  • Grateloupia turuturu is a red alga with a flat but firm slippery thallus. Throughout its lifetime, this alga experiences a wide range of environmental stresses in the intertidal rocky shores. The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of salinity and irradiance on the early developmental stages of G. turuturu tetrasporophytes. The released carpospores were cultivated at different salinities (S = 15, 25, and 35) and irradiances (50, 100, and 200 μmol photons m-2 s-1). Germination of carpospores and development of juvenile tetrasporophytes were observed every 5 days and recorded by a digital camera. Discoid crusts were formed at all conditions within 5 days. The discoid crusts at 200 μmol photons m-2 s-1 died within 20 days regardless the salinity. The discoid crusts at S = 35 also died at all irradiance conditions within 25 days. Except for those at S = 35 and 200 μmol photons m-2 s-1, the discoid crusts reached about 8,000-9,000 ㎛2 by day 20. Regardless of irradiance, the upright thalli formation rate from discoid crusts was 85 and 10% at S = 15 and S = 25, respectively. These results suggest that salinity and irradiance are important factors influencing early developmental stages of G. turuturu.

  • Objectives This study is designed to examine the relationship between healthy state (完實無病) of Sasang constitution and pulse wave (脈波). Methods The subjects were 100 patients who were diagnosed with Sasang constitution and underwent pulse analyzer test. The status of urination, defecation, perspiration, and digestion was classified as good, intermediate, and poor. The power, depth, speed, and roughness of pulse waves (脈波) were analyzed. Results Patients with poor digestion had relatively powerless pulse wave (無力脈). Soeumin patients had a higher rate of poor digestion compared to other constitutions. Soyangin patients had a higher rate of poor perspiration compared to other constitutions. Soyangin with poor defecation had relatively choppy pulse wave (澁脈), and poor perspiraton had relatively slippery (滑脈). Soeumin patients with poor digestion had relatively powerless pulse wave (無力脈). Conclusions The pulse wave of poor healthy state (完實無病) is an expression of a pathological syndromes (病證) caused by lack of or damage to healthy energy (保命之主). It was concluded that the pulse analyzer can be used to evaluate healthy state (完實無病).

  • The purpose of this study is 1) to clarify that the house is no long the safe place through the cases of the senior safety accidents and to argue the need for housing repair and 2) to present the minimum standards for housing repair by comparing the cases here as well as the abroad and to back up the standards with the current senior housing environment 300 people at least 60 years old living in Seoul$\cdot$Metropolitan area were interviewed using the structured questionnaire. As the result, the following conclusions were made: 1. There was high accident rates of the senior residents due to physical deficits within the house, causing excessive medical cost and decreased housing satisfaction. This problem can be sufficiently prevented by housing repair which can not only solve the safety problem but also support self sufficient living for the senior residents. 2. Proper housing repair required the architectural know how as well as the expertise knowledge of the physical characteristics of the senior people. Therefore, it is essential to secure the professional (i.e., occupational therapist) who can analyze the needs of the senior residents and evaluate and/or predict the obstacles during repair. Furthermore, development and distribution of the standardized manual are also needed. 3. The minimum standard for housing repair could be approached in view of 'barrier-free' concept. First, the bumps should be removed, slippery prevented, and safety grab-bar installed for safety. Second, the entrance should be widened and the bathroom and kitchen restructured to support for the senior residents' self sufficiency. To make housing repair policy more efficient, the legal basis is required. It can be incorporated into the existing senior citizens 'Welfare Act' or the 'Senior Residents Medical Insurance' which will be effective starting in 2007.

  • Due to the mass production of housing in Korea, homogeneous current housing may fail to represent residents' preferences, especially for the elderly. The purpose of this study is to identify the preferred properties of consumers for accessible housing and to examine whether cluster analysis can identify groups of residents with similar accessible housing preferences. Using a conjoint method, prospective users can jointly consider all accessible attributes, with cost attributes suggested by this study. Four categories (accessibility, safety, convenience, cost), 7 attributes (clear width, level difference, installation of grab bars, installation of elevators: only for single house type, non slippery floor materials, safety alarms, service control devices, cost) and 2 levels for each attribute were chosen. A total of 374 questionnaires were collected through a questionnaire survey method. This study employed ratings-based Conjoint analysis and the respondents ranked each card, which consisted of a set of accessible housing attributes. The data were analyzed using SPSS 16.0. The findings of this study have identified 3-4 clusters for each housing sub market. Each cluster has a different combination of socio-demographic characteristics and residential characteristics, and showed the relative importance or preference values for each accessible attribute of the segmentation. For the single housing, one group of people strongly preferred installation of elevator. The results suggested that better customization of housing could be more appealing to the different clusters of residents, providing accessible housing with cost limitations.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the factors that make the bathroom experience an inconvenient one for stroke patients, including the use of basic materials to provide an effective and individualized bathroom environment. Method: The survey was conducted from May 20 to June 20, 2014 on 81 stroke patients. The questionnaire is composed of the following: general factors of respondents, degree of inconvenience of general bathroom usage, and inconvenient factors. The questions on inconvenient factors of bathroom usage are comprised of 20 questions in a 5-point Likert scale. Result: The degree of inconvenience of bathroom usage results showed that the group of patients using wheelchairs experience more inconvenience than the group of patients without wheelchairs. The inconvenient factors between two groups are shown to have significant differences in the door sill, the location of the mirror, the chair for showering, transferring to the bathtub, slippery floor, the location of cabinets, door width, shower space, the location of shower booth, and the safety handle on the wall and toilet (p<.05). Conclusion: The result of this research shows that the inconvenient factors in the bathroom experience stroke patients vary depending on the use of wheelchair. The result may be utilized as therapeutic basic materials provide an effective bathroom environment to stoke patients in future.

  • The purpose of this cross-sectional study was to explore fear of falling in relation to activity restriction of in the community dwelling elderly. Two hundred ninety-nine community dwelling elderly residing in Seoul and Kyonggi-do were interviewed using a structured questionnaire. The results were as follows : 1. Subjects were predominantly women$(70.6\%)$, an average 72.5 years old; the incidence of falls in last one year was $45.5\%$. 2. The highest level of fear found for activity in those who say they do engage and those who do not engage in the activity was 'going out when it is slippery '(m=2.53, 2.81) and 'reach for something over your head'(m=1.66, 2.60). Fear of falling scores were significant lower for those who say they do engage in eight kinds of activities (excluded activities of given were 'go to the store', 'take a tub bath', 'get out of bed') than for those who do not engage in the activities. 3. Among those who did not perform the activity, the three activities, when it is slippy(n=80), reaching overhead(n=70), and walk outside(n=59),were most often avoided because fear alone as well as for reasons in addition to fear. 4. The significant variables associated with fear of falling were female(p=0.0000), 1 educational status(p=0.000l), poor economic condition(p=0.0007), and experience of falls in last one year(p=0.0007). Fear of falling is common in the community dwelling elderly in Korea and is associated with several demographical variables. Therefore, to prevent falls and to reduce fear of falling, further study for development of education program for the elderly is needed.

  • This research intends to discover the housing conditions of the elderly in rural area in South Korea, and identify measures to improve the conditions for an independent and safe life of seniors. This research conducted both survey research and experimental study. The survey interviewed 1,000 elderly people over 65 in farming areas across the country based on random selection from Census 2010 and sampling by regional size and administrative unit (Eup, Myeon, Li) to reflect the regional characteristics more accurately. The data was analyzed using SPSS 18.0 program. The experimental study identified the housing elements that may threaten the life of seniors based on a complete survey on households of elderly people over 65 in a selected typical rural village. As a result, the most inconvenient and threatening factor in the housing facilities appears to be the floor level difference. It was identified that most houses had the risk of falling due to the differences of the floor level between indoor and outdoor, and slippery floor materials. The squat toilets also bring inconvenience not only to the seniors with limited mobility but also to healthy elderly people. In particular, as most bathroom doors opened inward, it may be difficult to escape from or rescue someone in an emergency of falling, fainting or exhaustion.

  • The need for the study of the revealing Sasang constitution at scientific term is increasing as the application of this discipline to the patient produces more accurate result. To obtain scientific evidence of Sasang constitution, it is crucial to analyze accumulated clinical information and associate them to the biological indices that may classify Sasang constitution. Thus, the analysis of clinical information is the most important stepping stone to go toward to the stage of developing model and decision support system (DSS) for classifying Sasang constitution. This study is a preliminary analysis of 1,109 samples collected with 171 clinical indices. To find meaningful clinical indices for classifying Sasang constitutional medicine, we applied decision tree model for them. The skin of 66.5% within whole Taeeumin is thick and non feeble. In the case of 69.8% within whole Soyangin, the skin is non feeble and slippery. In the case of 64.4% within whole Soeumin. they have feeble skin. Therefore, the property of skin can be suggested to be more important than any other index for the classification of Sasang constitution.
