COMPARATIVE STUDY ON DEWATERING SLUDGE WITH SOLAR DRYING AND SIPHON METHODS

  • A large quantity of purified water sludge is generated in modern cities around the world. Dewatering is essential to reduce the volumes transported off-site for disposal. Traditionally employed methods such as solar drying methods are time-consuming. There are urgent demands for developing alternatives to dewater the sludge in a less time-consuming manner. In this paper, siphon method is proposed to dewater the high-water-content sludge with plastic drainage plate installed horizontally. A group of comparative tests are conducted to preliminarily investigate the dewatering behavior of the purified water sludge with siphon and solar drying methods, respectively. On the basis of the test results, the availability and effectiveness of the new method is verified. It may provide an innovative solution to treat the purified water sludge more effectively.

하수 슬러지 건조장치 운전시 하수슬러지 함수율 및 조성 분석연구 (The study of sewage sludge moisture content and composition analysis for sewage sludge dryer)

  • 본 연구에서는 A 지역의 하수슬러지 건조장치가 설치되기 전과 후 탈수슬러지의 조성 및 성상, 중금속함유량 등을 측정 및 조사 분석을 하였다. 분석결과 건조로 설치전보다 약 95.7%의 제거효율을 보였으며, 설계값으로 1차건조로 35%, 2차건조로 10% 함수율을 제거하지만, 측정해본결과 1차건조로 20.8%, 리본 3.3%로 실제 운전효과가 더 좋은 것으로 나타났다. 중금속 함유량은 건조장치 설치 전 Cu : 352~614ppm, Hg : 1.3~1.44ppm, Cd : 1.1~1.86ppm, Pb : 17.25~ 28.93 ppm, As : 1ppm 이고 설치 후 Cu : 340~350 ppm, Hg : 0 ppm, Cd : 0~0.021 ppm, Pb : 0 ppm, As : 0~0.043 ppm으로 건조장치설치 전과 후 모두 법정 기준치에 초과하지 않음을 확인하였다. 또한 건조장치를 통과한 하수슬러지는 평균적으로 ${\frac{1}{4}}$의 건조슬러지가 발생하였다.

  • Although the specific resistance to filtration is the most frequently employed means for characterizing dewaterability of a sludge, it presently is not possible to design nor to prediet performance of dewatering facilities using traditional linearized parabolic filtration equation, that is, the specific resistance model because of theoretical and practical inadequacies of the concept. Limitations of the specific resistance model reflect the need to examine fundamental sludge properties and filtration behaviors affecting dewaterability. From this study, two major limitations of the specific resistance model were noted. First, specific resistance values are very dependent on the sludge concentration because of the variations of particle size distribution and cake clogging to occur when surface area mean diameter is less than $25{\mu}m$ for activated sludge, $18{\mu}m$ for water treatment plant sludge. Second, nonparabolic filtration behavior can result from cake clogging, caused by the migration of fine particles into the cake pores, accelated by skin effect with highly compressible sludges.

개량된 이탄과 유기성 슬러지를 이용한 유류오염토양 분해제 개발 (Development of Degradation Agent for Oil Contaminated Soil using Modified Peat Moss and Organic Sludge)

  • Oil degradation agent was developed with organic sludge and modified peat moss (MPM) to recover oil contaminated soil. Waste sludge discharged from wastewater treatment plant of chemical plant in Ulsan National Industrial Park was used as organic sludge, and MPM was purchased. Organic sludge was adequate to use as growth medium for microorganism, the surface of MPM had porous structure which could enhance the cultivation condition of oil degradation microorganisms. Water contents and TPH variation with time were observed to investigate the degradation capacity of developed degradation agent. Water contents were rapidly decreased with higher contents of MPM, however, in case of TPH, high MPM content decreased the degradation capacity. Therefore, it was recommended that the content of MPM was controlled to below 10% in degradation agent as mixing organic sludge with MPM.

전기분해를 이용한 하수 슬러지 감량 (Volume Reduction of Waste Water Sludge using Electrolysis)

  • In this research, volume reduction of activated sludge using electrolysis was studied to find an optimum condition using lab scale experiments. Wasted sludge was treated by electrolysis with controlling current density, chloride concentration, electrode distance, and reaction time. Volume of return sludge was reduced by 9.79% in average while maximum was 16.7%. Sludge volume reduction efficiency was affected by current density and reaction time. It was reversely proportional to the electrode distance. Especially current density was effective on the system performance significantly. Electric conductivity, salinity and COD were increased by electrolysis implying sludge disintegrated and converted to COD in part. An empirical equation for total solid removal efficiency by electrolysis was proposed by multiple linear regression analysis as: $TS_{rem}$(%) = 5.534 ${\times}$ current density (A/l) + 0.178 ${\times}$ reaction time (m) + 2.758.

전해부상을 이용한 활성슬러지의 농축효율 향상 (Improvement of the Thickening Characteristics of Activated Sludge by Electroflotation (EF))

  • The performances of electroflotation (EF) on the thickening of activated sludge were investigated using laboratory scale batch flotation reactors. Four activated sludges including bulking sludges were tested. After 30minutes of EF operation, 57-84 % of sludge volume reduction could be achieved by EF, while only about 1.5-14% could be obtained by gravity thickening for the same period. After thickening the effluent water quality in terms of TCOD, SS, and turbidity was improved by EF operation for all sludge samples. It is induced that the air bubbles entrapped in the thickened sludge play a key role in the observed improvement of sludge thickening and effluent quality.

탄화 정수 슬러지를 이용한 수중의 납과 카드뮴 흡착에 관한 연구 (Study on Adsorption of Pb and Cd in Water Using Carbonized Water Treatment Sludge)

  • 본 연구에서, 400도에서 탄화시킨 정수 슬러지를 수중의 납과 카드뮴의 제거를 위한 흡착제로서 시험하였다. 탄화된 슬러지는 열중량 분석, 주사 전자 현미경, X-선 형광분광기, 표면적 분석에 의해 특성화 하였다. 탄화 슬러지는 정수 슬러지 자체보다도 대단히 높은 비표면적과 총 세공부피를 나타내었다. 회분식 흡착 과정에서 탄화 슬러지는 카드뮴보다는 납에 대하여 더 나은 흡착성능을 보였으며, 실험에서 행한 농도에서 90~98%의 흡착 능력을 달성하였다. 흡착의 평형 데이터는 Freundlich와 Langmuir와 흡착등온선 모델을 이용하여 평가하였고, Freundlich와 Langmuir 흡착 등온선 둘 다 0.95보다 큰 상관계수($R^2$) 값을 나타내었다. 연구의 결과들은 열처리 된 탄화 정수 슬러지가 수중으로부터 납과 카드뮴을 제거하는데 효율적인 흡착제로 사용될 수 있다는 것을 보였다.

정수장 배출수 처리를 위한 Crossflow 관형막 여과 공정의 운전 적용에 관한 연구 (A Study about Applicability of Treatment for Water Treatment Residual Sludge Using Crossflow Tubular Membrane System)

  • Many other countries have investigated the residual sludge treatment process to save the existing water resource and produce the high suspended solid concentration sludge. There are various methods for concentrating residual sludge, but the membrane system has received the most interest for its efficiency. The objective of this study was to evaluate the application of membrane filtration system for the residual sludge treatment. The experiment equipment was composed of Lab scale Crossflow tubular membrane filtration system. Generally, crossflow operation mode demands high electric cost mainly for the pump energy. So to cut off electric cost, very low Crossflow velocity was used in this experiment. Results confirmed that suspended solid concentration of residual sludge could be concentrated to 57,000mg/L in low Crossflow velocity tubular membrane system,. This concentration can be directly injected into the dehydrator. Based on the results, we know that the Crossflow tubular membrane system should be replaced conventional residual sludge treatment system.

정수장(淨水場) 슬러지의 매립장(埋立場) 복토재(覆土材)로의 활용(活用)에 관(關)한 연구(硏究) (The Use of Water Treatment Sludge as a Landfill Cover Material)

  • Dewatered sludge of 400,000t/y from water treatment plants in Korea is being disposed through landfill and ocean dumping. However, the disposal is posing more and more serious environmental problems at the same time not only because of landfill site shortage in municipal suburbs, but because of the concern it will contaminate the oceans. In this study, the research on utilizing the sludge dried by flash dryer as covering soil in the landfill sites was carried out to solve these problems on environmental affinity. Both dewatered and dried sludge were exposed to the natural condition and observed according to the atmospheric changes. An experiment of soil engineering characteristics of the dried sludge and tests on mixed sludge(silty sandy soil : dried sludge = 10:90 ~ 30:70) such as particle size distribution, liquid and plastic limit, moisture content, specific gravity and compaction test were carried out. According to the compaction test, the compaction was confirmed as the optimum water content ratio was observed in the condition of SM-silty sand of particle size distribution, NP of liquid and plastic limit, 101.4% of moisture content, 2.04~2.12 of specific gravity. The results showed that dried sludges mixed with at least 30% of natural soil could be used as daily covering soil in the landfill sites.

생물반응공정에 대한 고액분리조로서 부상공정의 적용성 평가 (An assessment on feasibility of flotation as a secondary clarifier of an activated sludge process)

  • An experimental study was carried out to evaluate the potential of flotation process for the secondary clarifier of an activated sludge process. Flotation techniques, applied in this study, include electrofloation (EF) which generated fine bubbles smaller than $35{\mu}m$ in average and diffuser flotation (DF) which generated fine bubbles smaller than $55{\mu}m$ in average. The batch experiments were done with activated sludge displaying various characteristics. It was shown that the efficiency of solids/liquid separation was reduced as the diluted sludge volume index ($DSVI_{30}$) of activated sludge increased. The dependency, however, gradually decreased as the gas to solids (G/S) ratio increased. Thickening efficiency of EF was more than 2~10 times and DF process was more than 1.5~5 times as compared with gravity sedimentation (GS). Stable sludge blanket was maintained regardless of sludge settleability when the G/S ratio was 0.019 in the EF. On the other hand, Serious deterioration in the sludge blanket was observed in the DF depends on G/S ratio and sludge settleability. And For EF and DF, the suspended solids concentration of effluent was not nearly influenced on settleability of activated sludge and more clear than GS. A biological nutrient removal (BNR) process, combined with EF as a secondary clarifier was operated for three months. The mean MLSS (mixed liquid suspended solids) concentration in the reactor and mean solids concentration of return sludge were estimated to be 5,340 mg/L and 16,770 mg/L, respectively. The water quality of effluent was considerably stable and low value was accomplished, that was, standard suspended solids concentration $0.07{\pm}0.51mg/L$ and standard turbidity $1.44{\pm}0.56NTU$. The EF could be applicable for enhancement of efficiency of activated sludge system as well as improvement of the water quality of effluent.
