The characteristics of activated sludge affecting the biodegradation of plastic materials under aerobic condition were studied using cellophane film as a model system. The activated sludges of site 3, which treat a mixture of domestic sewage and supernatant of septic tank, obtained from December 1993 to April 1994 showed similar biodegradation activities. Biodegradations for 28 days reached around 80%. Viable cell number of inoculums maintained at a level of 10$^{6}$~10$^{7}$ /ml. In this range, viable cell number showed no relationship with biodegradation activities. The activa- ted sludges of site 2, which treat a mixture of domestic sewage and anaerobic digest of nightsoil, obtained four times from April 1993 to April 1994 showed very different biodegradation activities ranged from 20% to 80% for 28 days. Inoculum size affects biodegradation significantly. One percent inoculum showed the best biodegradation among the inoculum sizes of 0.1, 1.0 and 10%. Ten percent inoculum revealed inhibitory effects on the biodegradation activity which can be greatly reduced by centrifugation and filtration. Filtration was better than centrifugation in reducing inhibitory effects.
Dewatering sludge using inorganic chemicals with polymer has been evaded for reuse on account of the risks of high heavy metals contained and soil acidification. Composting feasibility of coagulation & dewatering sludges produced from livestock waste treatment plant was investigated. The results of analysis prove that dewatering sludge is valuable matter with suitable elements for composting if high quality ferric chloride ($FeCl_3$) is used for coagulation & dewatering process. In pot-cultivation of harvestes, using effects of dewatering sludge improved with lime treatment was very effective. The results of pot-cultivation proved that harms of crops according to different acid tolerances were not detected. But it was not applied to crops with weak acid tolerance or greenhouse for free from gas damage. Also, Further studies and monitorings are necessary to use sludges because results of pot-cultivation were generated differently by characteristics of soil, nutrient demand of plants, mature degree of sludge, consecutive cultivation and etc.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of mechanical(ball-mill) solubilization of excess sludge especially focused on the TSS(total suspended solid) reduction during the conventional aerobic digestion of sewage sludges including primary and/or excess sludge, HRT was examined at the 10 days and 20 days. According to the results of this study, TSS removal efficiency of solubilized excess sludge was almost two times higher than that of non-solubilized excess sludge. And as the proportion of the primary sludge increased, TSS removal efficiency became worse because primary sludge rarely contained microbial cells which could be easily solubilized physically. It was also proved that by the application of proper solubilization techniques to the excess sludge, HRT for the aerobic digestion could be lessened(above 50%) dramatically keeping the same or better digestion performance. The fact that between primary and excess sludges, only the excess sludge is quite effective in the sludge solubilization and in it's reduction says that excess sludge releasing sources are key-point in the sludge cake reduction field as a source control.
Determination were performed for the presence of three common environmental endocrine disrupting compounds (EDC), namely nonylphenol (NP), octylphenol (OP), di (2-ethylhexyl)phthalate in sewage sludge from 67 wastes plants, using Soxhlet extraction and GC/MS-SIM. NP and DEHP were detected in almost every sludges but OP was not detected. The range and mean value for NP of all sludge samples were nd~593, $62{\mu}g/g$ dry and the two statistic values for DEHP of those were 13~4733, $1176{\mu}g/g$ dry respectively. DEHP content was 20 times greater than NP in sludges. Concentrations of NP and DEHP in sludge from individual area were increased as following order ; Jeolla South and North Province (Cheju) < Chungcheong South and North Province (Kwangwon) < Gyungsang South and North Province < Wide City < Kyunggi Province.
The combined SHARON (Single reactor system for High ammonium Removal Over Nitrite)-ANAMMOX (Anaerobic ammonium oxidation) reactor were operated in mesophilic condition ($35^{\circ}C$). In this study, microbial granulation and characteristics of SHARON and ANAMMOX sludges were investigated using settling test, Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Fluorescence In Situ Hybridization (FISH). In SHARON reactor, Aerobic granulation with diameter of 1.5~2.5 mm was accomplished but aerobic granulation was weaker than anaerobic granular sludge. Initial seed sludge of ANAMMOX reactor was used as attached media for biofilm growth. ANAMMOX sludge was more compact and rounder rather than seed sludge. Though ANAMMOX sludge has high activity, it has lower settling ability than the seed granule. The color of ANAMMOX sludge was changed from dark to redish brown granular with diameter of 1~2 mm. In FISH of ANAMMOX sludge, high fraction of Candidatus B. stuttgartiensis which paid great role of nitrogen conversion was detected. Also, FISH results reveals that ANAMMOX bacteria inhabit at inner parts near surface, having advantages in utilization of substrates and protection from oxygen inhibition.
Synthetic organic polyelectrolytes can be used to condition sludges to enhance their dewaterability. When conditioning biological sludges, the charge on the polymer has a significant impact on the effectiveness of the polymer as a conditioner. The objectives of this investigation were to determine the most effective type and dosage of polymer for conditioning digested sludge prior to dewatering, and to investigate the relationship between dewaterability and particle size. 3 types of digested sludge were used under the different digestion processes like anaerobic digestion, aerobic digestion and intermittent aerobic digestion. CST(capillary suction time), TTF(time-to-filter) and SRF(specific resistance to filtration) were tested as a dewaterability index and the number of particle distribution was analyzed using particle size analyzer. The results indicate that cationic polymer appears to be required for effective conditioning of these 3 types digested sludge and the optimal polymer dosage is about 0.6% of SS. CST and TTF are well correlated with mean particle diameter of which the dimension order is 1.7.
The objective of this study is to examine the subsitiution effect of the waste oyster shell powder as the conditioning agent in municipal wasterwater sludge dewatering process. Beacuse the oyster shells have a large amount(about 38% by weight) of alkaline minerals, such as calcium and magnesium, they are thought to have the potential as a good conditioning agent. In this study, the physico-chemical properties of powdered oyster shells (75${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ or 200 mesh) and the dewatering characteristics of municipal waste water sludge using powdered oyster shells and CaCO3 are investigated. The conclusions are as follows, 1. Oyster shell could produce calcium ions up to 14ppm at pH-7.0, and this represents that oyster shell is a potential properties as a good conditioner. 2. 100ml of wastewater sludges, conditioned with pretreated oyster shell, are dewatered to the level of 25% solid concentration. 3. Wasterwater sludges, conditioned with oyster shell and CaCO3 are dewatered to the level of 32% solid concentration. And this shows that two-stage combined conditioning process is desirable than the one-stage conditioning process.

The paper deals with the proper design of GGH(gas-gas heater) panel elements of desulfurization equipments in a thermoelectric power plant. When fossil fuels such as coal, petroleum et cetera are burnt to ashes, sulfur oxide compounds are produced, and calcareous sludges are deposited at GGH panel elements. In this case, operation of a power plant equipments is interrupted, and a tremendous economic loss comes into existence. One of the purposes of the paper is to find flow velocity distributions and regions of depositions when calcareous sludges pile up on the GGH panel elements through the fluid analysis. In the fluid analysis, flow velocity and position distributions of particles between GGH panel elements are demonstrated according to time variation for ammonia and calcium hydroxide particles.
The consumption of artificially crushed sands exceeds more than 30 percent of the domestic sand supply in South Korea, and its rate is still increasing. For the manufacture of crushed sand granites and granitic gneisses are preferred, fine fractions (i.e. sludge, particles finer than 63 microns) are removed by use of flocculation agents, and its amount occupy about 15 wt%. The sludges consist of quartz, feldspars, micas, chlorite/vermiculite, kaolinites, smectites and occasionally calcite. Among the clay minerals micas are usually predominant, and $14{\AA}$ minerals, kaolinites and smectites are rather scarce. Jurassic granites usually contain more kaolinites and smectites than those of Cretaceous to Tertiary granites, probably due to longer geologic ages. On the other hand, sludge from Precambrian gneiss does not contain kaolinites and smectites. Chemical analyses for the granites and their sludges show rather clear differences in most of major chemical components. Except for $SiO_2,\;Na_2O\;and\;K_2O$, all other components represent rather clear increase. Decrease of $SiO_2$ content is attributed to the relative decrease of quartz in the sludges. And the $Na_2O decrease is caused by a relatively stronger weathering property of albite compared to Ca plagioclase. The $K_2O$ content shows rather small differences throughout the whole samples. The increases of $Al_2O_3$ and other major components resulted from weathering processes and most of colored components are also concentrated in the sludges. Particle size analyses reveal that the sludges are categorized as sandy loams in a sand-silt-clay triangular diagram. The sludge is now classified as industrial waste because of its impermeability, and this result was also confirmed by rather higher hydraulic conductivities. For the environmental problems, and accomplishing effective sand manufacture, more fresh rocks with little weathering products must be chosen.

The aims of this study is to improve physical properties of the sewage sludge and the process sludge generated in the leachate treatment by mixing the dry fuel, to develop the neutral solidifing agents that reduce oder, and to recycle the sewage and the process sludges as landfill cover materials. The mixing ratio (W/W) of sludges and dry fuel was appropriate at about 1:1, and the mixed materials were shown to be homogeneous at that ratio. We could know that when the sludges were mixed with dry fuel, moisture contents and viscosities are reduced, and air passages are formed between particles and particles. The various mixing tests and odor tests showed that the neutral solidifing agent was effective for the odor reduction. The main ingredient of the solidifing agent is the ash of sewage sludge, enabling it competitive in waste recycling and production costs. The landfill cover, using developed neutral solidification agent, improved physical properties to satisfy the quality standards and to increase the compressive strength. It also proved to reduce the value of complex oder and the usage of solidification agent to 1/3 (3,000 to 1,000) and to 1/8 (50% to 6%), respectively, from the comparative study with alkaline solidified landfill cover. Further research is under way to prove that this can be mixed with general soil to be used as a soil improvement agent for plant cultivation.
