In an effort to characterize the physicochemical properties and microbial risks associated with the soy sauce jangachi (Korean traditional pickle), 15 different home-made products, which were prepared from medicinal plants and wild edible vegetables, from head-families of Andong, Kyungsangbuk-do Province in Korea, and 6 different commercial products sold at supermarket, were investigated. The average pH of the mature soaking solutions and plants soaked in the 21 jangachi were $3.99{\pm}0.38$ and $3.51{\pm}0.41$, and the average acidity of the mature soaking solutions and soaked plants were $1.59{\pm}0.54$ and $1.65{\pm}0.76$, respectively. The average brix of the mature soaking solutions and plants soaked were $27.67{\pm}8.38$ and $25.61{\pm}6.60$, respectively. In salinity, which is a major factor in jangachi industry production, the average salinity of the mature soaking solutions and soaked plants were $7.55{\pm}3.26$ and $5.75{\pm}2.23$, respectively. In particular, the hot-peppers, eusuri, du-rup, kaet-ip, kuji-ppong, myeng-i and sancho jangachi were amongst the home-made products, and the salinity was above 8.8%, which was 2 folds-higher than that of the commercial sterilized products, and 1/3-lower than commercial non-sterilized products. The color difference and turbidity of jangachi were dependent on the plant parts used. In microbial risk assessment, the microorganisms related with food-borne disease, such as Escherichia coli, Salmonella sp, and Shigella sp., were not detected. After some time, total cell count analysis revealed that the commercial products sold at supermarkets were more vulnerable than the home-made products.
Soybeans released proteins when immersed in water at $50{\sim}60^{\sim}C$. We investigated the changes in the characteristics of soybean when soaked in water at different temperatures and studied the electrophoretic properties of soy proteins in recommended Korean soybean varieties after heat treatment. Soybean seeds were heated in soaking water at temperatures of 30, 40, 50, 60, $70^{\circ}C$ for 90 min, and also from 10 to 150min at $60^{\circ}C$. The pH value of the water decreased with heating time at $60^{\circ}C$, and the amount of soluble solids increased with temperature and heating time. The protein concentration of the solution increased with temperature and time. From SDS-PAGE of the proteins in soaking water, we detected two new bands of 16 kDa- and 31 kDa-proteins from the Korean soybean varieties on heat treatment.

Hydrogenated microcrystalline silicon (${\mu}c-Si:H$) films have attracted much attention as materials of the bottom-cells in Si thin film tandem photovoltaics due to their low bandgap and excellent stability against light soaking. However, in PECVD, the source gas $SiH_4$ must be highly diluted by $H_2$, which eventually results in low deposition rate. Moreover, it is known that high-rate ${\mu}c-Si:H$ growth is usually accompanied by a large number of dangling-bond (DB) defects in the resulting films, which act as recombination centers for photoexcited carriers, leading to a deterioration in the device performance. During film deposition, Si nanoparticles generated in $SiH_4$ discharges can be incorporated into films, and such incorporation may have effects on film properties depending on the size, structure, and volume fraction of nanoparticles incorporated into films. Here we report experimental results on the effects of nonoparticles incorporation at the different substrate temperature studied using a multi-hollow discharge plasma CVD method in which such incorporation can be significantly suppressed in upstream region by setting the gas flow velocity high enough to drive nanoparticles toward the downstream region. All experiments were performed with the multi-hollow discharge plasma CVD reactor at RT, 100, and $250^{\circ}C$, respectively. The gas flow rate ratio of $SiH_4$ to $H_2$ was 0.997. The total gas pressure P was kept at 2 Torr. The discharge frequency and power were 60 MHz, 180 W, respectively. Crystallinity Xc of resulting films was evaluated using Raman spectra. The defect densities of the films were measured with electron spin resonance (ESR). The defect density of fims deposited in the downstream region (with nonoparticles) is higher defect density than that in the upstream region (without nanoparticles) at low substrate temperature of RT and $100^{\circ}C$. This result indicates that nanoparticle incorporation can change considerably their film properties depending on the substrate temperature.

Surface modifications are commonly utilized to adjust the properties of the titanium and its alloy surface to the specific needs of the medical applications, but there are disadvantages such as poor osteoconductive properties and low adhesion of bone cell to implant surface. In order to improve these disadvantages, changes in surface properties have an important effect on osseointegration during implantation. In this paper we applied new technological method for improving a unique surface modification using the characteristic of an electrolytic Solution. Thus, in the electrolyte containing NaF in Na2SO4, TiO2 nanoporous was uniformly formed, and HAp nanoparticles were electrodeposited around the TiO2 nanopores, but in the electrolyte containing NH4F in (NH4)H2PO4, the coarse protrusions including HAp nano particles were regularly deposited onto the TiO2 barrier layer. The surface characteristics and the distributed elements and have been investigated by EDS analysis, and ultra-fine structure of surface are carried out using FE-SEM. To investigate the behavior of the anion, the analysis of chemical states was performed by XPS, and the narrow spectrums for Ti2P, Ca 2p, and P 2p seems to be almost similar depending on the characteristics of the electrolyte solution respectively. In addition, Ca 2p spectrum could be resolved into two peaks for Ca 2p3/2 and 2p1/2 at 347.4 and 351.3 eV, which are related to hydroxyapatite. And, the P peak can also be deconvoluted into two peaks for P1/2 and P3/2 levels with binding energy 134.2 and 133.4 eV, respectively. From the result of soaking test, the apatite morphologys were well-formed onto the modified surface according to the different conditions.
The recycled polyethylene was used for making wood-plastic composite panels. In this experiment, the sizes of wood particles used were 1/32", 1/4" and 1/2" in mesh number, and the contents of the recycled polyethylene were 10%, 30% and 50%. The physical and mechanical properties of the composite panels were investigated. At a given content of recycled polyethylene, the density of composite panel decreases with the increase of wood particle size. The thickness swelling and water adsorption decrease with the increase of recycled polyethylene, where significantly lower at 10%, compared with at 30%. In the water soaking experiment for 14 days, the dimensional stability of composite panel appeared good in the composite panel with recycled polyethylene content of 30% or higher. As the content of recycled polyethylene increases, the internal bonding strength and the modulus of rupture in bending strength increases. In SEM, the molten recycled polyethylene showed interlocking action through its penetration into tracheid openings including pits as well as binder between wood particles as the matrix material, thus increasing bonding strength and improving the physical and mechanical properties of composite panel.

Membrane separation is widely used for several applications such as water treatment, membrane reactors and climate change. Cross-linked organic-inorganic hybrid polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) / Tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) was adopted for the preparation of optimized hollow membrane (HFM) for membrane distillation or other low pressure separators for mechanical properties and permeability under varying pretreatment schemes. HFMs were prepared on semi-pilot membrane fabrication system. Novel adopted post-treatment schemes involved soaking in glycerol, magnesium sulphate (MgSO4), sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl), and isopropanol for different durations. All fibers were characterized for morphology using a scanning electron microscope (SEM), surface roughness using atomic force microscope (AFM), elemental composition by examining Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS), water contact angle (CA°) and porosity. The performance of the fibers was evaluated for pure water permeation flux (PWF). Post-treatment with MgSO4 gave the highest both tensile modulus and flux. Assessment of properties and performance revealed comparable results with other organic-inorganic separators, HF or flat. In spite of few reported data on post treatment using MgSO4 in presence of TEOS, this proves the potential of low cost treatment without negative impact on other membrane properties. The flux is also comparable with hypochlorite which manifests substantial precaution requirements in actual industrial use.The relatively high values of flux/bar for sample treated with TEOS, post treated with MgSO4 and hypochlorite are 88 and 82 LMH/bar respectively.

Currently, biofibers are used as a reinforcement in polymer composites for structural elements and construction materials instead of the synthetic fibers which cause environmental problems and are expensive. One of the chemicals with a pH close to neutral that can be potentially used as a modified fiber material is sodium chloride (NaCl). Therefore, this study aims to investigate the characteristics of a composite board made from NaCl-treated kenaf fiber. A completely randomized design method was used with consideration of two factors: the content of NaCl in the treatment solution (1 wt%, 3 wt%, and 5 wt%) and the duration of immersion of fibers in the solution (1 h, 2 h, and 3 h). The NaCl treatment was conducted by soaking the fibers in the solution for different durations. The fibers were then rinsed with water until the pH of the water reached 7 and subsequently dried inside an oven at 80℃ for 6 h. Kenaf fiber and epoxy were mixed manually with the total loading of 20 wt% based on the dry weight of the fiber. Physical and mechanical properties of the fibers were then evaluated based on JIS A 5908 particleboard standards. The results showed that increasing NaCl content in the fiber treatment solution can increase the physical and mechanical properties of the composite board. The properties of fibers treated with 5 wt% NaCl for 3 h were superior with a modulus of elasticity of 2.085 GPa, modulus of rupture of 19.77 MPa, internal bonding of 1.8 MPa, thickness swelling of 3%, and water absorption of 10.9%. The contact angle of untreated kenaf fibers was 104°, which increased to 80° and 73° on treatment with 1 wt% and 5 wt% NaCl for 3 h, respectively.
Fifteen types of rice collected from Kurdistan region-Iraq were investigated by principal component analysis (PCA) in terms of physical properties and cooking characteristics. The dimensions of evaluated grains correspond to 5.05-8.75 mm for length, 1.54-2.47 mm for width, and 1.37-1.95 for thickness. The equivalent diameter was in the range of 5.23-10.03 mm, and the area took 13.30-28.25 mm2. The sphericity analysis values varied from 0.32 to 0.56, the aspect ratio from 0.17 to 0.39, and the volume of the grain was measured in the range from 4.48 to 17.74 mm3, hectoliter weight values were 730-820 kg/m3, and true density from 0.6 to 0.96 g/cm3. The broken grain ratio was 1.5-18.3%, thousand kernel weight corresponded to 15.88 to 22.42 g. The water uptake ratios for 30 min of soaking were increased at 60℃ compared to 30 and 45℃. The PCA was used to study the correlation of the most effective factors. Results of PCA showed that the first (PC1) and second (PC2) components retained 63.4% and 34.8% of the total variance, which PC1 was mostly related to hectoliter, broken ratio, and moisture content characteristics while PC2 was mostly concerned with hardness and true density. For cooking properties, the PC1 and PC2 retained 88.5% and 9.3% of the total variance, respectively. PC1 was mostly related to viscosity, spring value, and hardness after cooking, while PC2 was mostly concerned with spring value, hardness before cooking, and hardness after cooking.
This study aimed to investigate the effect of physicochemical properties and mix ratios of iron ore (oxide feed): coke (reductant) on the carbothermic reductions of iron ore. Coke size was fixed at ≤63 ㎛ while iron ore size varied between 150-63 ㎛ and ≤63 ㎛ respectively. Mix ratios were changed from 100:0 (reference) to 80:20 and 60:40 while the temperature, heating rate and soaking duration in muffle furnace were fixed at 1100 ℃, 10 ℃/min and 1 hour. Particle size analyzer, XRF, CHNS and XRD analyses were used for determination of raw feed characteristics. The occurrence of phase transformations from various forms of iron oxides to iron during the carbothermal reductions were identified through XRD profiles and supported with weight loss (%). XRF analysis proved that iron ore is of high grade with 93.4% of Fe2O3 content. Other oxides present in minor amounts are 2% Al2O3 and 1.8% SiO2 with negligible amounts of other compounds such as MnO, K2O and CuO. Composite pellet with finer size iron particles (≤63 ㎛) and higher carbon content of 60:40 exhibited 45.13% weight lost compared to 32.30% and 3.88% respectively for 80:20 and 100:0 ratios. It is evident that reduction reactions can only occur with the presence of coke, the carbon supply. The small weight loss of 3.88% at 100:0 ratio occurs due to the removal of moisture and volatiles and oxidations of iron ore. Higher carbon supply at 60:40 leads into better heat and mass transfer and diffusivity during carbothermic reductions. Overall, finer particle size and higher carbon supply improves reactivity and gas-solid interactions resulting in increased reductions and phase transformations.

In paste backfill mining, cemented coal gangue-fly ash backfill (CGFB) can effectively utilize coal-based solid waste, such as gangue, to control surface subsidence. However, given the pressurized water accumulation environment in goafs, CGFB is subject to coupling effects from water pressure and chloride ions. Therefore, studying the influence of pressurized water on the chlorine salt erosion of CGFB to ensure green mining safety is important. In this study, CGFB samples were soaked in a chloride salt solution at different pressures (0, 0.5, 1.5, and 3.0 MPa) to investigate the chloride ion transport characteristics, hydration products, micromorphology, pore characteristics, and mechanical properties of CGFB. Water pressure was found to promote chloride ion transfer to the CGFB interior and the material hydration reaction; enhance the internal CGFB pore structure, penetration depth, and chloride ion content; and fill the pores between the material to reduce its porosity. Furthermore, the CGFB peak uniaxial compression strain gradually decreased with increasing soaking pressure, whereas the uniaxial compressive strength first increased and then decreased. The resulting effects on the stability of the CGFB solid-phase hydration products can change the overall CGFB mechanical properties. These findings are significant for further improving the adaptability of CGFB for coal mine engineering.
