  • The speed and position information of the rotor are required in the speed control of SRM(Switched Reluctance Motors). This information is generally provided by shaft encoder or resolver. It is weak in the dusty, high temperature, and EMI environment. Consequntly, much attention has been given to SRM control for eliminationating the position and speed sensors. In this paper, a new estimation algorithm for the rotor position and speed for SRM drives is described. The algorithm is implemented by the sliding mode observer. The stability and robustness of the sliding observer for the parameter variations of the SRM are proved by variable structure control theory. Speed control of the SRM is accomplished by the estimated speed and position. Experiment results verify that the mode observer is able to estimate the speed and position well.

  • The stewart platform manipulator is a manipulator that has the closed-loop structure with an upper plate end-effector and a base frame. The stewart platform manipulator has the merit of high working accuracy and high stiffness compared with a serial manipulator. However, this is a complex structure, so controllability of the system is not so good. In this paper, we introduce a new robust motion control algorithm using partial state feedback for a class of nonlinear systems in the presence of modelling uncertainties and external disturbances. The major contribution of this work introduces the development and design of robust observer for the state and the perturbation, which is integrated into a variable structure controller(VSC) structure. The combination of controller/observer improves the control performance, because of the robust routine called sliding mode control with sliding perturbation observer(SMCSPO). Simulation and experiment are performed to apply to the manipulator. And their results show a high accuracy and a good performance.

  • In this paper, a new speed sensorless control based on an adaptive sliding mode observer is proposed lot the interior permanent magnet synchronous motor(IPMSM) drives. With using voltage equation only, the adaptive sliding mode observer was investigated. Since the parameter of the dynamic equation such as machine inertia or viscosity friction coefficient are not well known and these values can be easily changed during normal operation, there are many restrictions in the actual implementation. The proposed adaptive sliding mode observer applied to overcome the problem caused by using the dynamic equation. Furthermore, the Lyapunov function is used to prove the system stability included speed estimate and speed control. The effectiveness of the proposed algorithm is confirmed by the experiments.

  • In this paper, an integrated nonlinear sliding mode observer and controller has been designed in order to control of an automotive engine idle speed. The primary objective of the engine idle speed control is to maintain the desired engine idle speed despite of various torque disturbances via estimating air mass flow at the location of the injector in intake manifold by using a sliding mode observer. Simulation results show that the case where both throttle angle and ignition time are used as control inputs outperforms the case where just only throttle angle is used as a control input.

  • A robust disturbance rejection controller for the hovering motion of underwater vehicles in near the surface of sea is presented. The suggested controller consists of two control parts, the one is disturbance observer for taking into account the effects of sea wave and missile-launching forces, and the other is sliding mode controller for the robust stability of underwater vehicles with model uncertainties and nonlinearities. It is shown that the sliding mode control system with disturbance observer is more effective compared with the sliding mode control system, especially in case that large sea wave force is affected.

  • In this paper, a new discrete integral static output feedback variable structure controller based on the a new integral dynamic-type sliding surface and output feedback discrete version of the disturbance observer is suggested for the control of uncertain linear systems. The reaching phase is completely removed by introducing a new proposed integral dynamic-type sliding surface. The output feedback discrete version of disturbance observer is presented for effective compensation of uncertainties and disturbance. A corresponding control with disturbance compensation is selected to guarantee the quasi sliding mode on the predetermined integral dynamic-type sliding surface for guaranteeing the designed output in the integral dynamic-type sliding surface from any initial condition for all the parameter variations and disturbances. Using discrete Lyapunov function, the closed loop stability and the existence condition of the quasi sliding mode is proved. Finally, an illustrative example is presented to show the effectiveness of the algorithm.

  • This study presents a mathematical model and a sliding mode observer of the injection system for common rail diesel engines. The injector model consists of three subsystems: the actuator subsystem, the mechanical subsystem, and the hydraulic subsystem. In the actuator subsystem, the constitutive relations of piezoelectricity are used to model the actuator made up of piezoelectric material. Based on the proposed model, the observer estimates the injection rate and injection timing, and can play a vital role of sensorless control of fuel injection in the near future. The sliding mode theory is applied to the observer design in order to overcome model uncertainties. The injector model and observer are evaluated through the injector experiments. The simulation results of the injector model are in good agreement with the experimental data. The sliding mode observer can effectively estimate the injection timing and the injection rate of the injector.

  • The Stewart platform manipulator is a closed-kinematics chain robot manipulator that is capable of providing high structural rigidity and positional accuracy. However, this is a complex and nonlinear system, so the control performance of the system is not so good. In this paper, a new robust motion control algorithm is proposed. The algorithm uses partial state feedback for a class of nonlinear systems with modeling uncertainties and external disturbances. The major contribution is the design of a robust observer for the state and the perturbation of the Stewart platform, which is combined with a variable structure controller (VSC). The combination of controller and observer provides the robust routine called sliding mode control with sliding perturbation observe. (SMCSPO). The optimal gains of SMCSPO, which is determined by nominal eigenvalues, are easily obtained by genetic algorithm. The proposed fitness function that evaluates the gain optimization is to put sliding function. The control performance of the proposed algorithm is evaluated by the simulation and experiment to apply to the Stewart platform. The results showed high accuracy and good performance.

  • It is well known that the model of nuclear reactors features natural nonlinearity, and variable parameters during power tracking operation. In this paper, a disturbance observer-based adaptive sliding mode control (DOB-ASMC) strategy is proposed for power tracking of the pressurized-water reactor (PWR) in the presence of lumped disturbances. The nuclear reactor model is firstly established based on point-reactor kinetics equations with six delayed neutron groups. Then, a new sliding mode disturbance observer is designed to estimate the lumped disturbance, and its stability is discussed. On the basis of the developed DOB, an adaptive sliding mode control scheme is proposed, which is a combination of backstepping technique and integral sliding mode control approach. In addition, an adaptive law is introduced to enhance the robustness of a PWR with disturbances. The asymptotic stability of the overall control system is verified by Lyapunov stability theory. Simulation results are provided to demonstrate that the proposed DOB-ASMC strategy has better power tracking performance than conventional sliding mode controller and PID control method as well as conventional backstepping controller.
