Charicteristics of piggery waste and treatment processing sludges for reuse were investigated. If it was thoroughly regulated in disinfectants, antibiotic substances and heavy metals, raw piggery waste can be gratified in criteria for fermentative compost (liquid) for flowers cultivation. Also, Because it is satisfied with various criteria of heavy metals and fertilizer contents for reuse except water content, primary pre-treatment sludge is very good material for composting. If provated goods on heavy metals are used in coagulation & dewatering process, coagulation & dewatering sludges are suitable for criteria of special waste regulation and by-product compost. This study proves that, if they are accomplished with suitable composting and mature process, piggery waste and processing sludges are free from microbiological problems as well as criteria of composting.

Changes in pH, EC and water soluble cation and anion of the bed material in the rearing box of earthworms were investigated while sewage sludges or night soil sludge were cumulatively supplied to the 15 grams of initial earthworm population in the rearing box. Initial biochemical properties of sludges such as pH, EC, V.S. and water content were at the edible levels for earthworm. However, as the cumulative amount of sludges supplied to the earthworms were increased, pH of bed material in the rearing box was lowered and EC was increased, which meant that salt contents of bed material in the rearing box had been accumulated. Water soluble cations and anions were also accumulated in the bed material of the rearing box. Accumulation rates of ${NO_3}^-$ were especially prominent. Consequently, feeding rates of earthworm populations were reduced to nearly zero and earthworm populations finally died.
Among the disposal techniques of inorganic wastewater sludges from industries most of sludges were dealed with buring underground inefficiently. But we have tried to recycle the resources that exhausted inorganic sludges were properly blended to certain ratioes to make lightweight aggregate, that means manufacturing of it can be possible through blending of various components, drying, sintering, cooling and crushing to certain sizes that are needed by consumers. As disposal method of inorganic wastewater sludge is changed to environmentally fraternative method, this method could be very useful to make lightweight aggregates for decoration of building and the other so many purposes of those usages. That could be economically useful due to expected income for buring costs of ordinary disposal method form industries and sales income after manufacturing it. The second important profit is saving foreign currency from purchasing self-developed lightweight aggregate insteas of importing expensive foreign product. This product will be also very impressive to user because of the fraternative lightweight to be composed of apatite structure that is important part of human body.
To obtain the preliminary design data for combustion of paper sludges, decomposition characteristics and combustion kinetics of paper sludges reactor have been determined in a TGA reactor. Also, the combustion characteristics of paper sludges have been determined in a fluidized bed reactor. The data obtained from the TGA reactor indicate that dewatering of paper sludge is terminated at temperature below 130${\circ}$C. With heating rate of 20${\circ}$C/min, combustion is terminated at temperature below 340${\circ}$C .The combustion rate is found to be first order with respect to temperature and oxygen concentration. Activation energies for paper wastes are found to be 570, 700, 2600, 4600 Kcal/mole, respectively. The calcination conversions were investigated with the operating temperature and residence time. In this investigation, it was found that calcination conversion was affected by the operating temperature and residence time. The optimum conditions of operating temperature and mean residence time were 850${\circ}$C and 6 minutes of respectively.

Single (0.005 M DTPA), sequential (six-step) and kinetic (0.05 M EDTA) extractions were performed to assess Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, and Zn mobilization and their potential ecological risks in Abuja (Nigeria) water (WTS) and wastewater (WWTS) treatment sludges. Total metal levels (mg/kg) in WTS and WWTS, respectively were: Cd(3.67 and 5.03), Cr(5.70 and 9.03), Cu(183.59 and 231.53), Ni(1.33 and 3.23), Pb(13.43 and 17.87), Zn(243.45 and 421.29). DTPA furnished metal extraction yields (%) in WTS and WWTS, respectively as: Cd(11 and 6), Cr (15 and 7), Cu(17 and 13), Ni(23 and 3), Pb(11 and 12), and Zn(37 and 33). The metals were associated with the soluble/exchangeable, carbonate, Mn/Fe-oxide, organic matter and residual forms to varying degrees. Kinetic extractions cumulatively leached metal concentrations akin to the mobilizable fractions extracted sequentially and the leaching data fitted well into the Elovich model. Metal mobilities were concordant for the three leaching procedures and varied in the order:WTS>WWTS. Calculated ecological risk indices suggested moderate and considerable metal toxicity in WTS and WWTS, respectively with Cd as the worst culprit. The findings may be useful in predicting heavy metals bioavailability and risks in the sludges to guide their disposal and use in land applications.
The dewaterability of a sludge can be characterized by two ways: the residual moisture content in the sludge cake after dewatering process, and the filtration of the sludge. Time to filter (TTF) represents filtration processes that are special cases of the flow through a solid matrix concept. TTF characterizes a resistance to filtration. The sludge resistance, in turn, can be subdivided into resistances associated with the solid phase and the liquid phase to evaluate the effect of each of the two phases on sludge dewaterability. In order to determine the dewatering characteristics of the water sludge samples, TTF and zeta potential were measured. For these studies cationic polymer was chosen for water sludge dewatering experiments. The zeta potential of thickener sludges neared from minus values to zero values till 4 days after sampling. The dewaterability of thickener sludges using cationic polymer was deteriorated according to the increase of detention time. As the detention time was increased from 4 to 10 days, the optimal dose of the polymer was increased from 4 to 8mg/L. Therefore, the optimal detention time plays an important part for the dewaterability of a sludge.
Physico-chemical properties of the activated sludges(Suyoung and Changlim treatment plant), such as SVI(sludge volume index), absorbance, specific surface area, and specific resistance using Buchener funnel test were investigated with changing anaerobic storage time. This experimental condition was found that it was possible to estimate a linear relationship between their parameters such as specific surface area specific resistance, and sludge volume index(SVI). The specific surface area and the specific resistance to filtration of the activated sludges of Suyoung and Changlim treatment plant were found as 123.6~136.6$m^2$/gDS and 41.5~44.9$m^2$/gDS(dry solid), and 1.09$\times$10$^{14}$ ~5.48$\times$10$_{14}$ m/kg and 1.05$\times$10$^{14}$ ~2.48$\times$10$^{14}$ m/kg, respectively. The results gave a good linear relationship between the specific surface area and the specific resistance, r=2.25$\times$10$^{12}$ s-8.10$\times$10$^{13}$ ($R^2$=0.8885) at Suyoung treatment plant and r=1.26$\times$10$^{13}$ s-4.75$\times$10$^{14}$ ($R^2$=0.8756) at Changlim treatment plant.
The submerged barrier, employed in a reactor, divided a reactor into sludge settling zone and mixing zone according to flow type. In spite of mixing in the mixing zone, the lower part of sludge settling zone than the top of barrier was in a steady flow due to the barrier, which prevented the turbulent flow, produced from the mixing zone, from being diffused into the sludge settling zone. Therefore, the sludges in the mixing zone flowed backward over the barrier into the upper part of the sludge settling zone by turbulent flow and settled down in the sludge settling zone by the force of gravity. When barrier/water level ratio was 0.5, most sludges almost did not settle down in tile sludge settling zone because the sludges were directly affected by the turbulent flow, generated from mixer in the mixing zone. At 0.63 of barrier/water level ratio, sludge in the middle part of sludge settling zone rocked from side to side weakly. And sludge in the lower part became piled up on the bottom over this ratio. After 10minutes of sludge settling, the lower part of sludge settling zone was over 5000mg/L of sludge concentration although intial sludge concentration was 2300mg/L. By using the submerged barrier and the flow types, it could transfer sludge from this to that.

We analyzed the physical and chemical properties such as proximate analysis, ultimate analysis, heating values, thermogravimetric analysis, and combustion test for the organic sludges generated from paper and beverage manufacturing industries in the industrial complex. The average water and combustible content of the organic sludges from paper and beverage manufacturing industries were 66.07% and 14.67%, 54.98% and 26.77%, respectively. From the ultimate analysis of the organic sludges, C, H, O, N, and S compositions were 21.75%, 3.42%, 32.70%, 0.63%, and 0.30%, respectively. For beverage manufacturing industries, C, H, O, N, and S compositions were 39.88%, 4.28%, 23.20%. 2.65%, and 0.35%, respectively. According to the results of investigating the lower heating values by Dulong's equation, 1 sludge(T company) was on the range of over 2,000 kcal/kg. This sludge could be directly applied to industries which try to use the energy by direct incineration. From the TGA test, the minimum combustion temperature of A company's sludge was about $700^{\circ}C$ for direct use for energy and that of 3 sludges(C, I, and T company) were at least over $800^{\circ}C$.

A study on combustion characteristic and evaluation of cost benefit were carried out using dried sewage sludge to evaluate co-combustion with coal in a coal-fired power plant. In the result of proximate analysis, sewage sludge has 78.09%, 79.65% of moisture content in A STP(Sewage Treatment Plant) and B STP, respectively. The dried sewage sludges show 0.12, 0.14 of fuel ratio value, respectively and over 30,000kcal/kg of combustible index. It means that the dried sewage sludges needs to reform from the results of fuel ratio and combustible index. As a results of the economical benefit evaluation of dried sewage sludge, about 73.4 million won through using the dried sewage sludges instead of coal and 56.4 million won through REC(Renewable Energy Certificate) cost were saved, respectively. On the other hand, it occurs 4.2 million won of additional cost related to ash disposal and 2.6 million won of investment/operation cost for co-combustion facility. In conclusion, co-combustion of dried sewage sludges with coal in a coal-fired power plant saves about 123 million won. However, it needs to consider for power supply to produce dried sewage sludges and opportunity cost for environmental pollution and so on to evaluate more reasonable benefit of co-combustion.
