Low-cost model for pancreatojejunostomy simulation in minimally invasive pancreatoduodenectomy

  • Minimally invasive pancreatoduodenectomy (MIS PD) is a well reported technique with several advantages over conventional open pancreatoduodenectomy. In comparison to distal pancreatectomy, the adoption of MIS PD has been slow due to the technical challenges involved, particularly in the reconstruction phase of the pancreatojejunostomy (PJ) anastomosis. Hence, we introduce a lowcost model for PJ anastomosis simulation in MIS PD. We fashioned a model of a cut pancreas and limb of jejunum using economical and easily accessible materials comprising felt fabric and the modelling compound, Play-Doh. Surgeons can practice MIS PJ suturing using this model to help mount their individual learning curve for PJ creation. Our video demonstrates that this model can be utilized in simulation practice mimicking steps during live surgery. Our model is a cost-effective and easily replicable tool for surgeons looking to simulate MIS PJ creation in preparation for MIS PD.

Mode analysis and low-order dynamic modelling of the three-dimensional turbulent flow filed around a building

  • This study presents a mode analysis of 3D turbulent velocity data around a square-section building model to identify the dynamic system for Kármán-type vortex shedding. Proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) was first performed to extract the significant 3D modes. Magnitude-squared coherence was then applied to detect the phase consistency between the modes, which were roughly divided into three groups. Group 1 (modes 1-4) depicted the main vortex shedding on the wake of the building, with mode 2 being controlled by the inflow fluctuation. Group 2 exhibited complex wake vortexes and single-sided vortex phenomena, while Group 3 exhibited more complicated phenomena, including flow separation. Subsequently, a third-order polynomial regression model was used to fit the dynamics system of modes 1, 3, and 4, which revealed average trend of the state trajectory. The two limit cycles of the regression model depicted the two rotation directions of Kármán-type vortex. Furthermore, two characteristic periods were identified from the trajectory generated by the regression model, which indicates fast and slow motions of the wake vortex. This study provides valuable insights into 3D mode morphology and dynamics of Kármán-type vortex shedding that helps to improve design and efficiency of structures in turbulent flow.

비신호 횡단보도 환경 내 자율주행을 위한 종방향 거동 전략 연구 (Longitudinal Motion Planning Strategy for Autonomous Driving in Non-signalized Crosswalk)

  • This paper presents a method of longitudinal motion planning of autonomous vehicles to deal with the non-signalized crosswalk environment. Based on the traffic laws, vehicles should slow down when passing the non-signalized crosswalk to prepare for situations where a nearby pedestrian starts to cross. If a pedestrian is in the crossing phase, vehicles should stop in front of the stop-line and wait until the pedestrian finishes the crossing maneuver. To realize these behaviors in autonomous vehicles, the driving mode and corresponding driving strategy are determined when vehicles encounter the crosswalk. The driving mode is determined according to the behavioral status of the nearby pedestrian. Longitudinal motion for the stopping or passing maneuver is planned according to the determined driving mode. The proposed algorithm has been validated via autonomous driving tests with our test vehicle in a real world. The test results show that the proposed algorithm enables the test vehicle to follow the traffic laws and behave safely against crossing pedestrians in the non-signalized crosswalk.

  • Principles of a novel pulse growing method are described. The method realized in the crystal growing on a seed from melts under raw melt feeding provided a more reliable control of the crystallization process when producing large alkali halide crystals. The slow natural convection of the melt in the crucible at a constant melt level is intensified by rotating the crucible, while the crystal rotation favors a more symmetrical distribution of thermal stresses over the crystal cross-section. Optimum rotation parameters for the crucible and crystal have been determined. The spatial position oi the solid/liquid phase interface relatively to the melt surface, heaters and the crucible elements are considered. Basing on that consideration, a novel criterion is stated, that is, the immersion extent of the crystallization front (CF) convex toward the melt. When the crystal grows at a <> CF immersion, the raised CF may tear off from the melt partially or completely due to its weight. This results in avoid formation in the crystal. Experimental data on the radial crystal growth speed are discussed. This speed defines the formation of a gas phase layer at the crystal surface. The layer thickness il a function of time a temperature at specific values of pressure in the furnace and the free melt surface dimensions in the gap between the crystal and crucible wall. Analytical expressions have been derived for the impurity component mass transfer at the steady-state growth stage describing two independent processes, the impurity mass transfer along the <> path and its transit along the <> one. The heater (and thus the melt) temperature variation is inherent in any control system. It has been shown that when random temperature changes occur causing its lowering at a rate exceeding $0.5^{\circ}C/min$, a kind of the CF decoration by foreign impurities or by gas bubbles takes place. Short-term temperature changes at one heater or both result in local (i.e., at the front) redistribution of the preset axial growth speed.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the test-retest of plantar pressures using the F-Scan system over speeds and plantar regions. 6 healthy female subjects in 20's were recruited for the study. Plantar pressure measurements during locomotor activities can provide information concerning foot function, particularly if the timing and magnitude of the loading profile can be related to the location of specific foot structures such as the metatarsal heads. The Tekscan F-Scan system consists of a flexible, 0.18mm thick sole-shape having 1260 pressure sensors, the sensor insole was trimmed to fit the subjects' right. left shoes - sneakers shoes & dress shoes. It was calibrated by the known weight of the test subject standing on one foot. The Tekscan measurements show the insole pressure distribution as a function of the time. This finding has important implications for the development of plantar pressure test protocols where the function of the forefoot is important. According to the result of analysis it is as follows 1) Center of force trajectory in women's dress shoes display direct movement, compare with center of force trajectory in Sneaker shoes displays a little bit curved slow pronation movement. Sneaker shoes in forefoot part display very quick supination movement, therefore, this shoes effects negative effectiveness for ankle's stability Considering center of force trajectory analyzing the more center of force close straight line, the more movement can be quick movement for locomotion. For foot pressure distribution, center of force trajectory in locomotion is better to curved trajectory with pronation movement. So sneaker shoes style is good shoes considering center of pressure distribution trajectory compare with women's dress shoes. 2) Women's dress shoes increased peak pressure in medial, this is effected by high hill's height. The more increased women's dress shoes's height, the more women's peak pressure will increase, pronation can increase compare with before. Supination movement increase, this focused pressure in lateral, also, supination increased more. If the supination movement increased, foot pressure focused in lateral, therefore, it is appeared force distribution in gait direction. This is bad movement in foot's stability. 3) Women's dress shoes in landing phase displayed a long time, this is when women's dress shoes wear, gait movement is unbalance, so, landing phase displayed a long time. For compensation in gait, swing phase quick movement. 4) Women's dress shoes displayed peak pressure distribution in lateral of rearfoot part, Sneakers shoes displayed peak pressure distribution in medial of forefoot part. Its results has good impact absorption compare with women's dress shoes. In forefoot part, sneakers shoes has good propulsive force compare with women's dress shoes.

경량 모르터용 건식공정 바텀애시의 입형 개선 효과와 최적 입도 (Shape Improvement and Optimum Gradation of Dry Processed Bottom Ash for Lightweight Mortar)

  • 본 연구의 목적은 건식공정을 통해 생산된 바텀애시를 이용하여 친환경적이고 저렴한 경량콘크리트의 잔골재로 활용하는 것이다. 기존의 습식공정과 비교하여 건식공정은 물에 닿지 않고, 염분이 없으며, 다소 느린 공정으로 완전연소를 통해 미연소탄소성분이 거의 없다. 이러한 건식공정 바텀애시를 경량 모르터용 잔골재로서 타당성을 평가하기 위해 골재의 입형 개선 효과와 최적 입도분포의 두가지 단계로 나누어 실험을 실시하였다. 첫 번째 실험에서 추가적인 마쇄과정을 통해 얻어진 양호한 입형의 바텀애시는 유동성과 강도 측면에서 양호한 결과를 나타내었으며 다소간의 단위용적질량 증가를 보였다. 두 번째 실험에서 다양한 입도를 구성하여 실험을 실시하였고, 그 결과 표준입도에 맞추어진 입도에서 굳지 않은 상태 및 경화상태에서 양호한 성능을 나타내었다. 본 연구의 결과를 통해 차후 건식 공정을 통한 바텀애시의 활용방법이 확대되고, 바텀애시를 경량 잔골재로 활용함으로서 부가가치 상승에 기여할 것으로 예상된다.

대규모 발파자료를 이용한 한반도 남부 상부지각의 종파 속도 이방성 (P-wave Velocity Anisotropy in the Upper Crust of the Southern Korean Peninsula Using Seismic Signals from Large Explosions)

  • 한반도 지각속도 구조 규명을 위해 실시하고 있는 지각규모 탄성파 실험의 일환으로 한반도 지각구조 연구팀이 2004년도와 2008년도에 조사측선상의 각 4개소와 8개소에서 인공적으로 대규모 지진파 신호를 발생시켰으며, 이 지진파 신호들이 기상청 지진망의 고정관측소 지진계에 기록되었다. 43개 속도센서와 103개 가속도센서로 기록된 고정관측소 자료 중, 신호/잡음비가 양호한 진앙거리 120 km 이내의 156개 자료만을 대상으로 Pg 위상의 속도 이방성을 분석하였다. 상대고도보정은 KCRT-2004 자료분석을 통해 구한 지표부근 속도정보와 고정관측소와 측선상의 이동식 관측소 사이의 고도차이를 이용하여 구하였으며, -101.6 ${\sim}$ 105.3 ms의 범위를 갖는다. 부지효과를 제거하기 위한 관측소 잔여보정은 가용한 모든 방향의 발파자료를 대상으로, 고정관측소 주시와 이동관측소 주시의 차이를 발파점별로 평균한 값을 제거하는 방법으로 구하였으며, -89.6 ${\sim}$ 192.2 ms 범위를 갖는다. 추가령 지구대와 옥천계 구조선 방향으로 나타나는 빠른 속도 이상대와 영덕과 울산 부근 높은 지열대의 느린 속도 이상대를 제외하면, Pg 위상으로 구한 한반도 남부의 상부지각속도는 전반적으로 등방성임을 지시한다.

Biochemical Characterization of the Dual Positional Specific Maize Lipoxygenase and the Dependence of Lagging and Initial Burst Phenomenon on pH, Substrate, and Detergent during Pre-steady State Kinetics

  • The wound-inducible lipoxygenase obtained from maize is one of the nontraditional lipoxygenases that possess dual positional specificity. In this paper, we provide our results on the determination and comparison of the kinetic constants of the maize lipoxygenase, with or without detergents in the steady state, and characterization of the dependence of the kinetic lag phase or initial burst, on pH, substrate, and detergent in the pre-steady state of the lipoxygenase reaction. The oxidation of linoleic acid showed a typical lag phase in the pre-steady state of the lipoxygenase reaction at pH 7.5 in the presence of 0.25% Tween-20 detergent. The reciprocal correlation between the induction period and the enzyme level indicated that this lag phenomenon was attributable to the slow oxidative activation of Fe (II) to Fe (III) at the active site of the enzyme as observed in other lipoxygenase reactions. Contrary to the lagging phenomenon observed at pH 7.5 in the presence of Tween-20, a unique initial burst was observed at pH 6.2 in the absence of detergents. To our knowledge, the initial burst in the oxidation of linoleic acid at pH 6.2 is the first observation in the lipoxygenase reaction. Kinetic constants (Km and kcat values) were largely dependent on the presence of detergent. An inverse correlation of the initial burst period with enzyme levels and interpretations on kinetic constants suggested that the observed initial burst in the oxidation of linoleic acid could be due to the availability of free fatty acids as substrates for binding with the lipoxygenase enzyme.

  • 1. Diluted chicken semen can be preserved at 2 to 5$^{\circ}C$ for 24 to 48 hr with resultant fertility of greater than 90% of that of fresh semen. Turkey semen can be preserved at 10 to 15$^{\circ}C$ for 6 to 24 hr and provide economical fertility. 2. Frozen chicken semen has given variable results; a 21 to 93% fertility ranges as compared to 92 to 94% expected with fresh semen. Highest fertility levels obtained with frozen turkey semen intravaginally inseminated have been 61 and 63% using DMSO and glycerol, respectively, as cryoprotectants. 3. The use of glycerol as a cryoprotectant reauires that its concentration in semen be reduced to less than 2% either by dialysis or centrifugation after thawing and before intravaginal insemination if optimal fertility is to be obtained. 4. The temperature at which cryoprotectants are added to semen and the time allowed for equilibration are important for subsequent fertility pre- and post-freezing. 5. The type of container used for packaging the semen, freeze or cooling rates, thaw rates and level of cryoprotectant all interact in affecting cell survival. 6. Plastic freeze straws as a packaging device for semen offers the following advantages: easy to handle, require minimal storage space, offer a wide range of freeze and thaw rates, and insemination can be made directly from them upon thawing. 7. Controlled slow cooling rates of 1 to 8$^{\circ}C$/min have thus far provided the best results for cooling chicken semen throught the transition phase change (liquid to solid) or critical temperature range of +5 to -20 or -35$^{\circ}C$. 8. Highest fertilities have been achieved with frozen chicken semen where a slow thaw rate (2。 to 5$^{\circ}C$) has been used regardless of the freeze rate. 9. To maintain a constant high level of fertility throughout a breeding season with frozen semen, a higher absolute number of spermatozoa must be inseminated (2 to 3 times as many) as compared to fresh semen since a, pp.oximately 50% are destroyed during processing and freezing. 10. The quality of semen may vary with season and age of the male. Such changes in sperm quality could be accentuated by storage effects. Thus, the correct number of spermatozoa may very well vary during the course of a breeding period. 11. As to time of insemination, it is best to avoid inseminating chicken hens within 1-2 hr after or 3-5 hr before oviposition; and turkey hens during or 7-10 hr before oviposition. 12. The physiological receptiveness of the oviduct at the time of insemination is a very important biological factor influencing fertility levels throughout the breeding season.

비선형광학재료 Potassium lithium niobate 단결정 육성 (Single crystal growth of potassium lithium niobate for nonlinear optics)

  • 레이저의 파장을 변환시키는 비선형광학 재료인 potassium lithium niobate(KLN) 단결정은 상온에서 정방형 tungsten-bronze 구조를 갖는 강유전체이다. 결정성장이 매우 어렵고 성장된 결정을 냉각하는 과정에 생기는 균열에 의해 고품질의 단결정을 얻기가 쉽지 않았다. 결정성장 도중에 생기는 용액의 증발에 의한 조성의 변화를 알아보고자 열중량 분석을 행하였는데 결정성장 온도보다 약 1$0^{\circ}C$ 정도 높은 $1000^{\circ}C$에서 휘발은 $1.46{\times}10^{-5}$g/ ($\textrm{cm}^2$hr)로 미량이었다. 백금판을 핵생성의 자리로 사용하고 온도에 요동을 주며 서냉을 하여 결정을 성장시키는 방법을 사용하여 좋은 품질의 비교적 대형인 1 cm 정도의 KLN 단결정을 성장시킬 수 있었다. 상전이 온도는 $490^{\circ}C$로 앞서 보고된 것보다 고온이었다. OH- 밴드에 의한 광학적 이방성이 IR 영역에서 존재하였다.
