  • The purpose of this study was to explore the social workers' reflections developed during the participatory action research seeking practice methods in the community welfare center single parent self-help groups. Nine social workers and researchers sharing difficulties in the community welfare center single parent self-help group practice were involved in the participatory action research. We performed a circulatory research repeating 'plan-action-reflection-replan' cycles through ten sessions of research meetings including peer supervision in parallel with 4 self-help group practices. Multiple practice methods were derived as the result among which change in the social workers' perception was the key. We focused on the result that the social workers' perception was changed by reflections from participatory action research and the contents of the reflections were qualitatively analyzed using materials acquired during the study. As a result the following 5 themes were derived; 'recognition and worry on the lack of appropriate practice for the self-help group', 'specification of the social workers' role based on the changed perspective on the member-social worker relation', 'confirmation of the possibility of the concerned person initiated practice', 'detailed understanding of the single parent self-help group in the community welfare center', and 'renewed recognition of the development of the single parent self-help group in the community welfare center'. Based on these results, empowerment and reflection/reflective practice for single parent self-help group in the community welfare center were discussed.

  • We examined dietary habits, food intakes, health status, and school and community life of meal skipping children, and investigated factors predicting meal skipping of children. A sample was composed of 944 children in low-income families who were provided with public meal service. The sample was obtained from the Survey of Meal Service for Poor Children conducted by the Korea Institute for Health and Social Affairs in 2007. Meal skipping was significantly associated with a lower nutrition and health status, and poor school performance of children, as hypothesized. The school age of child, family structure, region, job of caretaker, concern about diet, and the child's visit to welfare center significantly predicted frequency of meal skipping. We suggested a few implications for community practice to reduce meal skipping of children.

To this end, a survey was conducted on 232 social workers at 54 community welfare centers in Gyeonggi-do, and the t-test and IPA analysis techniques were used. As a result of the study, first, the importance of family-centered practice of social workers at community welfare centers is highly recognized, but the current performance is low. Second, as a result of verifying the difference in importance-performance regarding family-centered practice, it was found that there were statistically significant differences in all of the 6 sub-factor areas and 18 detailed items of family-centered practice. Third, as a result of IPA analysis of the importance-performance of family-centered practice, at keep up good work(family decision making, comprehensive service), at possible overkill(family focus) was derived, at low priority(family strength, individualization), at concentrate here(cooperation with family) were for each sub-factor. Based on these results, an institutional strategic plan to improve the difference between the importance and performance of family-centered practice was suggested.

  • The quickening pace of international migration in the last twenty years brought fundamental demographic and social changes to the Korean society. Increasing number of marriage-based immigrant families imposes new challenges on social work community; however, the social work community has not been equipped with necessary practice models, sets of skills and professionals with cultural competency. This study aims to explore an integrative framework of social work practice with this client group. Research foci include the profile of marriage-based immigrant families in Korea, available social services at the time, challenges and issues they face, the compatibility of the empowerment based social work practice, and micro/mezzo/macro level concerns that arise for the effective service provision. Challenges among marriage-based immigrant families are converged into personal/familial, community related, and larger social-cultural issues. Empowerment is a multi-dimensional social process to help people gain control over their lives; a process that fosters power in people, for use in their lives, their communities and in their society. Empowerment based social work practice can be the most competent framework for working with multi-cultural families considering their multi-faceted acculturation issues while they navigate thru Korean society. Issues of educating and training of culturally competent social workers are discussed.

  • Although both ecosystem theory and empowerment have become the most prevalent candidate for integrated paradigm for social welfare practices, they could not overcome completely the long-standing and sharp divides between micro and macro practices, that is, between subject and structure as a main explanatory element in social welfare realm. Along with such traditional dualism and tension, a new emerging divide between modernism and postmodernism regarding intrinsic mission and roles of social welfare has urged strongly to develop the overarching theoretical framework for social welfare practice. In this regard, this study aims to recast the ecosystem theory and empowerment through the reflexive modernization theory of critical sociologist Anthony Giddens. With relatively strong emphasis on human capability coined as the reflexivity, Giddens's own creative theory of modernization can be thoroughly expected to provide a solid foundation of integrated paradigm enough to bridge the existing dualisms in social welfare theory and practice. Especially, his unique account of integrated way of how human agency is involved in the construction of social structure and how to transform each other recursively has profound implication for empowerment to be adequate and proper comprehensive framework for social welfare practice.

  • This study was conducted to explore the effect of family centered practice on children's self-efficacy and to verify the mediating effect of family strengths. Multiple regression analysis and Sobel test were conducted using data provided by children who participated in Children's Hope Network and their primary caretakers. The study results are as follows: First, families rated highly on their level of experience regarding family-centered practice, which show that social workers were faithful in performing family-centered practice. Second, the levels of both children's self-efficacy and family strengths increased significantly after project participation when compared to the levels measured before participation. Third, family-centered practice affected children's self-efficacy only indirectly through family strengths indicating that the level of family strengths had a complete mediating effect. Implications of these results were explored in relation to the importance of family-centered practice and measures to improve social work practice.

  • Religious organizations execute various social welfare programs on the basis of their religious ideology and faith. Their practice vividly aim at mission, propagation, edification, and spreading, but also is practised as a way of philanthropy, an universal value. Daesoonjinrihoe's social welfare program can be understood in this respect. This paper investigates on which idea Daesoonjinrihoe's social welfare program takes its basis, and examines the current situation and tasks of the social welfare program. Daesoonjinrihoe runs their social welfare program on the idea of 'Resolution of grievances for the mutual beneficence of all life[Haewonsangsaeng: 解冤相生]' and 'Boeunsangsaeng(報恩相生)'. Their program is concentrated on medical welfare, welfare for elderly people, and youth welfare. It is noteworthy that Daesoonjinrihoe's welfare program is not subsidized by government as much as those of other religious organizations. This paper looks into the tasks for Daesoonjinrihoe's social welfare program in terms of operational system and hardware, and suggests that we need to show interest in multicultural welfare systems and support it as Korean society is becoming a more multicultural society.

  • The purpose of this paper is a case study on welfare QC circle which is considered as one of the management techniques to improve service quality among recently changing welfare environment. Futhermore this paper is also to suggest a new introduction of the welfare QC circle in korean social welfare agency. To accomplish these purpose, this study theoretically examines activity process and techniques of welfare QC circle. In practice, three social workers and one supervisor working at 'D' community welfare center in pusan are participated during six months. As a result, we founded the specific problems that is aroused from youth volunteer group within by fish bone chart, and proposed the alternative choices by 5W1H check sheet, and also certified to decrease turnover ratio in youth volunteering by pareto chart. This study, however, has its limitation in selection only one case study on welfare QC circle of youth volunteering. Welfare QC circle could be much contributed as one of the management techniques to enhance the quality of social welfare service from the viewpoint of the customer, If it is well developed korean welfare QC model which is suitable to social welfare organization and service. Therefore, in order to introduce welfare QC circle in korean social welfare organizations, I would like to suggest to find out a useful text of welfare QC and organize some welfare QC study groups including other suggestions.
