Purpose: The purpose of this exploratory study was to find a specific time of day with a stable cortisol level and to investigate the relationship between salivary cortisol and sleep. Methods: A total of 36 Korean female college students participated in the study. Salivary specimens were collected 6 times a day for 2 days in different stressful situations. Sleep characteristics were measured using an actigraph while salivary specimens were collected. Perceived stress was evaluated using the Global Assessment of Recent Stress. Results: Depending on whether there were morning peak and/or afternoon elevations in the cortisol levels, the type of diurnal cortisol pattern was classified into 4 types. None of the cortisol levels in different times of the day showed significant relationships to perceived stress levels. Cortisol levels in the morning, levels of peak cortisol and diurnal differences of cortisol were significantly correlated with sleep duration. The time with most stable cortisol level was 9-10 pm. Conclusion: It is recommended that measurements of salivary cortisol are taken from 9-10 pm since it showed a stable value regardless of diurnal cortisol rhythm and sleep. Sleep duration should be considered as an important confounding factor in measuring cortisol levels in the morning and the diurnal differences of cortisol.
Insomnia has become a major public health issue in recent times. Although quality of sleep is affected by environmental, psychophysiological, and pharmacological factors, diet and nutrient intake also contribute to sleep problems. This study investigated the association between nutrient intake and co-morbid symptoms associated with sleep status among selected adults. Subjects in this study included 87 men and women aged 21-45 years. Presence of insomnia was assessed using the Insomnia Screening Questionnaire, and dietary intake was measured over three consecutive days by dietary survey. Descriptive analysis, ANOVA, and Chi-Square tests were performed to compute and interpret the data. Approximately 60% of the participants were insomniacs. People with insomnia consumed significantly lesser quantities of nutrients as compared to normal sleepers. Differences in intakes of energy, carbohydrates, folic acid, and $B_{12}$ were highly significant (P < 0.002). Further, intakes of protein, fat, and thiamine were significantly different (P < 0.021) between insomniacs and normal sleepers. The nutrient intake pattern of the insomniacs with co-morbid symptoms was quite different from that of the normal sleepers. Based on these results, it is probable that there is an association between nutrition deficiency, co-morbid symptoms, and sleep status. More studies are required to confirm these results.

People try to maintain optimal sleep activity to a changing attitude 20-30 times while sleeping 7-8 hours a day. In order to provide optimal sleep, we need to develop sensing device for apply effective various sleep data acquired through display device that can provide program and information which process and analyze information printed out from sensor and sensing system. In this paper, we analyze sleep pattern to detect the toss and turn while a person's sleeping and we develop a wellness pillow that can be active on sleep health management based on the analyzed data for sleep patterns.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationships among depression, sleep patterns and health promoting behavior in female college students. Methods: The subjects of this study consisted of 350 college students. The data was collected through self-administered questionnaires from November to December of 2004. The data was analyzed via the SPSS computer program by using descriptive statistics, t-tests, ANOVA and Pearson's correlation coefficients. Results: There are significant differences and impacts on depression according to the amount of coffee consumed, the time spent on computer and the amount of smoke inhaled. Sleep patterns differ depending on one's college major, the time spent on computer, and the amount of smoke inhaled. Health promotion behavior was shown to be significantly different according to the living style, college major and how much TV was watched The mean scores for depression, sleep patterns, health promoting behavior were 1.45 (on a 3 points scale), 2.71 (on a 4 points scale), and 3.03 (on a 5 point scale), respectively. There was a significant positive correlation between sleep patterns and health promoting behavior, and there was negative correlation between depression and health promoting behavior, and between depression and sleep patterns in college students. Conclusion: The findings of this study give useful information to create further studies on intervention programs related to health promoting behavior for college female students.
Diazepam, a benzodiazepine (BDZ) agonist, produces sedation and flumazenil, a BDZ antagonist, blocks these actions. The aim of this study was to examine the effects of BDZs on cortical electroencephalogram (EEG) in rats. The recording electrodes were implanted over the frontal and parietal cortices bilaterally, and the reference and ground electrodes over cerebellum under ketamine anesthesia. To assess the effects of diazepam and flumazenil, rats were injected with diazepam (1 mgHg, i.p.) and/or flumazenil ( 1 mg/kg, i.p.), and the EEG was recorded before and after drugs. Normal awake had theta peak in the spectrum and low amplitude waves, while normal sleep showed large amplitude of slow waves. The powers of delta, theta and alpha bands were increased during sleep compared with during awake. Diazepam reduced the mobility of the rat and induced sleep with intermittent fast spindles and large amplitude of slow activity, and it produced broad peak over betaL band and increased the power of gamma band, which were different from EEG patterns in normal sleep. Saline injection awakened rats and abolished fast spindles for a short period about 2-5 min from EEG pattern during diazepam-induced sleep. Flumazenil blocked both diazepam-induced sleep and decreased the slow activities of delta, theta, alpha and betaL, but not of gamma activity for about 10 min or more. This study may indicate that decrease in power of betaL and betaH bands can be used as the measure of central action of benzodiazepines, and that the EEG parameters of benzodiazepines have to be measured without control over the behavioral state by experimenter.
The purpose of this study was to assess pain, life satisfaction, sleep pattern, and depression and the relations between these in elderly women with ostearthritis. Methods: The subjects were 124 elderly women with osteoarthritis at senior center in C city. Data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, Pearson's correlation coefficients, and multiple regression with SPSS/WIN 14.0. Results: The major findings of this study were as follows. 1) The mean score of variables were pain 2.58, life satisfaction 65.4, sleep pattern 37.6 and depression 13.58. 2) 43.5% of the subjects belonged to depression group. 3) There were significant relationships between depression and pain, life satisfaction, sleep pattern. 4) Significant factors influencing depression were life satisfaction, pain and sleep pattern. These factors explained 48% of depression in elderly women with ostearthritis. Among them, life satisfaction was the most significant factor. Conclusion: These finding give useful information for constructing an intervention and preventive program depression in the elderly women with osteoarthrtitis.
Objectives : Daytime drowsiness or sedation and changes in night sleep are commonly seen in patients treated with clozapine. There is, however, very limited information on their degree and nature during the course of treatment. The purpose of this study was to understand the sleep patterns in chronic schizophrenic patients with clozapine treatment over a period of 24 weeks. Method : The sleep pattern was evaluated using a set of 5-point scale questionnaire, to record subjective impressions of the night sleep induction, maintenance and quality, and daytime drowsiness and fatigue. In addition, unusual experiences associated with night sleep were recorded. The sleep questionnaire was repeatedly administered at baseline and at 1, 2, 4, 8, 12 and 24 weeks of drug treatment. At present, data on 12 patients has been collected. Results : All the components of night sleep were significantly improved in the 1st through the 12th week after treatment with clozapine. Daytime drowsiness was significantly higher in the 1st to the 2nd week after the treatment and fatigue was also significantly higher in the 1st to the 4th week after the treatment. Eight patients experienced noticeable increases in salivation during night sleep, and of these, one also reported frequent nocturnal urination and even enuresis. However, all these adverse factors did not affect the major sleep patterns. Conclusions : These findings suggest that the beneficial effects of clozapine on night sleep might last much longer than the undesirable effect of daytime drowsiness and fatigue. In other words, tolerance of the hypnotic action of clozapine might develop late and tolerance of the daytime drowsiness and fatigue might be evident earlier.
Objectives : Sleep Disorders are very common in clinical stages and there are many reports and papers regarding this subject. I try to understand the present state of sleep research in JON (The Journal of Oriental Neuropsychiatry) for the benefits of clinical practice. Methods : We searched and read every article on JON from 1990 to 2012 and selected ones that are related to Sleep Disorder; then analyzed the data to 5 categories, like literature study, case study, Clinical Data-Analysis study, experimental study, and clinical trial. Results : 1. We Found 41 articles relating to sleep disorder in JON form 1999 to 2012, and there were 9 literature studies, 13 case studies, 13 Clinical Data-Analysis studies, 4 experimental studies, and 2 clinical trials. 2. There were Sa-Am Acupuncture Method, Pharmacopuncture, electroacupuncture, and Auricular acupuncture to treat Sleep Disorder. 3. There were many additional treatments like Purgative Therapy, etc. 4. They reported the ordinary sleep pattern of Soeumin and Soyangin, too. 5. In the experimental study, they reported several herbs, herbal prescription on the expression of melatonin receptors, and Punsimgeimgamibang on insomnia, anxiety, emotionality in rats. 6. There were 2 clinical trials, one for Hwabyung-patient with insomnia by acupuncture treatment and another for insomnia in the elderly by ETF-I program. 7. There were 2 case of other sleep disorder (enuresis, sleepwalking) and 2 literature study of dream. Conclusions : In JON regarding sleep disorder, the majority was due to insomnia. Therefore, we also have to expand our sight into other sleep diseases. We need more clinical trials and experimental researches for the construction of EBM Sleep Disorder in Oriental Neuropsychiatry.
This study was attempted to show basic data for search of nursing intervention about sleep improving in home and institute elderly peoples. Research design was cross-sectional survey method for comparison of sleep patterns and another variables between home and institute elderly peoples. Subjects were sampled by purpose as home and institute elderly peoples at age of 65 or older in Seoul or nearly. The survey questionnaire was used by modification of sleep questionnaire which Kim, O, Song & Bak(1997) developed. Data were collected between December, 1999 and April, 2000. And data were analyzed by SPSS PC+ for purpose of research. Results are as follows: 1. Home and institute elderly peoples, all were change of sleep patterns and sleep pattern was showed early sleeping down. But institute elderly peoples slept earlier than home elderly peoples. 2. As rest of morning, difficulty of falling asleep and disturbance of re-asleep, subjective thinking and feeling were showed more negative thing home elderly peoples than institute elderly peoples. As frequency of falling asleep within 5 min in 1 week, frequency of falling asleep over 30 min in 1 week and frequency of awakening in a day, objective frequency were showed more insomnia institute elderly peoples than home elderly peoples. Home elderly peoples didn't nap most and institute elderly peoples napped on very short time. 3. Regarding sleep-disturbing factors, physical factor was popularly joint-disturbance in all, home and institute elderly peoples. Environmental factor was popularly noise, particularly institute elderly peoples. Emotional factor wasn't all. 4. Practiced strategies for better sleep was popularly TV/Radio in home elderly peoples and were popularly regular sleep and religious action in institute elderly peoples. From the results of this study, home elderly peoples need nursing intervention of improving self-satisfaction on sleep and institute elderly peoples need nursing intervention of decreasing falling asleep-disturbing and decreasing frequency of awakening in sleep.

The purpose of this study was to recognized the sleep activity patterns of the normal infants in Korea. The subject were 41 normal infants who were below 8 weeks old and were born in Taegu city and Kyungbuk province. The measuring instrument the sleep activity was NCASA translated by the Korean-parent-child Health Academic Association. The data that were collected from April, 18 1999 to January 1, 2000 were analysed by the SPSS 7.5 program. The results of the study was summarized as follow; 1) The mean amount of total sleeping hours per day was decreased from $16.27{\pm}1.96$ hr at the 1st week, to $15.19{\pm}2.39$ hr at the 2nd week, to $13.66{\pm}2.40$ hr at the 3 week but increased to $16.55{\pm}5.77$ hr at the 4-8 week after birth. 2) The mean frequency of feeding was increased to $9.43{\pm}2.79$ times at the 3rd week but decreased to $7.55{\pm}1.23$ times at the 4-8th week after birth. 3) The regularity of day time sleep was decreased from 50.00% to 19.79% and that of night time sleep was increased from 51.79% to 72.92%. 4) The regularity of feeding was increased from 30.42% at the 1st week to 50.07% at the 2nd week but decreased 26.34% at the 4-8th week after birth. 5) The longest period of day time sleep was decreased to $2.39{\pm}0.42$ hr at the 3rd week but increased $2.47{\pm}0.69$ hr at the 4-8th week after birth. The longest period of night time sleep was decreased to $2.58{\pm}0.67$ hr at the 2nd week but increased to $3.00{\pm}1.32$ at the 3rd week and $4.30{\pm}1.16$ hr at the 4-8th week after birth. 6) At the 1st week, the 2nd week, the 3rd week after birth, the frequency of day time feeding was positively correlated with the frequency of night time feeding($R_{1week}=0.948^{**}$, $R_{2week}=0.927^{**}$, $R_{3week}=0.779^{**})$. At the 4-8th week after birth, the frequency of night time feeding was negatively correlated with the amount of night time sleep ($R_{4week-8week}=0.875^{*}$). On the basis of above findings, the following is suggested; It is need a longitudinal and transcultural study which are designed for children's sleep and feeding.
