  • A pilot study was undertaken to examine the possible health effects of electromagnetic fields (EMFs). An experimental study was performed for two weeks of preexposure, exposure, postexposure period of February-May 1997 to determine changes in melatonin levels in urine of five volunteers before or after exposure to electric mattress during their normal sleeping hours. An urine sample was collected at about 8 a.m. right after getting up from each volunteer. Average melatonin levels seemed to be 1.6 times lower during EMF exposure period for two weeks than the corresponding levels during preexposure period. Mean melatonin levels in postexposure period were lower than the corresponding levels in preexposure period. It suggested that melatonin levels were likely to take more two weeks for recovering the preexposure melatonin level. Further research is underway with regard to EMF exposure effects on melatonin levels between occupational and nonoccupational groups.

  • Leaf temperature is complicated with the microclimate and the dry matter production in a plant community. But a daily change of leaf temperature varying by the locality in plant body or plant community is not yet clear. To resolve such a question, following experiment was designed; Helianthus tuberosus L., Glycine max L., Zea mays L., Impomoea batatas Lam., and Cucurbita moschata var. toonas Makino were planted in the different sandy loam, $2m{\times}2m-quadrat$, which has a eastern, southern, western and northern edge. In each plot 17-25 plants were planted and the distances between individuals spaced uniformly. And leaf temperature were measured by MR3-C type thermistor from 14th May through 20th August. It is seems that the upper leaf is affected by solar radiation, the lower leaf by released heat from the earth and the middle leaf by the conditions of both zones. Measuring the temperature of a leaf that is on terminal, central, left and right margins and base part, temperature of control plant in a leaf was sloped during about two hours from noon. It is noticeable as a "noon sleeping" phenomenon.henomenon.

  • Some treatment methods have been proposed for patients with chronic closed lock of temporomandibular joint. We report a conservative treatment for patients who had chronic closed lock of temporomandibular joint and who did not want surgical treatment. Two patients who had been treated in the Template clinic, Soonchunhyang University Bucheon Hospital, are the subjects of this report. The subjects had chronic closed lock symptom for over 3 months after an onset of locking; conventional therapies had no effect. The subjects were treated by making them wear a Template appliance while sleeping and exercise for 10 hours a day. After periodic follow-up, significant improvement was observed for Template treatment in terms of the maximal mouth opening range. When conventional therapy is expected to be ineffective, The Template appliance can be used as conservative treatment for temporomandibular disorders patients with chronic closed lock of temporomandibular joint.

  • With radical increase in one-person households, the consumption market in Korea has also rapidly changed. In line with this movement, customized furniture for sing lecustomershas been recently introduced. Since sleeping more than eight hours a day is needed to maintain a healthy lifestyle, a suitable bed for a comfortable sleep is an essential product for single consumers. In order to respond to this trend, a study was conducted to examine the surface materials of a bed designed for singles. A complete enumeration survey was implemented for beds manufactured by ACEBED Co., Ltd., Simmons-k, Co, Ltd,. Keumsung Bed, Hanssem Co,. Ltd., Hyundai Livart Co,. Ltd,. Emons Furniture Co,. Ltd,. and Borneo International Furniture Co., Ltd. This study helped in the proper selection of surface materials that may be used in the development of furniture for single consumers.

  • To screen biologically active components of the higher fungi of Korea, the carpophores of Auricularia polytricha, a well-known edible mushroom, were extracted with 0.14M NaCl solution. The extractive was successively fractionated by adding ammonium sulfate in various amounts, the respective precipitates being weparated by centrifugation, dialyzed and freeze-dried. When a dose of 60mg/kg of each was, i.p., injected into ICR mice, the fraction shich was precopitated at 20% (NH$_{4}$)$_{2}$SO$_{4}$ showed the highest toxicity, killing seven mice within two days. The fraction obtained at 40% (NH$_{4}$)$_{2}$SO$_{4}$ showed the second highest toxicity. The two fractions were named auratoxin I and II after the genus name. The symptoms of the intoxication were convulsion during the first 30 minutes after the injection, then sleeping within an hour, and tremor, lacrimation, nasal and ophthalmic bleeding, congestion and death in 24 hours. Particularly the spleen of the mice was fonud to be enlarged remarkably. The chemical analysis of the toxins showed that auratoxin I consisted of 4.4% protein and 84.5% polysaccharide and that auratoxin II 35.8% protein and 48.0% polysaccharide.

  • Introduction: We report a rare case in which the symptoms of hypersomnia were caused by cerebral infarction that occurred in the hypothalamus and hypothalamus. Case Presentation: The patient underwent Korean medicine treatments using Gami-seonghyangjeonggi-san, acupuncture, electroacupuncture, and physical therapy for 37 days. We evaluated the degree of improvement in hypersomnolence based on the amount of sleeping time and the degree of memory impairment with the patient's suggestive conditions as observed by the patient's guardian, and one-sided facial palsy using the Yanagihara Scale. As treatment was applied, sleeping time was decreased from 22 to 9 hours a day. Memory impairment did not show clear improvements as the patient could not recognize others when they visited during the period in which the patient underwent treatment. One-sided facial palsy showed no improvements and there were no changes in the Yanagihara Scale results. Conclusion: This case showed that Korean medicine treatment could be effective to relieve some of the symptoms of thalamus and hypothalamus infarction. Further research is needed to confirm the effectiveness of Korean medicine treatment.

  • Objectives Sleep duration and sleep quality are closely related to obesity, however there are few studies considering the Sasang constitution. This study is to investigate the relationship between sleep status and obesity according to Sasang constitution. Methods This cross-sectional research studied 2,672 participants (1,293 men and 1,379 women) using the Korean Medicine Data Center (KDC) of the KIOM. Sasang constitution was diagnosed by KS-15 questionnaire. Obesity was divided into two categories: general obesity was defined as Body Mass Index(BMI) ${\geq}25kg/m^2$, and abdominal obesity was defined as waist circumference ${\geq}90cm$ in men and ${\geq}85cm$ in women. Sleep quality was assessed using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index. Results The distribution of the subjects was 56.9% for Taeumin and 43.1% for non-Taeeumin., Poor sleep quality increased both BMI and waist circumference in Taeeumin. In men Taeeumin, sleep duration was correlated with BMI, and sleep quality was correlated with waist circumference. The prevalence of obesity was significant difference according to sleeping duration in men Taeeumin, it was the highest at 6 hours of sleeping time. Conclusions Sleep duration and sleep quality was associated with obesity in Taeeumin. Especially, in men Taeeumin, adequate sleep duration was an important factor for prevention and treatment of obesity.
