With regard to a marine safety system, large vessels are generally loaded with INS (Integrated Navigation System). But although small and medium-sized ships are exposed to safety accidents in the sea, they are not carrying proper navigation devices and equipment. Accordingly, in order to develop INS for small and medium-sized ships(s-INS), an existing INS has newly been organized and integrated. Recently, more strict enforcement of INS-related regulations is expected at home and abroad, and the scope of their applications is being broadened. To keep up with this global trend that ships are being loaded with digital devices and equipment, this study has tried to develop s-INS, broadening its applications, and suggesting a future research plan.

This study aims to design a chief VDR(Voyage Data Recorder) system which is appropriate to small and medium sized vessels and also implement the data about marine communication devices, sensors, etc. to be stored or printed at the navigator when those data are connected to VDR through data communication between marine navigation and VDR which are based on serial communication or internet in order to prove efficiency of the marine navigator. Also, the design of VDR is intended to be small and light in order to expand to apply it to small and medium vessels, which enables to analyze causes of marine accidents precisely through its characteristic functions which are the same as those at "vehicle mounted black-box" (location of the car, image and voice storage) by which the same roles are played on land.

In the era of the fourth industrial revolution, Maritime Autonomous Surface Ship(MASS) are expected to emerge in the shipping industry. There has been much active research on collision avoidance systems regarding MASSs, but most of it has focused on merchant ships. A study of collision avoidance systems in fishing vessels is also essential, because Maritime Autonomous Surface Ships will encounter all type of vessels. In this study, the minimum passage distance between small-medium-sized fishing vessels and other vessels was investigated for the Ship's domain analysis. Based on the AIS data of Busan port and the adjacent area, the separation distances of fishing vessels were analyzed. The results indicated that as the speed of fishing vessels increased, the distance increased from 4L to 8L, and as length of the fishing vessels increased, the distance decreased from 10L to 6L. It is believed that the results of this study can be applied in the future to collision avoidance models for MASSs that reflect the domain of fishing vessels.

Majority of marine accidents that occur on fishing vessels are engine accidents. This comprises more than 26 % of the total annual fishing vessel marine accident cases. Large numbers of engine accidents happen in the cooling water system, which are mostly caused by negligence on regular check-up and repair. Notably, small-sized ships have higher engine accidents occurrence rate compared to medium-and large-sized ships. Based on the Report of the Korea Ship Safety Technology Authority, engine accident cases reached 3,032 out of the total 3,081 cases. This study researches on the differences between the small-sized ship pilot, an operator of a vessel engine of less than 200 tons, and a 6th level marine engineer, in terms of the relationship between management forms and what causes the marine accidents in association with the cooling water system. It also studies and analyzes the differences in frequency of the accident occurrence between the two groups. ${\chi}^2$ qualification was imposed through the SPSS statistical analysis program and it got qualified at the significance level of 5%. The research shall be utilized as one of the base line data for the reduction of marine accidents.
The technology of small and medium sized shipbuilding companies is lower relatively to major shipbuilding companies, and should be up-graded from the viewpoint of national economic development. In spite that hul form design is one of the most important elements with respect to shipbuilding technology, small and medium sized shipbuilding companies are incapable of developing hull form. Inorder to support technically such companies hull form development was carried out for G/T 999ton class tanker and D/W 4990ton class tanker which are the typical vessels operating in coastal area. The operating efficiency for the developed hull forms are impeoved by 30% for G/T 999ton class tanker and 24% for D/W 4990 tonclass tanker respectively. The results of hull form development including ship model test and performance analysis are presented in this paper.

The optimal shape modeling of core parts through 3D modeling and structural analysis for the development of small and medium-sized ships. The goal is to improve the efficient structure of the hydraulic system for controlling the rudder among the core steering parts in small and medium-sized ships. Through 3D modeling and structural analysis, a new concept of tiller parts and a double-acting hydraulic cylinder control system were proposed and operational structural stability was evaluated. Structural analysis of the three different tiller designs that can be replaceable onto existing fishing vessels was conducted to derive the final shapes. The emphasis was placed on evaluating the structural stability of the key drive components, the tiller, pin, and cylinder rodin the maximum torque condition of the hydraulic cylinder.

This research aims to develop a voyage performance monitoring system based on international standards. The developed system is equipped with an electronic navigational chart(ENC) that provides onshore and offshore information, as well as supports standardized interfaces with navigational equipment, such as a gyro compass, a differential global positioning system(DGPS), and an automatic identification system(AIS), to monitor the navigation route in real time. In addition, the proposed system adopts a car navigation system to provide a graphical user interface, an intuitive menu-driven configuration, and an easy guide for safer sea navigation. The system, interfaced with the gyro compass and DGPS, was verified without any data loss, and passed a test conducted under extreme conditions by the Korea Laboratory Accreditation Scheme(KOLAS). Finally, the system contributes to preventing collision of vessels and minimizing casualties by maximizing the convenience of mariners which a conventional system does not provide.
A traffic route is an area associated with high risk for accidents due to the flow of heavy traffic. Despite this concern, most studies related to traffic focus solely on traffic distribution. Therefore, there is a need for studies investigating the characteristics of ships' routes and traffic patterns. In this study, an investigation was carried out to analyze the traffic distribution and pattern in 3 major traffic routes for 3 days. For the purpose of the study, based on the prevailing traffic conditions, the route was divided into 10 gate lines. The ships passing through the lines were also classified into either small, medium and large. ND-K-S (normal distribution, kurtosis, and skewness) test was carried out for the traffic distribution at each gate line based on the information analyzed on each traffic route. The analysis of the results obtained from the ND test showed that large vessels have normal distribution, medium sized vessels have satisfied normal distribution in one-way route only while small sized vessels do not have normal distribution. According to the result obtained from the K-S test, normal traffic pattern shows a significant difference between two-way route and one-way route. Results obtained from the K test result shows that in the case of one-way route, vessels have a traffic pattern using a wide range on traffic route. Further analysis shows that vessels concentrate on one side of route in case of two-way route. Results obtained from the S test show that, in case of one-way route, vessels have a normal traffic pattern according to center line. However, analysis pf the results shows that vessels are shifted to the right side of route in case of two-way route. Despite these findings, it should be noted that this study was carried out in only 3 ports, therefore there is need for investigation to be carried out in various routes and conditions in future studies.

Marine accidents caused by ships have brought about economic and social losses as well as human casualties. Most of these accidents are caused by small and medium-sized ships and are due to their poor conditions and insufficient equipment compared with larger vessels. Measures are quickly needed to improve the conditions. This paper discusses a video-integrated collision prediction and fall detection system to support the safe navigation of small- and medium-sized ships. The system predicts the collision of ships and detects falls by crew members using the CCTV, displays the analyzed integrated information using automatic identification system (AIS) messages, and provides alerts for the risks identified. The design consists of an object recognition algorithm, interface module, integrated display module, collision prediction and fall detection module, and an alarm management module. For the basic research, we implemented a deep learning algorithm to recognize the ship and crew from images, and an interface module to manage messages from AIS. To verify the implemented algorithm, we conducted tests using 120 images. Object recognition performance is calculated as mAP by comparing the pre-defined object with the object recognized through the algorithms. As results, the object recognition performance of the ship and the crew were approximately 50.44 mAP and 46.76 mAP each. The interface module showed that messages from the installed AIS were accurately converted according to the international standard. Therefore, we implemented an object recognition algorithm and interface module in the designed collision prediction and fall detection system and validated their usability with testing.

The purpose of this study is to improve the current vessel departure control regulations to prevent traffic congestion after the lifting of vessel departure controls due to restricted visibility. AIS data was collected to analyze the traffic volume of normal traffic flow and after departure control. A statistical test was conducted to confirm the difference in traffic volume at peak hours according to whether or not departure control was used. The results of the t-test showed that there was a significant difference in traffic volume among groups of less than 10,000 tons in gross tonnage. However, the Mann-Whitney test showed no difference in traffic volume regardless of vessel control. Small and medium-sized vessels of less than 10,000 tons after departure control increased in traffic volume by 142% over normal traffic, and it was concluded that traffic congestion resulted as these small and medium-sized vessels were departing at the same time as large vessels of more than 10,000 tons. In order to prevent vessel collision accidents due to traffic congestion, it is suggested that the navigability of vessels less than 160 m or less than 10,000 tons should be improved.
