  • Piezoelectric solids such as PZT and PLZT have been widely used as sensors or actuators for various smart structural systems. The main problem occurring in the applications is that a larger and larger actuation force is required to maximize the function of the system. This naturally leads to local concentrations of electric or stress fields near crack tips or geometric irregularities and thereby results in a nonlinear behavior of the system Hence, it becomes more important to Predict the nonlinear behavior of piezoelectric solids In this Paper we investigate the micro-mechanism of nonlinear behavior in piezoelectric materials and propose constitutive equations. The calculation results obtained from an associated finite element Program are shown to be qualitatively consistent with experiments.

Seismic response control of buildings with force saturation constraints

  • We present an approach, based on the state dependent Riccati equation, for designing non-collocated seismic response control strategies for buildings accounting for physical constraints, with particular attention to force saturation. We consider both cases of active control using general actuators and semi-active control using magnetorheological dampers. The formulation includes multi control devices, acceleration feedback and time delay compensation. In the active case, the proposed approach is a generalization of the classic linear quadratic regulator, while, in the semi-active case, it represents a novel generalization of the well-established modified clipped optimal approach. As discussed in the paper, the main advantage of the proposed approach with respect to existing strategies is that it allows to naturally handle a broad class of non-linearities as well as different types of control constraints, not limited to force saturation but also including, for instance, displacement limitations. Numerical results on a typical building benchmark problem demonstrate that these additional features are achieved with essentially the same control effectiveness of existing saturation control strategies.

  • PMN-PZT 적충형 세라믹 액츄에이터 소자를 제작한후 그 열화 특성을 조사하였다. 액츄에이터는 tape casting 방법으로 green sheet를 제작한후, screen printing방법을 이용하여 전극형상을 만들고, lamination과 cutting공정을 통하여 소자를 제작하였다. 작된 소자의 구조적인 특성을 분석하기 위하여 X-ray diffractometer를 사용하였으며, Doppler effect를 사용하는 laser vibrometer를 이용하여 전압에 따른 변위량을 측정하였다. 제작된 소자의 열화 특성을 알아보기 위하여 60 Hz의 triangular 교류 파형을 적충형 세라믹 액츄에이터에 인가하여 열화전과 후의 P-E hysteresis loop의 변화를 살펴보았으며, unipolar AC 전압을 지속적으로 인가하여 소자를 depling 시킴으로써 열화현상을 관찰하였다. 파단면에 대한 SEM 분석을 통하여 소자의 파괴 메카니즘을 알아 보도록 하였다. 이로부터 전기적, 기계적 열화가 소자의 동작에 미치는 영향에 대해서 알아 보았다.

  • Electrical relay in an essential part of smart grids, electrical vehicles, and LED lightning systems. Therefore, studying relay reliability is important. Relays using permanent magnet actuators (PMAs), which are energy efficient, are also in the spotlight. However, most of the permanent magnets used in PMAs have a characteristic wherein the magnetic flux decreases as the temperature increases. When the magnetic flux is reduced, the force acting on the actuator is reduced. Therefore, in this study, we measured the decrease in the relay operating speed with permanent magnet reduction due to temperature rise. In addition, changes in the bouncing phenomena due to magnetic flux reduction were analyzed. As a result, the operating speed of the relay has decreased and the bouncing phenomenon has not significantly changed.

A survey study on navigation and attitude control technology for the development of Korean lunar probe (한국형 달탐사선 개발을 위한 탐사선의 자세제어 및 항법 기술에 관한 현황 연구)

  • After the first successful Apollo program, many countries around the world launched their own programs for exploring the moon. This paper surveys various navigation and attitude control systems of several past lunar exploration programs for the purpose of preparing a program for the first Korean lunar probe. For this first we investigate successful programs by introducing the sensors and actuators used for these programs, particularly focusing on those of Clementine and SMART-1 of USA and EU, respectively. Then based on the study, we suggest the necessary components of navigation and attitude control systems suitable for our lunar probe program.

Shape morphing and adjustment of pantographic morphing aerofoil section structure

  • This study concerns with morphing structures, e.g. as applied in the aerospace industry. A morphing aerofoil structure capable of variable geometry was developed, which was shown to be able to cater for the different aerodynamic requirements at different stages of flight. In this work, the useful and relatively simple method has been applied, which provides a direct method for calculating required morphing shape displacements via finding the most effective bar through calculating bar sensitivity to displacement and calculating set of length actuations for bar assembly to control/adjust shape imperfection of prestressable structural assemblies including complex elements ("macro-elements", e.g., the pantographic element), involving Matrix Condensation. The technique has been verified by experiments on the physical model of an aerofoil shaped morphing pantographic structure. Overall, experimental results agree well with theoretical prediction. Furthermore, the technique of multi-iteration adjustment was presented that effective in eliminating errors that occur in the practical adjustment process itself. It has been demonstrated by the experiments on the physical model of pantographic morphing structure. Finally, the study discusses identification of the most effective bars with the objective of minimal number of actuators or minimum actuation.

Application of dithering control for the railway wheel squealing noise mitigation

  • A new methodology for mitigation of the wheel squealing is proposed and investigated based on the dithering control. The idea can be applied in railway lines particularly in urban areas. The idea is clearly presented, and applied to a validated model. A full-scale model including the vehicle, curved track and wheel/rail contact is developed in the time domain to analyze the possibility and level of wheel squeal noise. Comparing the numerical results with a field test, the model is validated in different levels namely i) occurrence, ii) squealing frequency and iii) noise level. Two different approaches are proposed a) dithering of the wheel with piezoelectric patches and b) dithering of the rail with piezoelectric stacks. The noise level as well as the wheel responses is compared after applying the control strategy. A parametric study is carried out and effect of the dithering voltage and frequency on the squealing noise is investigated. It is found that both the strategies perform quite effectively within the saturating threshold of piezoelectric actuators.

A harmonic movable tooth drive system integrated with shape memory alloys

  • Continuous rotating SMA actuators require motion conversion mechanisms, so their structure is relatively complex and difficult to realize the miniaturization. Here, a new type of continuous rotating actuator driven by SMA is proposed. It combines the movable tooth drive with SMA drive. The structure and working principle of the integrated movable tooth drive system is introduced. The equations of temperature, stress and strain of memory alloy wires, and the output torque of drive system are given. Using these equations, the temperature, the output forces of the SMA wires, and output torque of the drive system are studied. Results show that the compact drive system could give large output torque. To obtain large output torque plus small fluctuation, large eccentricity and small diameter of the SMA wire should be taken. Combined application of ventilation cooling and high current can increase the rotary speed of the drive system.

  • This paper reviews recent developments and applications of dielectric elastomers (DEs) and suggests various techniques to improve DE properties. DEs as smart materials are a variety of electro-active polymers (EAPs) that convert electrical energy into mechanical energy and cause a large deformation when a voltage is applied. The dielectric constant, modulus, and dielectric loss of DEs determine the efficiency of deformation. Among these, the dielectric constant significantly affects their performance. Therefore, various recent approaches to improve the dielectric constant are reviewed, including the enhancement of polarization, introduction of microporous structures in the matrix, and introduction of ferroelectric fillers. Furthermore, the basic principles of DEs are examined, as well as their various applications such as actuators, generators, sensors, and artificial muscles.

  • Piezoelectric or magnetostrictive materials, known as smart materials, have been researched widely for sensors or actuators in micro system technology. In our research, thick sol-gel lead zirconate titanate(Pb(Zr$\sub$1-x/Ti$\sub$x/)O$_3$) films were fabricated and their characteristics were investigated f3r angular rate sensor applications. The thickness of the PZT films is 1.5${\mu}$m, which is required by a vibration angular rate sensor for a good actuation and sensing. The remnant polarization of the PZT flms is 12.0 ${\mu}$C/$\textrm{cm}^2$. The electromechanical constants of PZT thin film showed the value of susceptance(B) of 4800${\mu}$ s at capacitance of 790pF. The PZT films were applied to the vibration angular rate sensor structure and the vibration of 1.78 ${\mu}$m in amplitude at the resonant frequency of 35.8㎑ was obtained by driving voltage of 5V$\sub$p-p/ of bulk piezoelectric materials with out of phase signal through voltage and inverting amplifier.
