In general, the most important problem in slope stability analysis is that there is no definite way to describe the natural three-dimensional Joint network. Therefore, the many approaches were tried to anlayze the slope stability. Numerical modeling approach is one of the branch to resolve the complexity of natural system. UDEC, FLAC, and SWEDGE are widely used commercial code for the purpose on stability analysis. For the purpose on the more appropriate application of these kind of code, however, three-dimensional distribution of joint network must be identified in more explicit way. Remaining problem is to definitely describe the three dimensional network of joint and bedding, but it is almost impossible in practical sense. Three dimensional joint generation method with random number generation and the results of generation to UDEC have been applied to settle the refered problems in field site. However, this approach also has a important problem, and it is that joint network is generated only once. This problem lead to the limitation on the application to field case, in practical sense. To get rid of this limitation, Monte Carlo Simulation is proposed in this study 1) statistical analysis of input values and definition of the applied system with statistical parameter, 2) instead of the consideration of generated network as a real system, generated system is just taken as one reliable system, 3) present the design parameters, through the statistical analysis of ouput values Results of this study are not only the probability of failure, but also area of failure block, shear strength, normal strength and failure pattern, and all of these results are described in statistical parameters. The results of this study, shear strength, failure area, pattern etc, can provide the direct basement on the design, cutoff angle, support pattern, support strength and etc.
Medium-scale levee experiments were performed to monitor the infiltration and failure of levee body by applying fiber optic temperature sensing. In this study, bio-polymer soil was spread in the levee slope to increase the strength and intensity. Therefore, the infiltration and failure by overflows were produced in a different way compared to general soil type of levees. This was also observed in the experiment data for temperature changes monitored by fiber-optic distributed temperature sensing system. Through the analysis of temperature changes at specific location by time, the location and initiation time for physical changes and infiltration in levee body could be identified based on temperature variation. In this experiment, the time of rapid changes in temperature was ahead in the inland slope rather than the forceland slope. It was corresponding to the levee failure sequence of first inland slope failure and then the forceland slope failure.
Studying slope stability is an important branch of civil engineering. In this way, engineers have employed machine learning models, due to their high efficiency in complex calculations. This paper examines the robustness of various novel optimization schemes, namely equilibrium optimizer (EO), Harris hawks optimization (HHO), water cycle algorithm (WCA), biogeography-based optimization (BBO), dragonfly algorithm (DA), grey wolf optimization (GWO), and teaching learning-based optimization (TLBO) for enhancing the performance of adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) in slope stability prediction. The hybrid models estimate the factor of safety (FS) of a cohesive soil-footing system. The role of these algorithms lies in finding the optimal parameters of the membership function in the fuzzy system. By examining the convergence proceeding of the proposed hybrids, the best population sizes are selected, and the corresponding results are compared to the typical ANFIS. Accuracy assessments via root mean square error, mean absolute error, mean absolute percentage error, and Pearson correlation coefficient showed that all models can reliably understand and reproduce the FS behavior. Moreover, applying the WCA, EO, GWO, and TLBO resulted in reducing both learning and prediction error of the ANFIS. Also, an efficiency comparison demonstrated the WCA-ANFIS as the most accurate hybrid, while the GWO-ANFIS was the fastest promising model. Overall, the findings of this research professed the suitability of improved intelligent models for practical slope stability evaluations.

In this study, adaptation of two-way shape memory effect of SMA wire to the actuator is examined . Therefore the SMA characteristics which are training, material properties, response time at different thermal cycling rates are tested. During training, permanent deformation is accumulated till a certain number of cycle and then saturated. The amow1t of two-way strain is unchangeable over all cycle and the slope of strain(or stress)-temperature curve is slower as the increase of applied stress. The rate effect is observed resulted from the thermal distribution which heating profile differs from cooling as thermal cycling time. Using the estimated SMA properties, an experimental test for the simple smart wing is performed.

In comparison with edge-emitting lasers(EELs), predicting the output power and slope efficiency of Vertical-Cavity Surface-Emitting Lasers(VCSELs) is very difficult due to the absorption loss in DBR layers. However, by using transfer matrix method(TMM), we've made possible to calculate such parameters of multi-layer structures like VCSELs. In this paper, we've calculated the threshold gain, threshold current and slope efficiency through the methodology based on TMM. Also TMM is the way of customizing the VCSEL structure for the desired threshold current and slope efficiency by changing the number of DBR mirror layers.

This paper presents a vision/LiDAR integrated navigation system that provides accurate relative navigation performance on a general ground surface, in GNSS-denied environments. The considered ground surface during flight is approximated as a piecewise continuous model, with flat and slope surface profiles. In its implementation, the presented system consists of a strapdown IMU, and an aided sensor block, consisting of a vision sensor and a LiDAR on a stabilized gimbal platform. Thus, two-dimensional optical flow vectors from the vision sensor, and range information from LiDAR to ground are used to overcome the performance limit of the tactical grade inertial navigation solution without GNSS signal. In filter realization, the INS error model is employed, with measurement vectors containing two-dimensional velocity errors, and one differenced altitude in the navigation frame. In computing the altitude difference, the ground slope angle is estimated in a novel way, through two bisectional LiDAR signals, with a practical assumption representing a general ground profile. Finally, the overall integrated system is implemented, based on the extended Kalman filter framework, and the performance is demonstrated through a simulation study, with an aircraft flight trajectory scenario.
This study used a single metal oxide semiconductor (MOS) sensor to classify the major odorous gases hydrogen sulfide ($H_2S$), ammonia ($NH_3$) and toluene ($C_6H_5CH_3$). In order to classify these odorous substances, the voltage on the MOS sensor heater was gradually reduced in 0.5 V steps 5.0 V to examine the changes to the response by the cooling effect on the sensor as the voltage decreased. The hydrogen sulfide gas showed the highest sensitivity compared to odorless air under approximately 2.5 V and the ammonia and toluene gases showed the highest sensitivity under approximately 5.0 V. In other words, the hydrogen sulfide gas reacted better in the low temperature range of the MOS sensor, and the ammonia and toluene gases reacted better in the high-temperature range. In order to analyze the response characteristics of the MOS sensor by temperature in a pattern, a two-dimensional (2D) x-y pattern analysis was introduced to clearly classify the hydrogen sulfide, ammonia, and toluene gases. The hydrogen sulfide gas was identified by a straight line with a slope of 1.73, whereas the ammonia gas had a slope of 0.05 and the toluene gas had a slope of 0.52. Therefore, the 2D x-y pattern analysis is suggested as a new way to classify these odorous substances.
The stability of the designed rock slope is analysed based on two kinds of shear strength model. Besides the deterministic analysis, a probabilistic approach on Monte Carlo simulation is proposed to deal with the uncertain characteristics of the discontinuity and the results obtained from two models are compared to each other. To carry out the research of characteristics of the discontinuity, BIPS, DOM Scanline survey data and direct shear test data are used, and chi-square test is used for determining the probability distribution function. The rock slope is evaluated to be stable in the deterministic analysis, but in the probabilistic analysis, the probability of failure is more than 5%, so, it is considered that the rock slope is unstable. In the shear strength models, the probability of the failure based on the Mohr-Coulomb model(linear model) is higher than that of the Barton model. It is supported by the fact that the Mohr-Coulomb model is more sensitive to block size than the Barton model. In fact, there is no reliable way to estimate the unit cohesion of the Mohr-Coulomb model except f3r back analysis and in the case of small block failure in the slope, Mohr-Coulomb model may excessively evaluate the factor of the safety. So, the Barton model of which parameters are easily acquired using the geological survey is more reasonable for the stability of the studied slope. Also, the selection of the proper shear strength model is an important factor for slope failure analysis.

Recently stereographic projection method has widely been adopted in Korea as a simple but effective way of anlalysing the rock slope stability at the preliminary stage of site investigation. In practice, however, not a few cases have been noted where the method. even with the aid of computer programme, was unproperly applied due to lack of experience in the process of collecting geological data, sorting them out and assessing the potential instability of rock block thereform. This paper will briefly describe basic principles of stereographic projection method and present several instances to discuss its merits and limitations when it is applied to the geological conditions of Korea.

Intensive rainfall causes frequent slope failures at the shallow depths of slopes. Because soil layers at shallow depths of slopes usually become dense, and its permeability and soil strength vary according to depth, forensic studies and stability analyses of shallow slope failure need to consider the depth-variant soil properties. In this study, the effect of depth-variant soil properties on surface failure of slopes during rain infiltration is investigated using numerical analysis. Three different cases considering depth-variant soil properties were conducted and the results were compared. For the analysis, undisturbed soils at three different depths were sampled at actual slope failure sites and the properties including strength and permeability characteristics at each depth were obtained. Stability analysis and seepage analysis were conducted using actual rainfall records. The comparison of the results shows that analysis could lead to an erroneous conclusion according to the way of considering depth-variant soil properties. The case in which depth-variant soil properties were considered predicted similar failure times and failure shapes with the actual failure. Therefore it is recommended that the depth-variant soil properties should be considered for the analysis of shallow slope failure during rain infiltration.
