A comprehensive study was conducted to design economical foundations for a number of buildings on soft cohesive soil in the southern coastal regions of Iran. Both static and seismic loads were considered in the design process. Cyclic experiments indicated that the cohesive soil of the area has potential for softening. Consequently, the major challenge in the design stages was relatively high dimensions of settlement, under both static and seismic loadings. Routine soil-improvement methods were too costly for the vast area of the project. After detailed numerical modeling of different scenarios, we concluded that, in following a performance-based design approach and applying a special time schedule of construction, most of the settlement would dissipate during the construction of the buildings. Making the foundation as rigid as possible was another way to prevent any probable differential settlement. Stiff subgrade of stone and lime mortar under the grid foundation and a reinforced concrete slab on the foundation were considered as appropriate to this effect. In favor of an economical design, in case the design earthquake strikes the site, the estimations indicate no collapse of the buildings even if considerable uniform settlements may occur. This is a considerable alternative design to costly soil-improvement methods.
This paper presents tension stiffening effect of Reinforced concrete members obtained from experimental results on direct tension and bending. From the direct tension test program, crack patterns were investigated with tension softening behaviors of concrete. Tension stiffening effects and losses of strain energy were, also, analyzed from the load-deflection curve with the main experimental variables such as concrete strength, yielding stress and reinforcement ratio of rebar. Tension stiffening effect of RC members increase linearly until the first crack initiate, decrease inversely with number of cracks, and then decrease rapidly when splitting cracks are happened. The tension stiffening effect is shown to be more important at the member of lower reinforcement than that of higher. Therefore, it necessitates to consider the tension stiffening effects at a nonlinear analysis. From the above analysis, a tension stiffening model of concrete is proposed and verified by applying it to bending members. From the numerical analysis by finite element approach, it is shown that the proposed model evaluates a little higher in analyzing at nonlinear region of high strength concrete, but, perform satisfactorily in general.
As the load is increased on the steel-concrete composite structure, its interface begins to show nonlinear behavior due to the reduction of interaction, micro-crack, slip and separation, and it causes slip-softening, Therefore, it is essential to consider the partial-interaction analysis technique. Until now, however, full-interaction or, in some instances, the linear-elastic model, which are insufficient to simulate accurate behavior, are assumed in the analysis of composite structure since the analysis method and nonlinear model for interface are very difficult and complicated. Therefore, the design of composite structure is followed by the experimental method which is inefficient-because a number of tests have to be carried out according to the design environments. In this study, we carried out the nonlinear analysis according to various interface nonlinear models by interaction magnitude, and analyzed more accurate structural behavior and performance by maximum tangential traction and slip-softening at the interface. As a result of this study. we were able to prove that the nonlinear model of interface more exactly represents behavior after yielding, such as ultimate load: that initial tangential stiffness of interface has a significant effect on the yielding load of structural members or part: and that the maximum tangential traction and slip-softening mainly effects structural yielding and ultimate load. Therefore, the structural performance of composite structure is highly dependent on the steel-concrete interface or interaction, which may result in initial tangential stiffness, maximum tangential traction and slip-softening in nonlinear model.
Fresh jujubes (Zizyphus jujuba Miller) of whitish green and red ripe maturities were stored at 5 different temperatures, and quality changes through the storage were measured to find an optimal storage condition. Respiration rates and their temperature dependences for both maturities were not different from each other, which suggested non-climacteric pattern of postharvest respiration. Red ripe fruits showed heavier weight and higher content in soluble solid and ascrobic acid compared with whitish green mature fruits. Through the storage of jujubes in perforated packages tissue softening and decay were main visual quality deteriorations with the former preceding the latter. The whitish green mature jujubes showed slower rate of quality changes in softening and decay than red ripe ones, and are thus more suitable for long term storage. In the storage, the whitish green fruits changed into red color, and showed increase in soluble solid and decrease in acidity and ascorbic acid content. Storing the jujubes at $-2^{\circ}C$ resulted in symptoms of chilling injury, and storing at higher temperatures above $0^{\circ}C$ accelerated the decay and softening. $0^{\circ}C$ was found to be optimal temperature for long term storage, where jujube had the lowest rate of quality changes without chilling injury. Even at optimal temperature of $0^{\circ}C$, however, storage life retaining freshness was only around 40 days which is not enough.

The effect of dynamic recrystallization during hot forming process was implemented to a commercial FEM code by conditioned remeshing and remapping of sate variables. A datum strain for stress compensation was determined as a strain for maximum softening rate and was able to be formulated as a function of critical strain f($\varepsilon$). The validity of remapping criterion was examined by a series of mechanical tests and microstructural observation. The application of suggested datum resulted in better estimation of load-stroke during forging processes.
The influences of carbon black loading and cure type on the cure characteristics including kinetics and dynamic mechanical properties were investigated for a styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR). The rate constants of accelerated sulfur vulcanization reaction at three different temperatures were determined using a cure rheometer, and they were compared with those from the direct measurement of sulfur concentration. The strain softening behavior under dynamic deformation, known as the Payne effect was also discussed depending on the carbon black loading and cure type.

A numerical method for perdicting the behavior of a reinforced concrete column under biaxial loading is proposed, using the layered finite element method. Concrete is assumed to exhibit strain softening and steel reinforcement is elastic-plastic. The bending theory assumptions are used and bond slip of reinforcement is meglected. To perdict the entire load-deformation characteristics, displacement control method is used. This method consider not only combined effect due to axial load and bending moment but also that due to bending moments. Predicted behaviors of reinforced concrete columns under biaxial loading through the numerical method proposed in this study show good agreements with test results.

This paper presents an equation for balanced-steel ratio in longitudinal and transverse direction throughout analysis based on a space truss model introducing the concept of concrete softening effect. This paper also presents as equation for postcracking torisonal stiffness throughout analysis considering the equilibrium conditions and compatibility conditions based on shear panel. Correlation between predicted postcracking torsional stiffness, and experimental results was good, not only for beams tested in this paper but also for others in the literature.

In order to produce high-yield pitch-based activated carbon, pitch was synthesized by blending pyrolysis fuel oil (PFO) and coal-tar. Pitch was synthesized by varying the amount of coal-tar from 0~20% compared to PFO and reacting at 380~420 ℃ for 3 h. The synthesized pitch had a softening point between 80 and 260 ℃, and yields ranged from 10 to 40%. At all synthesis temperatures, as the coal-tar blending ratio increased, the yield increased and the softening point decreased. After considering the selected pitches (softening points: 230~260 ℃), pitches containing coal-tar were more volatile at a low boiling point and had a higher residual carbon content. This is a difference in the composition of coal-tar and PFO, and it was con- firmed that coal-tar has a lot of aromatics and PFO has a lot of aliphatics. The selected pitch was heated to 950 ℃ in a tubular reactor and physically activated with steam for 1 hour. Activated carbon containing coal-tar showed higher yield and microporosity compared to only PFO. In this study, the effect of increasing activated carbon yield by blending pitch raw materials was confirmed, and the physical activation characteristics according to the coal-tar mixing ratio were examined.

The effect of long-term aging degradation on magnetic properties of ferritic 11Cr low-carbon steel was investigated. Coercivity and hysteresis loss measured from the hysteresis loops decreased with long-term aging time and showed that the relation was well fitted by a second order exponential function. Vickers hardness also decreased with aging time and resulted in mechanical softening. In addition, the microstructural evolution was observed by the scanning electron microscopy, backscattered electron image and X-ray diffraction. The $Cr_{23}C_6$ precipitates along grain boundary grew fast and Laves ($Fe_2W$) phase on martensitic lath boundaries in interior grains was developed. The solid solution atoms depleted in matrix and lath subgrains recovered owing to precipitate coarsening with long-term aging degradation. There was a close relation with softening of magnetic and mechanical properties.
