Seismic performance of single pier skewed bridges with different pier-deck connections

  • This research focuses on seismic performance of a class of single pier skewed bridges with three different pier-deck connections; skew angles vary from $0^{\circ}$ to $60^{\circ}$. A well-documented four span continuous deck bridge has been modeled and verified. Seat-type connections with fixed and sliding bearings plus monolithic pier-deck connections are studied. Shear keys are considered either fully operational or ineffective. Seismic performances of the bridges and the structural components are investigated conducting bidirectional nonlinear time history analysis in OpenSees. Several global and intermediate engineering demand parameters (EDP) have been studied. On the basis of results, the values of demand parameters of skewed bridges, such as displacement and rotation of the deck plus plastic deformation and torsional demand of the piers, increase as the skew angle increases. In order to eliminate the deck collapse probability, the threshold skew angle is considered as $30^{\circ}$ in seat-type bridges. For bridges with skew angles greater than $30^{\circ}$, monolithic pier-deck connections should be applied. The functionality of shear keys is critical in preventing large displacements in the bearings. Pinned piers experience considerable ductility demand at the bottom.

  • The existing contact-type bearings using rolling or sliding require continuous maintenance due to abrasion caused by friction and are not suitable for high-speed rotation and slimming. A magnetic bearing without contact can overcome such problems but the performance depends on the allocation of magnets and the structure of bearings. This paper proposes a method designing parameters of a passive magnetic bearing to improve levitation force. The proposed method employs Halbach array as the allocation of magnets, uses particle swam optimization to determine the structure of bearings. The numerical experiment shows that the levitation force is improved by the proposed method compared with the existing one using finite element analysis.

  • In this study, we have designed and fabricated the slidacs type automatic voltage regulator(AVR) that is able to control the output voltage continuously according to road variation. Especially, the frictions between the surface of contact of the slidacs coils and the output wire moving rod are reduced by transforming the mechanical configuration of surface of contact of slidacs from the conventional sliding one into the proposed rotary one composed of cylindrical bearing. Thus, the slidacs type AVR using cylindrical bearing proposed in this study has less noise than conventional one owing to the reduction of frictions, and its breakdown ratio caused by the abrasion of contact materials is reduced.   • Wear diagrams, which are the three dimensional representations of the dependence of the wear rate on the applied pressure and the sliding speed, were constructed with the pin on ring type wear test results using 52100 wear couples. The pressure and speed ranges from 0.45 MPa to 45.30 MPa and from 0.012 m/sec to 0.12 (0.120)m/sec, respectively. The results show the mild to severe transition, which suggests the change of the wear mechanisms as a function of the pressure and sliding speed. The SEM micrographs of the corresponding worn area shows clearly that different wear mechanisms dominate.

  • The friction and wear behaviors of MoS$_2$ coatings were investigated by using a pin and disk type tester. The experiment was conducted by using silicon nitride as pin material and MoS$_2$-on-bearing steel as disk material under different operating conditions that include linear sliding velocities in the range of 22-66 ㎜/sec, normal loads varying from 9.8 N to 29.4 N, corresponding to maximum contact pressures of 1.18-2.83 GPa and atmospheric conditions of high vacuum, medium vacuum, ambient air. The results showed that low friction coefficient of the coating has been identified in high vacuum and that friction coefficient and wear volume increased with increasing normal load. Also at high load conditions, the friction coefficient and wear volume increased with increasing sliding velocity.

  • The friction and wear behavior of MoS$_2$coatings was investigated using a pin and disk type tester. The experiment was conducted with silicon nitride as the pin material and MoS$_2$-on-bearing steel as the disk material under different operating conditions that included linear sliding velocities within a range of 2266 mm/sec, normal loads varying from 9.829.4 N, corresponding to maximum contact pressures of 1.782.83 Gpa, and high vacuum, medium vacuum, and ambient air atmospheric conditions. The results showed a low friction coefficient far the coating in a high vacuum, plus the friction coefficient and wear volume increased with an increased normal load. Furthermore, under high load conditions, the friction coefficient and wear volume also increased with an increased sliding velocity.

  • 이 논문에서는 저층 경량건물을 대상으로 고성능 내진을 구현하기 위하여 적용된 복합면진시스템의 적용효과가 비선형해석과 현장실험을 통하여 제시되었다. 이 연구에서 적용된 복합면진시스템은 슬라이딩베어링(sliding bearing)과 적층고무베어링(laminated rubber bearing)을 혼용하는 방법으로 전체 면진시스템의 고유주기를 신장시키는데 있어서 적층고무베어링이 지니는 한계를 극복하기 위한 것이다. 비선형해석결과, 복합면진시스템을 채용하여 설계된 면진건물은 아주 드물게 발생하는 강진에 대해서도 최대응답변위가 허용설계변위 이내이며, 최대응답전단력이 설계지진력 이하이므로 안전하게 유지될 수 있음을 알 수 있었다. 또한 현장실험결과, 면진층의 강성은 설계 등가강성 값의 약 95.8%에 해당하는 값을 나타내 전체 면진시스템의 실제 특성이 설계값과 잘 일치하고 있음을 확인할 수 있었다.

A Study on the Measurement of Oil-Film Pressure in Engine Connecting Rod Bearing and Piston Pin-Boss by Thin-Film Sensor

  • In order to measure the oil-film pressure in sliding surface of machinery, we have developed a piezo-resistive type thin-film pressure sensor. To reduce the measurement error due to temperature and strain, the constituent of the pressure sensitive alloy was optimized and a new sensor shape was devised. In this study, we present the measurement results of the oil-film pressure distribution in engine connecting rod big-end bearing and piston pin- bosses with 3 different pin-boss shapes using the newly developed thin-film pressure sensor.

  • In case of swash plate type axial piston hydraulic motor, hydrostatic bearing used to achieve the lubrication effect on the mechanical sliding contact areas between the following parirs ; sliooer-pad and swash plate,piston and cylinder bore,valve plate and cylinder block, etc. This study discussed the basic charateristic for the hydrostatic slipper-pad bearings with the capillary or orifice restrictor under static load condition. And, we also development of hydrostatic bearing tester for hydrostatic balancing test of pistion & slipper-pad assembly, and some experimental data on supply pressure step responce are reported.
