  • The effect of texture of an extruded OFHC Cu rod on its sliding wear has been explored. Disk specimens with three different orientations were machined from the Cu rod for the wear test; surfaces of the disk were perpendicular ($0^{\circ}$), inclined with a specific angle ($45^{\circ}$), and parallel ($90^{\circ}$) to the extrusion axis of the rod. The texture was analyzed using an X-ray goniometer by measuring {111}, {200}, and {220} pole figures of each specimen. The analyzed texture was correlated with wear-test results of the Cu specimen. Dry sliding wear tests were performed at room temperature using a pin-on-disk wear tester against an Al2O3 ball. Applied load, sliding distance, sliding speed were fixed as 20 N, 200 m, and 0.5 m/sec, respectively. The $45^{\circ}$-inclined (to the extrusion axis) disk specimen showed the lowest wear resistance with the least data scatters. It has been found that distribution of cube texture strongly influences wear rate of the extruded Cu rod.

  • In nuclear power steam generators, high flow rates can induce vibration of the tubes resulting in fretting wear damage due to contacts between the tubes and their supports. In this paper the fretting wear tests and the sliding wear tests were performed using the steam generator tube materials of Inconel 600 and 690 against STS 304. Sliding tests with the pin-on-disk type tribometer were done under various applied loads and sliding speeds at air environment. Fretting tests were done under various vibrating amplitudes and applied normal loads. From the results of sliding and fretting wear tests, the wear of Inconel 600 and 690 can be predictable using the work rate model. Depending on normal loads and vibrating amplitudes, distinctively different wear mechanisms and often drastically different wear rates can occur. It was found the results that the wear coefficients for Inconel 600 and 690 were 262.3$\times$10$\^$-15/Pa$\^$-1/ and 209.2$\times$10$\^$-15/Pa$\^$-1/, respectively. This study shows that Inconel 690 can provide much better wear resistance than Inconel 600 in air.

  • The paper proposes a sensorless speed control strategy for a PMSM (Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor) based on a new SMO (Sliding Mode Observer), which substitutes a signum function with a sigmoid function. To apply robust sensorless control of PMSM against parameter fluctuations and disturbance, the high speed SMO is proposed, which estimates the rotor position and angular velocity from the back EMF. The low-pass filter and additional position compensation of the rotor are used to reduce the chattering problem commonly found in sliding mode observer with signum function, which becomes possible by applying the sigmoid function with the control of a switching function. Also the proposed sliding mode observer with the sigmoid function has better efficiency than the conventional sliding mode observer since it adjusts the observer gain by variable boundary layer and estimates the stator resistance. The stability of the proposed sliding mode observer is verified by the Lyapunov second method in determining the observer gain. The validity of the proposed high speed PMSM sensorless velocity control has been demonstrated by real experiments.

  • Al matrix composites as the most promising MMCs can be expected to be excellent engineering materials in the nearest future. So as to improve material properties of composite, many manufacturing processes have been developed. Among them, squeeze casting process which offers fine microstructure and near-net-shape is one of the most successful MMCs manufacturing processes. But, in case of with subsieve size particles (under 44 ${\mu}m$), it is very difficult to homogeneously distribute particles in matrix of Al matrix composite by various casting processes, including squeeze casting used so far. Duplex process which was developed in previous study was used to distribute the particle of subsieve size more homogeneously in matrix of Al matrix composite. Microstructures, wear and heat resistance characterization of Al-Si-Cu-Mg-(Ni)/SiCp manufactured by duplex process were examined to clarify the effect of manufacturing conditions, particle size of reinforcement and alloying elements. Al matrix composites reinforced with SiCp(10 ${\mu}m$) have the lowest wear amount among composites reinforced with 3 ${\mu}m$, 5 ${\mu}m$ and 10 ${\mu}m$ SiCp. The wear amount of Al matrix composites with 10 wt.% SiCp(3, 5, 10 ${\mu}m$) was decreased according to the increase of the sliding speed because abrasive wear takes place at high sliding speed of 4m/s and worn debris with block type occurs at low sliding speed of 1m/s. As for heat resistance, it is made clear that remarkable heat resistance property can be obtained by addition of Ni element in Al matrix composites.

  • The effect of vanadium, which is known to decrease the stacking fault energy of Fe-base alloys, on the microstructure and elevated temperature sliding wear resistance of Fe-20Cr- 1.7C- 1Si alloy was investigated. The maximum amount of vanadium maintaining the austenitic matrix seems to be about 3wt.% in Fe-20Cr- 1.7C-1Si-xV (x = 0, 1, 3, 6. lOwt.%) alloys and the austenitic alloys showed better wear resistance than ferritic alloys. It was considered to be due to the low stacking fault energy and $\gamma->\alpha$ strain-induced phase transformation at rmm temperature. It was shown from elevated temperature sliding tests up to .$225^{\circ}C$ that the addition of vanadium increases the temperature, at which the transition from oxidative wear to adhesive wear occur, and the amount of d formed at $225^{\circ}C$. Thus, it was considered that the addition of vanadium improves the elevated temperature sliding wear resistance of Fe-20Cr- 1.7C - 1Si by reducing the increasing rate of stacking fault energy with temperature and by increasing Ma temperature.

  • Effects of cryogenic treatment and tempering temperature on the amount of retained austenite, hardness and wear properties has been investigated using alloy tool steel, STD 11. Cryogenic treatments were performed at the temperatures of $-100^{\circ}C$, $-150^{\circ}C$ and $-196^{\circ}C$, and tempering were performed at $200^{\circ}C$ and $530^{\circ}C$. It was shown that lower hardness value was obtained on high temperature ($530^{\circ}C$) tempering even after cryogenic treatment. And retained austenite was not entirely transformed to martensite after cryogenic treatment even at $-196^{\circ}C$, which was not consistent with the belief that $-80^{\circ}C$ was sufficient to entirely transform any austenite retained in the quenched microstructure. Austenite retained in cryogenic treated condition was completely transformed to martensite only after tempering at $530^{\circ}C$. As far as wear test conditions in this investigation, it was found that cryogenic treatments improved the sliding wear resistance, but improvement of wear resistance was not directly related with retained austenite contents. And it was found that predominent wear mechanisms of STD 11 steel were oxidation wear and adhesive wear In sliding wear conditions.

  • In this paper, a magnetic analysis of SRM(Switched Reluctance Motor) using 3d finite element method considering end-coil effect is presented. SRM models with different stator pole shapes are taken into consideration for the analysis of magnetic characteristics. It is observed that a stator pole shape model having a pole shoe depth is the most suitable one for railway traction application because it gives an improved inductance and torque characteristic. For a speed control of SRM, the PI and sliding mode controllers are applied to designed SRM with magnetic characteristic data obtained from the magnetic analysis. The simulations are carried out using Matlab-Simulink and the control performance is analyzed. By employing the sliding mode controller, the transient response as well as the steady-state error are much improved under a load variation of railway resistance under operation.

  • In this paper, a new nonlinear feedback linearization control scheme for induction motors is developed. The control scheme employs a fuzzy nonlinear identification scheme based on fuzzy basis function expansion to adoptively compensate the parameter variations, i.e. rotor resistance, mutual and self inductance etc. An important feature of the proposed control scheme is to incorporate the sliding mode controller into the scheme to speed up convergence rate. Simulation tests show the robust behavior of the proposed controller in the presence of the parameter uncertainties of the machine.

  • 2 types of geogrids and geotextiles was used to evaluate shear behaviors after installation damage test. Shear behaviors were compared after installation damage test and coefficient of resistance to direct sliding($f_{ds}$) was estimated by theoretical shear analysis. Shear strength of damaged geogrid decreased under high normal stress of 150kPa and shear strength of geotextile decreased with increasing normal stress. It is seen that $f_{ds}$ values after installation damage decreased than before installation damage through comparison calculated $f_{ds}$ by direct theoretical shear analysis. $f_{ds}$ values to be calculated by theoretical shear analysis were changed with before and after installation damage.
