  • This study focused on the expression technique and work manufacturing of nail design. Any woman that wants to be pretty is interested in nail design which is considered as a means to express beauty, intelligence and sensuality. These days, nail design carries heavy weight in completion of total fashion coordination. Good dress, elegant hair style, bright make-up and well-trimmed nails are requirements of modem women. These days, the range of nail design is more expanding and its importance is getting bigger. To maintain and establish such developmental flow properly, we have to break our stereotyped view on nails and accept it in open view. And we have to actively participate in development of new products and technologies and perform academic research on nail design. For the purpose, we have to consider further studies which contribute to understanding exact meaning of nails and necessity and importance of nails.

  • In this paper, a novel system is proposed to measure skin hydration using the susceptance method. This system largely consists of a low-voltage(${\pm}2.6$ V) driven circuit and minimized electrodes of size($5{\times}5mm^2$). To evaluate the accuracy of the novel system in measuring skin hydration, skin hydration values from 105 subjects are measured by the proposed system. The measurements are then compared to those obtained by the golden reference device based on the capacitance method in terms of Intraclass Correlation Coefficient(ICC) and correlation coefficient. All measurements are performed on 7 sites, which are forehead, Crow's foot, cheek, chin, volar forearm, dorsal forearm, and back of the hand, in a room where the temperature and humidity are maintained at an uniform level of $22{\pm}2^{\circ}C$ and $50{\pm}5%$, respectively. ICC values are above 0.9(p=0.001), signifying that the skin hydration values measured by the two methods show a good level of reliability. Correlation coefficient between the two methods is also 0.562(p=0.001). Based on these results, it is expected that the proposed system may be applicable in a variety of clinical or cosmetic areas.

  • Background: This study was conducted with the purpose of evaluating the effect of skin cancer training provided to maritime high school students on their knowledge and behaviour. Materials and Methods: The study had a quasi-experimental design with pre-test and post-test intervention and control groups. Two maritime high schools located in the city of Antalya were included within the scope of the study between March and June 2013, covering a total of 567 students. Results: While the knowledge mean scores of students regarding skin cancer and sun protection did not vary in the pre-test ($6.2{\pm}1.9$) and post-test ($6.8{\pm}1.9$) control group, the knowledge mean scores of students in the experimental group increased from $6.0{\pm}2.3$ to $10.6{\pm}1.2$ after the provided training. Some 25.4% of students in the experimental group had low knowledge level and 62.2% had medium knowledge level in the pre-test; whereas no students had low knowledge level and 94.3% had high knowledge level in the post-test. It was determined that tenth grade students, those who had previous knowledge on the subject, who considered themselves to be protecting from the sun better, had higher knowledge levels and their knowledge levels increased as the risk level increased. It was found that the provided training was effective and increased positively the knowledge, attitude and behaviour levels of students in the experimental group in terms of skin cancer and sun protection. Conclusions: Along with the provided training which started to form a lifestyle, appropriate attitudes and behaviours concerning skin cancer and sun protection could be brought to students who will work in outdoor spaces and are members of the maritime profession within the risk group.

  • The adhesion of Campylobacter jejuni to chicken skin, along with the associated morphological changes under aerobic conditions at 4, 25, and $37^{\circ}C$ and microaerobic ($O_2\;5%,\;CO_2\;10%,\;N_2\;85%$) conditions, were investigated using confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM), flow cytometry, and plate counting. The morphological change of C. jejuni from a spiral shape to a coccoid form or VBNC form (viable but nonculturable form) progressed rapidly under aerobic conditions at 25, 37, and $4^{\circ}C$. As regards adhesion, the C. jejuni cells were mostly located in the crevices and feather follicles of the chicken skin, where the cells in the feather follicles floated freely in the entrapped water, even after the skin was rinsed quite thoroughly. CLSM also revealed the penetration of some spiral-shaped C. jejuni cells into the chicken skin. Even after changing their shape at various temperatures, coccoid-form C. jejuni cells were still found in the crevices and feather follicles of the chicken skin.

  • Purpose : To investigate the effects of the lavender, lemon and eucalyptus oil mixture on the atopy dermatitis skin lesions induced on NC/Nga Mice by dinitrochlorobenzene (DNCB). Material and Method : For this purpose, we fabricated the oil mixture blending three essential oils (lavender, lemon, eucalyptus : ELL) with one carrier oil (jojoba) and apply it on the atopic dermatitis skin lesions of NC/Nga Mice. Atopic dermatitis in NC/Nga Mice was induced by DNCB treatment on the dorsal skin of mice for 8 weeks. The mixture of ratio of each essential oil drop was 1 (eucalyptus) : 2 (lemon) : 2 (lavender) and this mixture was blended with jojoba oil 50ml (0.025%). The ELL-ointment was supplied for 8 weeks. We evaluated the effects of ELL on cell viability of mouse lung fibroblast, clinical skin features and severity, the level of serum Immunoglobulin (Ig) E & Ig G1, Interleukin (IL)-4, IL-13 and Interferon (IFN)-$\gamma$. Results : ELL showed safety on the cell viability of mouse lung fibroblast compared with control group. The cell viability was measured by SRB method. The effects of ELL on clinical skin features and severity in DNCB-induced dermatitis model of NC/Nga mice was significant compared with control group. EEL also showed significant effects on clinical symptom score compared with control group. Serum IgE & IgG1 level and development of atopy dermatitis skin lesions were evaluated. Serum IgE & IgG1 production was significantly down-regulated in EEL group compared with control group. ELL also down-regulated the levels of IL-4 and IL-13, and up-regulated the level of IFN-$\gamma$ compared with control group significantly. Conclusion : ELL was effective on atopy dermatitis by modulating Th2 related factors.
