Statement of problem: Second-generation indirect composite resins have been improved flexural strength, compressive strength, hydrolytic degradation resistance, wear resistance compared to first-generation indirect composite resins, but there are still some problems as hydrolysis and low wear resistance. Some manufacturers claim that wear resistance of their materials has been improved, but little independent study has been published on wear properties of these materials and the properties specified in the advertising materials are largely derived from in-house or contracted testing. Purpose: This study was to evaluate the wear of indirect composite resins (SR Adore, Sinfony, Tescera ATL) and gold alloy against the human enamel. Material and method: Extracted human incisors and premolars were sectioned to $2{\times}2{\times}2mm$ cube and embedded in the clear resin and formed conical shaped antagonist to fit the jig of pin-on-disk tribometer. Total 20 antagonists were stored in distilled water. Five disk samples, 24mm in diameter and 1.5mm thick, were made for each of three groups of indirect composite resins and gold alloy group, and polished to #2,000 SiC paper on auto-polishing machine. Disk specimens were tested for wear against enamel antagonists. Wear test were conducted in distilled water using a pin-on-disk tribometer under condition (sliding speed 200rpm contact load 24N, sliding distance 160m). The wear of the enamel was determined by weighing the enamel antagonist before and after test, and the weight was converted to volumes by average density. The wear tracks were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy and surface profilometer to elucidate the wear mechanisms. Statistical analysis of the enamel wear volume, wear track depth and wear tract width of disk specimens were accomplished with one-way ANOVA and the means were compared for significant differences with Scheffe's test. Results: 1. The enamel wear was most in gold alloy, but there were no statistically significant differences among all the groups (P>.05). 2. In indirect composite resin groups, the group to make the most shallow depth of wear tract was Sinfony, followed by Tescera ATL, SR Adoro (P<.05). Gold alloy was shallower than Sinfony, but there was no statistically significant difference between Sinfony and gold alloy (P>.05). 3. The width of wear tract of SR Adore was larger than the other groups (P<.05), and there were no statistically significant differences among the other groups (P>.05). 4. SEM analysis revealed that Sinfony and gold alloy showed less wear scars after test, Tescera ATL showed more wear scars and SR Adore showed the most. Conclusion: Within the limits of this study, Sinfony and gold alloy showed the least wear rates and showed similar wear patterns.

In this paper, we analyze the performance, particularly the flow control mechanism, of the CCITT X.25 protocol in a packet-switched network. In this analysis, we consider the link and packet layers separately, and investigate the performance in three measures; normalized channel throughput, mean transmission time, and transmission efficiency. Each of these measures is formulated in terms of given protocol parameters such as windos size, $T_1$ and $T_2$ values, message length, and so forth. We model the service procedure of the inpur traffic based on the flow control mechanism of the X.25 protocol, and investigate the mechanism of the sliding window flow control with the piggybacked acknowlodgment scheme using a discrete-time Markov chain model. With this model, we study the effect of variation of the protoccol parameters on the performance of the X.25 protocol. From the numerical results of this analysis one can select the optimal valuse of the protocol parameters for different channel environments. it has been found that to maintain the trasnmission capacity satisfactorily, the window size must be greater than or equal to 7 in a high-speed channel. The time-out value, $T_1$, must carefully be selected in a noisy channel. In a normal condition, it should be in the order of ls. The value of $T_2$ has some effect on the transmission efficiency, but is not critical.

Planing hull type ships are often equipped with interceptor or trim tab to improve the excessive trim angle which leads to poor resistance and sea keeping performances. The purpose of this study is to design a controller to control the attitude of the ship by controllable stern interceptor and validate the effectiveness of the attitude control by the towing tank test. Embedded controller, servo motor and controllable stern interceptor system were equipped with planing hull type model ship. Prior to designing the control algorithm, a model test was performed to identify the system dynamic model of the planing hull type ship including the stern interceptor. The matrix components of model were optimized by Genetic Algorithm. Using the identified model, PID controller which is a classical controller and sliding mode controller which is a nonlinear robust controller were designed. Gain tuning of the controllers and running simulation was conducted before the towing tank test. Inserting the designed control algorithm into the embedded controller of the model ship, the effectiveness of the active control of the stern interceptor was validated by towing tank test. In still water test with small disturbance, the sliding mode controller showed better performance of canceling the disturbance and the steady-state control performance than the PID controller.
The lubricant tribological characteristics of $Al_2O_3$ fiber and SiC particle hybrid metal matrix composites (MMCs) fabricated by squeeze casting method was investigated using a pin-on-disk wear tester. The wear tests of the MMCs were performed according to fiber/particle hybrid ratio in the planar-random (PR) and normal (N) orientations sliding against a counter steel disk at a fixed speed and $25\;kg_f$ loading under different sliding distances and temperatures. The test results showed that the wear behavior of MMCs varied with fiber orientation and hybrid ratio. At room temperature, the lubricant wear behavior of F20P0 unhybrid PR-MMCs was superior to that of N-MMCs while the hybrid composites exhibited the reverse lubricant wear behavior. It was also revealed that the wear resistance of PR-MMCs was superior to that of the N-MMCs due to the joint action of reinforcements and lubricant film between the friction surfaces at an elevated temperature of $100^{\circ}C$ for both fiber only and hybrid cases. In case of $150^{\circ}C$, although the trend of weight loss was similar to that of others, the wear resistance of PR-MMCs was better than that of N-MMCs for hybrid MMCs.

Bearings of marine engines are operated under severe conditions because of dynamic load and low sliding speed. This paper deals with lubrication analysis of a crank pin bearing for a marine diesel engine. Journal center locus and oil film thickness are compared of crank pin bearing. In the past researches, journal bearings have been studied only about the surface of bearing. In addition to this conventional research, this paper analyzes the effect of roundness error of a journal and a bearing on the minimum film thickness. Numerical analysis has been studied by using Reynolds equation and also Half-Sommerfeld condition is applied as boundary condition. Futhermore, this study investigates the effect of roundness error change on the minimum film thickness. The results demonstrate that the bigger amplitude of roundness error yields, the lower minimum oil film thickness is. In comparison to previous research considered a journal and a bearing individually, the results considering a journal and a bearing together show that amplitude of roundness error of journal has very little effect on the minimum oil film thickness.
Objectives: To challenge the problem of slipperiness, various slipmeters have been developed to assess slip hazard. The performance of in-situ slipmeter is, however, still unclear under the various floor conditions. The main objectives of this study were to evaluate the performance of three kinds of slipmeters under real conditions, and to find their dynamic and kinematic characteristics, which were compared with gait test results. Methods: Four common restaurant floor materials were tested under five contaminants. Slipmeters and human gaits were measured by high speed camera and force plate to find and compare their dynamic and kinematic characteristics. Results: The contact pressures and built-up ratio were below those of subjects. The sliding velocity of British Pendulum Tester was above those of subjects, while those of BOT-3000 and English XL were below those of subjects. From the three meters, the English XL showed the highest overall correlation coefficient (r = 0.964) between slip index and $R_a$, while the rest did not show statistical significance with surface roughness parameters ($R_a$, $R_z$). The English XL only showed statistical significance (p < 0.01) between slip index and contaminants. The static coefficient of friction obtained with the BOT-3000 showed good consistency and repeatability (CV < 0.1) as compared to the results for the BPT (CV > 0.2) and English XL (CV < 0.2). Conclusion: It is unclear whether surface roughness can be a reliable and objective indicator of the friction coefficient under real floor conditions, and the viscosity of contaminants can affect the friction coefficient of the same floors. Therefore, to evaluate slipperiness, the performance of the slipmeters needed to improve.

As data stream is entered into system continuously and the memory space is limited, the data exceeding the memory size cannot be processed. In order to solve the problem, load shedding methods which drop a part of data to prevent exceeding the storage space have been researched. Generally, a traditional load shedding method uses random sampling with optimized rate according to data deviation. The method samples data not to distinguish those used in spatial query because the method uses only a random sampling with optimized rate according to data deviation. Therefore, the accuracy of query was reduced in u-GIS environment including spatial query. In this paper, we researched a new load shedding method improving accuracy of the query in u-GIS environment which runs spatial query and aspatial query simultaneously. The method uses a new sampling method that samples data having low probability used in query. Therefore proposed method improves spatial query accuracy and query processing speed as applying spatial filtering operation to sampling operator.

Surfaces found in nature, including biological surfaces have been providing inspiration to modify/fabricate artificial surfaces as solutions for tribological applications. As an example, the concept of 'lotus-effect' has motivated tribologists world wide to modify/fabricate surfaces for enhanced tribological performance. These was done by creating nano/micro-scale asperities on various surfaces using ion beam milling and ion-beam assisted roughening. In order to understand the attributes of natural surfaces, which are inspirational to tribologists, we characterized the surface of two natural surfaces-Nelumbo nucifera (lotus) and Colocasia esculenta leaves. Further, we evaluated their micro-scale friction property, both in their fresh and dried conditions. The characterization of surfaces was conducted using a confocal microscope and SEM, which involved the evaluation of size and distribution of protuberances. The micro-scale friction property was evaluated using a ball-on-flat type micro-tribo tester, under reciprocating motion. A soda lime glass ball (2 mm diameter) was used in these tests. Tests were conducted at the applied normal load of $3000{\mu}N$, at a sliding speed of 1 mm/sec for a scan length of 3 mm. All experiments were conducted at ambient temperature ($24{\pm}1^{\circ}C}$) and relative humidity ($45{\pm}5%$). It was observed that the friction behaviour of the natural surfaces was influenced by their surface characteristics (morphology and distribution of protuberances) and also by the condition (fresh or dried) in which they were tested.

This paper investigates the stick-slip characteristic of magnetorheological elastomer (MRE) between an aluminum plate and the surface of the MRE. MRE is a smart material and it can change its mechanical behavior with the interior iron particles under the influence of an applied magnetic field. Stick-slip is a movement of two surfaces relative to each other that proceeds as a series of jerks caused by alternate sticking from friction and sliding when the friction is overcome by an applied force. This special tribology phenomenon can lead to unnecessary wear, vibration, noise, and reduced service life of work piece. The stick-slip phenomenon is avoided as far as possible in the field of mechanical engineering. As this phenomenon is a function of material property, applied load, and velocity, it can be controlled using the characteristics of MRE. MRE as a soft smart material, whose mechanical properties such as modulus and stiffness can be changed via the strength of an external magnetic field, has been widely studied as a prospective replacement for general rubber in the mechanical domain. In this study, friction force is measured under different loads, speed, and magnetic field strength. From the test results, it is confirmed that the stick-slip phenomenon can be minimized under optimum conditions and can be applied in various mechanical components.
The understanding of the friction characteristics of micro-textured surface is of great importance to enhance the tribological properties of nano- and micro-devices. We fabricate rectangular patterns with submicron-scale structures on a Si wafer surface with various pitches and heights by using a focused ion beam (FIB). In addition, we fabricate tilted rectangular patterns to identify the influence of the tilt angle ($45^{\circ}$ and $135^{\circ}$) on friction behaviour. We perform the friction test using lateral force microscopy (LFM) employing a colloidal probe. We fabricate the colloidal probe by attaching a $10{\pm}1-{\mu}m$-diameter borosilicate glass sphere to a tipless silicon cantilever by using a ultraviolet cure adhesive. The applied normal loads range between 200 nN and 1100 nN and the sliding speed was set to $12{\mu}m/s$. The test results show that the friction behavior varied depending on the pitch, height, and tilt angle of the microstructure. The friction forces were relatively lower for narrower and deeper pitches. The comparison of friction force between the sub-micro-structured surfaces and the original Si surface indicate an improvement of the friction property at a low load range. The current study provides a better understanding of the influence of pitch, height, and tilt angle of the microstructure on their tribological properties, enabling the design of sub-micro- and micro-structured Si surfaces to improve their mechanical durability.
