  • This paper presents a linear computational homogenization framework to evaluate the effective (or generalized) electromechanical coupling coefficient (EMCC) of adaptive structures with piezoelectric structural fiber (PSF) composite elements. The PSF consists of a silicon carbide (SiC) or carbon core fiber as reinforcement to a fragile piezo-ceramic shell. For the micro-scale analysis, a micromechanics model based on the variational asymptotic method for unit cell homogenization (VAMUCH) is used to evaluate the overall electromechanical properties of the PSF composites. At the macro-scale, a finite element (FE) analysis with the commercial FE code ABAQUS is performed to evaluate the effective EMCC for structures with the PSF composite patches. The EMCC is postprocessed from free-vibrations analysis under short-circuit (SC) and open-circuit (OC) electrodes of the patches. This linear two-scale computational framework may be useful for the optimal design of active structure multi-functional composites which can be used for multi-functional applications such as structural health monitoring, power harvest, vibration sensing and control, damping, and shape control through anisotropic actuation.

  • The use of smart dampers to optimally control the response of structures is on the increase. To maximize the potential use of such damper systems, their accurate modeling and assessment of their performance is of vital interest. In this study, the performance of a controllable fluid dashpot damper, in terms of damper forces, damper dynamic range and damping force hysteretic loops, respectively, is studied mathematically. The study employs a damper Bingham-Maxwell (BingMax) model whose mathematical formulation is developed using a Fourier series technique. The technique treats this one-dimensional Navier-Stokes's momentum equation as a linear superposition of initial-boundary value problems (IBVPs): boundary conditions, viscous term, constant Direct Current (DC) induced fluid plug and fluid inertial term. To hold the formulation applicable, the DC current level to the damper is supplied as discrete constants. The formulation and subsequent simulation are validated with experimental results of a commercially available magneto rheological (MR) dashpot damper (Lord model No's RD-1005-3) subjected to a sinusoidal stroke motion using a 'SCHENK' material testing machine in the Materials Laboratory at the University of Technology, Sydney.

  • Recent advances in electronic technology have engendered a need for research on the use of smart materials in clothing. Electro-conductive fibers are expected to be a crucial element of wearable devices. Therefore, in this study, we have attempted to develop electro-conductive threads and cables using silver nanowires. Based on the characteristics of silver nanowire, in which electro-conductivity can be imparted via heat treatment, we prepared conductive threads by coating nylon yarn with silver nanowires and curing at temperatures of 140℃, 150℃, and 160℃. Conductive threads cured at 140℃ had the highest conductivity, followed by threads cured at 160℃ and 150℃ respectively. The order of the electrical conductivity of the threads after tensile testing was consistent with the original order of the conductivity of the threads. When we evaluated the sensing performance of electro-conductive cables fabricated from these threads, the cables manufactured from threads cured at 140℃ and 160℃ were found to function normally within temperature and humidity sensors. All the cables operated normally in illuminance and electrocardiogram sensors. Thus, we believe that threads made of silver nanowire have sufficient electrical conductivity to be utilized as wearable sensors.

  • Due to the unique recipes and processes of each company, not only differences among the results of dyeing textile materials exist but they are also difficult to predict. This study attempted to develop a color prediction model based on deep learning to optimize color realization in the dyeing process. For this purpose, deep learning-based models such as multilayer perceptron, CNN and LSTM models were selected. Three forecasting models were trained by collecting a total of 376 data sets. The three predictive models were compared and analyzed using the cross-validation method. The mean of the CMC (2:1) color difference for the prediction results of the LSTM model was found to be the best.

  • In this paper, a long gauge Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) sensor system is described and long gauge FBGs are well-suited for measuring the upper parts of the bridge piers under the extremely severe movement conditions. In the experiments, we used more than 30m long FBG sensors to measure the movement of top part of the bridge piers which are separated from the main bridge by cutting the decks. With the actuator, the deck and girders were pushed and released. We checked the movement of the top of the pier while releasing the pressure of the actuator with the long gauge fiber sensor. In order to measure the movement of the upper part of the pier, the reference point must be outside of the pier. Using the optical fiber sensors, one end of the sensor is attached to the top of the pier and the other end is attached to the bottom of the next pier. The fiber sensors showed good response to the release loading and we could calculate the movement of the top part of the pear.

  • In this paper, the effect of magnetic field on the vibration behavior of a Magnetorheological elastomer (MRE) sandwich MEMS actuated by electrostatic actuation with conductive skins are examined within the multiple scales (MMS) perturbation method. Magnetorheological smart materials have been widely used in vibration control of various systems due to their mechanical properties change under the influence of different magnetic fields. To investigate the vibrational behavior of the movable electrode, the Euler-Bernoulli beam theory, as well as Hamilton's principle is used to derive the equations and the related boundary conditions governing the dynamic behavior of the system are applied. The results of this study show that by placing the Magnetorheological elastomer core in the movable electrode and applying different magnetic fields on it, its natural vibrational frequency can be affected so that by increasing the applied magnetic field, the system's natural frequency increases. Also, the effect of various factors such as the electric potential difference between two electrodes, changes in the thickness of the core and the skins, electrode length, the distance between two electrodes and also change in vibration modes of the system on natural frequencies have been investigated.

  • From the past to the present, banners are consistently used as effective advertising means. In the case of Korea, there are frequent situations in which hidden advertisements are installed. As a result, such hidden advertisement materials may damage urban aesthetics and moreover, incur unnecessary manpower consumption and waste of money. The proposed method classifies the detected banners into good banner and bad banner. The classification results are based on whether the relevant banners are installed in compliance with legal guidelines. In the process, YOLO and Open Computer Vision library are used to determine from various perspectives whether banners in CCTV images comply with the guidelines. YOLO is used to detect the banner area in CCTV images, and OpenCV is used to detect the color values in the area for color comparison. If a banner is detected in the video, the proposed method calculates the location of the banner and the distance from the designated bulletin to determine whether it was installed within the designated location, and then compares whether the color used in the banner is complied with local government guidelines.

  • Deteriorating soil physical properties and increasing soil pathogens due to the continuous cultivation of field crops are the leading causes of productivity deterioration. Crop rotation, soil heat treatment, and chemical control are used as pest control methods; however, each has limitations in wide application to domestic agriculture. In particular, chemical control requires improvement due to direct exposure to sterilizing solution, odor, and high-intensity work. To improve the overall domestic agricultural environment, the problems of time and cost, such as field maintenance and cultivation scale, must be addressed; therefore, mechanization technology for chemical control must be secured to derive improvement effects in a short period. Most related studies are focused on the control effect of the DMDS (dimethyl disulfide) sterilizer, and research on the performance of the sterilization spray device has been conducted after its introduction in Korea, but research on the corrosion suitability of the material is lacking. This study conducted a corrosion test to secure the corrosion resistance of a soil sterilizer injection pump, and a mechanical failure mode by corrosion by the material was established. The corrosion test comprised operation and neglect tests in which the sterilizing solution was circulated in the pump and remained in the pump, respectively. As a result of the corrosion test, damage occurred due to the weakening of the mechanical strength of the graphite material, and corrosion resistance to aluminum, stainless steel, fluororubber, and PPS (polyphenylene sulfide) materials was confirmed.
