  • The surfaces of machine components in sliding contact such as bearing, gears and pistons etc. frequently operate under the condition of mixed lubrication due to high load, high speed and slip. These machine components often undergo the inception of scuffing in practical application. The scuffing failure is a critical problem in modern machine components, especially for the requirement of high efficiency and small size. However, it is difficult to find a universal mechanism to explain all scuffing phenomena because there are so many factors affecting the onset of scuffing. In this study, scuffing experiments are conducted using Acoustic Emission(AE) measurement by an indirect sensing approach to detect scuffing failure. Acoustic Emission(AE) signal has been widely utilized to monitor the interaction at the friction interface. Using AE signals we can get an indication about the state of the friction processes, about the quality of solid and liquid layers eon the contacting surfaces in real time. The FFT(Fast Fourier Transform)analyses of the AE signal are used to understand the interfacial interaction and the relationship between the AE signal and the state of contact is presented

  • The friction and wear behaviors of magnetron sputtered MoS$_2$ films were investigated through the use of a pin and disk type tester. The experiments were performed for two kinds of specimens (ground (Ra 0.5 $\mu\textrm{m}$) and polished (Ra 0.01 $\mu\textrm{m}$) substrates) under the following operating condifions : linear sliding velocities in the range of 22~66 mm/s (3 types), normal loads varying from 9.8~29.4 N(3 types) and atmospheric conditions of air, medium and high vacuum (3types). Silicon nitride pin was used as the lower specimen and magnetron sputtered MoS$_2$ on bearing steel disk was used as the upper specimen. The results showed that low friction property of the MoS$_2$ films could be identified in high vacuum and the specific wear rate in air was much higher than that in medium and high vacuum due to severe oxidation. It was found that the main wear mechanism in air was oxidation whereas in high vacuum accumulation of plastic flow and adhesion, were the main causes of wear.

  • The failures of the agricultural reservoirs that most have more than 50 years, have increased due to the abnormal weather and localized heavy rains. There are many studies on the prediction of damage from reservoir collapse, however, these referenced studies focused on evaluating reservoir collapse as single unit and applyed to one and two dimensional hydrodynamic model to identify the fluid flow. This study is to estimate failure probability of spillway, sliding, bearing capacity and overflowing targeting small and medium scale agricultural reservoirs. In addition, we calculate failure probability by complex mode. Moreover, we predict downstream flood damage by reservoir failure applying three dimensional hydrodynamic model. When the reservoir destroyed, the results are as follows; (1) the flow of fluid proceeds to same stream direction and to a lower slope by potential and kinetic energy; (2) The predicted damage in downstream is evaluated that damage due to building destruction is the highest.

  • In this studys a numerical analysis on the defomation of foundation layer was carried out by indroducing joint element. The method using the joust element between adj assent different materials has been originally developed for rock behavior(Goodman, et al. 1968) . The application of this method to the interface between the footing and soil layer proved satisfactory(Ghaboussi p et at. 1973). Authors tried to obtain the deformation of rrcompound foundation layerg", which vertically or horizontally or both consists of the natural(or intact) soft clay layer and the layer improved artificially in order to get high stiff-fness with replacement or chemical treatment to reduce the excessively detrimental settlemellt or lateral displacement in case of banking or building the civil structure on the soft layer. The joint conditions were classified into three categories : contacts sliding and separation. By coupling "JOINT" as a subroutine into multi-purpose code for the finite element method of the foundatlion daveloped by authors on the assumption that shearing and normal displacement can not be coupledl which terms pinon-dilatant" and by selecting modified Cam-clay modeIP the deformation analysis was performmed. The results using joint element were compared with those secured without introduction of joint element Nain results analized are as follows : 1. For the prediction of settlement and lateral desplacement, the result due to joint element was evaluated larger, which was regarded safe. 2. For the determination of ultimate bearing capacetyi the value using joint element appeared smaller by 20%, which was also safe.

  • This study aims to develop the program for design of a reinforced earth retaining wall. For this purpose, the external stability such as overturning, sliding and bearing capacity and the internal stability such as pull-out failure and tensile rupture of the reinforced earth retaining wall with the reinforcement spacing and the backfill inclination were examined. In addition, the calculated results from the developed program were verified by comparing with the simulated results based on the three-dimensional finite element analysis. It is expected that this program contributes to effective design of the reinforced earth retaining wall.

  • The objective of this paper is to develop a rational reliability analysis procedure for the LRFD design provisions of bridge substructures. A bridge abutments is considered in this study. The reliability analysis is applied to determine the relationship between the major design parameters for bridge abutment and reliability index. The considered load components include dead load, vertical and horizontal earth pressure, earth surcharge, and vehicle live load. Several limit states are considered: foundation bearing capacity, sliding, and overturning. The analysis results show that the most important parameter in the reliability analysis is the effective stress friction angle of the soil. The reliability indices are calculated using Monte Carlo simulations for a selected bridge abutment. The results of the sensitivity analysis indicate that reliability index is most sensitive with regard to resistance factor and horizontal earth pressure factor.

  • This paper details application of a DLC(Diamond Like Carbon)-coating to the swash plate and the ball joint of pistons that make sliding contact with the piston shoes of an axial piston pump. This process, aimed to reduce the frictional and leakage power losses of the hydrostatic piston shoe bearings at the low speed range. At lower speeds than 100rpm, the positive effects of the DLC-coating on the power loss reduction of the hydrostatic piston shoe bearings could be confirmed. These effects resulted in little improvement in volumetric efficiency of the test pump, but the mechanical efficiency could be raised by up to 5% at 100rpm; here, the DLC-coated swash plate played a more dominant role than the DLC-coated ball joint.

  • Shear strength of soil is power that resists failure and sliding according to any face in soils and one of the most important factors during engineering properties of soil. Shear strength is used for engineering science problems as bearing capacity methods of foundation or piles, slope stability after dam or Cutting Embankment and stability problem analysis of soils as lateral earth pressure of soil structures, ets. This study has analyzed shear strength change of samples classified 2.00mm(10sieve)와 0.85mm(20sieve), 0.475mm(40sieve) using direct shear tester after removing and drying cohesive soil ingredient of Weathered granite soil Therefore, this study would help studies about shear strength properties by particle size.

  • The friction and wear behaviors of Magnetron Sputtered MoS$_2$films were investigated by using a pin on disk type tester which was designed and manufactured for this experiment. The experiment was conducted by using silicon nitride (Si$_3$N$_4$) as a pin material and Magnetron Sputtered MoS$_2$on bearing steel (STB2) as a disk material, under operating conditions that include different surface roughness (Polishing specimen, Grinding specimen)(2types), linear sliding velocities in the range of 22, 44, 66mm/sec (3types), normal loads vary from 9.8N, 19.6N, 29.4N(3types), corresponding to contact pressures of 1.9∼2.7GPa and atmospheric conditions of high vacuum( 1.3${\times}$10$\^$-4/Pa), medium vacuum( 1.3${\times}$10$\^$-l/Pa), ambient air(10$\^$5/Pa)(3types). We investigated fracture mechanism in magnetron sputtered MoS$_2$films with Magnetron Sputtering method in each experiment.
