Time-Resolved Infrared Spectroscopy of Molecular Reorientation During FLC Electro-Optic Switching

  • Polarized Fourier transform infrared (IR) absorption is used to probe molecular conformation in a ferroelectric liquid crystal (FLC) during the reorientation induced by the external field. Spectra of planar aligned cells of FLC W314 are measured as functions of IR polarizer orientation and electric field applied to the FLC. The time evolution of the dichroism of the absorbance due to biphenyl core and alkyl tail molecular vibration modes, is observed. Static IR dichroism experiments show a W314 dichroism structure in which the principal axis of dielectric tensor from molecular core vibration are tilted further from the smectic layer normal than those of the tail. This structure indicates the effective binding site in which the molecules are confined in the Sm-C phase has, on average, "zig-zag" shape and this zig-zag binding site structure is rigidly maintained while the molecular axis rotates about the layer normal during field-induced switching.

  • 3차원 영상을 디스플레이하기 위한 반사형 광기록식 공간 광소자(Optically Addressed Spatial Light Modulator)를 연구하였다. 다시점 영상으로 표현되는 3차원 영상을 시분할 방식으로 디스플레이 하기 위해서는 고속의 프레임 구동이 가능한 디스플레이 소자가 있어야 하는데 본 연구에서는 Surface Stabilized Ferroelectric Liquid Crystal을 이용하여 그림 1과 같은 구조를 갖는 소자를 제작하였다.$^{(1)}$ 입력상이 입사되는 방향에 1.1 미리 미터 정도의 ITO 유리 기판이 있으며 투명 전극 다음에 약 2마이크론 정도의 비결정질 구조를 갖는 Si:H 감광층이 있다. 반사형 구조를 위해서 반사경으로 알루미늄 층을 10마이크론 X 10 마이크론 크기의 미소 패턴으로 화소화하였으며 강유전성 액정 결정을 Surface Stabilized화하기 위해서 배양막과 2 마이크론 이하의 Spacer를 두었다. 일반적인 액정 소자와 같이 다시 배양막과 유리 기판을 갖게 하였다.   • Benzylideneacetophenones are known as chalcones[1]. The chalcone has been known to be a photo-isomerizable and photo-dimerizable chromophore. The chalcone derivatives were prepared by base-catalyzed condensation of aldehydes and acetophenones, which were substituted with various alkyl chains. The synthesized chalcone was introduced into the t-BOC protected diamine through William synthesis reaction. Photocrosslinkable polyimide was prepared via one-step imidization reaction of DOCDA (5-(2,5-dioxotetrahydro furyl}-3-methyl-3-cyclohexene-1,2-dicarboxylic anhydride) and the chalcone introduced diamine using isoquinoline (5 wt%) in m-cresol. The polyimide solutions were spin-coated onto the quartz, silicone wafer and glass substrates and the obtained thin films were irradiated obliquely with linearly polarized UV light.

Synthesis and Properties of Non-chiral Liquid Crystalline Molecules with Semi-Fluorinated Alkyl Chains

  • In this paper, new non-chiral molecules with semi-fluorinated alkyl chains were synthesized varying the structure of central bent core unit. Their mesomorphic properties were investigated by DSC and polarized microscopy. The compound with 1,3-dihydroxy phenylene unit could form an enantiomeric smectic phase, but the remaining compounds with bent-core mesogenic unit were not liquid crystalline. In this presentation, their x-ray measurement and electro-optical property will be also described.

  • A series of polysiloxanes containing alkylsulfonyl side groups were synthesized using a polymer analogous reaction beginning from poly(methylhydrosiloxane) and the corresponding olefins. These polymers showed a mesomorphic behavior with smectic liquid crystalline phases. The chemical and physical properties of these polymers were examined using nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, gel permeation chromatography, differential scanning calorimetry, optical polarizing microscopy, and X-ray diffraction.

  • We propose a dual in-plane parallel electrode structure of a vertical configuration of a helix-deformed ferroelectric liquid crystal (HDFLC) mode for better brightness than a single in-plain electrode case. This structure provides high brightness in addition to the analog gray scale capability, fast response, and wide-viewing characteristics. In contrast to a conventional HDFLC in a planar geometry, smectic layers arrange themselves parallel to the substrates and thus extremely uniform alignment of molecules in a large area is naturally achieved in our new configuration.

  • We have designed, synthesized, and evaluated the physical properties of some high birefringence (${\Delta}n$) isothiocyanato biphenyl-bistolane liquid crystals. These compounds exhibit ${\Delta}n^-$ 0.4-0.7 at room temperature and wavelength $\lambda$=633 nm. Laterally substituted short alkyl chains and fluorine atom eliminate smectic phase and lower the melting temperature. The moderate melting temperature and very high clearing temperature make those compounds attractive for eutectic mixture formulation. Several mixtures based on those compounds were formulated and its physical properties evaluated.

  • A homologous series of cholesteryl biphenyl ester derivatives was prepared. The thermal behaviors of compounds were studied by differential scanning calorimetry and by polarizing microscope equipped with a hot-stage. The cholesteric phase is present in all the compounds, whereas the smectic one is absent in the compounds with R = 1 and 2. The compounds possessed higher phase transitiof' temperature and wider temperature range of meso phase in comparison with known cholesteric liquid crystal phases.

  • The synthesis and characterization of very stable Pd(Ⅱ) η1-imine complexes of bis(3,4-dialkyloxybenzylidene-3', 4'-dialkyloxyaniline)dichloropalladium(Ⅱ) with alkyl chain of hexyl (8), octyl (9), decyl (10) and dodecyl (11) groups, a nd of bis(4-ethyloxybenzylidene-4'-ethyloxyaniline)dichloropalladium(Ⅱ) as a model complex are described. The molecular structure with twisted board-like geometry of the complex resulting from the coordination of Pd(Ⅱ) with η1-imine bonding was confirmed by X-ray crystallographic analysis of the model complex. In contrast to the imine ligands, all the complexes with an exception of 11 display a thermally stable monotropic smectic A mesophase without any decomposition of the complex. These results, characterized by a combination of differential scanning calorimetry, optical polarized microscopy, and powder X-ray scattering experiments, are discussed.

Synthesis and Characterization of New Liquid Crystalline Fumarate and Maleate Monomers with Two Symmetrical Mesogens

  • 4-Hydroxy-4'-methoxyazobenzene and 4-hydroxy-4'-cyanoazobenzene were synthesized from phenol with p-anisidine and p-aminobenzonitrile through a diazotization reaction, respectively. They were reacted with 2-chloroethanol, 2-(2-chloroethoxy)ethanol, or 2-[2-(2-chloroethoxy)ethoxy]ethanol to produce six kinds of new mesogenic alcohols having an azobenzene group that is sensitive to the ultraviolet. Twelve kinds of new photoresponsive monomers with two symmetrical mesogens were prepared by the reaction of the mesogenic alcohols with fumaric acid or maleic acid through a Mitsunobu reaction. The resulting monomers have different length of flexible ethyleneoxy spacer tethered to azobenzene group. The length of the spacer affected their thermal stability, solubility, and phase transition temperature. Structures of the monomers were identified by FT-IR and ¹H-NMR spectra. Their phase transition temperatures and thermal stability were also investigated by a differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and a thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). From an optical polarizing microscopy, all the prepared monomers except fumarate-1 and maleate-1 were found to show enantiotropic liquid crystallinity with a smectic texture like focal-conic, fan-shaped, and batonnet textures.
