  • Clouds in the atmosphere are important variables that affect the temperature change by reflecting the radiant energy of the earth surface as well as changing the amount of sunshine by reflecting the sun's radiation energy. Especially, the amount of sunshine on the surface is very important It is essential information. Therefore, eye-observations of the sky on the surface of the earth have been enhanced by satellite photographs or relatively narrowed observation equipments. Therefore, cloud automatic observing systems have been developed in order to replace the human observers, but depending on the seasons, the reliability of observations is not high enough to be applied in the field due to pollutants or fog in the atmosphere. Therefore, we have developed a cloud observation algorithm that is robust against smog and fog. It is based on the calculation of the degree of aerosol from the all-sky image, and is added to the developed cloud reader to develop season- and climate-insensitive algorithms to improve reliability. The result compared to existing cloud readers and the result of cloud cover is improved.

  • We present a software which we developed for the multi-purpose CCD camera. This software can be used on the all 3 types of CCD - KAF-0401E ($768{\times}512$), KAF-1602E ($1536{\times}1024$), KAF-3200E ($2184{\times}1472$) made in KODAK Co.. For the efficient CCD camera control, the software is operated with two independent processes of the CCD control program and the temperature/shutter operation program. This software is designed to fully automatic operation as well as manually operation under LINUX system, and is controled by LINUX user signal procedure. We plan to use this software for all sky survey system and also night sky monitoring and sky observation. As our results, the read-out time of each CCD are about 15sec, 64sec, 134sec for KAF-0401E, KAF-1602E, KAF-3200E., because these time are limited by the data transmission speed of parallel port. For larger format CCD, the data transmission is required more high speed. we are considering this control software to one using USB port for high speed data transmission.

  • Characgcteristics of nocturnal boundary layer(NBL) were analyzed by the upper-air observations data using with the airsonde and pilot balloons from 1994 to 1999 in Kyungpook province. The automate weather boundary layer can become stably stratified when the surface is cooler than the air. Stable nocturnal boundary layer height were estimated from the top of surface stable layer where the vertical gradient of temperature and mixing ratio tend to zero or negative. The depth of the stable nocturnal boundary layer depended largely on the thermal effect rather than the wind effect at nighttime. The NBL was more developed on the land than on the coastal region. The stability index (bulk Richardson number) showed that the NBL was stable when the wind was weak and the vertical gradient of the temperature was strong. The heat budget in the NBL was studied by considering the effect of the radiative and the cooled by both the longwave radiative flux and the divergence of the heat flux, while NBL under the cloudy sky the longwave radiative flux played a role of the warming. It was noted that the heat was not conserved in both cases. To complete the heat budget in the NBL the warming/cooling by advection and subsidence must be considered.

  • This study is to make a protype of forecast guidance for forecasters from analyzing the characteristics of Korea Fog. The trend of Korea fog showed the decline in the number of foggy days and the duration time, the gradient is -1.24days/year under 3 miles and -0.98days/year under 1 mile and -1.64hours/year under 3 miles and -3.18hours/year under 1 mile in duration time in 27 ROKAF base. To find the protype of inland and coastal forecast guidance, Daegu base as a representation of the inland base and Gangneung base as the representation of the coastal base were chosen. For Daegu base, the mixture of relative humidity, sky condition, and the position of high pressure were selected for the forecast guidance. For Gangneung base, pressure pattern, sea surface temperature, sea currents, and 850hPa temperature patterns were selected for the forecast guidance.

  • Efficient two-color-mixed white organic light-emitting diodes are presented herein by employing a sky-blue phosphorescent dopant of iridium(III)bis[4,6-(difluorophenyl)-pyridinato-N,$C^{2'}$]picolinate (FIrpic) and an orange phosphorescent dopant of bis(2-phenylquinoline)(acetylacetonate)iridium(III) ($Ir(phq)_2$acac) on the emissive layer. Very stable color variation under ${\Delta}$0.02 until a 5000 cd/$m^2$ brightness value was realized by efficient carrier control in a multi-stacked emitting layer of blue/red/blue colors. Maximum current and power efficiencies of 23.8 cd/A and 22.9 lm/W in the forward direction were obtained. With balanced emission from the two emitters, the white-light emission of high correlated color temperature of 7308K and the Commission Internationale de I'Eclairage coordinates of (0.30, 0.33) were achieved.

  • We have constructed a level-1 processor to generate brightness temperatures using the direct-broadcast data from the passive microwave radiometer onboard Aqua satellite. Although 50-minute half-orbit data, called a granule, are being routinely produced by global data centers, to our knowledge, this is the first attempt to process 10-minute long direct-broadcast (DB) data. We found that the processor designed for a granule needs modification to apply to the DB data. The modification includes the correction to path number, the selection of land mask and the manipulation of dummy scans. Pixel-to-pixel comparison with a reference indicates the difference in brightness temperature of about 0.2 K rms and less than 0.05 K mean. The difference comes from the different length of data between 50-minute granule and about 10-minute DB data. In detail, due to the short data length, DB data do not always have correct cold sky mirror count. The DB processing system is automated to enable the near-real time generation of brightness temperatures within 5 minutes after downlink. Through this work, we would be able to enhance the use of AMSR-E data, thus serving the objective of direct-broadcast.

  • Dyeing cotton fabric with direct dye (C. I. Direct Blue 15) by redox sytem of ammonium persulfate as an oxidant and glucose as reductant was studied. It was found that covalent bond between dye and cellulose molecule can be formed by free radical produced by the redox system in the dye bath, which enhanced significantly the color strength. The retained color strength after DMF extraction was much better in the presence than in the absence of the redox sytem. The optimum dyeing condition was 0.028 mol/$\ell$(APS/Glucose each) of redox concentration, 65$^{\circle}C$ of dyeing temperature and 60min of dyeing time. The color variation on the dyed sample had not been observed as a result of fixed ${\lambda}_max$.

  • We utilize Sloan Digital Sky Survey DR7 spectroscopy of ~600 emission line galaxies (ELGs) in the Virgo and Ursa Major clusters to investigate their chemical properties depending on the environments. We derived chemical abundances of galaxies using either a direct estimation of the electron temperature or empirical calibrations. We also estimated star formation rates (SFRs) using H alpha and GALEX ultraviolet (UV) luminosities. We see no significant difference of UV colors and SFRs of ELGs between the Virgo and Ursa Major, indicating weak dependence of their star formation activity on global cluster environment. We also discuss the segregation of gas-phase element abundances in cluster environment.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the characteristics of outdoor thermal environment of flat-type apartment houses and tower-type apartment houses in summer by numerical simulation. After inputting a building condition at CAD, we calculated the surface temperature for two apartments by using the numerical simulation of a clear sky day in summer in Seoul. The results indicated that the variation in Heat Island Potential(HIP) of tow apartments were not only in the day but also in the night. According to form of apartment the flat-type apartment houses appeared $1.3^{\circ}C$ more highly tower-type apartment houses.

  • We present a prediction for 21cm differential brightness temperature (dTb) from a set of strongly clustered sources of Population III and II objects at high redshift, from a suite of numerical simulations of their formation and radiative processes. These objects are located inside a highly biased density environment ("Rarepeak"), which is a rare, high-density peak which extends to ~7 comoving Mpcs. We study the impact on the resulting 21 cm signal from their ultraviolet and X-ray properties. The boost of emission (dTb>0) by high-density environment, moderate leakage of X-ray photons, and strong absorption due to Lyman-alpha pumping contrive to make Rarepeak a discernible, spatially-extended (sky angle~10') object around z~15, which is found to be detectable as a single object by Square Kilometre Array (SKA) with integration time of ~[600-2000] hours. We also examine detectability of many such peaks through SKA precursors.
