  • A model has been proposed that can predict the ultimate torsional strength of single-box multi-cell reinforced concrete box girder under combined loading of bending, shear and torsion. Compared with the single-cell box girder, this model takes the influence of inner webs on the distribution of shear flow into account. According to the softening truss theory and thin walled tube theory, a failure criterion is presented and a ultimate torsional strength calculating procedure is established for single-box multi-cell reinforced concrete box girder under combined actions, which considers the effect of tensile stress among the concrete cracks, Mohr stress compatibility and the softened constitutive law of concrete. In this paper the computer program is also compiled to speed up the calculation. The model has been validated by comparing the predicted and experimental members loaded under torsion combined with different ratios of bending and shear. The theoretical torsional strength was in good agreement with the experimental results.

  • In this paper we present methodology for parameters identification of constitutive model which is able to present behavior of a connection between two members in a structure. Such a constitutive model for frame connections can be cast in the most general form of the Timoshenko beam, which can present three failure modes. The first failure mode pertains to the bending in connection, which is defined as coupled plasticity-damage model with nonlinear softening. The second failure mode is seeking to capture the shearing of connection, which is defined as plasticity with linear hardening and nonlinear softening. The third failure mode pertains to the diffuse failure in the members; excluding it leads to linear elastic constitutive law. Theoretical formulation of this Timoshenko beam model and its finite element implementation are presented in the second section. The parameter identification procedure that will allow us to define eighteen unknown parameters is given in Section 3. The proposed methodology splits identification in three phases, with all details presented in Section 4 through three different examples. We also present the real experimental results. The conclusions are stated in the last section of the paper.

  • A simple prediction procedure was investigated for calculating the stresses and displacements of a circular opening. Unlike existed approaches, the proposed approach starts each step with a radius increment. The stress for each annulus could be obtained analytically, while strain increments for each step can be determinate numerically from the compatility equation by finite difference approximation, flow rule and Hooke's law. In the successive manner, the distributions of stresses and displacements could be found. It should be noted that the finial radial stress and displacement were equal to the internal supporting pressure and deformation at the tunnel wall, respectively. By assuming different plastic radii, GRC and the evolution curve of plastic radii and internal supporting pressures could be obtained conveniently. Then the real plastic radius can be calculated by using linear interpolation in the evolution curve. Some numerical and engineering examples were performed to demonstrate the accuracy and validity for the proposed procedure. The comparisons results show that the proposed procedure was faster than that in Lee and Pietrucszczak (2008). The influence of annulus number and dilation on the accuracy of solutions was also investigated. Results show that the larger the annulus number was, the more accurate the solutions were. Solutions in Park et al. (2008) were significantly influenced by dilation.

  • The article brings the study of nonlocal, surface and the couple stress together to apparent the frequency retaliation of FG nanobeams (Functionally graded). For the examination of frequency retaliation, the article considers the accurate spot of neutral axis. This article aims to enhance the coherence of proposed model to accurately encapsulate the significant effects of the nonlocal stress field, size effects together with material length scale parameters. These considered parameters are assimilated through what are referred to as modified couple stress as well as nonlocal elasticity theories, which encompasses the stiffness-hardening and softening influence on the nanobeams frequency characteristics. Power-law distribution is followed by the functional gradation of the material across the beam width in the considered structure of the article. Following the well-known Hamilton's principle, fundamental basic equations alongside their correlated boundary conditions are solved analytically. Validation of the study is also done with published result. Distinct parameters (such as surface energy, slenderness ratio, as nonlocal material length scale and power-law exponent) influence is depicted graphically following the boundary conditions on non-dimensional FG nanobeams frequency.

  • Based on the orthotropic hypoelasticity formulation, a constitutive material model of concrete taking account of triaxial stress state is presented. In this model, the ultimate strength surface of concrete in triaxial stress space is described by the Hsieh's four-parameter surface. On the other hand, the different ultimate strength surface of concrete in strain space is proposed in order to account for increasing ductility in high confinement pressure. Compressive ascending and descending behavior of concrete is considered. Concrete cracking behavior is considered as a smeared crack model, and after cracking, the tensile strain-softening behavior and the shear mechanism of cracked concrete are considered. The proposed constitutive model of concrete is compared with some results obtained from tests under the states of uniaxial, biaxial, and triaxial stresses. In triaxial compressive tests, the peak compressive stress from the predicted results agrees well with the experimental results, and ductility response under high confining pressure matches well the experimental result. The reinforcing bars embedded in concrete are considered as an isoparametric line element which could be easily incorporated into the isoparametric solid element of concrete, and the average stress - average strain relationship of the bar embedded in concrete is considered. From numerical examples for a reinforced concrete simple beam and a structural beam type member, the stress state of concrete in the vicinity of talc critical region is investigated.

  • The problem of cylindrical cavity expansion incorporating deformation dependent of intermediate principal stress in rock or soil mass is investigated in the paper. Assumptions that the initial axial total strain is a non-zero constant and the axial plastic strain is not zero are defined to obtain the numerical solution of strain which incorporates deformation-dependent intermediate principal stress. The numerical solution of plastic strains are achieved by the 3-D plastic potential functions based on the M-C and generalized H-B failure criteria, respectively. The intermediate principal stress is derived with the Hook's law and plastic strains. Solution of limited expansion pressure, stress and strain during cylindrical cavity expanding are given and the corresponding calculation approaches are also presented, which the axial stress and strain are incorporated. Validation of the proposed approach is conducted by the published results.

  • The present paper investigates the combination resonance behavior of imperfect spiral stiffened functionally graded (SSFG) cylindrical shells with internal and external functionally graded stiffeners under two-term large amplitude excitations. The structure is embedded within a generalized nonlinear viscoelastic foundation, which is composed of a two-parameter Winkler-Pasternak foundation augmented by a Kelvin-Voigt viscoelastic model with a nonlinear cubic stiffness, to account for the vibration hardening/softening phenomena and damping considerations. With regard to classical plate theory of shells, von-Kármán equation and Hook law, the relations of stress-strain are derived for shell and stiffeners. The spiral stiffeners of the cylindrical shell are modeled according to the smeared stiffener technique. According to the Galerkin method, the discretized motion equation is obtained. The combination resonance is obtained by using the multiple scales method. Finally, the influences of the stiffeners angles, foundation type, the nonlinear elastic foundation coefficients, material distribution, and excitation amplitude on the system resonances are investigated comprehensively.

  • When carbon-filled rubber specimens are subjected to cyclic loading, they do not return to their initial state after loading and subsequent unloading, but exhibit a residual strain or permanent deformation. We propose a specific form of the pseudo-elastic energy function to represent cyclic loading for incompressible, isotropic materials with stress softening and residual strain. The essence of the pseudo-elasticity theory is that material behaviour in the primary loading path is described by a common elastic strain energy function, and in unloading, reloading or secondary unloading paths by a different strain energy function. The switch between strain energy functions is controlled by the incorporation of a damage variable into the strain energy function. An extra term is added to describe the permanent deformation. The finite element implementation of the proposed model is presented in this paper. All parameters in the proposed model and elastic law can be easily estimated based on experimental data. The numerical analyses show that the results are in good agreement with experimental data.

  • The paper describes localization of deformation in a bar under tensile loading. The material of the bar is considered as non-linear viscous elastic and the bar consists of two symmetric halves. It is assumed that the model represents behavior of the quasi-brittle viscous material under uniaxial tension with different loading rates. Besides that, the bar could represent uniaxial stress-strain law on a single plane of a microplane material model. Non-linear material property is taken from the microplane material model and it is coupled with the viscous damper producing non-linear Maxwell material model. Mathematically, the problem is described with a system of two partial differential equations with a non-linear algebraic constraint. In order to obtain solution, the system of differential algebraic equations is transformed into a system of three partial differential equations. System is subjected to loadings of different rate and it is shown that localization occurs only for high loading rates. Mathematically, in such a case two solutions are possible: one without the localization (unstable) and one with the localization (stable one). Furthermore, mass is added to the bar and in that case the problem is described with a system of four differential equations. It is demonstrated that for high enough loading rates, it is the added mass that dominates the response, in contrast to the viscous and elastic material parameters that dominated in the case without mass. This is demonstrated by several numerical examples.
