  • Congenital heart disease is now estimated to be the most prevalent chronic illness in children. The overall purpose of study is to enhance our understanding of mother's perception of family stress, perceived social support, and coping who has a child newly diagnosed with congenital heart disease. In this investigation, the relationship between family stress, perceived social support, and coping within the context of a acute, non life- threatening chronic illness in the situation of newly diagnosed as Rolland's typology of chronic illness. The study employed data from a subset of a large longitudinal study, children's chronic illness: parents and family adaptation conducted by M. McCubbin (5 R29 NR02563) which was funded by the NIH. The subject for this study were 92 mothers who have a child under age 12 who was newly diagnosed with congenital heart disease within the last 3-4 months. Results form correlational and regression analysis revealed that perceived social support operated as a resiliency factor between family stress and coping of mothers. Child and family characteristics appeared to be important predictors of perceived social support and mother's coping. Therefore, the findings provide an incremental contribution to the explanation of effects for perceived social support and may challenge resiliency model in previous literature. Further, these findings suggest that perceived social support and coping are both influencing in the resiliency of relatively high risk groups of families who has a child with congenital heart disease.

The social support explains health status of 55.4% and health behaviors of 2.9%. • Purpose: This study was a descriptive correlation research designed to provide basic data on family nursing interventions by examining burden, social support and quality of life for family caregivers of patients on hemodialysis. Methods: Data were collected from 132 family caregivers of patients on hemodialysis and analyzed using frequency analysis, correlation analysis, independent samples t-test method, one-way ANOVA and post-hoc analysis of $Scheff{\grave{e}}$, and multiple regression analysis. Results: Burden for family caregivers of patients on hemodialysis was 3.03, social support, 4.77, and quality of life, 3.26. Burden showed a negative correlation with social support (r=-.34, p<.001), and with quality of life (r=-.54, p<.001). There was a positive correlation between social support and quality of life (r=.54, p<.001). Factors predicting quality of life for family caregivers, were a significant and positive effect from social support (t=5.72, p<.001) and a negative effect from family burden (t=-5.62, p<.001). Conclusion: Results of the study indicate that burden of these family caregivers can be reduced by social support which plays an important role in improving quality of life. A nursing intervention program which goes beyond simply caring for patients and includes assessment of family burden and support for overall family caretaking needs to be developed.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the actual conditions of successful ageing and the influencing factors focusing on social support from family and friends to improve elderly's quality of life. The 300 respondents, all participants in programs at facilities for the elderly, were interviewed via a questionnaire. The collected data were analyzed using SPSS 23.0. The results are as follows. First, the average score for successful ageing among the participants was above average. Second, the level of successful ageing varied according to income and religion. Third, the common variables affecting active or emotionally successful ageing were support from friends, subjective health conditions, and gender. It is suggested that the community should be informed of the importance of support from family through educational programs, as the elderly still want the support of family despite family's reduced role.

  • This purposes of study are to examine the effect of family related stress and social support on the ways of coping of adolescents and provide a ground necessary to improve it. A survey was conducted on 756 adolescents who were living in Naju. Collected data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, Pearson's correlation, and multiple regression analysis. This study utilized two different models, direct effect model and buffering effect of social support in order to examine the effects of social support on the ways of coping of adolescents. Research findings suggest that the level of coping appeared to be low in general among adolescents. The finding of direct effect model of social support was that mother's support, father's support, sibling's support, lather's grade, mother's grade, and economic level effected the ways of coping of adolescents. But it was not empirically supported that the social support buffered the family related stress on the ways of coping. In other words, the effects of family related stress factor didn't decrease with the increase in the level of social support, however the level of coping increased at a mercy of the age and economic level. Finally, this paper attempted to provide some alternatives to effectively improve the ways of coping among adolescents based on empirical findings.

Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, independent sample t-test, one way ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficient, stepwise multiple regression with SPSS/WIN 19.0 program.
