Wind turbine blades represent a key component of wind turbines, which extract energy from the wind. In the present study, the structural design of a small wind turbine blade is undertaken using a numerical analysis. The reliability of numerical results is verified through a comparison with the full-scale structural test data of a current blade. To modify the blade design, the blade was divided into several sections and the effect of the thickness of each section was investigated in a numerical analysis. Finally, the modified blade was designed with a lightweight and high-strength.
In this study, we have focused on commonly used 14 different small wind turbine airfoils (A18, BW3, Clark Y, E387, FX77, NACA 2414, RG 15, S822, S823, S6062, S7012, SD6060, SD7032, SD7062). The main purpose of the study is to determine the lift, drag and lift/drag coefficients of these airfoils with numerical analysis and to verify 2 best airfoil's results with experimental analysis. Airfoils were determined from past studies on small wind turbines. Numerical analyzes of the airfoils were done with Ansys Fluent fluid dynamics program. Experimental analyzes were done at wind tunnel in Erciyes University, Turkey. Lift and drag coefficients of these airfoils were determined for 50,000-100,000-200,000 Reynolds numbers.
Small horizontal axis wind turbines (HAWTs) can be used to produce power in areas where the wind conditions are not favorable or optimal for large HAWTs. A newly designed airfoil for use in small HAWTs was analyzed in CFD to predict the aerodynamic performance at various Reynolds numbers over a various angles of attack. The coefficient of lift and drag, CL and CD, and the pressure distribution over the airfoil was obtained. It was found that the airfoil could achieve very good aerodynamic characteristics. The results of the numerical analysis will be compared against experimental data for validation purposes.
As the world-wide supply of fossil fuel sources decreases, the need for efficient energy conservation in addition to developing green energy technologies becomes critical. Wind energy is now regarded as one of the most rapidly expanding energy sources in the world. However, due to the high cost for the foundation of large turbines and the high wind speed (over 12 m/s) required, it is very difficult to establish inland wind power plants. In order to solve issues mentioned above, experiments were performed using the small wind power system operated in a low wind speed. In this research, inland wind condition was first analyzed, and 300 W and 1 kW small wind power generators were then installed on a roof and efficiencies of generating electricities were compared.
As the world supply of fossil fuel sources decreases, the need for efficient energy consevation and develping green energy technologies becomes critical. Because of the high cost of the foundation for large turbines and optional high wind speed (over 12 m/s), it is very difficult to be located at inland city. For the solution above mentioned problem, we have been experimented about that not only using the adaption of wind power system on buildings for improving turbine efficiency, but also applying a wound rotor type induction generator for a small wind turbine. In this research, we try to find out the wind direction and wind speed those were measured every 1 min., during operation period, using the anemometers which consist of horizontally spinning cups on a vertical post. Performance testing for small wind turbine generating system was carried out by using the induction motor and invertor. Finally, we measured the power of 1 kW wind turbine system with the clamp meter and a voltmeter.

This paper focuses on the design and control of a new concept for wind turbines with a planetary gearbox to realize a power split. This concept, where the generated wind power is split into two parts, is to increase the utilization of the wind power and may be particularly suitable for large scale off-shore wind turbines. In order to reduce the cost of the power electronic devices, a synchronous generator, which is driven by the planetary gear, is directly connected to the power grid without electronic converter. A servo drive, which functions as the control actuator, is connected to the power grid by a power electronic converter. With small scale power electronic device, the current harmonics can also be reduced. The speed of the main shaft is controlled to track the optimal tip speed ratio. Meanwhile the speed of the synchronous generator is controlled to stay at the synchronous speed. The minimum rated power of the servo motor and the converter, is studied and discussed in this paper. Different variants of the wind turbine with a planetary gear are also compared. The controller for optimal tip speed ratio and synchronous speed tracking is given.
Aerodynamic characteristic of a small scale wind turbine under the influence of an incoming uniform wind field is studied using k-ω Shear Stress Transport turbulence model. Firstly, the lift and drag characteristics of the blade section consisting of S826 airfoil is studied using 2D simulations at a Reynolds number of 1×105. After that, the full turbine including the rotational effects of the blade is simulated using Multiple Reference Frames (MRF) and Sliding Mesh Interface (SMI) numerical techniques. The differences between the two techniques are quantified. It is then followed by a detailed comparison of the turbine's power/thrust output and the associated wake development at three tip speeds ratios (λ = 3, 6, 10). The phenomenon of blockage effect and spatial features of the flow are explained and linked to the turbines power output. Validation of wake profiles patterns at multiple locations downstream is also performed at each λ. The present work aims to evaluate the potential of the numerical methods in reproducing wind tunnel experimental results such that the method can be applied to full-scale turbines operating under realistic conditions in which observation data is scarce or lacking.

The paper presents a numerical approach to study of fluid flow characteristics and to predict performance of wind turbines. The numerical model is based on Finite-volume method (FVM) discretization of unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (URANS) equations. The movement of turbine blades is modeled using moving mesh technique. The turbulence is modeled using commonly used turbulence models: Renormalization Group (RNG) k-${\varepsilon}$ turbulence model and the standard k-${\varepsilon}$ and k-${\omega}$ turbulence models. The model is validated with the experimental data over a large range of tip-speed to wind ratio (TSR) and blade pitch angles. In order to demonstrate the use of numerical method as a tool for designing wind turbines, two dimensional (2-D) and three-dimensional (3-D) simulations are carried out to study the flow through a small scale Darrieus type H-rotor Vertical Axis Wind Turbine (VAWT). The flows predictions are used to determine the performance of the turbine. The turbine consists of 3-symmetrical NACA0022 blades. A number of simulations are performed for a range of approaching angles and wind speeds. This numerical study highlights the concerns with the self-starting capabilities of the present VAWT turbine. However results also indicate that self-starting capabilities of the turbine can be increased when the mounted angle of attack of the blades is increased. The 2-D simulations using the presented model can successfully be used at preliminary stage of turbine design to compare performance of the turbine for different design and operating parameters, whereas 3-D studies are preferred for the final design.

Small wind turbines are becoming a viable technology option to supply electricity to landowners. These systems provide energy security, product relatively no environmental harm, and in an appropriate setting can be quite cost-competitive with traditional electricity options. This paper is dealing with the methods how to overcome such inconvenience and with the analysis of characteristic and a field test with a prototype of the stand alone wind turbine was performed. The method applies to small systems, equipped with a coreless axial-flux permanent magnet(AFPM) generator in the turbine, a dc-dc converter and batteries. The analysis concentrates on the effect of the load on the power-wind speed curve of the turbine. The system is designed for direct driven, coupled with turbine and generator with a rated power of, 3kW.
In this work we present an advanced approach to the design of small wind turbine support steel structures. To this end we use an improved version of previously developed geometrically exact beam models. Namely, three different geometrically exact beam models are used, the first two are the Reissner and the Kirchhoff beam models implementing bi-linear hardening response and the third is the Reissner beam capable of also representing connections response. All models were validated in our previous research for a static response, and in this work they are extended to dynamic response. With these advanced models, we can perform analysis of four practical solutions for the installation of small wind turbines in new or existing buildings including effects of elastoplastic response to vibration problems. The numerical simulations confirm the robustness of numerical models in analyzing vibration problems and the crucial effects of elastoplastic response in avoiding resonance phenomena.
