  • Off-flavor materials (geosmin and 2-methylisoborneol (2-MIB)) produced by microorganisms, such as, cyanobacteria and actinomycetes, cause freshwater use problems worldwide. Due to unpleasant taste and odor, these microorganisms have raised issues especially in drinking water resources. Recently, there has been increasing concern about 2-MIB and causal cyanobacteria, namely, Pseudanabaena, in Korea. However, material production and ecological dynamics remain largely unexplored. This study reviewed the distribution of Pseudanabaena, its species diversity, and the research trend of molecular ecology related to 2-MIB production in Korea. Based on published literature, we found that seven species of Pseudanabaena which include P. mucicola, P. limnetica, P. redekei, P. catenata, P. galeata, P. yagii, and P. cinerea appeared to occur in a variety of Korean water systems. All of these Pseudanabaena species were found in the North-Han River system (Lakes Soyang, Chuncheon, Uiam, and Paldang). Some of these species were also detected in other watersheds, but the precise species diversity was not identified. Species belonging to the Pseudanabaena genus are hard to classify through general microscopic alpha taxonomy, due to their very small cell size and similar morphological characters. Moreover, the potential of 2-MIB production cannot be detected by microscopic observation. Combining molecular ecological techniques, such as, environmental genomic materials (eDNA, eRNA) analyses to conventional methods could be useful to better understand the off-flavor material production and dynamics, thereby providing more efficient management strategies of freshwater systems.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the applicability of Single Linear Reservoir (SLR) model for runoff computations of small river basins in Korea. In the existing watershed flood routing methods the storage coefficient(K), which is the dominant parameter in the model, has been proposed to be computed in terms of the wqtershed characteristics. However, in the prsent study, the rainfall characteristics in addition to the watershed characteristics were taken into account in the multiple regression analysis for more accurate estimation of storage coefficient. The parameters finally adopted for the regressions were the drainge are, mean stream slope of the watershed, and the duration and total dffective amount of rainfalls. To verify the applicability of SLR model the computed results by SLR model with K determined by the regression equation were compared with the observed gydrographs, and also with those by other runoff computation methods; namely, the Clark method, nakayasu's synthetic unit hydrograph method and Nash model. The results showed that the present zSLR model gave the best results among these methods in the case of small river basins, but for the whatersheds with significant draingage area the Clark method gave the best results. However, it was speculated that the SLR model could also be accurately applied for flood compuatation in large wagersheds provided that the regression for storage coefficients were made with the actual data obtained in the large river basins.

  • The main purpose of this work is the development of water quality level model using the data such as DO, EC, BOD, $COD_{Cr},\;NH_3-N,\;NO_3-N,\;PO_4-P$, T-N, T-P, and SS in 88 agricultural streams of the Han river watersheds. To grant water quality level for each parameters, it divided into 20% respectively in the order of water quality level. On the basis of the lowest water quality level, water quality of streams was assigned. As the result, number of stream corresponding to Level Ⅰ was 0, Level II was 1 stream, Level III was 3 streams, Level IV was 22 streams, and Level V was 62 streams. By standardized canonical discriminant function coefficient, $NO_3-N$ was the highest in 0.427 at the discriminant power. According to discriminant function for water quality level, it was equal to $-4.648+3.246{\times}[NO_3-N],\;-5.084+3.456{\times}[NO_3-N],\;-4.298+3.067{\times}[NO_3-N],\;and\;-7.369+4.396{\times}[NO_3-N]$ from Level II to Level V, respectively. As a result of test at real data of the Han river watersheds in 2007, the suitability of water quality level model was high to 88.4%.

  • In order to estimate the non-point pollution loads from each watersheds among 209 watersheds, the calibration and validation of HSPF model were carried out based on 2012 in 2013 years. In the case of flow rate, R2 of calibration and validation were 0.71~0.93 and 0.71~0.79, which were relatively good values. With the respect to calibration of water quality, % differences between measured and simulated values were 0.4 ~ 9.7 of DO, BOD 0.5 ~ 30.2% and TN 1.9~28.6% except for Hwhangkang B site. In case of validation, DO was 0.2 ~ 13.7%, BOD 1.3~23% and TN 0.5~24.3% excluding Hwhangkang B. However, since the concentration of TP was very small compared with other items, the range of difference was large as 0.8~55.3%. level. As the result of calculating annual accumulative BOD loads for each watershed, it was found that RCH 123 (Uryeong, Gyeongsangnamdo), RCH 121 (Jinju, Gyeongsangnamdo) and RCH 92 (Daegu) were the high ranked. The unit watersheds including various landuse type susch as forest and agricultural sites in mainstream areas have a higher BOD nonpoint pollution load than those in dam regions. However, the results of the annual cumulative loading of the basins for nutrients did not appear to be consistent with the BOD annual cumulative loading ranks. Other factors that represent watershed characteristics such as landslope and soiltypes, including landuse pattern, have been found to be closely related to nonpoint pollutant loads.

  • Many researches have been conducting on extracting geometry data and hydrologic parameters by using GIS technique. However, there is no clear standard on those methods yet. This study examines the changing pattern of runoff responses characteristics with applying lumped model on divided watershed. WMS is used in order to divide watershed and calculate hydrologic geometry data and parameters by GIS technique. HEC-1 is adopted as a hydrologic model to establish runoff responses. The basin is divided into small watersheds, which are approximately same size. This research conducted runoff response simulation of Pyoungchang River and Wichon River Basin. Especially, research was focused on what is the most appropriate level as a divined sub-basin, and tested the effect of size of sub-basin for the runoff response simulation. The results showed the size of sub-basin was not an important factor for the simulation results after a certain size. The results of this study can be applied as an appropriate guidance to select optimal simulation size of watershed for the lumped model in a specific watershed.

  • In this study, we developed the GIS-based Geomorpho-hydrological Watershed Modeling System($G^{2}WMS$) which could consider both nonlilear rainfall-runoff relationship based on Geomorpho-Climatic Unit Hydrograph(GCUH) as well as watershed system inducing river routing. The developed new model was calibrated at the gaged rainfall events at natural watersheds and previewed to apply at the ungaged mountain basins, such as Sulma basin for small mountain basin and Andong-Dam basin for large scale basin, compared single with partitioned basin in the observed unit hydrographs and rainfall-discharge events. Finally, at the large scale Andong dam basin, we concluded that partitioned basin cases which including th nonlinear GCUH and river routing methods were superior to single basins which including the traditional methods in rainfall-discharge simulation at the mountain basins.

  • The objective of this paper was to quantitatively analyze the effect of concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFO) NPS pollution on a small watershed water quality. Monitoring was conducted from March to October, 2013. Monthly flow rate and selected water quality at each monitoring site were measured during dry days. Rainy day monitoring also was conducted. Modeling was conducted to evaluate the effect of CAFO NPS pollution on the water quality at the watershed outlet. The highest and mean concentration of selected water quality indices during rainy days were higher than those in dry days in general. The highest TN concentration measured at the CAFP pollution discharge point was 237.831 mg/L. The results revealed that the CAFO NPS pollution sources could be equally blamed for the water quality degradation of the stream. However, the effect of the NPS pollution from CAFOs seemed not to be very influential to the watershed water quality at the outlet. SWAT modeling revealed that the TN load was reduced by 18.95 %, 23.39 % and 30.53 % at the watershed outlet if the TN load at the CAFO NPS pollution discharge point reduced by 20 %, 40 % and 60 %, respectively. It was thought that the natural attenuation processes played an important role. The modeling was based only on the assumption of the load reduction and not verified by the monitored data. Therefore, it was suggested that a long term monitoring studies for the evaluation of the impact of CAFO NPS pollution on the watershed water quality be conducted.

  • A monsoon season monitoring data from June to September, 2005 of a small forested watershed located at the upstream of the North Han River system in Korea was conducted to analyze the flow variations, the NPS pollutant concentrations, and the pollution load characteristics with respect to sampling frequencies. During the 4-month period, 1,423 mm or 79.2% of annual rainfall(1,797 mm) were occurred and more than 77%, 54% and 68% of annual T-N, $NO_3$-N and T-P loads discharged. Flow rate was continuously measured with automatic velocity and water level meters and 58 water quality samples were taken and analyzed. It was analyzed that the flow volume by random measurement varied very widely and ranged from 79% to 218% of that of continuous measurement. It was recommended that flow measurement of small forested watersheds should be continuously measured with automated flow meters to precisely measure flow rates. Flow-weighted mean concentrations of T-N, $NO_3$-N and T-P during the period were 2.114 mg/L, 0.836 mg/L, and 0.136 mg/L, respectively. T-N, $NO_3$-N and T-P loads were sensitive to the number of samples. And it was analyzed that in order to measure the pollution load within the error of 10% to the true load, the rate of sampling frequency should be higher than 89.7% of the sample numbers that were required to compute the true pollution load. If it is compared to selected foreign research results, about 10 water samples for each rainfall event were needed to compute the pollution load within 10% error. It is unlikely in Korea and recommended that thorough NPS pollution monitoring studies are required to develop the standard monitoring procedures for reliable NPS pollution quantification.

  • The relative contribution of between hillslope-flow and stream-flow by heterogeneity of drainage path are quantitatively assessed in the present study with GIUH model based on grid of GIS. Application watersheds are selected Pyeongchang, Bocheong and Wi river basin of IHP in Korea. The mean and variance of hillslope and stream length are estimated and analyzed in each watershed. And coupling with observation storm events, estimate hillslope and stream characteristic velocity which dynamic parameters of GIUH model. The mean and variance of distribution of travel time (i.e. IUH) calculate using estimated pass lengths and characteristic velocities. And the relative contributions are assessed by heterogeneity of drainage path. As a result, the effect of the variance that determine shape of IUH dominate with hillslope's effect in the small watershed area (within 500 $km^2$). Thus, GIUH in the small watershed area must consider hillslope-flow.
