability and good energy efficiency.

  • Empirical evidence on the maintainability of object-oriented systems is far from conclusive, partly due to lack of representativeness of the subjects and systems used in the study. The present research empirically examined this issue with the systems that are mission-critical. currently operational and maintained by professionals. It was found that the 00 group appeared to consume less time while maintaining more amount of software artifacts than the NOO counterpart. This economical utilization of time appeared evident regardless of software development life cycle. This was due to the usefulness of UML for impact analysis which contributed to effective comprehension and communication. Insufficient design specifications led to ambiguity and costly defects in transferring design solutions to development. Also. the encapsulation of 00 seemed to reduce mental loads at maintenance tasks and improved code reuse. However, the number of files to manage increased and thus. dependency management is required for the 00 systems.

  • This paper describes the development and applications of maintainability simulation system based on virtual reality technology. The immersive type maintainability simulator using virtual reality is developed and assembly simulation using DELMIA software is conducted for an air-to-ground munition as an example. The simulation processes and result validate the feasibility and effectiveness of maintainability simulation system for logistic element development.

  • We survey the software faults according to the software characteristics, so we can use it to make a software testcases. We divide the software fault according to six characteristics, functionality, usability, reliability, efficiency, maintainability, and portability. We analyze the software faults to find the common factors according to the software products, also we survey the number of faults according to six characteristics. We propose the method of weight application using the relative comparison of the number of faults.

  • Many studies have been conducted on software quality evaluation. Recently, as artificial intelligence-related software has been developed a lot, research on methods for evaluating artificial intelligence functions in existing software is being conducted. Software evaluation has been based on eight quality characteristics: functional suitability, reliability, usability, maintainability, performance efficiency, portability, compatibility, and security. Research on the part that needs to be confirmed through evaluation of the function of the intelligence part is in progress. This study intends to introduce the contents of the evaluation method in this part. We are going to propose a quality evaluation method for artificial intelligence software by presenting the existing software quality evaluation method and the part to be considered in the AI part.

  • Recently expanded and enhanced software system inevitably demands serious managerial considerations on its maintenance cost. This study proposes a systematic and thorough assessment model for software development methods to the end of maintainability, incorporation ISO 9126 quality standards-based criteria. The Analytic Network Process (ANP) is employed in our model to find the effect of any dependency among the items of the criteria and the alternative methods. This study then applies the model empirically in order to evaluate the efficacies of the Structured Method and the Objected-Oriented Method. At first, this study performs the test on the existence and direction of any dependency under the three types of assumptions, and then determines the relative dominance of the two methods.
