  • The operating conditions of sludge disposal for sanitary paper manufacturing wastewater treatment plant were monitored on the basis of daily check sheets during the 3 years of operation. Generated wastes were mainly composed of 79% of sludge, 14% of ash, 5% of waste synthetic resin and 2% of etc. Maximum sludge was produced to 233 ton and the average was 113 ton daily, where the primary sludge occupied 85% and 15% for the secondary sludge. The concentration of coagulant for sludge dewatering was extremely exceeded and the additional experiment such as jar-test was required for the establishment of proper dosage. Presently, the generated sludges were partially treated outside and were also partly handled inside. In the future, most sludges will be expected to be treated to recycling material for the iron industry.

  • This research was conducted to evaluate the effect of moisture content on direct landfilling prohibition of organic sludge. Organic sludges with moisture content (Me) of 75 and 85% were filled in two lysimeters. The lysimeters were named as Exp.75 and Exp.85, respectively. LFG of 2,064 l was generated greatly for Exp.85, compared to 1,500 l for Exp.75. LFG generations in Exp.75 and Exp.85 were 64.1 l/kg and 157.1 l/kg as dry TS basis, and 113.6 l/kg and 266.2 l/kg as dry VS basis. Total $CH_4$ generation in LFG for Exp.85 was 1,238 l, while 1,050 l for Exp.75. $H_2S$ of $3{\sim}150$ ppmv was generated from Exp.85, which was 5 times higher than $2{\sim}30$ppmv from Exp.75. Leachate was not generated from Exp.75 during operation time. However, 420 ml of leachate was generated from Exp.85. From the results of gas generation, composition, odorous compounds, and leachate generation, landfilling of organic sludge with high MC was more harmful to the environment in spite of great LFG generation. However, direct landfilling of organic sludges without great difference of MC made a severe odor problem. Therefore, it was thought that current direct landfilling prohibition law for all organic sludge was appropriate.

  • The performance of Upflow Anaerobic Sludge Blanket(UASB) reactor for treatment of corn starch wastewater was investigated using continuous and batch experiment. Results showed that the corn starch wastewater had different characteristics in terms of biodegradability and methane potential, depending on the manufacturing precess. COD removal efficiencies were maintained over 70% up to the loading rate of 3.2 kg $COD/m^3{\cdot}day$ and the maximum gas production rate was about 55 l/day, equivalent to 3.5 l/day per liter of reactor volume, at the loading rate of 8.4 kg $COD/m^3{\cdot}day$. In the anaerobic serum bottle test(SBT) carried out along with continuous operation, the sludge activity was found to increase from 0.03 to 0.53 g $COD-CH_4/g\;VSS{\cdot}day$ as granular sludges were developed in 130 days operation. SBT gave valuable informations on the characteristics of wastewaters to be treated as well as on the sludge activity. The overall morphological characteristics of granular sludges cultivated on corn starch wastewaters were similar to those cultivated on various organic industrial wastewaters such as distillery and sugar.

  • The objective of this study is to develop a systematic purification plant using the metabolism of aerobic microorganisms. This system is subsequently aerated and continuously removes suspended solids and settling sludges caused by aerating pressure at the bottom of a lower pipe (i.e., Continuous Removal of Suspended solids and Settling sludges, CRSS). The CRSS plants are brought out by introducing fine air bubbles into the liquid phase of a lower pipe in the bio-reactor. These plant uses aeration pipe, with multiple inlets to sweep the floor of bio-reactor tank, instead of the conventional scraper mechanisms. The principal advantage of this system is that it can continuously remove very small or light particles that settles completely within a short time. Once the particles have been floated to the surface, they can be moved into the pipe and collected in the settling tank by sequently aerated pressure. The experimental results shows that about 99.0% of the biochemical oxygen demand(BOD), 99.3% of the suspended solid(SS), 92.3% of the total nitrogen(T-N), 99.0% of the turbidity(TU), 100% of the total coliform(TC)and ammonia was respectively removed during aerobic digestion for 9 days. These result indicates that the CRS S plants are very effective for reduction and deodorization of swine wastewater contaminants, and the efflux from CRS S can either be discharged in the river or used as nutrient solution of formulation for plant growth factories. The developed CRSS plant proved to be flexible and it can simply be adapted to any type of biological waste treatment problem.roblem.

  • To study the possibility of agricultural utilization of the municipal sewage and the industrial wastewater sludges, the chemical properties of soil, the growth response of corn plant and uptake of inorganic nutrients in plant tissues were investigated by application of the composts made of the sludges to the pots at the rate of 2,000kg/10a. The contents of organic matter, T-N, $P_2O_5$ and K in soil were increased by application of the composts. Each heavy metals contents in soil were increased very slightly by application of the composts. The fresh weights of corn plant were increased with $9{\sim}19%\;and\;60{\sim}79%$ at the plot of compost and NPK+composts in comparing with the plot of NPK, respectively. Uptake of N, $P_2O_5,\;K_2O$, CaO and MgO in stem and leaf of corn plant were increased by applications of the composts.

  • The objectives of this paper are to study the use of geotextile tribes for dewatering high water content sludges and sediments and to evaluate their feasibility and affecting fsctors. To accomplish these objectives, pressure filtration tests were conducted on woven geotextile (Geotex$\circledR$ 46T and 1212T) fir high water content materials with a modified experimental apparatus. Test results indicate that 1) the filter cake formed on the inside of the geotextile tube is the major contributor to the retention of fine particles, but also causes a decrease in permeability, 2) controlling the formation of the filter cake and thus achieving a balance between soil retention and permeability is vital to a successful project, and 3) geotextiles, sludge properties, and filtration pressures have some effects on the dewatering efficiency and dewatering rate.

  • The purposes of this paper are to study the use possibility of geotextile tubes for dewatering of high water content sludges and sediments and to evaluate affecting factors on dewatering. To do this, pressure filtration tests are conducted on four high water content materials with two geotextiles under two filtration pressures. Based on the test results, although woven geotextile tubes are not satisfied the soil retention criteria used in filter design commonly, a great portion of fines are retained by filter cake formation on geotextile tube's upstream side, but also after formation of filter cake, the permeability drops sharply. Higher filtration pressure tends to increase dewatering rate, but has very little effect on filtration efficiency. Dewatering capacity is affected by several factors which are related to the geotextile, but the property of sludge appears to be the dominant control factor for dewatering efficiency.

  • London Convention on the prevention of marine pollution by dumping of wastes and other matter prohibits the deliberate disposal of paper mill sludges at sea. In order to explore the alternative plan on the prohibition of sludge disposal at sea, the biodegradable seedling pot was developed by mixing the sludge with old newspaper (ONP) in appropriate mixing ratios. The C/N ratio of the mixed sludge was below 20, leading to rapid deterioration of the organic matters composing the seedling pot. The increased ONP contents in the seedling pot resulted in the increase of pot thickness and thereafter in the decrease of pot density. Cellulose fibers in ONP promoted water absorption of the pot but AKD addition helped the seedling pot to repel water during raising seedling. Breaking length and burst strength of the seedling pot were improved by addition of wet strength additives but air permeability was a little diminished. Biodegradable rate of the seedling pot in a soil was accelerated by the attack of soil microbes at the beginning, and finally the pot was completely degraded in 150 days in a soil.

  • Swage sludge cakes produced from domestic wastewater treatment plants were collected from 21 different sites throughout Korea, and chemical properties of the sludge samples were determined. Inorganic nutrient contents did not indicate great differences among swage sludges from each sites, whereas the toxic heavy metal contents differed greatly. T-N, $NH_4{^+}-N$ and $NO_3{^-}-N$ contents from 21 sites sludges ranged 2.3-6.0, 291-4284, $1.4-58.8mg\;kg^{-1}$, respectively. Heavy metal (Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn) contents ranged 2.86-58.22, 144.0-5417.3, N.D.-943.5, and $N.D.-8,083mg\;kg^{-1}$, respectively. One of the sludges was treated to soils at rates of 12.5, 25, 50. and 100, $Mg\;ha^{-1}$ and incubated for 12 weeks to determine nitrogen materialization rate. Ammoniun nitrogen content decreased sharply at higher rates of sludge treatment up to 8 weeks after treatment and did not change much, while $NO_3{^-}$ increased at all treatment levels. The net amount of mineralized N of sludge treatment rates (12.5, 25, 50, and $100Mg\;ha^{-1}$) during 12weeks incubation were 189.0, 277.2, 303.8 and $376.6mg\;kg^{-1}$.
