Soil stabilization can make the soils becoming more stable by using an admixture to the soil. Lime stabilization enhances the engineering properties of soil, which includes reducing soil plasticity, increasing optimum moisture content, decreasing maximum dry density and improving soil compaction. Silica fume is utilized as a pozzolanic material in the application of soil stabilization. Silica fume was once considered non-environmental friendly. In this paper, the materials required are kaolin grade S300, lime and silica fume. The focus of the study is on the determination of the physical properties of the soils tested and the consolidation of kaolin mixed with 6% silica fume and different percentages (3%, 5%, 7% and 9%) of lime. Consolidation test is carried out on the kaolin and the mixtures of soil-lime-silica fume to investigate the effect of lime stabilization with silica fume additives on the consolidation of the mixtures. Based on the results obtained, all soil samples are indicated as soils with medium plasticity. For mixtures with 0% to 9% of lime with 6% SF, the decrease in the maximum dry density is about 15.9% and the increase in the optimum moisture content is about 23.5%. Decreases in the coefficient of permeability of the mixtures occur if compared to the coefficient of permeability of kaolin soft clay itself reduce the compression index (Cc) more than L-SF soil mix due to pozzolanic reaction between lime and silica fume and the optimum percent of lime-silica fume was found to be (5%+6%) mix. The average coefficient of volume compressibility decreases with increasing the stabilizer content due to pozzolanic reaction happening within the soil which results in changes in the soil matrix. Lime content +6% silica fume mix can reduce the coefficient of consolidation from at 3%L+6%SF, thereafter there is an increase from 9%L+6%SF mix. The optimal percentage of lime silica fume combination is attained at 5.0% lime and 6.0% silica fume in order to improve the shear strength of kaolin soft clay. Microstructural development took place in the stabilized soil due to increase in lime content of tertiary clay stabilized with 7% lime and 4% silica fume together.

Observed field behaviors are frequently different from the behaviors predicted in the design state due to several uncertainties involved in soil properties, numerical modelling, and error of measuring system even though a sophisticated numerical analysis technique is applied to solve the consolidation behavior of drainage-installed soft deposits. In this study, genetic algorithms are applied to back-analyze the soil properties using the observed behavior of soft clay deposit composed of multi layers that shows complex consolidation characteristics. Utilizing the program, one might be able to appropriately predict the subsequent consolidation behavior from the measured data in an early stage of consolidation of multi layered soft deposits. Example analyses for drainage-installed multi-layered soft deposits are performed to examine the applicability of proposed back-analysis method.
Improvement of soft clay deposit by preloading with vertical drains is one of the most popular techniques followed worldwide. These drains accelerate the rate of consolidation by shortening the drainage path. Although the analytical and numerical solutions available are mostly based on equal strain hypothesis, the adoption of free strain analysis is more realistic because of the flexible nature of the imposed surcharge loading, especially for the embankment loading used for transport infrastructure. In this paper, a numerical model has been developed based on free strain hypothesis for understanding the behaviour of soft ground improvement by vertical drain with preloading. The unit cell analogy is used and the effect of smear has been incorporated. The model has been validated by comparing with available field test results and thereafter, a hypothetical case study is done using the available field data for soft clay deposit existing in the eastern part of Australia and important conclusions are drawn therefrom.

An understanding of the behaviour of soft clay soils is important in a large number of civil engineering applications, including dredging operations, land reclamation and slurry management such as disposal and storage. Although the details of the behaviour depend on parameters such as the soil mineralogy, the pore water chemistry, the organic content and the microbiology, there are general features that are typical in many cases. The purpose of this paper is to present and discuss some of evaporation and desiccation observed in laboratory experiments under controlled conditions. Desiccation of dredged material is basically removal of water by evaporation which is controlled by weather and material type, etc. This study shows that (1) solar radiation, (2) wind velocity, (3) material depth, (4) trench depth are important factors in desiccation of dredged ultra soft clay.
When earth structures such as dykes or embankments are constructed on very soft clay foundation, unexpectedly large deformations of earth structures as well as clay foundation are encountered during and after construction. The final constructed section is composed of a portion of embankment above the existing ground level and that which penetrated into the soft foundation soil. This study is aimed to correctly estimate the shape of earth structures which penetrate some depth into the soft clay foundation. In this study the methods to predict penetration depth and deformation shape of embankment section after dumping of construction material. Model tests were carried out to prove the developed theory and FEM analysis. And when the mat is added, reinforcement effect was markedly noticed.

In this paper, heaving phenomenon is analyzed by laboratory tests. A laboratory test is consist of building soft clay foundation in plane-strain soil tank, construction of retaining wall, and excavation work. And range of shear strain, and destruction shape about soft clay foundation is compared, and analyzed with results of proposal formula. Using this study, safety factor is suggested for heaving phenomenon in the construction of wall on the soft clay. Actual theory is suggested by this suggested safety factor. There are various proposal formula for heaving phenomenon. For example, Terzaghi & Peck, Tschebotarioff, Bjerrum & Eide(Experience formula) and so on. Terzaghi & Peck's proposal formula is chosen, compared with laboratory test's result and analyzed in this study. A soft clay used in study is assumed homogeneous. A Depth of foundation is enough to observe shear strain by heaving phenomenon. Retaining wall is enough hard not to have vertical displacement.

Foundation soils are greatly influenced on the stability of structures. The soft clay deposited in Incheon Port area is named either nomally consolidated clay or unconsolidated clay. New harbor structures will be constructed in Incheon Port area. Not sufficient soil boring datum are obtained from the filed soil exploration due to limited time and cost. The harbor construct site is pretty large area and the soils are not homogenous. This paper presented the result of reliability analysis which was performed by both Bayesian approach and analysis of variance.
Hardening agent has been the traditional material for surface soil stabilization of soft ground. The aim of this study if to determine optimal mixture ratio of hardening agent in accordance with the required design specifications. Hardening agent consists of fly ash, gypsum, slag and cement for the ettringite hydrates and if effective for early stabilization of unconsolidated soil. The raw ground material is the clay that is widely found here and there in Korea. In this study, preliminary tests were performed to get optimal mixture ratio of stabilizer ingredient and marine clay in Jinhae was used to get physical and chemical properties. Laboratory tests of 50 stabilized soils were performed to get optimal mixture ratio for 16-stabilizer materials of 6 types, and mixture ratio of stabilizer ingredient and marine clay was determined.

Ground anchor, commonly referred to as tiebacks or tie-down, is essentially steel elements secured in the ground by cement grout. They are used to provide either lateral or vertical support for various engineered structures, and are effective in all types of soil and rock. However, ground anchor can not be used in soft clay because anchor resistance would not be guaranteed. In this paper, conceptual introduction of the Smart Anchor is presented. The Smart Anchor is a kind of friction type anchor, the load is diffused and applied to the various parts of the distributed bond length, having less impact on the grout strength, and being able to secure necessary anchoring force in relatively soft grounds. This study shows a numerical study of predicting the load transfer of The Smart Anchor in soft clay. A beam-column analysis was performed by a elastic-plastic P-y curves in soft clay.

Thick soft clay deposits which are generally located at the west and south coast of the Korean peninsula have complicated characteristics according to their orientation and formation history. Thus, several geotechnical problems could possibly occur when those soft clay deposits are used as foundations for marine structures. Deep cement mixing (DCM) method is one of the most widely used soft soil improvement method for various marine structures, nowadays. DCM method injects binders such as cement into the soft ground directly and mixes with the in-situ soil to improve the strength and other geotechnical properties sufficiently. However, the natural impacts induced by dynamic motions such as ocean waves, wind, typhoon, and tusnami give significant influences on the stability of marine structures and their underlaying foundations. Thus, the dynamic properties become important design criteria to insure the seismic stability of marine structures. In this study, the dynamic behavior of cemented Busan clay is evaluated. Laboratory unconfined compression test and resonant column test are performed on natural in-situ soil and cement mixed specimens to confirm the strength and strain-dependent dynamic behavior variation induced by cement mixing treatment. Results show that the unconfined compressive strength and shear modulus increase with curing time and cement content increment. Finally, the optimized cement mixing ratio for sufficient dynamic stability is obtained through this study. The results of this study are expected to be widely used to improve the reliability of seismic design for marine structures.
